dexter sent me this one as i really want to place an order with WP but when i built my cart it was several hundred $ lol Soooo dexter helped me out with a few samples from her cupboard of WP teas that were on my “want to try” list. I love this tea. I enjoyed multiple steepings of the sample dexter sent me and loved it. Oak, cocoa, vanilla..and a truly delicious base. I think my only “complaint” about this tea is the price :( It would for sure be a birthday sort of splurge tea for me – to be enjoyed. Thank you so much for sharing this with me dexter! delicious!

Cameron B.

I agree on the price. I always want to try the new “vanilla dreams” teas, but they’re just too expensive for me.

Sil

don’t get me wrong, i can appreciate that quality sometimes costs more, but i’m not sure i can personally justify it, at least not as often as i’d want too :(

Cameron B.

Absolutely. I just feel that I would rather buy multiple teas or more of a tea I love for the same price. :)

Cameron B.

But I haven’t tried any of the expensive ones, so if I had I may have a different opinion! Lol.

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Im HOPING to be able to make my more expensive teas available as 1/2oz in the next few weeks or so. It’s ridiculously laborious to blend the teas that contain Tahitian Vanilla…takes about 30 minutes per ounce. :/

Lariel of Lórien

I really want to try this one.

Dexter

Does the multiple steep make up for price? I hardly ever re-steep “flavored” teas (I understand this is blended not flavored). If you can multiple steep it, does that help offset cost. (I haven’t tried this one yet…) Happy that you like it. :))

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Mmm good point…I always get at least 4 steeps from this one.

Sil

Dexter….so yes and no hahaha my dilemma is that sometimes, I don’t WANT 36+oz of the same tea
Brendan – totally understand, and this one is lovely…I can appreciate the time and effort that crafting a tea can require.
Cameron – if/when Brendan has the half ounce option, I suggest trying it at the very least as a little splurge :) it’s quite lovely with the vanilla… This is more what I was hoping for with the verdant blends this month a la vanilla style

Cameron B.

Sil, I will definitely consider trying this one and Cocoa Amore if there’s a half ounce option. :)

And those stupid Verdant blends angered me! The vanilla was such an afterthought in all of them except maybe the tieguanyin…

Dexter

I understand that Sil – I agree don’t always want 4 big cups of the same tea. To save leaf/cost, should we be making 4 steeps of small cups. Make four 4oz cups rather than four 8oz cups? Do we need to change our habits to save money and make these more affordable?

Sil

Dex….probably…but I find unless I’m doing gongfu…I want my big delicious mugs of steaming tea….or else it cools too fast for me lol

Whispering Pines Tea Company

You could always halve the leaf amount and add infusion times together :)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

But yes, I’m hoping that a 1/2oz option will make these more accessible.

Lariel of Lórien

1/2 is a good sample size. Is that one the two awesome black teas?

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Not sure what you mean?

Lariel of Lórien

A blend of two awesome black teas?

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Ahh yes, it’s Imperial Gold Bud Dian Hong and Ailaoshan Black :-)

mj

What?? Those are two of my WP faves! I might have to splurge on this (and Cocoa Amore, naturally) in October for a birthday present to me…from me….I just won’t think about it too hard ;)

Lariel of Lórien

Yay for October birthdays. This blend sounds good for that season too. (I rather liked the Ailaoshan Black, almost as much as Fujian S’mores… I mean Black Tea.)

TheTeaFairy

Interesting discussion here…my own personal reflexion on it, is that for me, each buck is well spent only because those vanilla dreams teas make me happy beyond what they cost me. And I’m at a point where I like to drink less of everything, and more of my favourites. So in the end, again for my own personal situation, it’s not more expensive cause I have stopped ordering from many other companies and stick to the very few I want to drink tea from like forever!! Having said that, I understand that they do not fit every budget. But I will happily cut somewhere else, before I cut on my WP orders :-)

Ubacat

I’ve always wanted to sample the WP teas too but since most are black I doubt I would stock them on a regular basis.

TeaFairy, I know what you mean about drinking more of your favs. I’ve been reaching for lots of my favs lately too.

mj

Ubacat, you can order a sample pack for $5. Not all of the teas are available as samples, but a lot of them are :)

Sil

Teafairy – totally understand that, and i’m pretty sure that’s where i’ll end up once my life isn’t so hectic. For right now, i hate to waste money on teas that are a “luxury” if i know i’ll struggle to find time to actually have time to myself to sit and enjoy them, instead of the teas i drink while at work to make work more enjoyable with happy tea moments. Work tea sometimes gets forgotten, and i wouldn’t want to do that to my special teas :)

OMGsrsly

I’m with you, Sil. I need to have a stock of teas that are great in travel mugs or if left to cool, plus some teas I adore that I can just sit and sip on when I get home from work or have a lazy morning. :)

Lariel of Lórien

The samples are good, but a bit small.

Ubacat

I did see the samples. I might have to order some of them to try BEFORE they have a sale. Then I will know which ones to order. Thanks.

My granddaughter Schey is truly one of those special people (like MOST of you here on Steepster) with a giving heart…full of kindness and love. She loves me not in words, but with her time.

Nobody spends time with me other than her.

One of these days, she’ll be swept off her feet by someone that I know won’t be quite worthy of her…but that’s another story.

In the meantime, we have tea together, she calls me often…and yesterday she came over to bake with me.

Last year I decorated my home for Christmas and nobody came over. I felt bad. (This is something that happens to people when they get old) Young people are busy…(I know this) but it’s a hard reality to sit alone in a beautifully decorated room with your tea. Sigh…

I’ve learned to dig deeper into my heart this year. The source of my being happy is no longer dependent on having people around me, even though I do like it when I have a visit or when I go out to tea.

Schey is allergic to regular ‘Black Tea’. It makes her weep and she gets depressed and moody rather quickly. I’ve never seen anything like it. Puerh, green tea and oolong’s are all fine. I know the reason (too long to explain here).

When Schey arrived for our holiday baking, Pandora was set with classic crooners…Bing Crosby, Michael Buble, Nat King Cole…all the old tunes we could sing along ‘loudly’ in the kitchen. http://youtu.be/_ONkQD1uxkY

We made a double recipe of spice cake (grinding the spices ourselves) and then peanut butter chocolate fudge. http://flic.kr/p/ipxxdi

While the cakes were baking, we sat next to my Christmas tree and watched two recorded epidodes of Once-Upon-A-Time. http://flic.kr/p/ipwDAn

I made a combo tea: Peppermint Bark Herbal and loose Shu Puerh in a large pot.

I know this might sound strange to some people…but most chai’s and herbal blends taste great with loose puerh, especially with cream and honey or sugar. (This tea can be rebrewed once or twice)

The flavor of mint and spice with the puerh I chose (this one was mild) was festive. Perfect pairing for our afternoon! I brewed the tea 3 minutes…longish-yes…but I didn’t add lots of puerh, and the Herbal needs time to release (not the 1 minute suggested by Verdant).

Crafting a latte binds the herbal blend and puerh together into a rich, smooth holiday drink.

I took a picture of Schey. Her peanut butter chocolate dessert was going to both the servers at Happy Lucky’s Tea House and employees at the local Grocery Store. My cake is for tea with my 3 year old grandson’s.

Don’t you think that best memories we have are doing things with other people? This usually doesn’t cost much money, but takes some of our time.

Don’t forget to take pictures over the holidays. (So many people forget to record time with people they love and time is short!)

Wish I could bake together and have tea with all of you!

TheTeaFairy

«One of these days, she’ll be swept off her feet by someone that I know won’t be quite worthy of her…» this is such a statement of your love for her…
This review made me shed some tears…for totally different reasons, I can relate about this review, you know why I think :-)
Bonnie, I wished I could spend a Christmas eve in your company, you could teach me how to bake, and we could share a few cuppa togheter!!!

Sil

hugs If i was closer, I’d come visit for the holidays! :)

Bonnie

I never lie when I say that you are welcome!

JustJames

we have tea date at some point, i do believe, though e haven’t nailed down a date and time, lol.

Bonnie

You talkin to me James?!!!

JustJames

i am! i thought you invited me down last year to try out your local brilliant tea house….

ifjuly

this day sounds like heaven to me—hanging out together in a warm kitchen that smells of cake baking away in the oven, festive and special tea in pots to share, music from another time that makes one nostalgic, and a beautiful home with a loving grandmother. i am jealous of your granddaughter (my grandparents passed away quite some time ago…i miss my grandmother’s kitchen to thi day, more so than ever around the holidays).

Bonnie

I did! You should come here! Besides…there are other tea places to go to if you’re one of the secret Celestial Seasonings Tea drinkers (factory close by…), and tea houses in Boulder (Ku Cha, Dushanbe).

ifjuly

augh, now i’m thinking about her and well, hello there unexpected afternoon crying. thanks Bonnie (i do NOT mean that sarcastically). your posts are a treasure.

JustJames

there’s alot of that going around i think…. tis the season for a bit of weepy, ifjuly. nothing wrong with that. i miss my gran horribly. i have a whole jar of tea i’ll likely never drink because the smell reminds me of her… and the tin she made my last xmas cake in……

Bonnie

Every Christmas, it would be nice to share these memories on Steepster and with friends. Some people adopt an older person who’s alone. (The tea community seems especially kind to elders) I hardly know anyone my own age. 65 isn’t ancient, but some of my disabilities at times makes me feel 85 and then I snap back to 65 going on 30 again. Become the moments you enjoyed with parents and/or grandparents. Bake, put on music and sing. If you went to Church, Synagogue or some event this time of year with grandma, do so again and remember that love. You can become what you treasure.

ifjuly

Thanks JustJames. I know exactly what you mean about those smells and the tin, things like that. I’m sorry (but also happy in a way) you miss your grandmother too!

Bonnie, you’re right. The first few years I was on my own I kind of treated holidays like any other day—often worked overtime, didn’t cook or decorate, etc.—and in retrospect I think it was because I knew it would be painful, the contrast between what I could do just starting out alone with what I remembered. But slowly over the years I’ve become more festive, and I get a lot of enjoyment out of fashioning my own domestic rituals to look forward to seasonally and gradually cultivating my own family life. Trimming the tree, hanging and stuffing stockings, making certain dishes only once a year, and waiting until just the right time to play certain music, visiting people when we’re all cheerful because of the festive season…those things do make me feel like I have a home in this world.

