After reading Lariel’s tasting note, I could not get the thought of this minty tea out of my mind. Luckily I had a generous sample from Aimee Popovacki that I could enjoy. This tea is wonderful because of its simplicity. It is minty, sweet, and delicious. A nice cup for a cold evening :) Thanks Aimee!

I overestimated how fast I could drink a cup of tea so I ended up with a cup of this roasty-toasty deliciousness in one hand and some smooth and creamy pineapple matcha in the other. Both very good for very different reasons. The toasted rice flavoring really shines in this tea but then the marshmallow-y sweetness creeps up on you right at the end of the sip and leaves a deliciously creamy and sweet aftertaste. A delicious blend indeed!

ETA: Resteeped and the flavor is still going strong :)

drank Pineapple Matcha by Matcha Outlet
5272 tasting notes

I woke up this morning in the mood for some delicious green tea and that’s when my package from Sil caught my eye. I realized there was still some matcha I hadn’t tried. Since I didn’t have any milk, I went the fruity root and chose the Pineapple Matcha – distinctive flavoring. I was amazed because it actually smelled just like pineapple! Steeped this made for a very smooth, slightly creamy cup. I noticed matcha more in this than I noticed in the other flavored matchas I tried but I thought it blended beautifully with the pineapple flavoring. All in all, this was a delicious cup so thank you Sil for this delicious treat!

Hahah. I love how you have so many samples and packages from people. I wonder what you’re cupboard will end up at once they all arrive!

VariaTEA

People have been so amazing and have shared so much with me. In the past month I think my cupboard increased by about 100 teas – some from my shopping (considering I bought about 25 teas in one day that shouldn’t be a surprise) and others from swaps and packages sent to me. It has definitely been eye opening and I realized there is just so much to try.

drank Cinnamon Roll Honeybush by 52teas

I think I like 52 teas cinnamon teas because this is another hit for me! It has the same delicious cinnamon flavor that their Strawberry Pie Honeybush had which is amazing because that tea is amazing! This tea actually is reminiscent of a cinnamon roll – ooey gooey and delicious with just the right amount of cream cheese frosting. YUM!!

So the dry leaf of this smelled amazing! I could smell the coconut and even picked up the smell of cream cheese frosting. However, something got lost in translation because the brewed cup lacks the flavors that my nose enjoyed prior to steeping. I do get the coconut but the cream cheese flavor I was so anxious to taste seems to have disappeared. I will have to try steeping this below boiling too.

I only do Frank’s blends at 200, which I guess is hard if you’re still looking for a thermometer. Makes a tremendous difference.

VariaTEA

haha I really should invest in one. It is on my holiday wishlist so hopefully someone comes through for me. I will definitely try this at below boiling. It’s weird because some tasted great when done with boiling water and others not so much.

Sil

franks honeybush teas i usually steep for um…a long time. heh like 5-20 mins hahaha

VariaTEA

I will try that next time :) Thanks Sil!

Having this one tonight as a Blueberry Kona Popsicle! It is such a great iced tea that my roommate and I thought it would make the perfect iced treat. A little bit of sweetner and this is like juice on a stick – YUM!

Sipdown (of sorts?)! Dexter3657 sent me some of this to try and I was not a fan. Not wanting another cup but having enough tea to make at least one more, I got creative. The rest of this tea was infused into butter to make an amazing gluten-free Chai Banana Loaf. The flavors that I found too strong in the cup (i.e. cardamom) really shined in the loaf mixed with the banana and bready goodness. I hope you don’t feel I wasted the sample, because it really did add another dimension to an already great loaf recipe. Thank you so much Dexter3657 for the ingredients to make such a delicious treat.

ifjuly

that sounds awesome! i love using teas i wasn’t crazy about as rubs, baking ingredients, or to steep liquor. yay!

Dexter

Sorry you didn’t like it, but happy that you found a use for it. I quite often too find ways, to make the “not for me” ones more palatable.

This is a bit of a miss for me. It is not a bad cup of tea but rather that is all it is – a cup of tea. I am not getting any chocolate flavor and the mint is so subtle that if you are not looking for it, you would not know that it is there. This is a pleasant enough cup of black tea but Mint Chocolate Mousse Cake it is not. I won’t have a problem getting through the free samples of this that I have but I definitely am glad I did not pay for this one.

ETA: Cold the mint is more prominent but still no chocolate.

drank Strawberry Zabaglione by 52teas

I had high hopes for this tea after falling in love with the strawberry flavors of Strawberry Pie Honeybush last night. Unfortunately, this pales in comparison. I find it has a similar thick mouth feel to pancake breakfast – I think it added to the pancake breakfast tea because it resembled the mouth feel of a pancake but I am not sure if it really goes well in this tea. I also find the strawberry flavor is more prominent in the smell than the taste although it is subtly there. Perhaps brewing this slightly under boiling will help the flavors shine through a bit more. As I had it today, I think this is a nice enough cup of tea but I would far rather spend my money getting more of the amazing Strawberry Pie Honeybush.

uh oh! i just grabbed some for the same reasons while restocking the pie one. hmmm…

Sil

Try 2.5 mins at less than boiling – seems to work better for Frank’s black bases in my experience

VariaTEA

ifjuly – don’t worry, this tea is not bad at all. I just far prefer the other. Both are good though.
Sil – thank you! I will definitely try that out next time

moraiwe

I struggled with this one for a while too. 190-195 for 2.5 min seems to be the sweet spot.

CHAroma

I second Sil’s recommendation. That brewing method revolutionized Frank’s black base for me.

MissB

Another one here chiming in – definitely less than boiling for 2.5 minutes.

Dexter

(Making mental note – 2.5 minutes for 52teas black bases….)

VariaTEA

Thanks everyone! I will definitely be sure to have a 2.5 min steeping time with water just below boiling.

drank Bella Berry by Tealish

Courtney was kind enough to share this with me so thank you Courtney! Unfortunately, this just does not do it for me. My roommate took a sip first and mentioned it tastes like potpourri and once that was put into my head it could not be undone. I didn’t taste berry but rather found this to be more on the floral side (and I am not even sure if there is florals in it??). It was pleasant enough to try but I don’t think I will be buying any of this in the future.

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
