So I brewed a lot of water when I made my cup of Nina’s Japon and the leaves from my cup last night were still on the counter. As a result, I decided to make another cup of this. Honestly, it is just as tasty as the first steep. I am drinking it cold and it is actually a great caffeine-free and calorie-free substitute for the real thing. Sure it is not carbonated but I don’t think I can express enough how impressively accurate the flavor is. A tasty cup indeed.

Okay, after that tasting note I’m pretty sure I need this tea in my life.

VariaTEA

I definitely recommend it. Perhaps I can include some if we ever do a swap :)

So I have a serious problem. I have over 200 types of tea and a box of samples that I haven’t even begun to try. In addition to that, I have multiple orders and swaps on the way to me right now. Meanwhile, because I sold a textbook and had some cash in my pocket, I had to fight the urge all day to go over to DAVIDs and pick up a few new teas. What stopped me? (1) The realization that I have lots of tea and I need to drink it before it goes bad and thus I shouldn’t buy more and (2) if I forwent the trip to DAVIDs, I could get home sooner to have a cup of this delicious tea that I have been craving ever so much since I got it weeks ago. In the end, my better judgement steered me home to a nice cup of Nina’s Japon.

I am so happy that this tea is actually as delicious as I remembered and not just hyped up in my own mind from the weeks of wanting it but not being able to have any. The green and black tea combine together beautifully to provide the perfectly smooth and subtle base that really allows the flavors to shine. The smell is that of sweet, gooey caramel but the first taste that hits my tongue is the vanilla. That sweetens up to the tasty caramel goodness only to be rounded out by the awesome flavor of the toasted rice. This tea is seriously ADDICTIVE! I am already 1/2 way done my 16 oz mug and all I have done was write this tasting note.

I am so glad I actually got to have a cup of this when I went to the Nina’s Paris office. That allowed me to get a whole tin worth rather than a mere one cup sample. And its a good thing that the tin is the large because this tea is going to go fast!

ETA: Having a resteep and the caramel flavor is more muted but still delicious. I think I have fallen in love with Nina’s take on caramel. Between this and Je t’aime, I am thoroughly impressed.

YEah, this is a tasty tasty little tea :D

keychange

This tea sounds delicious. Also, I am similarly hopelessly lost in my tea addiction. Good for you for actually getting home! I have a dt trip planned for, um, this evening as well. But..maybe I won’t go. But maybe I will. ugh.

VariaTEA

@Stephanie – I am glad you enjoy it too. It is definitely a tasty cup :)

@keychange – we should do a trade of favourites :P. I will send you a sample of this in exchange for a taste of Queen Catherine that you are so fond of. Also, in regards to your trip, at least your cupboard (your online one at least) seems fairly manageable so you can afford to expand it just a little.

Cavocorax

Yay – you make me want to buy some of this. I’m adding to my shopping list. :D

Cavocorax

Have you had H&S’s Tokyo tea, and if so, how does Nina’s compare?

VariaTEA

I haven’t tried to Tokyo but I would definitely like to know how the two compare as well. Also, I can send you a sample if you like, Cavo. However, I know the people at Nina’s send free samples out so it might be worth emailing them.

Cavocorax

I think I’d be more likely to just place an order with Nina’s Paris rather than order some of H&S’s Tokyo. :P (There’s more at Nina’s I currently want than I do H&S teas)

VariaTEA

Haha I would have to agree on that point. There are definitely teas I want to grab more of from Nina’s Paris. I am hoping I get to go see them again when I am back in Florida in March. I can be our tea mule and literally carry the tea back over the border with me. Then I will be home in April so I could just drop it off at your house :P

Every so often I like to give my gravity steeper a very good clean. That means taking it apart and soaking it overnight with baking soda and hot water. That leaves me with a tea ball that is very cute (it is a flower hanging on a tree branch – http://www.amazon.com/Arta-Chefn-Tree-Infuser-Saucer/dp/B003V8A6FW%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAIAA4MWUJXHBYFRNQ%26tag%3DSquid725716-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB003V8A6FW)but has large holes, meaning lots of sediment in the cup when I use it with rooibos. However, given the late hour I wanted to stick to caffeine free teas so I decided honeybush was probably my best bet. This one stuck out in my mind after reading MissB’s tasting note.

It is definitely a really tasty blend. The root beer flavor is so exact. Personally, I find the flavors come out more when you let this cool a bit but sometimes I am so impatient because the tea is that good.

After reading MissB and your notes about this, it is definitely going on the must try list!

I couldn’t get to my steeper because my friends were in the kitchen so instead I made a cup of this. Honestly, it always smells amazing and luckily today that came through in the taste. It is a cup of tasty vanilla buttercream frosting when you add a dash of milk. Yum!!

ETA: When this tea is good, it’s REALLY good. Even the resteep is a cup of deliciousness!

So I think I either overleafed or brewed this at too high a temperature because the juicy pomegranate flavor I love so much has fallen to the background and I am mostly tasting the white base. Not a bad flavor but not what I was hoping for when I made the cup :(

I was craving this prior to going to Florida but I stupidly left it behind. Then I returned from Florida and couldn’t taste things. However, today I have finally be able to taste some things so I decided to have a cup.

Just like the last, it is sweet and delicious. A blend with “rose” right in the name scares me because florals can easily taste perfume-y but there is none of that here. This is a cup of liquified candy and I am so glad my roommate picked it out for me. Yum!!

Due to the temperature outside being unseasonably warm, I took over the extra food I got to store in a friend’s deep freezer. Typically this friend comes to me to have tea and study but instead she made me a pot of tea. This was a blend she got from her brother for Christmas and though I worried it would be too rooibosy for my taste, I gave her the benefit of the doubt that it would be a tasty cup. Furthermore, it had a beautiful honey smell that I could not pass up.