I hope you have a wonderful holiday season! <3

Bonnie

Thank you! Not to be morbid, but one day (not too far off) my life as it is will end too. My treasure is measured in how much I love and the memories I leave with others. I am ever mindful of how precious time is. My life is Blessed every day with discovery and wonder!

tigress_al

I wish I would have known my grandmothers. I never got the chance :(.
I enjoy your beautiful stories of spending time with your grandchildren. They are so lucky to have a grandmother like you. They will cherish it forever.

boychik

i consider myself lucky because I knew my 3 great grandmas and 2 grandmas. unfortunately I have only one now, she is 89. I cherish those moments when i come visit her. its almost everyday. i think i love her more than my parents

Bonnie

I share stories to say..“Hay everybody, you will be where I am some day maybe…this is what you can do too. And if you don’t have a grandma, find one!” My own grandmother’s were dud’s. Really. I decided to be what they were not…like watching Hallmark Christmas Movies or It’s a Wonderful Life and deciding…“I want to create that kind of experience for my family!” You don’t wait for it, you make it happen.
When my mom was alive…the whole family went caroling in her neighborhood, pushing her wheelchair down the street. NOBODY came to their door to hear us!!! After awhile we began to giggle. It was so strange that nobody wanted to listen to us caroling that we sang even louder and laughed as we sang joyfully up and down that gloomy street.
You make it what it is in your heart no matter what is happening around you!

ifjuly

“You don’t wait for it, you make it happen.” and “You make it what it is in your heart no matter what is happening around you!” Such an awesome outlook, I agree. It reminded me of some of my lady friends who, when I got married and started packing bento lunches for my husband, were all like “I wish I had a wife to pack me awesome lunches I could look forward to every day!” And I said jovially “you can always be your own wife!” It’s easy to forget sometimes.

Bonnie

This is why I always have tea in my purse to share even when I go to my tea shop. Today, the owner shared a blend he created…then the manager made a free pot of tea with some spice and puerh. We’ve become family. I stopped in the cheese shop and bought a chunk of Earl Grey dusted cheese and ginger chocolate (I know the little shops around the tea house). I haven’t lost my sense of wonder and delight…the joy of life. Believe me though, it’s challenging at times to overcome depression and loneliness. I have to work on celebrating life.

Indigobloom

Bonnie, move to Toronto. I’d have tea with you all the time LOL

Bonnie

Thanks I heart-bloom! Thanks a look at my little grandsons who came over for tea at 8:30 AM this morning (man that’s early) on my Facebook Bonnie Johnstone. Merry Christmas!

CelebriTEA

This sounds so lovely ;~}

Bonnie

Smiles back to you! ;]

Indigobloom

Awww. You have an awesome fam Bonnie!!

Bonnie

We’re kinda all family here…

Indigobloom

How true is that! :)

Thank you VariaTEA for sending this my way!

i got no chocolate? but i got a lovely creamy, vanilla-esque cinnamon bomb though! very nice. might have to look into this shop- next semester!

on a completely separate note, had to drop a line to my prof asking for more pages for an assignment….. i will cut and paste his reply:
‘… you should strike some balance between your school work and life.’ buwahahahahaha! yeah! if you promise me A+’s no matter what.

did he just obliquely accuse me of having no life? or would you call that direct? hmmm.

Preparation
Boiling 4 min, 0 sec
VariaTEA

I am glad you liked it. And yes, your prof may have accidentally (or perhaps not accidentally) accused you of not having a life.

JustJames

thank you so much for sending it! gotta love a prof that puts up with grading extra work and then calls it like he sees it…. politely! lol!!!
yours should be there soon i hope!

yyz

Maybe he’s a little envious. I remember some of my undergraduate profs (mostly department heads) complaining that 70% of their time was dedicated to finding funding/politics, 20% to their own research and grad students, and 10% to the classroom.

JustJames

well, he might be indulging me a bit because i appear to be the only tech savvy student willing to work with networking software for the NGOs, not just mine. also the fact that i have over 100 hours in and it should be more 36 and i’m trying to make it self-sustaining for after i leave as well. my classmates are just starting now, i’ve been at it full time for a month. (no sleep, lotsa tea…. that’s why no reviews!)

yyz

Goodness, with that amount of work in, it would be nice if you could at least get a tax receipt for your volunteer time. Sounds exciting, but don’t push yourself towards burnout!

JustJames

you say what i think…. and yet there’s no one else with my particular spray of skill sets: art, language, people, programs, photo editing with a strong real world network as well. it’ll be fine…. probably. lol.

yyz

Anyways I feel for you…

JustJames

thank you! xoxo…. are you enjoying your bits and pieces?

yyz

I am.. So far I have revisited Hepburn, and Toffee Dream, I was kind of too busy to give a tea proper attention today. I wm planning to explore something new tomorrow, looking forward to it!

JustJames

i’m crazy busy, if you don’t have time to review i’d be the last one to gripe. just thought i’d ask!! =0)

yyz

No harm in it, James they all look fabulous! I think I’m going to have to close my eyes and reach in, to decide where to begin. I’ve also been wasting time contemplating a Betjeman order.

JustJames

i did NOT just read that. i have enough tea… i have enough tea… i will not look them up online!! lol!

yyz

It’s a little bit more effort. To get decent shipping you have to do a phone order from Fouvrac in Montreal. They carry the full line, but don’t have a webstore. So you have to check out the teas at the Betjeman and Barton site. Shipping they said was cheap, someone had an order sent to California for $10.

yyz

Fouvrac seems to carry a lot of companies. They have Betjeman, and a lot of Kusmi, but I have also seen Fauchon, Compagnie Coloniale, and Marriage Frères tins in the pictures on their Facebook page.

VariaTEA

I saw Montreal and perked up. I suppose I have another store to check out now.

VariaTEA

Also this is a list (granted an incomplete one) of the tea companies they have: http://www.lefouvrac.com/grocery-product/en_tea.html

yyz

https://m.facebook.com/lefouvrac?id=220918191303544&_rdr. They have 2 locations. I’m not sure which is better but the Betjeman site lists the Fleury location. http://www.betjemanandbarton.com/en/content/9-world

They have really cute teaware as well!

VariaTEA

The other location is closer but realistically the difference is insignificant unless you are driving there.

JustJames

I AM COVERING MY EYES!!!!!! i am not reading! i have been SO well behaved. CURSES! lol.

yyz

Looks like you’re fine going to the Laurier location anyways. They apparently have an annex to the store dedicated to the Betjeman teas. http://voir.ca/voir-la-vie/art-de-vivre/2012/12/06/home-sweet-home/

VariaTEA

Yeah. Damn. I really shouldn’t be buying more. It is just so tempting though.

yyz

Beware, according to the fleury St description they carry 48 companies teas.

yyz

And it’s smaller than the Laurier one

VariaTEA

Hahaha. This could hurt my wallet. Perhaps I should avoid the store.

yyz

True, it does look dangerous. If you go set a limit, but it looks at least you can buy 50g.

yyz

James, we kind of hijacked this discussion, but you know when I finally get around to placing an order, some samples will be coming to you.

JustJames

ha ha ha ha…. hijack away! i am a man of mettle! i’ll misbehave- i just have to save it up for next semester is all =0)

OMGsrsly

Oh wow, yyz, that is a serious thing to consider! I could get a lot of things I’ve been wanting to try all with just one order. :D

drank Cotton Candy by Della Terra Teas
303 tasting notes

Seriously, guys, you are all just a bunch of enablers. OMGsrsly peer pressured me into having a small evening foods, I made a pitcher of Jardin Sauvage because of TheTeaFairy, and then DTT posted about bringing old blends back into stock and I remembered this and absolutely had to have it.

And yes, this sample is still alive and there is enough left for one more cup. I was going to have some on my birthday, but I ended up having so much other good stuff there was no room for more tea.

This is still so tasty.

And I still feel dirty for liking it so much.

Considering possibly nudging it up five points. Shhh. Tell no one.

Preparation
Boiling 5 min, 0 sec
VariaTEA

Does it actually taste like cotton candy though?

Anna

Not even remotely. Here is what I think it tastes like: http://steepster.com/clareborn/posts/227538

TheTeaFairy

Haha! Hilarious, yes we are a bunch of enablers, aren’t we? Like I spent my entire day under a blanket, reading a book and sipping oolong because of TeaTiff! ( yes, I proudly play the blaming game!!)

Anna

IT’S EVERYONE’S FAULT.

VariaTEA

So it seems like my first thoughts about this being similar to DAVIDs Birthday Cake is probably right. Thank you for sharing :)

OMGsrsly

LOL. I can’t believe that you reading “frozen girlfriend” from my gf lasagne made you HUNGRY.

Anna

THAT OBVIOUSLY MEANS GIRLFRIEND LASAGNE OKAY.

Also girls are totally tasty.

Anna

And VariaTEA – I haven’t tried that yet, but I’m going to try to trick Sil into getting some for me for our swap!

VariaTEA

No need to trick Sil because I have lots and am happy to share. Also, I will be by David’s tomorrow and can pick stuff up :)

Anna

Aww, thank you. You’re the best. <3

Sil

hey! i need tea to send to her! don’t steal things i can go get for her! lol

VariaTEA

Sil, I am sure there is plenty to send and this way I save you a trip to DAVIDs.

Anna

No, because Sil must go there and get me the Movie Night she LOATHES BEYOND WORDS AND COMPREHENSION.

It’s pretty funny.

Anna

Also I love you guys.

VariaTEA

Alright. So I will leave this for Sil to get you unless instructed otherwise prior to our eventual swap

Sil

lmao…. it’s all a vicious plot to make me go to davids…but i’m ok with that… though honestly, we should all just get together and make one GIANT BOX for anna that takes like 2 ppl to carry…

OMGsrsly

I’m packing my box as full to 500g as possible. Scale is out, and everything. :D :D :D

Sil

…uh that’s anna’s box right?

lol

OMGsrsly

Yes. My box for Anna, I meant. Clarification achieved. Although your box is a little bigger than Anna’s, Sil.

VariaTEA

Sil, we should!! Just combine everything and it will be a cupboard explosion of tastiness.

Sil

Bigeger…but lighter? hopeful

OMGsrsly

Lighter only due to Anna’s non-tea contents, I think.

OMGsrsly

I’ll weigh before I finally manage to send (next week now because I’m visiting family this weekend) and report back. :D

Anna

Aaaaaaaaaah THE REVENGE OS SIL.

Anna

Wait, I just read this whole thing – OMGsrsly, what are you DOING?! What is in this box? I DEMAND TO KNOW. No, wait I don’t want to know. Or… no. But. NO. ARGH.

OMGsrsly

I am not in the box. Do not fear. (I do not weigh less than 500g.)

Anna

It would be so awesome if you were in the box and I opened it and you came walking out and it turned out YOU’VE BEEN THAT SIZE ALL ALONG.

Anna

Also, you’re lucky you don’t weigh less than 500g, because otherwise I would never let you out of my purse and that might get boring for you.

OMGsrsly

I guess it would depend on what you have in your purse! Any interesting books? :)

Anna

I would build an entire kingdom for you in my purse.

Oh dear, I can feel that this is going to be a really long post. I’ll let you all know when I’m going to actually start writing about the tea, so you can skip ahead if you like.

My Teavivre order arrived! I wasn’t even expecting it yet. I’ve ordered stuff from China before, obviously, and I know it usually takes a couple of weeks to get here, but I don’t know why I hadn’t realised that it had actually been that long since I ordered.

Oh well, I’m certainly not complaining! :D I have unpacked my tea and the cats have given the box and the wrappings a very thorough sniffing. I don’t know what they kept the wrapping supplies next to in China, but whatever it is, it’s very interesting to cats.

