drank Special Dark by Mandala Tea
1789 tasting notes

I haven’t had this cup in a few months but was reminded of it now, and after the first sip I had to zip over here to make sure that it was rated high. 98 is pretty exact.

This cup is so rich and dark and amazing. Thankfully I’ve got enough to last me for a few months if i’m careful!

Thank you Curious Tea for giving me a sample for review!

I have to say that I am amazed with the presentation of this box. It’s beautifully wrapped, and the labels on the packaging are elegant and informative. Everything I need to know is right there.

I was very excited to brew this cup because I haven’t had darjeeling in a while, and this was supposed to be top quality. It’s light and fruity, with a little bit of a sharp tang that isn’t quite astringent. It’s fruity and I’m definitely getting peach notes. It’s refreshing. Even as it cools it doesn’t cross that line over into bitterness which is great; I’ve had a few darjeelings that went bad that way\.

Thank you for the sample!

drank Hong Yun Black by Butiki Teas

I have mixed feels about this sipdown.
The up-side- I’ll no longer think “Hong Yun? More like Hong YUM” every time I drink it.
The down-side? I can’t reorder more.

So why only an 81?

Cavocorax 10 years ago

Because it’s not always mind-blowing?

looseTman 10 years ago

OK, got it. Thanks!

Cavocorax 10 years ago

:P The name gets stuck in my head, but sometimes it’s a 90 and sometimes it’s a 75. It’s hard to rate? IDK. :|

Oooh. This is FANCY. Thanks Sil for the sample!
And this sipdown puts me at 150! Woooo!

It’s really rich and lightly smoky. I should have had this a few months ago when it was bitterly cold as this tea would be greatly comforting on a freezing night. It’s a little sweet, but I think I’m getting mushroom-y notes in it as well.

Fancy. This tea is fancy.

drank Ceylon Star by DAVIDsTEA
1789 tasting notes

I bought 800g or whatever it was that DAVIDsTEA sells their bulk tea in. And I ask myself, ’Self, why did you do this?"

The answer is poor impulse control. The good news is that when I crave this tea I still really enjoy it’s coconut/anise creaminess, and it doesn’t seem to have lost any of it’s flavour in all this time either.

Self, have no regrets about this!

because you needed another pound of tea to go with your pound of read my lips?

Cavocorax 10 years ago

Heee! I may have regret that one. (Spoilers: I did)

Nxtdoor 10 years ago

Our weakness currently is boozy red velvet cake with sugar and dairy free creamer. Read my lips is awesome too, don’t be shamed, Cavo!

I’m trying to do too much and that means it’s Friday and I’m exhausted. I can’t perk up. I need something to slap me in the face and get me going, and lbr, Sherlock is down for that. He can be such an ass. But he’s rarely subtle.

So, you know what’s crazy? I don’t write. I haven’t written since High School, and yet, SOMEHOW, I was talked into doing Camp Nanowrimo this year and that means that in April I’ve committed to writing 10,000 words. Of story. WHAT AM I DOING?

I originally signed up for a small prompt where I promised to write 500 words where two characters meet in a bar and I go from there, but now that I’m doing Camp Nano, I’m going to see if I can expand that a bit. And then maybe write bits and pieces here and there. I am definitely not going to write one cohesive work at 10k because I’ve had… let’s see… 2 days to think about this and we start writing on Wednesday, but I’ll play with a few different tropes and see how it goes!

I chose John Watson as my main character, and the second character will be RANDOMLY ASSIGNED from Supernatural, Hannibal (tv), or Saga (comics). So I can’t really even plan that part out until I get that assignment, but basically the point is to just get me writing a little each day and get better and stay confident and see where it goes! Part of being in Camp Nano is cheerleading others on so they finish and I am GOOD AT THAT SHIT, YO.

It’ll be fun. Also, I’m using Scrivener to help organize my thoughts etc, and I can totally see how this software would be amazing if I were writing a proper story because it’d keep everything straight for me, and so if I spend all month using the trial and getting good, AND I reach my 10k limit, I can buy it for $20 instead of $40. I’m a total dork for fancy software.

Hey – I think it’s working! This tea is waking me up! WOO!

I’m crazy, right?
Doing this, then doing gishwhes in August. Looks, I don’t have free time, let’s just pile all these challenges on!!!! :P (But I ordered a green wig and a flower crown for the scavenger hunt!)

Sil 10 years ago

a what now? lol what did i agree to get myself in to?

Cavocorax 10 years ago

Hahaha. Well, those are optional! I figured that I’ll probably get some challenges for gishwhes where I’ll have to go outside and interact with people – maybe at the subway – or WHO KNOWS. So, if I’m going to be doing that, why not dress up a bit? I get shy and have trouble initiating conversations with ppl, but if I have bright green hair, they can notice me? :P

And so…. are you thinking about it? :D I’m in, but I haven’t started/joined a team at all yet. Just poking at people to see who might bite.

Sil 10 years ago

only thing i’m waiting for is to make sure work doensn’t have weird things scheduled going on at that time

Cavocorax 10 years ago

Sweet! :D #fingerscrossed

aw I wish I had the guts to do Nano! Have fun with it :)

Cavocorax 10 years ago

Camp Nano seem more relaxed than full Nano! It’s not too late to sign up! :P

I like that we’re put into cabins and can cheer each other on! Also, being able to commit to 10k instead of 50k is such a RELIEF. (And literally the only reason I said, sure… why not. 10k is 333 words/daily and that doesn’t sound nearly as frightening…)

But thanks! We’ll see if it works out!

Indigobloom 10 years ago

hmmm. It does sound tempting. Maybe if I can come up with a good story idea

Woah. So thank you Kittenna for sharing this one. I really, really, like it.

It’s actually making me crazy because I SWEAR I’ve had a tea that had a similar profile but I cannot figure out what it is, and I cannot nail down exactly what this tastes like (sorry) but I do know that I really really like this.

I went with a 3 min steep because I didn’t want to go crazy with it, and the resulting tea is very smooth, and slightly sweet due to the licorice. I feel relaxed drinking it, but not so much that I’m going to nod off. I’m just alert, and relaxed. Not a bad way to start the day!

Oh, and I cheated and looked at other reviews! AwkwardSoul mentioned that it made her think of guayusa and dingdingding that’s the flavour I was trying to find. That’s pretty much exactly what this tastes of – woodsy, honeyed, and smooth.

Thanks for the sample!

It did NOT take long for me to drink up 50g of this at the office! Happily, I still have about 20g at home. I didn’t expect to enjoy the rose as much as I do, but it’s a nicely balanced blend, and for a DAVIDsTEA, it isn’t cloyingly sweet.

Profile

Bio

Tea: I just started drinking loose tea in the fall of 2012, and once I started I had to get more and more and try ALL THE TEAS. Joining Steepster made this worse/easier.

So far it seems that I prefer unflavoured black teas, although I still drink a few that are flavoured each day too. Oolongs, greens, puerhs and white teas are all very good, but I just don’t crave them as often.

Yet.

Me: Ok. Random things. I like animals, I have a little girl and a devoted bf, two cats, and … I’m a geek. I like Lord of the Rings, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones, Supernatural, fandom!, pen&paper RPG’s, online RPG’s, video games, silly internet memes, puzzles and a bunch of others things! I taught myself to knit and I’m considering crochet but I need to make time for all these things!

I keep trying to learn languages on Duolingo and failing. I’m currently failing Esperanto. :P
