Yum! Just got this today in a swap with Starfevre (thanks!!!) I made myself a mini serving just now with 1/4 tsp, around 2oz water and a half tsp of sugar. It’s good! I like white tea a lot. It will be interesting to try in lattes in the future, I can’t picture how it would taste with the milk or almond milk, but I like it by itself just fine! :D
This is everything I wanted it to be, BUT, I recommend going with distinctive over robust. All my matchas have been robust, but this one makes me realize some flavours are way too strong for robust or higher flavouring. It’s a tad artificial and a tad overpowering with robust, but it’s still damn delicious. I just use a smaller amount when mixing or using it in a smoothie.
I’ve been trying to cut down on my sugar consumption lately. I’m done having babies so it’s time to attempt to reclaim my body… hasn’t been nearly as easy to bounce back as it was pre-babies. So… I’ve given up one of my favorite things. Honey. Not for good, but until I feel more like myself again. Cue search for alternative sweeteners…
I like honey because it’s a whole food. No processing (I use raw unpasturized). Even Agave nectar is processed. Stevia is a chemical and tastes awful. So I was at New Season’s and asked the nutritionist for some help. She steered me to Yacon syrup. It’s a whole food and in 2 TBSP there is only 40 calories and I only ever use 1 tsp max of any sweetener. I tried it last night with some black tea. It tastes pretty decent, but can definitely overshadow the tea. Kind of a cross between molasses and maple syrup, but with a kind of nutty flavor to it.
So last night I was thinking of teas that yacon would mix well with and I thought my flavored matchas would go well and I was right! The cheesecake matcha mixed with the yacon syrup is so friggin good. Kind of nutty cheesecake flavor. 1 tsp yacon, 2 tsp matcha, 12ounces of water. YUMMMY. So creamy without any need for milk, which I normally add to matcha. This will definitely be turning into an afternoon ritual! I’m anxious to try it with the caramel or the creme brûlée or the caramel popcorn!!!! So fun!
p.s. I know Dr. Oz did some kind of special on Yacon. I’m not into all that stuff, simply like it for it’s sweetening effect. All of the miracle pill/syrup/diet stuff drives me crazy.
i dunno what yacon is..but it makes me think og bacon made from yaks. so i’m going to picture that instead..
LOL @Sil & yacon! a logical portmanteau of yak & bacon ;p @TastyBrew i agree- stevia is awful! i truly can’t stand it..has a horrible aftertaste…if that’s the only sweetener available, i’ll just drink the tea plain..
I just did the most amazing thing and i will never make matcha any other way again. Oh yeah. I’m feeling pretty smart right now.
I have some friends coming over in a bit to watch the final four games and need a little caffeine boost before all the beer starts being guzzled so I thought I’d make an iced matcha. I’ve already got my kitchen all cleaned up so I didn’t want to make much of a mess. I was back in my little tea nook and saw my breville milk cafe that I use to froth milk and remembered that it’s also a hot chocolate maker. That got my brain thinking. What if I just throw water and a splash of milk in the thing and then throw my matcha right in there.
Holy S&%t it’s so creamy and delicious. Perfectly mixed and frothy and creamy. I was going to pour it over ice but no way. This is delicious as is! And all I have to do is rinse the frothing mug and it’s ready for another use. I need to do a review of just the frother. I love that thing.
oh yeah, the cheesecake flavor is good too. That’s probably worth mentioning!
Woo! Sipdown! Thanks, CrowKettle. :)
I had this as a warm latte today, with 50/50 unsweetened almond milk and hot water… and then I added a couple spoons of sweetened condensed milk.
OMG. Amazing. So good. Wow. (I feel like the tumblr shiba inu.)
Anyways, if you like matcha lattes sweetened, try some sweetened condensed milk! Totally adds to the dessert-for-breakfast feeling.
This one just tastes SO creamy and milky. I made it as a shaken latte with unsweetened almond milk this morning, and 1/4 tsp of sugar.
Really delicious, but I still like the French Vanilla more.
Thanks, CrowKettle for sharing the rest of this one with me! I have a couple more morning lattes, and then I’ll finally be done!
I really wasn’t sure on this one until I had it as a cold soy latte. It just works so well that way! Now I’ll have to try the French Vanilla.
The French Vanilla is just.. more. :) I really like it, and it would be such a good mixer in smoothies and stuff.
Nope. :) I rely on the kindness of friends for my Red Leaf, and I don’t think that one has made it through my cupboard yet.
Remind me…I can add matcha to the box going out that way….as long as I’ve opened the flavour I can send it
All the matcha? LOL. I’ll message you and let you know which ones I’d LOVE to try. They’re in your cupboard?
I had a tsp of this in unsweetened almond milk as a latte today. I think I prefer the French vanilla I had yesterday… The flavour was simpler, which worked for me better.
I will still enjoy using up the few servings I have left. This definitely is still good, just not as good.
Thanks, Crowkettle!
The last of this sample from CrowKettle! I think I like these flavoured matchas better cold, and with regular soy milk instead of unsweetened almond milk. Maybe that’s due to the amount of “green tea lattes” I’ve had at Starbucks. IDK.
This is really good today. I can taste the sweet vanilla pudding flavour, I didn’t have to add any sugar, and yum. I wish I had more coconut matcha to try it this way. That would have been so good!
(I did actually just get up and I am just drinking my first tea. Sometimes life happens this way.)
Robust, from CrowKettle. Yes, I have all my highly scented samples sitting in a box on the counter, and I’m starting to randomly grab them in the morning. I must say it looks a bit suspect to have all these random tin foil packets in baggies with post-it notes!