While the wrapping was undergoing such a detailed inspection, I tried to decide which one to try first. And then I smacked my forehead because DUH! Self, don’t be an eedjit. You obviously start with the Tan Yang.

If you are wondering what’s so obvious about that, you have not been following me for long enough. Fujian produces the majority of all my very favourite black teas, and my most beloved type of all is Tan Yang. This is the type where I have been known to draw little hearts on the label. So yeah. Obvious. :)

The first time I ordered from Teavivre, I believe the company was still very young, but they had marched right into the hearts of many Steepsterites with their high quality and their sample program. For me, it was the Bailin gong fu that finally drew me in and made me place that first order. There was a contact form on the site that you could fill out if you had questions or suggestions, so I asked if they were planning on stocking a Tan Yang in the future. I can’t remember what exactly the reply was, but I think I was told that they would look into it.

Some time passed and eventually Teavivre did indeed offer a Tan Yang. Oh, how I coveted it! But unfortunately circumstances conspired against me and I didn’t feel like the time was right to buy it. We’ve been frugal, you know, what with having our wedding and then a bit later Husband having a stint with unemployedness, and now we want to start saving up so we can eventually buy a house. It’ll probably be at least a year before we’ll even consider talking to the bank, but we still have to start now.

So I sat here and watched other people drink this highly coveted tea, and then I COULD NOT TAKE IT ANY LONGER, flails AAAAAAAAARGH!!!! pant pant

I cracked and ordered. As long as I control myself I can totally save up and buy interesting tea now and then at the same time. Besides, I was getting to that point where every time I saw someone write about it, I felt a little guilty that I hadn’t bought any myself yet. You know, having suggested that they get some in their shop…

Okay, the actual drinking of the tea starts here!

The aroma is quite mild, and it’s has a bit of a honeyed caramel-ish note to it. There’s a little bit of grain underneath too. I suspect this is a more well behaved version than the (Most Highly Beloved of All) Te Ji I get from TeaSpring. But then again, that one is pretty unruly at times, so it wouldn’t be difficult to be better behaved.

Oh, so sweet! So caramel-y! There’s a bit of malt and cocoa as well, but I think it tastes mostly like sugar and caramel. I mentioned yesterday that I don’t like sugar in tea, but what I meant was that I don’t like sugar added to tea. When it is naturally occurring like this, I like it just fine. It has to do with the way added sugar changes the mouthfeel for me. Anyway, first sip gives my sugar-y caramel-y flavouring, and a summerly note of… sip sip grass?

GRASS??? o.O Well, that’s new. It’s not in overwhelming amounts, though, (like what happens with most Darjeelings for me) so it doesn’t become unpleasant.

Underneath that, and especially at the moment just before I swallow is the very important grain-y note. An awesome Fujian would only be half as awesome without that note. There is only one type of tea in which a good strong note of grain is more important, and that’s in Keemuns.

Still, like with all the notes in here, it’s fairly calm and civilized and to my surprise I find I quite enjoy that. I mean, I love that the Te Ji tastes so riotously wild sometimes, but I’m getting older and slower, and sometimes it’s better with a tea that matches.

My cup appears to have become empty… I don’t usually finish drinking before I’m finished writing. I must have needed it.

That’s it. If anybody needs me further today, I’ll be in the kitchen drawing little hearts on this label.

Sil

i’ll need to add this one to my next order

Angrboda

I went for the one that came with a tin. It’s a really nice tin too. Double lid and everything. :)

Dinosara

Yay! Glad to hear that you love this one.

Angrboda

I do! I slurped it all down in big mouthfuls. I just couldn’t stop!

Hallieod

Wow – I know nothing about any of these teas, and I’m craving this one so much now! :) Love the whole tasting note.

Angrboda

Hallieod, go forth and introduce yourself to Tan Yang. :D It’s my favourite type ever and if you enjoy Keemuns or the Laoshan Black from Verdant, I think you would enjoy Tan Yang as well.

Hallieod

I will obey! I will benefit from your kind words and not try to imitate your restraint in buying! (I have a sample of the Laoshan Black from Sil, and have been keeping it for the perfect sampling occasion, but now I have a mission, so will try it tomorrow. And then order from Teavivre!)

LadyLondonderry

As soon as I read “Tan Yang,” I knew where this review was going. :) Glad you’ve found another one to love!

ashmanra

Ordering!

Angrboda

LadyLondonderry, sometimes I suspect that people who have followed me for 30 seconds would guess that. :p

Ashmanra, you won’t regret it. (But if you do, I’ll drink it for you)

Rie

Angrboda,
Just to confirm your suspicions, the first thing I knew for certain about you was your love of Fujian black. :D

Angrboda

LOL! :D Hardly a secret, is it. :D

ssajami

Angrboda, quite a while ago, as a direct result of reading one of your glowing reviews of the Tan Yang Te Ji, I added some of it to my TeaSpring order.

I have since become thoroughly addicted to that tea. Each time I replenish, my supply of Te Ji disappears so very quickly. There is not a single tea in my stock that I go through so fast, and sadly, I cannot re-order it as often as I’d like. Sigh.

So yeah, now you’ve got me coveting another Tan Yang….

Angrboda

Mwahahaha!! My work here is done. :D

KenS

Love the post, I really enjoy your passionate writing and plan on trying one of these soon :o)

Oh my! I’ve had far too much caffeine today; I seriously need to shut’er down. Can anyone else hear my heart beat?!

Clearly I need something sans caffeine – Honeybush to the rescue!!!! That name doesn’t sound heroic enough, it should be something like Super-Honeybush! Or Honeybushman! Or Captain Honeybush I know… Cap’n honeybush! You know, like Cap’n crunch. I don’t think I’ve ever tried that cereal before, but ever since I was a kid that name has always made me laugh. What is going on? Why am I talking about a kid’s cereal? FOCUS!!! Yeesh!

Oh! Speaking of kids…. Time for another episode of strange childhood confessions! This tea kind of reminds me of the strawberry shortcake doll I had as a child. I’m probably remembering this all wrong because I’m hopped-up on caffeine, but I’m pretty sure I tried tasting my strawberry shortcake doll because it smelled so darn good. That was probably sometime last week… just kidding! Even though that was many many many years ago, I can guarantee that this tea tastes better than that old strawberry shortcake doll.

This attempt at tealogging is falling apart, Have I actually said anything useful? Hmmm…to recap: this tea tastes better than my childhood doll….yeah real useful Nadia! Hmmm …o.k., so to keep it in terms that I can use without distracting myself:
Tea? Good!
Reorder? Heck yes!

Whew! that required a lot of focus!

Wow! There are a lot of exclamation points in this tealog!

Darn you Caffeine!

Off to try and focus on my to do list!….

Pumpkin Pie Matcha

Buy it here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/pumpkin-pie-matcha.html

I really don’t know how Red Leaf Tea is making any real profit here with their Free Matcha Program – See link here – http://www.redleaftea.com/free-matcha/
but I tell you what I sure have profited from this program – my matcha stash is growing! As long as I don’t suck it all down or send out so many samples that its gone before it has a chance to grow lol.

I have to admit it is hard not to share the wealth and it is hard not to want to drink nothing but matcha all day long. I have kept myself going easy on matcha though because I do prefer matcha shakes, smoothies, and lattes and the fact is I don’t need all those calories nor do I want to have to keep going to the store to buy more stuff to make all that with. So I have allowed myself one sometimes two matcha per day.

So I got my latest shipment – again Red Leaf Tea delivers on their super fast shipping! Now I am located only two states away from them but still I would bet doughnuts to dollars that they would get your shipment to you at light speed regardless where you are located! Mine arrived in the characteristic two days!

So here I sit with five new matcha flavors!! WOO HOOO and I only paid a little over thirty dollars for all of them due to the added promotion they have going on now for writing a lengthy review which mine tend to be when it comes to matcha anyway! When I get into something new I get really excited about it and tend to be more wordy. So with that said I decided on Pumpkin Pie Matcha to begin with. I have been having autumn fever lately and nothing says fall like pumpkin pie!

Here it is again: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/pumpkin-pie-matcha.html

So when I opened the package, and for those who have never received a package from Red Leaf Tea, their matcha come in pretty shiny gold foil packages but they are not self sealing, no zip lock, etc so you have to plan ahead for a container or purchase one from Red Leaf – 3.00 for a small that holds up to 45 grams or 4.00 for a large that holds up to 120 grams. I always get a small tin myself. Anyway, when I opened the package and took that initial whiff of goodness I was floored! What I was smelling was in fact fresh, creamy, pumpkin pie filling! It smelled very familiar to the stuff you buy in a can but yet there was something more complex to it. It actually smelled more like what my great grandmother used to make way back in the day. I swear I could also smell pie crust baking along with the aroma of raw pumpkin and spices wafting about. This was going to be GOOOOD! So this is the one I selected to try first among so many other wondrous smells from the four other matcha I selected.

Getting out my scoop, whisk, and bowl I was so nervous and excited. Like a kid at Christmas or ummm Thanksgiving, anticipating my pie! Could this really be THAT good? As I put the initial amount of water in the bowl to begin the paste and starter forth I was hit square in the face with the aroma of spices but clove was most predominant. I took a sip… POW nutmeg, clove, cinnamon … in that order. The clove was a bit overwhelming, a bit too intense, I did go with Robust flavoring but there was absolutely no sweetness to the flavor and the spices covered up the natural sweetness of the green tea. I was a bit bummed but since I am one to usually make milkshakes, lattes, etc anyway I went for my normal method. I added ice to a tall glass, some milk, a splash of vanilla creamer, and the tea. OMYUMNESS! This is what I was looking for! Creamy, rich, spiced, pumpkin pie love.

So yes in the natural state this tea was a little too intense for me, but lets break it down. First of all I do not normally drink my matcha straight. Second of all I did opt for Robust flavoring, and lastly, I always over scoop for some reason. I know I do this, I have no idea WHY I do this, I do this with matcha and every tea I steep. I always want a flavor to hit me in the face and most of you know that about me, so in this case I got what I asked for and then some lol.

I would like for this tea to be a bit sweeter in its straight form but again I feel like the intensity of the spices covered the natural green tea powder sweetness. Its a mixture of things but next time I will go with Distinctive perhaps and I bet it will be more to my liking. The thing is though when I add my milk and ice, and in this case the splash of vanilla creamer it is PERFECTION. I mean absolute and total BLISS!

Now I will add that when this particular flavor of matcha is in this form you do lose some of the matcha goodness – from the tea powder itself, whereas if it were in distinctive flavor I think it would taste a bit more matcha – ish. BUT it does still retain enough of the matcha flavor to be appreciated and of course matcha has its own texture which I love. Yes I use a strainer but I can feel the matcha grain still in this which is nice especially with this flavor it seems to just belong there.

So end result. I would absolutely recommend this flavor – that is if you like Pumpkin Pie. I can’t wait to make a latte for my husband when he gets home from work because Pumpkin Pie is his all time favorite dessert! I would suggest you get the robust flavor only if you plan to make lattes, shakes, smoothies etc but if you like to have your matcha straight then I would go with distinctive.