Tastewise, this was a delicious cup of liquid honey. Honey Bee is called to mind but it was no where near as cloying because the rooibos toned down the sweetness. A delicious blend that I will definitely be grabbing some more of when I go back to Thornhill.

drank Eight Candles by Della Terra Teas

Once again something crazy happened. I woke up this morning to not one, but two food packages from Jenny Craig. That is ONE MONTH worth of food! I called in and turns out they sent the food twice but only charged me for the one order. I offered to send the second order back to them but they said it would go bad before it got back to them. So now my freezer is jam packed and what I couldn’t get to fit in there is hanging out in my barbecue (I figured I would put the freezing weather to good use!). Although, of course when I want it to be freezing, Montreal weather is above zero but I will eat those meals first and hope for the best.

Anyways, onto the tea! I was packing this one up for a friend the other day and it smelled so amazing. Since I had 2 oz of it, I thought I would experiment with it to see if I could taste a black tea. I am picking up on hints of marshmallow-y caramel! Yay!! However, it is very, VERY subtle. I am not sure if that is a result of my taste issue right now or my use of an excessive amount of water for a non-excessive amount of leaf. Nevertheless, at least I can detect something so I am taking that as a win :)

drank Birthday Cake by DAVIDsTEA

So the craziest thing happened today…someone tried to buy over $1000 of paintball gear and apple online purchases on my credit card!! Luckily I keep my limit low so when I went to the grocery store and got denied for my $45 worth of groceries I thought I would check what I bought that made me hit my limit so soon. Then I saw a purchase for $608 from apple online. $608!!! Someone tried to buy an iphone or an ipad on my dime I am guessing. Of course I called the bank and when they went through the recent purchases I learned that in addition to the apple products, the asshole tried (and thankfully got declined) to buy over $1000 in paintball gear. SERIOUSLY!?!?!? Luckily. my bank has assured me that I don’t need to worry about the fraudulent charges. However, now I need to go through the hassle of getting a new card and trying to recall all the companies with automatic payments set up. I suppose that is a small price to pay for what could have been a far more costly situation had I not caught it early.

Anyways, in celebration of my taking care of this issue before it got out of hand, I decided to have a cup of Birthday Cake tea. I figured, even if I couldn’t taste it, I could at least smell the sweet birthday cake goodness scent that always makes me smile. Also, I have a fair bit of this tea so I didn’t mind brewing a cup to enjoy the smell more than anything. Tastewise, there isn’t much going on but that is probably a combination of this being a relatively weak flavored tea and my recent inability to taste. Nonetheless, I am glad to have dealt with this situation and to now be able to relax with an awesome smelling cup!

I’m glad you caught it! Thats scary.

keychange

Oh my gosh! what an awful story. I’m so relieved on your behalf that the idiot was caught. and good luck sorting out all the aftermath.

Roswell Strange

Oh that’s awful! Thank God you caught it early, and hopefully everything can be swiftly resolved.

Kelci

Glad you caught it. Hope all resolution goes smoothly. Way to go for staying on the upbeat-Cheers to you!

VariaTEA

Thanks everyone. It is an annoyance to have to get a new card but luckily I keep my limit low so they weren’t able to get totally spend happy on my dime. Plus, because it was caught early, I am not responsible for the fraudulent charges. It is more a pain in the butt than anything else especially given it was stolen for such dumb crap.

tigress_al

phew, good thing!

caile

Oh my gosh – that’s terrible, and such trouble to have to change everything. So good you noticed the charges early!

Helena

Definitely worth celebrating the fact that you caught it early!!

Still drinking this, waiting for my ability to taste to return. I actually have been craving teas and can’t have them because I can’t taste them. What I would give for a tasty cup of Nina’s Japon or Marshmallow Snow Flake Earl Grey. Alas it would be a waste to make them right now so instead I am using this time to make dents in many of the teas I wouldn’t usually reach for. Here’s hoping that this tea works and will help me get over this cold faster.

Hopefully it helps you feel better soon!

Thanks. Luckily I feel fine. The lack of taste is the only symptom that remains.

Ah, well that’s good! Though not tasting things would be frustrating for sure!

My cupboard has grown exponentially since joining this site and I have a lot to share. Feel free to snoop through my cupboard and message me if anything interests you – I am always happy to swap!

For me, flavored teas are definitely my sweet spot. I will most often reach for black teas and rooibos or honeybush blends but I do keep some flavored whites and greens around for when the mood strikes. I have a few herbals/tisanes but most of the time I find myself disappointed by them as they often smell deliciously sweet and then end up tasting tart/sour. I have a little bit of an aversion to pu’erh and oolong teas. I am also wary of florals, earl greys, and chai teas. I do not like overpowering citrus flavors nor do I usually like hibiscus, licorice or chamomile. I love dessert teas – caramel, vanilla, toffee, cookie, cream, and other sweet flavors make me smile. Fruits like strawberry, peach, mango, and pineapples will often catch my attention as well.

I have also realized that although I really enjoy adding frothed milk to some of my teas, if I do not like the tea with zero additives (just in plain water without milk or sugar), I probably won’t drink it. The one exception is flavored matchas which I will happily drink in cold milk if I do not like it mixed with hot water. My theory is if the tea can’t stand on its own then it is not for me and I will more than likely try to swap it out for something else.

Tea Ratings Guide (as of December 10, 2017)
90-100 Teas I NEED on hand at all times
80-89 Teas I want to keep around for a cup every now and then
70-79 Teas I am glad I have around and can experiment with but probably don’t need more than what’s in my cupboard
60-69 Teas I would not turn down a cup of from a friend but that would probably be enough
50-59 Teas I can see why someone would enjoy but are not for me
Under 50 Teas I really did not like and most likely got dumped
