drank JavaVana Mate by Teavana

I made this cup at 10:30 in the morning and lucky for me, I made it in the timolino because it is still quite warm at 8:00 pm. I planned on having this in the early morning to wake me up given my night of no sleep and yet it took me until now to drink down the other cup of mate, Polo Blend, I made at the same time. Just one of those days I guess.

Well, now at 8 pm, I am drinking a 16 oz timolino full of mate. Perhaps not the best plan but I imagine by the time I choose to go to bed tonight I will be so tired the caffeine just won’t have a chance to affect me. If it does, at least I got to enjoy a tasty cup of tea.

I can not stress enough how shockingly good this was to me. Not because I thought it would be bad but rather because it is advertised towards coffee drinkers and I do not drink coffee. Yet I still find this super enjoyable. When I describe it to my friends, I call it the coffee tea that tastes like chocolate. The non-tea drinkers out there get very confused by that comment and usually can’t figure out if I am talking about a coffee or a tea so they just change the conversation. However, that is what this is. The tea smells like coffee but tastes more like a mocha. There is some hints of coffee right at the end and into the aftertaste but it definitely works in this cup with all the other flavors. Thank you MissB once again for this tasty treat. This might just become my go-to mate.

Oh Cavocorax your mixing with milk method has done it again. Though the flavor is not strong, I am definitely detecting a smooth and creamy nuttiness that is distinctly peanut butter right at the end of my sip. It makes for a delightful finish and a pleasant aftertaste. Thank you Cavocorax for both your matcha wisdom and your matcha sample.

Roswell Strange

Ooh, this sounds like a really interesting flavour!

So today is a morning for mate. Why? Caffeine.

After spending the night writing a paper, I am not getting prepared to take a break from paper writing to go write a quiz. Then I get to return, finish the paper, and work on study notes due tonight. Luckily, all this work also means today is the last day of class and I am a mere 3 exams, one quiz, and one paper away from finishing the semester and hoping on a plane to Florida. Yay!

Anyways, about the tea. JustJames sent this to me and as I have said before, it is delicious! Today I am get strong notes of creamy vanilla combined with mate. Different than I remember it but still very good. Thank you JustJames for sharing this with me!!

drank Lemon Chiffon by Della Terra Teas

Thank you QueenOfTarts for sharing this with me! I am very excited because this tastes very similar to Lime Chiffon and that tea is delicious. Although I think I prefer Lime just smidge more because I find it slightly creamier, this is a very, VERY close second. Now to enjoy this while I work on my paper!

For a very brief moment I taste sweet lychee unfortunately that is immediately replaced by a bitter flavor from the white tea making for a not too pleasant cup. Thank you JennyFur for sharing but this is a miss for me

I understand that. I love the scent so much but the flavor is ‘meh’ to me too. I wish I could bottle that scent though. My goodness.

drank Chocolate Truffle by Tea Desire

This is yet another sample from the extremely generous MissB. And it is definitely an interesting cup. More than anything I am tasting the Pu’erh. It is earthy for sure but also there is a hint of dark chocolate that creeps in around mid-sip and lingers in the aftertaste. I am not sure why but I expected more of a milk chocolate flavor. Nonetheless, this does bring to mind chocolate truffles, just ones made with dark chocolate. Thank you MissB for this tasting experience.

After the success I had with the Belgium Chocolate matcha this morning, I decided to try some of this in cold milk as well. Though I personally prefer it as a hot latte, it was still creamy and delicious with a hint of raspberry to round it out. Now I am debating about placing an order with Red Leaf Tea since Cookies and Cream (which I really enjoyed) and Bavarian Cream (the one matcha I REALLY want to taste) are both on sale. Alas, I am getting close to maxing out my credit card and so I am wondering if I should take that as a sign that no more tea should be purchased. I have about 8.5 hours to decide. Anyways, thank you Sil for sending me a sample of this to taste.

MissB

I have both, if you want me to send you some? I thought I sent you some Bavarian Cream. Mind you, I did get a small package of it, which really is very small.

VariaTEA

haha thank you for your offer but you have already sent me so much. I have never tried the Bavarian Cream but it does sound delicious and people seem to review it positively. It is on sale so perhaps I will order it and since I have an address in the US I can send it to, shipping is just under $3. I have bought so much tea this weekend already though and I am wondering if it is just overkill at this point haha.

MissB

Lol. We’re all addicted. I’m going to refrain telling you just how much tea I bought this weekend…. ;) If you’re enjoying it though, get it! It’s delicious.