Here is what my matcha was composed of:
Options:
Size : Small
Matcha Quality: Starter (Basic Grade)
Flavor: Robust
Storage : Add Small Metal Tin Container (Holds up to 45g)

Note: I do believe that my basic starter matcha was upgraded to Royal (Premium Grade) due to them being out of starter matcha but I am not positive of this. Either way I find even the starter grade being wonderful an far better of a grade than other places I have purchased matcha from before at a supposedly superior grade!

One last time here is where to get this matcha:

http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/pumpkin-pie-matcha.html

TeaEqualsBliss

DRAT! I’m going to have to get some matchas from them and soon! It’s driving me nuts! I couldn’t see it on the website is there a free shipping offer if you buy so much – your overall total, I mean?

Will Work For Tea

1,162 words – are you going for some sort of record?! J/K!

I’ve been leaning more toward Fallish-type flavors lately and your review is very tempting. I’ll probably cave and make an order today, but will most likely be for two other flavors… We’ll see how long I can hold out on the Pumpkin Pie Matcha… ;)

Azzrian

Free shipping I believe if you spend 75 I think. As you put things in your cart you will get a message in the upper right side that says your shipping has been adjusted.

Azzrian

LOL curious to see what you decide on!

Mercuryhime

For matcha, 60 grams will get you free shipping. Doesn’t have to be all 60 of the same matcha either. :)

Azzrian

Okay that is more what I thought based on that usually once I have two small matcha in my cart it adjusts to free shipping! Thanks!

Mercuryhime

NO prob. :) I have no idea how Red Leaf is making a profit here either. I really hope he is though!

Azzrian

Me too! I guess it is the cost of getting your business off the ground and truly this IS the best advertising there is! But I do hope he is not going broke!

Matcha Outlet

Thank you for the review. :-)
Here are some of our comments:
1. To promote our new line of flavored matcha, instead of paying Google for advertising, we decided that word of mouth will be a lot better strategy. We get reviews + links and our reviewers get some free matcha. Win – win situation. At some point we’ll have to stop this promo, but we’ll let you know in advance.
2. After lowering the prices at the beginning of the year, we could not offer free shipping for all matcha teas, but still wanted to make it available somehow, so we decided to make it offer for larger purchase. Any purchase of matcha (only matcha) for amount larger than $47 will qualify for free shipping.

TeaEqualsBliss

So – if I bought – say $50 or more of numerous/various sizes and flavors of matcha’s I would get free shipping? As long as it was over $47 and Matcha’s ONLY, right? Just wanted to know for sure! Thanks :)

Azzrian

Excellent thank you for the clarification :)

Azzrian

From my experience you CAN also get regular teas but your MATCHA total has to be 47 or more before the other teas are added into the total.

TeaEqualsBliss

COOL. When/If I do place that order I have been wanting to place it will ALL be matcha! Bwahahahahah! MATCHA….ahhhhhhhh!

TeaEqualsBliss

Speaking of which – Red Leaf Tea – I posted a note for you in the Vegan or Not Vegan Thread in Discussions :)

LiberTEAS

I think I’m going to order again today too. I know I shouldn’t, but, I want to get the boysenberry matcha while it is still on sale.

Matcha Outlet

TeaEqualsBliss: Yes you are correct, you can buy many different matcha teas and if the total is over $47, the shipping will be free. That’s the promo right now. Not guaranteed it will not change in the future for some other variation.
Azzrian: If you but Matcha and some other teas, your total needs to be at least $75 to get free shipping. If it’s not, it will have to be adjusted.

Azzrian

Oh no. Sorry to misinform people on that. Thats too bad because it kind of dissuades people from buying other teas then unless they plan to spend 75 anyway. Its nice that you offer to adjust it though!

devvyleys

Here’s how their free matcha program works: Azzrian, you almost single-handedly have made me decide to order from Red Leaf TODAY! Thanks for all the great reviews, now I just have to make the hard decision of what to get.

LiberTEAS

sigh I did it again. I bought more matcha just now. Bad me. Bad bad bad me. (shakes head) I’m very bad.

Azzrian

Check out the Orders thread and see what I just got for 47 cents!
AMAZING!
LOL LiberTEAS once you see how much you can get in return if you get your reviews up fast before the special promo ends you will have made money!
:)

devyleys – its a hard decision but you can’t go wrong they are all really really great!

James R

That sounds really good…I might mix it with some almond milk to make a latte. I haven’t tried Red Leaf but the program sounds intriguing.

LiberTEAS

@Azzrian: I know. The deal is too amazing to not take advantage of, seriously. I’ve already been taking advantage of it. :)

Azzrian

yeah hehe you do already know about it :)

Daisy Chubb

Ohh I’m holding out for autumn for this matcha, but it sounds SO good! I’ll probably get the gingerbread one too :)

Azzrian

That is another one I considered but decided to wait until autumn or until it goes on sale.

This is a tea that I was very excited to work on. I love love love fresh maple syrup but when I was young I never liked it. I would always use fresh fruit or butter (before being vegan) or ice cream or whipped cream but I could not stand maple syrup. It wasn’t until my 20s that I was coerced into giving maple syrup another chance. Before that I had only ever tried Aunt Jemimas or some other artificial syrup that doesn’t even contain maple syrup. Now I buy my syrup from a farmers markets or Whole Foods. I’m still making up for lost maple syrup time.

I decided on using the Nilgiri Frost Oolong as a base for a number of reasons. The tea had some similar characteristics to the flavor of maple and pecan and I knew the notes of the tea would mesh well with the flavoring. Also, it had a nice weighty body. A thin body would not seem right for a maple blend. The leaves are long and strong enough to carry some heavier chunks of pecans. I love to use high quality bases that work with the flavorings and not just simply cover them.

The base tea is a Nilgiri Frost Oolong grown at a high altitude that exposes the tea leaves to a light frost during some of the winter nights. This tea is grown in limited quantities because of the special conditions that must exist. It is a sweet tasting tea that has citrus, pecan, peach, and oak notes.

The leaves of Maple Pecan Oolong are long, thin, and wiry, ranging from chocolate to charcoal in color. Large chunks of pecans are present. The leaves produce an intoxicatingly sweet aroma. Without sugar, the tea is naturally lightly sweet with a light maple and pecan flavor. Citrus and oaky notes are also presenet. Reducing the tea to 1 teaspoon for 8oz of water will reduce some of the citrus and oaky notes. With some sugar the maple and pecan notes are intensified and the citrus and oaky notes are lighter but produce an almost crust like flavor. It tastes just like a pecan maple pie. The maple lasts long after the sip and I can taste it on my lips.

I know what you mean about syrup… my hubby always goes with the Aunt Jemima or other maple flavored syrups (sugar free) and even when they aren’t sugar free (I can’t have aspartame) these syrups are just icky. There is such a difference between those grocery store syrups and the real maple syrup. This blend sounds amazing, it is one that I definitely MUST try soon!

Azzrian

Oh yes this is a must have!

Helena

Oh I must try this soon! :D

tigress_al

Agreed, another order is in my near future!

Oh! I definitely have to try this tea. YUM.

Butiki Teas

LiberTEAS-I don’t know anyone can do those syrups. Ick.

I’m so glad this tea is sounds good to everyone.

Ashley Bain

Oh my gosh I can’t wait to try this one. I LOVE grade B maple syrup. When I was little I rarely used syrup either because I only knew of the high fructose version and it made me nauseous every time I tried to eat it. I’ll put grade B on and in everything. It’s great in tea!

Oh man. I can’t even write a proper tasting note right now because I totally just asked out a guy that I met yesterday, and am pretty much freaking out about it… (Mostly that he won’t respond… but also that he will…. gah!!) This is new territory for me…

So, uh, anyhow…. I really think I should have stuck to a rooibos/herbal tonight since I’m already really wound up, but I had brought this tea and my sample of Bailin Gong Fu Black downstairs on Friday night to try, but didn’t get around to it, and really wanted to experience the chocolatiness that everyone else has been! Thank you to Teavivre for the opportunity to taste and review this tea!

I used 5 pearls in my infuser, and the temperature probably wasn’t as close to boiling as it should have been, but oh well. The aroma when I cut open the packet was incredibly chocolatey and delicious – kind of crazy (hey, matches my mood!)

The tea tastes malty and chocolatey, perhaps a little less chocolatey than expected, but still quite good. I’m getting almost a yeasty-ish, bready note that I don’t remember finding quite as strong in Verdant’s chocolatey blacks, but it’s not bothersome. The tea is a little weak though, in my opinion, and I’m not sure if that’s because I should have steeped it longer (I went with three minutes), used more pearls, or because I added a bit of cold water after it was done steeping to cool it down a bit so I could drink it sooner (I should say here that I steeped it in less than 8 oz. water to begin with by accident, and the addition wouldn’t have put it over that). I’d be very curious to compare it directly to the Laoshan Black, but I only have a cup’s worth of that one left and don’t want to waste it on a night of comparisons.

… (I so don’t even know what to do with myself right now!)

ETA: This tea held up to a second infusion quite well! Still chocolatey and pleasing. I’m not sure how long I steeped it, but it could have been slightly too long, as there’s a bit of astringency. Still good though.

ETA again: Third infusion, a couple(?) days later, still has enough flavour to be enjoyable, although I do admit I steeped it in a smaller volume of water. I can’t recall now if I went for 3 or 4 minutes, but there’s no astringency this time, just maltiness with flourishes of cocoa every now and again. Really quite pleasant. This tea has definitely made the short-list for teas to buy when my stash is a bit smaller! (And I haven’t checked the price, but I think it is affordable?)

Indigobloom

aw boo! oh well it’s better to know than not :)

Bonnie

His loss!

TeaBrat

Boooooo!

Scott B

I use 6 pearls of this in an 8-10 ounce cup. Teavivre recommends 3-4, but I don’t think that is enough.
I like to put the pearls straight into the bottom of my glass cup to watch them unfurl, then pour the tea through the strainer into another cup for drinking.

Missy

aww I was going to wish you good luck until I read all the comments. Better luck next time. :D

Kittenna

Thanks for the support, guys :D He was just too damn perfect, I knew I didn’t stand a chance!

@Scott – I will try 6 pearls next time (I assume I have that many left). It seems that I only found the first infusion a touch weak though, so we’ll see what sort of difference one more pearl makes!

Lucy

Aww Krystaleyn – no one is perfect. And never think someone is better than you, as they might then start believing it themselves and then you won’t stand a chance. You are a strong, beautiful woman who deserves the best. He just didn’t know what he was missing out on.. or maybe it was just bad timing. Either way, ever beat yourself up about it. You were so brave! Way more than I have ever been. I am so proud of you tea buddy! :D

Kittenna

Oh… he is so perfect though! (I am hoping to find fault with him soon so my heart will be free again, hahahaha!) He was incredibly nice and honest about everything… yeah. I’m glad I tried :) Even though I feel like an idiot :D

CHAroma

His fault is that he has terrible taste in women. ;)

Bonnie

Just look at him and think…ASPARAGAS!
I would have taken all the pearls and OD’s on all of them at once after that! Death by chocolate tea pearls! Drowning…

Listen, my ex-husband was gorgeous…when we married…women used to come up to me and ask me how I got him. Flirt in front of me and come right up and get in between… Disgusting! (He always just smiled…he had been a football star!) When he had a heart attack, I was there. I cared for him. When I got sick, he dumped me! Give me an average guy who loves me and not just himself any day!