This one is good, and yes it tastes kind of like vanilla pudding. I think I prefer the caramel matcha, though. I haven’t had a cream filled pastry in years (gluten and lactose intolerant!), and I kinda forget what they taste like.
As a latte with unsweetened almond milk and some sugar.
(I am working on a map with notes of all the Vancouver tea places, in preparation for meetups. Whee! Things to do when procrastinating on math.)
I love it here. I’m trying very very hard to not have to go away for more school. Going to try to make it work with what I have.
That’s awesome that you are doing that! I may be in Vancouver in July? It’s hard to tell, but Vancouver must be an adventurous maze when it comes to tea.
Did you get lemon from this one?
Hmm. Maybe a bit of lemon in the aftertaste, but I did put vanilla sugar in it today (I mean, Bavarian cream = pastry = vanilla!). I have a serving left, so I’ll make that one with plain sugar.
Also, yes. Definitely a maze. I’m emailing companies, even, because their websites say they exist but I don’t remember seeing them…
A lot. I’ve been to very very few of them. :)
http://goo.gl/maps/yzAd6 This is just the ones I’ve mapped so far. I’m sure there are more.
Ahh, no. I need to actually visit some places so I know what kinds of seating and stuff they have. I’m thinking it’ll just be a meet, sit, drink tea and have some nibbles (not high tea because $$$), swap. It’s too difficult to have a tea crawl without cars, or lots of transit time.
It’s really weird to be drinking matcha instead of my usual black/flavoured black tea this morning.
I still don’t get maple and sweet potato, but it’s a nice unassuming flavour. Made it as a latte just like yesterday, only twice as much of everything and in my travel mug!
Another sample from CrowKettle! Robust.
I needed a pick-me-up due to an early morning vet visit (I got up before 7! That time of the morning just should not exist..), and subsequent nap. Since all the matcha is making my kitchen smell amazing, I figured I should probably try to drink it all up first, before all my other teas smell like it too.
This one is odd. I’ve never had Lucuma, but the matcha smelled like fruit and, well, matcha. I think I’d have to compare a plain matcha to this one, as I just can’t really pick out the flavour. It’s not bad by any means, more like I don’t know what I’m looking for, and so I’m feeling a little lost, flavour-wise!
As always, this is a nice matcha. I made it as a latte with 2 tbsp water, 8 oz almond milk, 1/2 tsp sugar. Yum! If I have enough brains in the morning, I’ll make the rest of this up in a travel mug for a pre-math caffeine boost.
I’ve never even heard of Lucuma. xD Looks like a cross between a melon and a peach judging by that little picture.
Yeah, it’s odd. It’s a little fruity, a little green, a little earthy… Interesting, but not a flavour I think I’d purchase. :) Still, super neat to try it. I’m loving the Red Leaf matchas. (From Wiki: “The lucuma has particularly dry flesh which possesses a unique flavor of maple and sweet potato.” I don’t know that I get that, but ok.)
I’ve also never had, or even heard of, lucuma (I don’t know what possessed me to order this one). It’s different though. :)
Soo I’m pretty sure I’m over tired and full of tea…but the only thing that keeps popping into my head when I see this is..
Lacuuunnaa matcha-cha….what a wonderful day….lacuuna matcha-cha…it means no worries, for the rest of your days….
Uh yeah…don’t mind me..
Oh, I laughed when I got the email, I just didn’t log in on my phone and respond. :D I’m drinking this again right now, and I still don’t get maple and sweet potato. Oh well!
woah, let’s not get carried away there crowkettle…SURELY there is something out there on the internet :)
This is a good one. It took some work to figure out the right proportions (which I’m learning is key to all of them), but once I figure out the optimal for me I really enjoyed it. The macadamia nut flavor is done really well. I may mix it with a bit with caramel. Fun to experiment with these!
I have 3 mugs of different teas on my desk. Apparently I really don’t want to study today!
Since I had some “Silk True Coconut” in my fridge, I decided to try this cold. I added what I had left to a cup (sieved), added some hot water, frothed, topped with the coconut milk and ice. It ended up being about 10 oz with 1 tsp of matcha powder.
The coconut milk is terrible. :/ It’s somehow thick and watery at the same time. I can see this working with my beloved Almond Breeze, but sadly this was a waste of matcha and is going down the sink.
I’m glad I’m not the only one wrestling with studying on such a nice day. Don’t you hate it when you’ve gone through all the effort of making a perfect drink and then it turns out your milk malfunctioned?
Robust. From CrowKettle.
This is indeed coconutty. It’s not toasted coconut like DavidsTea’s coconut oolong, it’s more of a sweet baking coconut.
I’m having this as a latte, since that’s how I prefer my matcha. 250ml almond milk, a couple tbsp water to froth the matcha in, about 3/4 tsp matcha, and 1/2 tsp sugar. I sieved this matcha because it’s quite clumpy, I’m guessing that’s due to the flavour.
I do like this, but I think that one flavour level down would be even better. I can’t really tell there’s green tea here, and I’d like to taste it a bit.
Edit: That went down fast. Yum! Now for something completely different…
Thanks! I really want to try this one, so now I know to order the royal base and distinctive flavoring.
I’m definitely leaning towards the distinctive flavouring. :) This is good, but less flavour would be better.
Oooh, me want to try. I just get sad when the matcha makes so little, though my technique may be all wrong. I so want to try more matchas from Red Leaf Teas.
This was from my tea swap with Dinosara.
My first Red Leaf Matcha! Ive been meaning to try these for a while =) Im impressed with how well they flavored it – tastes genuinely fig-like! This was robust flavoring, so there wasn’t much green tea taste and more of the fig taste. Definitely can see trying all the flavors addicting!!