Sil

so glad you enjoyed it

drank Jasmine Bloom by Adagio Teas

MissB sent me a couple of blooms and now that I have my large glass teapot, I was very excited to finally make one. Also, I finally got to use my new thermometer (thank you MissB!!!). I have a few other bloom teas but I think this one is the nicest to look at for sure. All in all, this is a nice enough cup of tea. Not something I would reach for flavor-wise as it is just a little too floral for my taste but I can definitely see this being a crowd pleaser for when guests come over. Everyone loves a bloom tea and this is a nice mild taste that is sure to be enjoyed by all. Thank you MissB for your kindness and generosity.

I’m so glad you got a chance to enjoy them! A bit too floral for me as well, yet so meditative to watch as it unfurls.

VariaTEA

Have you tried any of the blooms from DAVIDs? They are made with black tea and though they are not the greatest tea I have tasted, they are quite nice. I personally like the strawberry bloom. Also the Peach Momotaro from Teavana is good.

drank Gold Rush by DAVIDsTEA

Okay so I am not sure what exactly I was expecting when I asked Roswell Strange for a sample of this tea. The name had always caught my eye when I browsed DAVIDs site or when I would look at their catalog but I would always forget about it when I was in the store. I never really looked at the ingredients or read the description, I just always thought it sounded like it would be a good tea. So when I took my first sip and tasted Butterscotch, I was pretty shocked. This tea is buttery and sweet and very tasty. It is a bit strong but that is actually a result of my overleafing due to overestimating the amount of boiling water in the kettle. Luckily Roswell Strange was generous to send me enough for one more cup so I can get it right. However, despite my mistake with the water, it is still a very delicious start to the morning. Thank you Roswell Strange for sharing with me!!

This is my favourite white blend from DT, so far. I find it tastes like liquid Werther’s Caramel. It’s also my Dad’s favourite blend that he’s tried from my stash – so I usually hide the tin when he comes to visit (it’s pretty expensive to keep stocked since it’s so heavy – so I’m stingy with it). Tre also really likes it, but he’s forbidden from drinking it. To me, it tastes like liquid Werther’s caramels. I also find, with a supe

VariaTEA

haha luckily no one wants to go through my tea stash to find teas so I never need to hide anything but I can imagine it being expensive given those mulberries are pretty giant as are the chunks of coconut. Thank you so much for sharing with me. I will probably get more in the future now that I know I enjoy it! by the way, does it resteep well?

Roswell Strange

**I also find, with a super long steep time, I can get a good second steep out of it. Three steeps is pushing it though.

Roswell Strange

Yeah, it’s $11.50/50g – and with those giant (and heavy) mulberries and coconut slivers it can be a little much. But taste wise, totally worth it! Tre hardly ever goes through my tea, and when I still had it RVC was his go to tea (I hated it, so he had my blessing to drink as much as he wanted) – I swapped the 50g I had left all away, though. He loves coconut so, whenever he does want to drink something and he doesn’t just let me pick it for him, those are the blends he homes in on. My Dad just gets super excited by all the tea blends though and he always want to try a cup or two of something new whenever he’s over.

Roswell Strange

Actually – he recently made his first DAVIDsTEA purchase himself: 100g of Long Life Oolong. He texted me in the middle of work to share his excitement with me, not realizing I also have a 100g tin of it. When I go down for the holidays I’ll ave to teach him how to properly brew it – I think right now he’s using random measurements for each cup and not realizing he can resteep the leaves. I actually don’t even know what he’s making it in – he doesn’t own a small strainer (I mean, he has one for pasta…) or a teaball or anything like that.

OMGsrsly

Sometimes you can find Gold Rush in the 2/$5 bags. Keep your eyes open when you go in store. I scored 4 bags of it over the summer!

I found the chocolate!! Thanks to Cavocorax’s wonderful suggestion of making this in cold milk, I was able to start my morning with a delicious chocolate-y snack. Though it was not quite chocolate milk level of chocolate flavor, there was enough flavor to still be noticeable and delightful. Thank you Cavocorax for both sending me the sample and for the cold milk suggestion (I feel like I am the only one who did not know this was a good way to have matcha haha).Something tells me I will be going through the matcha faster now that I don’t need to wait for boiling water to cool in order to make it.

MissB

Smoothies are my favorite way to make matcha. So glad you’re enjoying these now! (Also, the level of flavoring does make a difference – delicate, distinctive, robust, etc.)

VariaTEA

I actually don’t know what level any of these are. I should probably ask Cavo because she sent me the samples. However, I do have a couple of samples from Sil that are distinctive and I find that tends to be enough for a fair bit of the teas.

JennyFur

I actually do mine in warmed almond milk. Going to have to try it cold now.

VariaTEA

haha it has changed my matcha world. I mean it seems so obvious once someone says it. And the best part is no having to wait for water to boil or cool. Just dump the matcha, pour the milk, stir, and drink. It has really helped a lot of flavors that I did not taste as a latte shine.

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