Kittenna

Ahaha, seriously guys, he is so ridiculously nice (I’m trying to make that into a fault… who wants to date a guy and always be the meaner one of the two?!) He actually let me down very easily, and just said that he hadn’t felt a “spark”, but thinks it would be fun to hang out. The girl that lands him is going to be very lucky.

Bonnie – had I still been drinking the pearls when I got his message, I probably would have drank them a little crazily :P Your ex-husband sounds like a jerk… pretty sure wedding vows include ‘in sickness and in health’. :(

Stoo

Good luck, Kitenna. You sound very nice yourself. The right guy will find you (or vice versa). Hang in there.

Kittenna

Thanks Stoo :) Hoping for the best!!

I was out and about, running errands and stopped in at Happy Luckys to meet up with tea guru Eric (who works at Happy Lucky’s) to taste some Pu-erh that I received from a Steepster friend. That review will be on my blog in a few days and is remarkable!

When we finished our Puerh tasting, I still wanted some tea! Our little delicate cups of gentle Shu were wonderful but now it was time to pour the big lady serious tea and get down and dirty.

I was sitting at the bar.
I wanted a pot of Lucky Tea House’s finest black tea. Now.
Sam looked at Eric and said under his breath, “How about the Kenyan Ajiri?…no, no, it’s too strong…well…maybe she would like it, she likes strong tea. What do you think?”
“Hum, Eric laughed, maaaybe, OK.”

Then they turned to me.
“Let’s do it guys, I’m that kind of gal, wild and crazy! Set it up!” I said.

First, Sam brought me a tin of the super-small black leaves
(they looked more like poppy seeds) which smelled salty and savory.

Then, the wet leaves which were smaller than coffee grinds were presented with a very malty, rich aroma.

Last the dark brown liquor which was very strong tasting, and I liked it! It wasn’t smoky or malty but tasted solid and a bit fruity. I sipped for awhile.

I then added some cream (I was told the tea was too strong to drink plain but found it to be smooth enough for me).
After drinking a full mug of tea, I ordered a ginger cookie to eat along with my tea. The taste of these two together was out of this world! I’m a bit of a ginger cookie, black tea lover. An addiction as a treat!

A great piece of information!
100% of the profits from the tea sales of AJIRI goes to pay for uniforms and books for orphans in Western Kenya! What a great way to
enjoy tea and help others!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

I feel deprived…I’ve never had a ginger cookie. :(
But on a good note, I have like 12lbs of Kenya tea that I have yet to indulge in, excited to dive in now! :D

BoxerMama

You’ve never had a Ginger Cookie! :O You haven’t lived! lol

Terri HarpLady

I love all things ginger, yum!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

I must research this ginger cookie you speak of… :)

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Ohhh, it’s short for a gingerbread cookie. lol…i hadn’t made that connection. Yes, I hav lived…and now I have to go buy some because tis the season, right? haha :D

BoxerMama

No no! Like a ginger snap or ginger molasses cookie! They are chewy and amazing!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

:O wheree can i find these things?!

Bonnie

Some stores carry the larger semi soft ginger cookies which are very nice. You break off a bit of cookie then drink some strong black tea (malty tea’s go well with these too) and eat and sip. This way, I don’t sweeten my tea at all but if I want to, I add cream to my tea. Some brands of boxed ginger snaps are nice and spicy. OK in a pinch.

Indigobloom

do you have a Starbucks nearby? up in Toronto, they have them in the shop and are seriously tasty!!

Whispering Pines Tea Company

No, I live in the middle fo nowhere. Haha. But I’ll definitely find some :)

Nik

Squash banana. :D

Kashyap

if you like supporting tea farmers in Kenya…and love really amazing tea…go find Royal Tea of Kenya…truly amazing…especially the Royal Golden Safari…wow

Bonnie

I’ve had other Kenyan tea’s. This one is a very strong tea for people who like super strong Irish or Scot’s Tea or Keemun, this would be one for you!

Hesper June

Hehehe, the picture you gave me with your words, Bonnie…you at the bar…tea canisters behind the bar, the boys wondering if it would be strong enough or too strong, and you…“Set ’em up, Sam!”
Its like a wonky old western film;)

Bonnie

Well, that’s my life. Sam is real though. Everyone in the shop is involved with tea and charities.

Kashyap

nice…sounds like a wonderful spot

Whispering Pines Tea Company

Ha! I finally tried Ginger Snaps and they are awesome! :D

Bonnie

Great! Spicy cookies with black tea is a favorite sin! Especially malty black tea’s.

Tommy The Toad Thanks so much for this one!

To me…this smells like semi-burnt rice, pu-erh, and tangerine.

It infuses to a medium-dark brown.

This is better than I thought it would be. The Tangerine flavors are a nice compliment but not overdone. There is some sort of burnt rice flavor in there, too. The Pu-erh isn’t overpowering either. There are even bit of cocoa powder type flavors I am picking up right at the beginning of the sip.

The more I drink this the more I am liking it. Not bad at all.

I infused it for about half the time TTT did – at about 1 minute.

Bonnie

Did you have this in a gaiwan with a little piece of the peel? I’ve only had some with no peel and it it wasn’t burnt tasting but light and delicate with a citrus scent.

TeaEqualsBliss

I used a stainless steel strainer AKA brewing basket. I had a bit of the peel, yes. Oddly – I kind of like the semi-burnt rice flavor…that might be weird…lol…

Bonnie

Not at all. In Puerto Rico the rice that sticks to the bottom of the pot is called “pegao” and is crispy and tasty and a favorite. It’s usually toasty brown and sometimes almost…but never…burned. One of the things I learned to make when I lived there.

JC

Meeeehhhh. I’m from Puerto Rico. Pegao and burnt are miles apart lol. But I’m glad you know about that Bonnie! I miss that. I think it was because of the ‘caldero’ used to make the rice is hard to make it so it doesn’t stick, after hundred of years I guess people went “Rice cracker!”. LOL

Claire

I like the semi-burnt rice flavor too! My mom’s parents were from Spain, and my grandma’s paella always had sticky-crunchy rice at the bottom of the pot. I loved that stuff.

JC

Love Paella. We have too much of our food thanks to the Spanish influence so it might be part of it. Now I’m hungry again :P

TeaEqualsBliss

OKAY…now I’m on the hunt for a solid Vegan Paella Recipe :)

Shmiracles

vegan paella! word up!

TeaEqualsBliss

I might try this one! What do you all think?
http://www.vegalicious.org/2007/05/19/vegan-paella/

JC

Sound nice! I would add some mushrooms to have something else going on. The food network one with zucchini… I’m not sure maybe it will work but I wouldn’t make it myself. Good Luck and Enjoy!

Terri HarpLady

TeaEqualsBliss: I have an awesome vegan paella recipe around here too, I’ll dig it out & send it to you.

Terri HarpLady

I’ve been wanting to try these tangerines filled with puer! I saw them on ebay, & they look interesting!

TeaEqualsBliss

Terri – that would be awesome if you could send me the recipe!!! Thanks!

Terri HarpLady

T=B – I dug around & found several, & I posted one (that I know was a favorite) over in the Discussions area on the recipe page. I’m thinking there may be another one that’s even better, & if I find it, I’ll post it too. Meanwhile, I also posted an awesome Tabbouleh recipe that I love. It’s pretty different from your usual version. Enjoy!

drank Creamy Eggnog by Butiki Teas
60 tasting notes

I’m loving this tea. I feel like the Organic Huangshan Mao Feng and the eggnog flavor work really well together. They work with each other and neither really overshadows the other. Originally, I had designed this blend to have rum, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla and was going to add a lot to it but after trying just the base and our flavoring mixture it seemed perfect and I didn’t want to change anything. This tea might not look so fancy but to me it’s perfect. From sip to sip, I get slightly different tastes. The vegetal notes are still present but the buttery quality of the tea really adds to eggnog. The eggnog is sweet and tastes of heavy cream with an eggy quality. Some sips, I almost get a cake batter flavor. When I add a little brown crystal sugar, the tea is really creamy, rich, and very much like eggnog. Some vanilla notes become a little more pronounced and so do the egg notes and it really is so delicious that I must get every drop out of the cup. One guilty admission, I added safflower because I thought the red safflower with the green tea leaves was a little more Christmas-y.

Butiki Teas

Yay, glad you guys are excited! By the way this is the first of our holiday blends series! This one represents Christmas. Still have Hanukkah, Kwanza, Yule, and Diwali (even though that holiday is over) to go!

I pretty much hate egg nog but coming from you I’d be tempted….good thing I can probably steal a sample rom kittena lol

Sil-Do you like cake batter at all? If so, then this might work for you.

Bonnie

Sounds so good!

Sil

Do I like cake batter…. So doesn’t! Lol half the fun of baking is eating the raw batter and dough…just don’t tell my mother lol

Butiki Teas

Well then, you might like it. A sample would probably be the way to go for that one.

Butiki Teas

Thanks Bonnie! :)

TheTeaFairy

Yummm, your description makes this new tea sound so decadent!

Butiki Teas

Thanks TheTeaFairy! :)

gmathis

I’ve said good things about Bigelow’s bagged eggnog elsewhere, but this sounds great, too. You used the magic words…cake batter!

Nik

Mmm…

That’s all, just mmmm… =)

Thanks for the sample Stacy! this is supertastic tasty :D
Pineapple, creamy goodness, cilantro and white tea. Oh my that is beyond heaven. At my friend’s place so can’t write much more.
I think I am in love.

CHAroma

Cilantro?! Ack!

Sil

Looking forward to trying this one

Azzrian

WHAT??? I want!

Sil

Azz – it’s the custom blend that IB had made. :)

BoxerMama

D: WANT!!!

Butiki Teas

Hmmm, maybe I should consider making this one. We will see. This was done for a special art project that I was working on but ended up losing out to another tea that is even better than this one. I had to borrow some of Indigobloom’s cilantro that I had special ordered for her mango blend and I figured I would send her the rest of this as a way of thanking her for letting me use the cilantro.

Sil

oopsy lol thanks for the correct Stacy…totally blanked that this wasn’t mango silly-antro

Sil

it sounds delicious… hint hint

mpierce87

Wow, this one sounds pretty intriguing.

Butiki Teas

Sil-Haha, well maybe. We will see. We do have a pineapple blend already but nothing with cilantro.

Sil

cough stacy…your current pineapple is also an oolong grin course i’m not sure what this one is..but you know how me and oolongs are :)

Kittenna

I want to try this too!

Indigobloom

Wow comment explosion! This is awesome hah
My sample is very generous but I’m not sure there is enough for everyone!

