775 Tasting Notes

This is the last bit of my sample from VariaTEA, sadly!

Just as good as the first time — this tea is smooth with a healthy dose of vanilla that just tastes plain good. Theres some coconut in there too and it all just melds together nicely.

Thanks for sharing such a great tea!

A sample sent to me from VariaTEA :)

I am not generally a fan of earl grey teas. I’ve tried a number over the years and they never sit well with me. However, that doesn’t stop me from trying them every so often!

This one is not overly offensive with the bergamot, but still not my fav. I could maaaaybe get on board with a creamy earl grey. I was hoping for a creaminess I realized after my first sip.

It’s been snowing non-stop for days here, so creaminess seems perfect for the season. Back to the cupboard to find just that!

Thanks for sharing VariaTEA!

I hoped this would be creamier/more vanilla than it was too

Courtney

Ah, well. We can’t win them all. I still appreciate being able to try it out!

drank L'Automne by Fauchon

This is the only rooibos tea I’ve ever found that I truly enjoy.

This one is getting quite old, and I’m pretty sure Fauchon doesn’t even have this tea anymore (which is terribly sad considering I’d order it regardless of what the shipping may be).

This one has that rooibos base, but it’s not medicinal at all. There’s a lovely subtle hint of orange that mixes well with the base and hints of milk chocolate and cream as well.

Unfortunately I don’t think Fauchon even ships outside of Europe anyway. I remember there was some website we used to stalk for Fauchon teas, as they had them every once in a while.

Courtney

It’s such a shame. I actually had a friend pick this one up years ago when she went to Paris. :(

It’s just before noon here now and I have a class Zoom for ecology in an hour. I am so excited, but also my anxiety is taking over haha!

I made this one to enjoy beforehand, then I’ve got everything prepped to make my favourite and most anxiety-reducing tea: Yuchi Wild Mountain for the actual call. Woot!

My homemade creamer was gone, alas, I had to use the simple syrup and regular old almond milk in this today. Nonetheless, still tasty!

There are a lot of flavours that others have tasted in this tea!

This is another I always keep in my cupboard and re-order once I’m out and have for years. I’m nearly out of this again, so I may replace it soon (I’ve been waffling on what else to put in the cart — just enough to hit the shipping threshold — suggestion are welcome!).

This one is a great straight black tea. It’s a little malty and a little bready or grainy and a lot of goodness. I prefer this one fairly hot. Depending on the day, as it cools, I either like it more or don’t like it at all haha.

Also, I made vanilla cupcakes with lemon icing last night (vegan) and that’s what’s accompanying this tea for breakfast!

I love their Fengqing Dragon Pearl black tea. Every time I order from Teavivre, I end up with piles of samples! :P

Leafhopper

I like their Yung Nan Dian Hong Golden Tip. It’s somewhat expensive, but excellent. Also, those vanilla lemon cupcakes sound good!

Courtney

Thanks for the suggestions! I’ll check those both out. :)

Another great sample from VariaTEA!

I am really enjoying this one! It’s a simple, straight black tea.

Every time I open a new black tea I fear ‘the smoke’. I taste smokiness where others don’t ever seem to (Laoshan Black has been forever ruined because of this). Many Teavivre teas I’ve ordered have no mention of smoke, but then there it is for me. And I can’t handle even the subtlest hint of smoke. All of this to say, when I have an opportunity to try a new black tea and it’s smoke-free, I am so happy!

This one does remind me of something I can’t quite put my finger on, but I’m really enjoying it as my evening tea. It’s a bit malty and I’m here for it!

Edit: I did a second steep of this for 30 seconds longer and it was just as delicious the second time around.

You’re the first to call this “great” so I’m glad you enjoyed it. The other reviews have all been pretty indifferent.

Courtney

I noticed that too. I’m glad I got to enjoy it at least. Thanks for sending it my way!

I just skimmed the reviews of this one and was surprised to see they’re fairly mediocre. This is one I really enjoy from DF.

