1789 Tasting Notes
I had so much oolong and white tea today that I needed something decadent to finish the night. This is good. I wish it were more chocolately but it’s smooth, buttery, and creamy.
I’ll probably end up eating some of my stashed away chocolate bar tonight too… And if I resteep, I’ll make it a latte.
I’m still waiting for my Della Terra Teas order from Black Friday (#sadness) full of dessert blacks, and a few rooibos/honeybush samples, but my Zen Tea order came today!
After trying my oolong samples from Tea from Taiwan, I knew I wanted to try more oolongs so when Zen Tea started their 50% off sale (on Friday) I had to somehow justify ordering some. :P Good thing I did as a lot of the teas are sold out already! :O I got a lot for $21 (with shipping).
I picked up:
Oolongs – Coconut (50g), Monkey-Picked (20g) and Iron Goddess Mercy (20g).
Pu-erh – Loose. (20g) (Just so I could see what Pu-erh is.)
White – Toffee Dream. (50g) (Again because I don’t know what White Tea is like – I had it in DavidsTeas Cookie Dough but it was hidden?)
Rooibos – Raspberry Vanilla! (70g) (I had this as a sample first. I’m gifting 50g of this.)
Black – Assam Mangalam Second Flush FTGFOP1 (20g)(Because I haven’t had Assam and this one was highly rated. Maybe I’ll learn the difference between all these blacks)
The actual review is here. :P
With all these new teas, it was hard to decide which one to try. I’m happy I started with this one though. IT SMELLS SO GOOD.
I’ve had oolong enough now to recognize its characteristics better: with each sip I am getting toasty coconut notes, mixed in with the buttery / floral oolong. The coconut isn’t as strong as the initial smell would have me believe, but this is actually a good thing as I was worried the oolong would be overwhelmed and it isn’t. It seems like every oolong I try has complex flavors – this one is no different. Each sip is just a little different. AMAZING. The aftertaste is nice and creamy too. I will resteep it later!
I think it’s real coconut flavour too!
Preparation
Hope you get a chance. It’s a bit expensive but I really like it. I don’t normally drink a lot of oolong (maybe this will change) so I’m hoping 50g will last a long time!
I haven’t bought bagged tea in months, but I was tempted by this because I wanted holiday tea and I had nothing gingerbread-ish.
I couldn’t tell you how it is on its own, but I can tell you that it tastes great with frothy cream and brown sugar. I don’t think I’ll bother making it any other way! I like that I can have a decaf dessert tea for late night cravings.
A 20 bag box should last me months, and I’ll probably buy this again. So, guess I’m not 100% loose leafed.
I’m not usually one for desert teas, and starting to cull much many of my teabags, but one of my weaknesses is Candy Cane Lane in this line of Holiday teas.
Mmmmm. If i didn’t already have a few peppermint teas, I’d be tempted to try the Candy Cane Lane one!
Yum! I wish I had ordered some of this when I placed my order on Friday. I always see peppermint in teas, but this is the first spearmint.
It pairs really well with the gunpowder green tea. My mouth is both warmed by the tea and refreshed by the mint. Interesting!
Preparation
This really does taste a lot like licorice. I bought way too much of this, but it’s not the end of the world as it is enjoyable.
Each sip just creeps up on you: warm water, licorice, this crazy numbing mouthfeel that makes me feel like I’m sucking on licorice candy instead of drinking tea…
It’s definitely a step up from Stash’s licorice tea, which is all the licorice tea experience that I’ve had so far. I may up my rating as I empty my tin, but there is an odd spicy aftertaste I’m not sure about.
Preparation
Definitely black licorice! I guess I had better clarify as black licorice is a love it or hste it thing to most people.
First sip: coconut!
Second sip: coconut that turns into minty goodness
Third sip: mint mint coconut cream coconut!
I made a whole pot of this with 1.5 tsp. Looking forward to sipping it all night. I just bought 100g but I want to make it last.
I’m upping my rating a bit.
Hehe. I’m stingy with my tea. My excuse is that I want it to breathe in my tea ball? Nah, I’m just a terrible underleafer. I’ll add more if I think it’s not flavorful enough.
Earl Grey, hot.
We’re watching Star Trek so I ran off to make this, and added a splash of cream. Tasty, but not perfect. I’m looking forward to replacing this with a better Earl Grey.
Preparation
Our housemate has been watching a lot of Star Trek:TNG the past week. It’s a constant trickle of “earl grey, hot”!
Are you guys watching it on Netflix?
That’s why we’re watching so much of it, now that it’s available. My roommate and bf have seen all of it so it’s time to catch up.
This was given to me by a friend who wanted more out of this tea, and was hoping I might enjoy it more. So far, so good.
The black tea provides a nice base, while the vanilla and pomegranate are hints that sweeten it up. I don’t know that I would replace it when I run out, but I am enjoying it.
I feel mean rating it this low, but based on the smilies in the scale, this is where it belongs.