Indigobloom

oh and Sil, I believe it is a white blend

Butiki Teas

It is a white tea. We used the same Organic Bai Mu Dan base that is in our Cantaloupe & Cream. This one is hitting our website in the next few hours.

Sil

i’m waiting stacy… not that i’m allowed to get more tea yet..but i can pre=order for when you send my strawberry rhubarb lol!

Kittenna

Actually Sil, if you are ordering this, instead of me picking up a whole bag, would you be cool with either splitting it with me, or giving me a sample? I do suspect I’ll like it, and I’m dying to try it, but I really don’t need more tea!

Butiki Teas

Hahaha, Sil. Well, I just finished pricing it, so not I’m just coding it and it will be up pretty shortly. Probably within an hour.

Butiki Teas

er, I meant “now” not “not”.

Butiki Teas

Ok, its officially on our website. http://www.butikiteas.com/White.html Big thanks to Indigobloom who inspired us to make it publicly available.

Sil

Kittenna sure thing. Ill get back to you in our message thread when I get sorted

Indigobloom

It’s gonna be a huge hit, I cannot wait to see the rave reviews :D

I have been snowed in for four days now and it looks like we’re about to get another round of the Blizzard of Oz 2013. I am way behind on packages. I apologize for that.

In the meantime, I’m enjoying an icy stein of this coming week’s tea of the week, which I can’t tell you about until tomorrow, except to say that it’s delicious and fun and I have some and you don’t. :P

Did I mention cabin fever might be taking a slight toll on my sanity?

Sil

boooooo i wanna know naaaaoooo! lol

Southern Boy Teas

Mean of me, isn’t it? Maybe I should give you all a hint…

Sil

i like hints!

Indigobloom

hint hint hint hint!! (chanting)

Southern Boy Teas

Well, I will neither confirm nor deny any guesses, but feel free to guess away; if you’re wrong it still might be an idea worth pursuing in the future. HINT: It’s based on a popular cocktail.

Indigobloom

Strawberry Daiquiri? oh man, please let it be so!!!

Oolong Owl

Sex on the Beach tea, yea!

Sil

i dunno…there have been a lot of strawberry blends in the recent past. I’d much rather like a lime marguerita or something…that being said i won’t guess only because i don’t enough about what frank’s had in the past lol

BoxerMama

Is it bad that I just googled “popular cocktails” because I have no life? lol

Sil

@boxermama….hell no!

Alphakitty

Oh, I hope it’s a Mai Tai tea!

Azzrian

Blue Hawaiian would be nice

BoxerMama

Bahama Mama sounds good!

Lala

May I have a peach bellini please?

Azzrian

Does it have coconut in it?
Is it a green rooibos base? (don’t think you have done one of those at least not lately)
Will it make our toes curl?

Indigobloom

LOL BoxerMama I did the same. Really hoping it isn’t Mojito… which is why I’m pulling for Daiquiri :)

Oolong Owl

ooh yeah peach bellini! my husband inserted there should be a Coconut monkey tea http://www.barnonedrinks.com/drinks/t/the-coconut-monkey-5074.html eww.

Azzrian

I call for an EARLY release!!!

CK

I second!

Kittenna

I’m going to cross my fingers that it’s NOT a caesar tea…

BoxerMama

Good Call, Kittenna !

Azzrian

Caesar tea? What would that be?

Southern Boy Teas

It’s here:

According to Bacardi:

The world’s second most popular drink was born in a collision between the United States and Spain. It happened during the Spanish-American War at the turn of the century when Teddy Roosevelt, the Rough Riders, and Americans in large numbers arrived in Cuba. One afternoon, a group of off-duty soldiers from the U.S. Signal Corps were gathered in a bar in Old Havana. Fausto Rodriguez, a young messenger, later recalled that Captain Russell came in and ordered Bacardi (Gold) rum and Coca-Cola on ice with a wedge of lime. The captain drank the concoction with such pleasure that it sparked the interest of the soldiers around him. They had the bartender prepare a round of the captain’s drink for them. The Bacardi rum and Coke was an instant hit. As it does to this day, the drink united the crowd in a spirit of fun and good fellowship. When they ordered another round, one soldier suggested that they toast ¡Por Cuba Libre! in celebration of the newly freed Cuba. The captain raised his glass and sang out the battle cry that had inspired Cuba’s victorious soldiers in the War of Independence.

Organic cola and rum flavors combine with our premium black tea base to create a sweet-tooth treat with a twist. I’m very happy with the way this came out. I’m more of a 7 and Ginger guy myself, but this is delicious. I hope you will agree.

drank 1953 Dark Brick Pu-Erh by Unknown

A gift from a friend, thank you!

Thank you to all the Veterans who are serving and have served this Country. Thank you to the families who struggle through hardship.

This may be the day that the United States honors Veterans and the day of Honor may be different in other Countries, but the message is the same. Sacrifice and Valor. We show our respect to you all.

My Father, Bill was still in his Navy Uniform when he met my mother at a Canteen for Servicemen in San Francisco.

The War was over and 6 weeks after meeting at the First Baptist Church Canteen on Mission Street, they were married! There wasn’t a day for the rest of their lives that they weren’t crazy about each other.

Dad had been a Radio Operator 1st Class. Morse Code…sometimes decoding dits and dots… 24 hours straight during a battle at places like Iwo Jima. (My father had respect for the Marines!)
My dad blinked and twitched for the rest of his life and was buried with his Navy Honors.

My Grandfather Will was 17 when he enlisted in the Spanish American War in the late 1800’s. He was injured by Gas inhalation in the Philippines. There were no benefits for that kind of injury when he got home from war.
Because he was a good carpenter for the Army, he worked on the grounds of the Vet’s home in Yountville, CA. He was allowed to live in a shack there for the rest of his life. This is where my father was raised and the Cemetary there is where my grandfather is buried.
He used to make the Vet’s caskets. Odd.

During the Vietnam era, I was with my husband at Fort Hood, Texas. We didn’t get to have base housing, and things were pretty dangerous for an interracial couple in 1969. I needed an escort to go to the PX. I was attacked and couldn’t do a thing about it.
The first year of my marriage the military told me not to go to basic training with my husband at Fort Bragg because of the KKK.
So, I went to my parents home and later had our first child like so many military wives, by myself.
My years of living on very little money and other problems wasn’t something that happened at that time to me alone. My story was easy compared to most who were truly suffering.
Military families have always had hard times. Often they must move away from family and friends. They face loneliness, injury, stress and lack of funds.
And the ultimate sacrifice, the loss of a loved one.

Thank you to our Military, Veterans and their Families!

Tea
In 1953 I was ‘5’! Amazing that I was able to drink this tea today!

I rinsed the leaves twice and steeped the tea 30 seconds each steeping in a Gaiwan.

The liquor was light champagne yellow, clear and bright.

The wet leaves had the aroma of wet bamboo, roast meat becoming lighter and sweeter with each steeping.

1. The flavor was very SAVORY! I was surprised at how much flavor there was on this first steeping. I’ve never said that a Pu-erh tastes like bamboo, slightly dry and salty sweet, but this one was. There was a little bit of green bean flavor to it, something unexpected.

2. Now the saltiness was lighter and my tongue tingled. There was some dryness in the front of my mouth with the mix of light green bean and bamboo taste. As the tea cooled it became creamier.

3. The savory quality was softened and the bamboo, sweet grass had smoothed into a ribbon of buttery creaminess that increased as the tea cooled. I could feel the tea coat my lips. The aftertaste became sugar snap pea, fresh off the plant.

I was surprised! How could this 59 year old Pu-erh give off so much flavor?!

I just can’t give anything but the best rating to a tea that has given so much to me. Where has it been? What journey has it been on all these years? And to wind up with me…well, I’m amazed and humbled!

Thank you to my friend! What an honor!

Thomas Edward(Toad)

Very nice, Lucky you :)

Helena

Thank you for sharing your story :D the military life can be rough but not just on the soldiers but on the families as well.

Invader Zim

I love military stories, although yours seems rather sad. I hope things have looked up in life for you along with this tea.

Bonnie

Everyone’s life has up’s and down’s. There isn’t anyone who’s immune. What you do with it is what counts. I love life.

JasonCT

Bonnie thanks so much for sharing this glimpse into your life! It’s so interesting to hear about your personal/familial experiences with and in the service.
Oh sounds like an interesting tea as well!

Stoo

Wow, a 1953 tea! I am of the same vintage! I’m glad to hear that it is holding up much better than I am!

I am sorry that you had to go through those injustices. Hopefully we, as a nation, have advanced beyond that today.

Bonnie

I’m of the opinion that older people should share stories. TV is impersonal. I think it’s helpful to know that life can get pretty dark and dangerous (and you have no idea how much more dark and dangerous the stories in my life are…) but you come out the other side not forgetting, but able to have a happy life. I stand for hope!

Ysaurella

thanks for sharing Bonnie, loved this review as everything you write !

TheTeaFairy

Bonnie, you should start working on your bio. Really. With such a life, we need a book!

Invader Zim

I second TheTeaFairy!

Bonnie

OK you two come help me!

Charles Thomas Draper

I think this is a new tea based on a 1953 recipe. There were many for sale on EBay

Invader Zim

I think we should invest in a recorder, sit down have some nice tea and listen to you stories!

Bonnie

Charles- Don’t know, mine was faded, crumbly (dusty) and looked more like a sheng but was a shou. Often though old and new are blended together (a common method or creating Pu-erh if people are not aware). This was a gift and I’ll look into it.

TheTeaFairy

Invader Zim, count me in!

Tea Discovery
One day, my timing was ‘just right’ when I went for tea at Happy Lucky’s. There was a line-up of tea’s and tasting going on from a new company in Denver (Nepali tea traders) and owner George was keen to carry some of their teas in the shop. But, which ones?

I took my seat at the bar and Andy placed what was left of 12 tasting sets in front of me for an opinion.

“Yes!”, I cheered internally! “I get to taste all this tea!”

I love Nepalese tea, and I picked 4 that I thought would be good for the shop to carry, which matched the tasters opinion.
Later, this Ruby Pu-er came in and when I tasted it, I said it should bump any of the other teas! An absolute must! Best of all the tea’s!

George was on the fence about it at first. Would a small town really respond well to a Pu-er like this one? (He only carried a handful of Pu-er’s in the shop) We talked about the new website which I knew would benefit from having a tea like this one and he agreed.(George is a smart man!)

Nepali Tea Traders donates all their profits to benefit the Nepali Youth Foundation and tea industry growth. (The owner’s parents worked in Nepal so there is a connection with a small area of tea farms)

Happy Luckys had a tasting at the shop which drew 45 people (a large crowd in our town), and the star of the show at that tasting and in the days to since has been this Nepal Ruby Pu-er Style Black Tea!

Taste
The flavor is warm and fruity. Cherries and brandied peaches, walnuts warmed in a skillet, wood and clover honey. All this might lead you to think of some dark and heavy tea but it’s not. The tea is light, almost like a wheat beer in color and smooth.

The second steep was sweet and buttery, a honey molasses stick of candy. No earthiness.