I find the scent translates to the flavour nicely and I enjoy their subtle flavours so much. Even Lex leaned over to smell my cup and asked for a sip haha! There’s a smooth vanilla flavour with a hint of orange in the background. This is a lovely tea to finish off my studying for the evening.

Lex had back to back Zoom calls all afternoon, so I made this one up just before they all started to attempt to not have the kettle going quite as much.

This one is always super tasty. I forgot about it about halfway through and had the last half quite cold, but nonetheless it was great! The sweetness comes out even more once it cools.

I keep hearing good things about this tea! On the wishlist it goes.

Cameron B.

Good news, I found a sealed sample of this in my straight tea samples box! Huzzah!

Courtney

Yay! I hope you like it! It’s one I order annually (the largest size) and have for the last few years.

Leafhopper

I just ordered this tonight based on your recommendation!

Courtney

Oh my gosh – my recommendation? I hope you like it! :) It really is one of my favs (after Butiki, I had to find another Taiwanese Wild Mountain and this one was the only to come close).

I haven’t been able to figure out how I want my coffee in the morning, which has led me to having no coffee the last couple days. But that’s okay, because I have this awesome blend!

I always make this the same way: hot water, my simple syrup (made with coconut sugar), and my homemade creamer. So tasty!

drank Mint Cocoa by New Moon Tea Co.

I have been drinking this tea for years (since October 2017) and had no idea I didn’t add it to the database!

I discovered this years ago from an Etsy shop that I’ve continued ordering from ever since then. It’s even one of the few I keep at work (well, kept, when we went into the office, pre-COVID). This one is a seasonal blend of theirs, and I make sure to order a ridiculous amount every holiday season to last me through the year.

I steeped this to boost my motivation for the afternoon after not sleeping all that well last night. My energy started to wane around noon, so this tea was a great pick-me-up — black tea with cacao nibs and peppermint. Fresh and delicious!

Cameron B.

I’ll have to try it – I have their Apple Cinnamon (chamomile) and Honeybush Cider and enjoy both them.

Courtney

So excited to hear someone else knows about them! I also live for their Relax & Renew. I still have a couple unopened bags of this one from last year, so I’ll stock up again, but not quite as much this year. :)

Cameron B.

I think they’re the only Etsy tea seller I’ve been happy with. Definitely remind me when you see this tea available so I don’t forget! XD

It looks like they have a website with more teas than the Etsy shop, too:
https://newmoonteaco.ca/

Courtney

Yes! I actually ordered off their website the last time I ordered from them (just as we went off work from COVID). The same great service as Etsy and I think cheaper shipping (or perhaps free shipping over a certain amount).

I’ll let you know! I feel like they usually come up pretty soon for the holidays. :)

Cameron B.

I just checked on a whim and the winter seasonal teas are on the website now! https://newmoonteaco.ca/collections/seasonal

Courtney

Woot! I’ll check them out!

Cameron B.

I would ask if there’s anything you want to split, but I guess since we’re in different countries that wouldn’t be cost-effective anyway. :P

Courtney

Haha! Thank you for the thought, but yes it wouldn’t be all that cost-effective. :)

Bio

A few of my favourite things: animals, the ocean, science (I’m currently doing my MSc in biology), travel, all things summer, and of course – tea!

I love chatting biology, so feel free to ask me about what I study or follow my instagram @biologistcourtney!

I love black teas and this is what I’m usually drinking. I pretty well always drink my tea without anything added.

I’m also fond of herbals, oolongs, and subtly flavoured greens. Whites are also enjoyable, and I’m always looking for a replacement for my all-time favourite Butiki’s White Rhino.

Pu’erhs, rooibos (specifically red, I’m more open to green), honeybush, and matés are not my favourite. I tend to avoid them altogether unless others find them so amazing they shouldn’t be missed.

Likes:
Creaminess, toffee, cacao (true dark chocolate flavour), coconut (true coconut flavour), and rhubarb. I’m open to flavoured teas but they can’t be cloying or fake/candy like.

Dislikes:
Any smokiness at all, bergamot, flowers (rose and jasmine), hibiscus is hit and miss.