You’ll have to be careful not to over brew or the tea can become bitter. I added a little sugar (might add some honey next time) and the flavor was luxurious.
(If you like a little bitterness, it reminded me of some of the craft beers in town over at O’dells or New Belgium Breweries.)

Nepal is so close to Darjeeling that the tea can taste almost the same but fame has been out of reach for Nepal due to isolation and war.

Love, love, love this Pu-er style tea!

It is my understanding that this is the first Pu-er style black tea from Nepal

Indigobloom

that sounds spectacular Bonnie, I absolutely adore cherries! soon you’ll be an international tea consultant ;)

Bonnie

Hahaha! Me?! I’m laughing…like nobody needs my opinion,I don’t know why I give it in the first place except my daughter says writing on Steepster and drinking tea has really improved my health and she’s right!

tperez

Ooh man, that sounds like one I need to try :)

Bonnie

Not cheap…but they sell by the half ounce and take phone orders until the online is running.

Indigobloom

hey ya never know, and you have so many followers and people who love reading you here… don’t doubt yourself :)

Claire

This sounds really neat! When will their website be up and running?

Bonnie

look who’s talking! I’ll have to find out when the site will be up and note it here.

Azzrian

Oh dear Please PLEASE let us all know when this goes on sale! I really want some of this ! :)

Kashyap

I was very curious to learn about how the event went at Happy Lucky’s as it was not posted via FB as I will be hosting a cupping of the teas from Nepali Tea Traders at Staufs in Columbus, OH and I wanted to know how people responded and what teas were shared…love to hear about it

mrmopar

i got to call happy lucky’s

Bonnie

45 people attended the tasting…I just sent a couple pictures…and the star has been this tea. People were very excited about these tea’s. I’ve never seen that many people come in on a weeknight in the cold! This isn’t New York City! There were half ounce packets of all the tea’s available for sale after the tasting also already made up which was nice. Here’s some pictures…me with my nose to the wet leaves too. http://flic.kr/p/dPvBYZ

Kashyap

nice pics…looks like an interesting spot and glad it was a success. Great to see so much youth. The display tray is a great idea, but I have to think so close, finding subtle nuance might be difficult. Hope everyone had a great time.

Bonnie

I am so PROUD that Nepali Tea Trader’s chose this review for their kickstarter campaign! (I would have corrected my grammar had I known)
As of this comment, less than $850 is still needed for the goal of $20,000 to be met.

Sil

kickstarter? do you have the link bonnie? Happy to check it out and possibly help fund!

Bonnie

Look up their website for the link (I’m not on my computer)

Bonnie

drank Chocolate Chai by sTEAp Shoppe
676 tasting notes

500th Review…Woo Hoo! Tooting My Own Horn!

In less than a year I’ve consumed a great deal of fantastic tea! There was a little barfy tea in the mix now and then, especially in the beginning when I didn’t really know what I was doing.
Even now I screw up.
Oh go on…don’t tell me that you never make tea and forget about it?
“OH NO”…you shriek…“It’s the good stuff!” Proceeding to add water or sugar and milk to dilute your tea enough to still drink it. You WILL drink the tea if it KILLS you.

Selection of a tea for ‘Review 500’ has been difficult.
What tea would I pick? My favorite? A tea I’ve been saving for a special occasion?
Sigh…and more sigh’s.

I had just received a reblend sample of the Chocolate Chai from sTEApShoppe to try this week.
You may remember that many of us on Steepster participated in taste tests for sTEApShoppe on two Sunday afternoons, the last of which was in October.
Janet (the owner) kindly sent out samples of several tea’s and then we reviewed them at a set time here on Steepster letting her know what we thought of the tea.

But what happened after that?

Janet has been busy. She listened to what everyone had to say and has made some changes. This Chocolate Chai is one of the tea’s that I wasn’t too excited about originally. I think it’s way better
now though!

The new formulation has been warmed with fennel and the licorice has been removed. There’s lots of cocoa nib, some maple sugar and a mix of spices that gives a good bite to the Chai.
I’m not a person who would drink a Chai without adding milk because Chai is a strong brew. Milk was wonderful in this tea as expected, but the best thing was adding a little honey. OH YUM! Now that was the bomb!

Today being Thanksgiving Eve…my home is filled with the scent of yams and apples that I’ve been roasting…brown sugar and Vietnamese cinnamon. My house smells good!
Chocolate Chai with Milk and Honey…what more could I want?!

If you tasted the previous version of Chocolate Chai and said meh…give the new one a try. It’s not for the faint of heart though. This is real deal spicy Chai!
Ginger, Clove, Black Pepper, Cardamon, Cocoa nibs, Fennel, Nutmeg,
Two types of tea, Maple Sugar…oh…and all ORGANIC. (Well you know how Janet is about ORGANIC!)

I picked Janet’s tea because she’s the ‘Little Engine That Could’
and get’s that award from me. It’s not easy to kickstart a tea company by yourself.

Thank you to everyone for helping me get to review 500, for following me for selecting the like heart and making comments
that have made me feel as though I matter. You’ve kept me from true loneliness many times!

Invader Zim

drank Mango Lassi by Butiki Teas
117 tasting notes

I was born and raised in New York City, but spent enough time in India to consider both places my home. That’s one thing you should know about me. Another thing you should know about me is that mango is one of my favourite things on this planet.

So. When I was little, we used to go to India a lot during the winter, because Mum and I always had long winter holidays (she was a teacher). One year, we decided to go during the summer for whatever reason, and that was one of the most memorable visits of my life. I had never experienced a proper monsoon season before, and it was incredible! Okay, yes, it was a tad inconvenient that your clothes are never dry, no matter what, for two months; the constant dampness can feel a little icky. But the way the rain transforms the landscape, wow, it’s just beautiful. I really wanted to take some video (I was obsessed with my camcorder around that time), but there was no way for me to keep it dry, so I just have my memories.

Anyway. My uncle was really thrilled that we were there during the summer. Do you know, he exclaimed, that we have over 40 varieties of mango? And I’m going to get them for you. And he took his shopping bag and marched out of the house. He didn’t exactly return with 40 varieties, but he did find quite a few during his short expedition around our Bombay neighbourhood. There were little ones that you eat regularly, there were fibrous ones and non-fibrous ones, and there were even huge ones the size of a papaya that were so juicy that you consumed them by sticking in a straw and simply squishing the mango as you drank. And I’m sure you can guess what happened next. Yes, exactly: I ate them all.

The next morning, I was brushing my teeth and I glanced up at the mirror. I’m not given to surprised exclamations, and wasn’t even at that age, so first my eyes got wide as saucers, and then I burst out laughing, and then I ran off to find my mum. You see, I was orange. It wasn’t until years later that I learned about the science behind that in school; at the time, I was just thrilled that I was orange all over. My uncle, who has the deepest dimples you’ve ever seen and laughs like Ernie from Sesame Street, burst into his typical khee-khee-khee-khee laughter when he saw me, which only set me off again. Mum, mind you, was less than amused, and wouldn’t let me eat any more mangos.

Thus endeth my best mango story. Now I reckon we should talk about this tea, eh? =)

Monosyllabic summary: Wow.

Somehow, Butiki Teas have made a vegan rooibos blend smell and taste like mango lassi. As far as I’m concerned, Stacy is some sort of magician. The fragrance and flavour are spot-on, not just for the mango flavour, but for mango lassi. There is no chemical note to the mango, it smells and tastes like either the fruit or a candy (sometimes like one, sometimes like the other), but natural in both cases. I don’t have any complaints about this one. The only thing I want to try next time is adding a bit of milk to bring out that creaminess even more.

I only have an ounce of this, so it must have been a freebie with one of my orders, during one of Butiki Teas’ “free ounce of your choice” promotions. I must reorder it so I can guzzle this without guilt, and with the reassurance that there’s more in the cupboard.

Tea amount: 1.5 tsp/~7g
Water amount: 6oz/~175mL
Additives: 1 tsp/~4.75g Demerara sugar

Mum, by the way, liked the tea, but neither smelled nor tasted mango lassi. Considering she has sharp senses while I often feel like mine are quite dull, I don’t understand how that’s possible, but there y’go. So in spite of my enthusiasm and conviction, I have to add that your mileage may vary.

Loved the story, Nik. It reminded me of a story my grandpa told me once: he very much wanted to get into the air force in WW2, but his eyesite was bad. Someone told him carrots would help his eyes, so he proceeded to eat so many over the next few day that he turned orange. :)

Nik

Yes! lol! Oh, that cracks me up, such a sweet story.

Butiki Teas

Great story! Wow, what a compliment! :)

Serenity

I have been desperately wanting to try this tea since I heard about it just a few days ago! Great review, Nik!

Bonnie

Nik I LOVED your story!!! Please write more like this one!!! And I know about more mango’s just living for a short time in Puerto Rico where there are apple mango’s, pear mango’s, mango’s with all sorts of different flavors and sizes. Who knew?!

Nik

Thanks, everybody! Oh, Bonnie, I wish I had fun stories to share all the time like you do! But I will try and share more as I think of them. =)

Terri HarpLady

Great story, Nik!!
I also love mangos, plain, in salads with avocado, and also in a bowl, drizzled with coconut milk & crystallized ginger…yum. Now I wish I would have included some of the Mango Lassi tea in my latest Butiki Order!

JasonCT

Namaste Nik! You and Sita must be kindred spirits when it comes to mangoes. I love mango lassi as a treat when we eat Indian out. Nothing quite like the heat of India is there? I’ll have to pick some of this up for Sita to try.
Great review.

Nik

Serenity, I’m going to need to add that to my list of pies to try! The list now contains two: the mango pie and the one that started it all, Terri’s vegan chocolate one. Thanks for the link! =)

Terri, thanks! I’ve never had it drizzled with coconut milk and crystallized ginger, that sounds quite good. Jason, thanks for the kind words, hope Sita ends up liking this as much as I do.

Terri HarpLady

There’s an awesome dessert they serve at a local Thai restaurant called Halohalo, which is a bowl of sweet coconut milk with little cubes of coconut milk jello floating around, jackfruit, different kind of coconut & other mysterious, but delicious, things in it. I’ve made my own version that includes mango, young coconut flesh (after I drilled holes to drink the juice…I have a drill bit dedicated for coconuts), etc.

Then there’s that awesome mango sticky rice dessert…

Sil

Nik I love this tea cause I’m with you on it. T only disturbing thing for me is that its hot. However I did try cold brewing it and its uh not as awesome as the hot brew. So yeah. Lol

Nik

Terri, Halohalo sounds amazing, I’m definitely going to have to look that up!

Sil, you know what? Drinking fruity teas hot totally weirds me out. Every single time, I think to myself that it’s weird, what I’m doing, and that I want to try it cold-brewed or iced and see how it is. Even with the Blueberry Afternoon tea I tried recently, even though I realised that I actually liked it hot, I still had that moment where I was like hmm, this is weird. Except with Mango Lassi. I was so busy nomnomnom’ing after each sip (literally—I think I was starting to get on Mum’s nerves) that I actually didn’t even get a chance to think heeeey, nobody drinks mango lassi hot, this is weird! So that’s another huge point in this blend’s favour. :D

tea-sipper

I love the story!

Nik

Thank you!

canadianadia

Great story Nik, it makes me want to go out and buy mangoes to eat. Not so many that I turn orange, but maybe one or two…at a time. The best mangoes I’ve ever tried were in Trinidad. They were so juicy that I couldn’t eat them without it running down my arms. I’ve never had the ones that you eat with a straw, but oh yum, that sounds fantastically delicious. Thanks for sharing your story.

jordanze

Mm mango and mango lassi really are some of life’s treasures…Thank you for this wonderful story!

Ysaurella

Nik, it’s a long time now we haven’t see you on steepster, hope everything is ok and to see you back soon

Terri HarpLady

I miss Nik!
I’m gonna go over to FB & tell Nik, “we miss you”

Sil

i sent a note to Nik the other day and never heard back…guess life is busy or something

Claire

Please tell him I miss him on here too!

ETA: since I wrote this review a few months ago, I have almost gone through the 2oz I bought…Today, I lost count of all the gongfu infusions I made. I’M IN LOVE WITH THIS OOLONG!!
_________________________________________________________________________

Major backlog:

Last Thanksgiving, I won Stacy’s contest for a Gaiwan of my choice. I was super excited and chose one especially for oolongs cause it’s 8oz and it leaves plenty of room the leaves to expend. She knows how happy I was, thanks to her, I am no longer part of those whiny people who “never win anything”! I also bought from her a clear glass cup and saucer that I enjoy using almost everyday, here’s a few pics of both:

Thanks again Stacy, love the Gaiwan, excellent quality and so pretty!

Now the tea. First aged oolong for me. Tommy the Toad’s raving reviews made it impossible for me not to buy it. Thanks Tommy, this is now one of my favorite tea and has helped me relax and focus lately.

Smoky ink black lustrous nuggets, they look like magic pebbles!

The rinse is super caramel and honey sweet with a faint mineral taste. ( yeah, I can help tasting my rinse, sometimes it turns out yummy like this one and it would be such a waste to just throw it!)

1rst steep: OMG! What? Really? Ahhh. I need more, this is so potent!

Fruity, slightly woody, strong burnt caramel. I also get buttery macadamia nuts, I get coffee, there’s so much going on, wow!

There’s also a very interesting texture to it, it feels like a silk ribbon in my mouth.

The smell of the wet leaf is very pungent, an acre smokiness that doesn’t reflect in the taste being so smooth.

The 2nd steep is still honey like, but loosing a bit of its sweet intensity, leaving room for those burnt roasted notes that are trying to emerge more strongly.

What is that “je ne sais quoi” everyone is trying to describe? It reminds me of that honeycomb crunchy toffee my mom used to make out of corn syrup and baking soda. It had a strong taste of sweet burnt caramel and a mineral aftertaste that came from the baking soda, put in there for one reason: create a chemical reaction that made the preparation look like a volcano in eruption! A pan full of lava, how cool was that?

Funny, cause in my adult life, I’m not a huge fan of sugar and desserts, but I have so many vivid childhood memories related to them! Maybe some shrink could explain that?

3 tsp Gungfu style will render about 10 steeps, all better than one another. Just like Tommy says, this tea is “Liquid Love” and is good which ever way you decide to brew it!

Because it is equally as good as it makes me feel, it well deserves a 100 rating!!

Sil

happy to have you back!

TheTeaFairy

Thank you Sil! Don’t think I’ll be able to catch up with your 1200 notes, but I’ll sure try:-)

Ysaurella

nice to see you back and with a so beautiful tasting note

Butiki Teas

Welcome back! :) Oh wow, that sounds crazy scary. Good thing your intuition kicked in.

Those are some awesome pics! Would you consider entering them in our photo contest? http://www.butikiteas.com/Contest.html I’d love to post one of them on our “community” page.

I love that silk ribbon feel. I know exactly what you mean.

TheTeaFairy

Merci Ysaurella! Great to be back :-)

TheTeaFairy

Thank you Stacy, didn’t know you had a contest, I guess I missed a lot about what’s going on here! I will definitely look into it, which one would you like me to post?

Fjellrev

I am so sorry that happened to you. Some people criticize the concept of intuition but I’m with you. It’s definitely there. I’m lucky to be ultra intuitive and perceptive too.

The gaiwan is beautiful. Congrats on the win! I have been eyeing Stacy’s paisley gaiwan.

Butiki Teas

TheTeaFairy-Ooh, well I think number 4 is my favorite though I do like the others and number 3 is great too! You can certainly submit as many photos as you like.

Incendiare-I agree it is there and is so important. I’ve had some times where I’ve felt a horrible pit in my stomach and a deep sense of dread and this overwhelming feeling and I’ve listened to my intuition then but there are a few times when I’ve met a couple people where I instantly didn’t like them and felt very negative towards for no reason (and I’m the type of person that likes everyone) and not listened to my intuition and they turned out to be a really bad person. I had this when I met a good friend’s new boyfriend. He seemed really nice and was very conversational and a good listener but I felt really negative towards him. I remember having a conversation with my husband where I was convincing myself to like him. A few months later we found out that he was pretty much a horrible human.

TheTeaFairy

@Incendiare and Butiki:

Yes, we all have it inside but some of us are hypersensitive to it. Many years ago, human beings needed it for survival, but as we evolved in modern society, we don’t need it as much and for most people, it is just buried. This is fact by the way, it’s not a theory. I say this cause I’m a super sceptical person, I don’t believe in many things, especially supernatural stuff.
Stacy, what you wrote illustrates just that. Our brain is designed to catch signals by perception, we just don’t listen or pay attention to them most of the time, cause we don’t focus on that. Our mind is so busy with so many distractions, who has the time, right? But that little voice told you this man was bad news, cause his composure probably sent some signals that your brain was able to catch. I studied body language a little, and I find this stuff fascinating. I hope your friend didn’t suffer too much from this bad relationship…

As for the photos, if there are no restrictions I’ll post them all then :-)

Indigobloom

Wow so glad you are safe and that you listened to your gut!
Welcome back, you’ve been missed!

Butiki Teas

Huh, I’ve never thought about intuition from a science-y perspective. I always assumed it was more on the psychic-y front. I wonder what it was in his body language that my brain picked up. Unfortunately, she did suffer but she was able to leave the relationship immediately. A few years later, we found out that his violence had escalated towards women and he ended up killing his current girlfriend.

I would love to learn about body language a little more. I bet its a very fascinating subject.

Nope, no restrictions. Send in anything you want. :)

TheTeaFairy

What??? Holy crap, now that was a signal! I have chills… how right you were!

Butiki Teas

I don’t think the signal was as strong as some situations I’ve been in that I’ve left but I think that was because I was in no immediate danger. Its pretty creepy to know that I’ve hung out a few times with a murderer.

Fjellrev

I wonder if one can go as far as connecting intuition to introversion. People who are more introverted have sensory processing sensitivity, so they’re more sensitive to stimuli. I wouldn’t be surprised if introverts who can easily read others also have a strong intuition. I, for one, am quite introverted and my perceptiveness always freaks people out.

Stacy, that is so terrifying. I am really glad your friend got out of that relationship, but still tragic that someone else ended up being a victim instead.

Butiki Teas

Incendiare-That’s an interesting theory and it does make sense.

TheTeaFairy

incendiare, it is an interresting theory. I for one wouldn’t qualify myself to be introvert, but I am very sensitive to my surroundings at all times, I do focus a lot more on my entourage than on myself. For instance, I often feel other peoples distress before they ever mention anything. Then I get the « How did you know?» comment and a weird look sometimes:-)

Terri HarpLady

Beautiful review & I love all the comments too.
I have a sample of this, waiting to be sampled.
Drugs of choice: tea, music, food (growing, preparing, eating).
Intuition: couldn’t live without it!

TheTeaFairy

Thanks Terri! I hope you won’t be disappointed with this tea, I tend to be over the top enthusiast when I love something, that’s just who I am :-)
Wish I could grow stuff, but aside from basics such as tomatoes and parsley (cause they basically grow themselves!) I suck at it, always end up being the serial killer of my own garden!

Terri HarpLady

I used to tell my friends that giving me a houseplant was like writing it’s death warrant! That was a long time ago, & luckily I’m better with plants than I used to be! Not all of my gardening experiments are successful, but years of gardening have helped :)
I love walking out my back door to see what I’m eating today!

Chelle

Thanks for sharing your story. Your gaiwan is gorgeous. And I too do not have a green thumb except when its covered with matcha!

TheTeaFairy

@Terri: I won’t give up then :-) Must be awesome to go grocery shopping in your back yard everyday!
@Chelle: Matcha green thumb, hilarious :-)

Doug F

This is also one of my favorite teas. It’s hard to find a good aged oolong.

TheTeaFairy

I’m with you Doug, this was my first aged oolong, but I have tried a few since then, and none have provided me with the same level of enjoyment! Having said that, 1991 Da Ye Aged Oolong is my second favourite and is ALSO from Butiki. I just sampled it, it’s really good, sweeter, but I prefer my 2003.

Doug F

Thanks for the tip! I’ll try the 1991 in my next order.

So, pretty much Sil (and Stacy!) are awesome, because I get to try “Sil’s version” of this tea, which is just chocolate orange assam.

This tea pretty much smells like a dark chocolate Terry’s Chocolate Orange. Absolutely perfect. However, teas don’t always taste as they smell, and chocolate orange seems to be a particularly difficult flavour. This one though?? OMG OMG OMG!!! This is by FAR the best chocolate orange tea I’ve had. It tastes like a liquid chocolate orange. There is even sweetness in this… not that it’s a sweet tea, but there is a sweetness to it. Ahh. It’s like orange hot chocolate minus the calories.

I kind of regret drinking this without my boyfriend around – maybe this tea he would have liked?

Anyways… I really think that this should become a new tea on the website… this is amazing. It would be getting a rating of 95+ from me, but I can’t do that here because my rating here is for the real version of this tea, which has a different base, and marshmallow. This is my perfect Orange Chocolate tea, no question. Thanks so much for sharing, Sil!

ETA: Second infusion is less chocolatey, but still has delicious orange flavour. I’m getting serious raisin notes in the aftertaste though, which kind of doesn’t go with the whole chocolate orange theme (but I love the flavour, so don’t care!) I didn’t get them in the first infusion, so they were likely masked by the flavouring then (and it’s only in the aftertaste that they are appearing now).

Preparation
Boiling 3 min, 15 sec
CrowKettle

I love chocolate oranges! This sounds like it should be a thing.

Kittenna

Very much yes. I think the original blend does taste like chocolate oranges to some people, but both Sil and I were picking up on a strange flavouring/base note that was ruining the experience for us (other than that, it tasted amazing). A swap of the base, and removal of marshmallow flavouring, and it’s now perfect.

Sil

Glad this versions worked out for you lol

Kittenna

Oh man. So good.

Butiki Teas

Kittenna-I don’t think we are going to make this one available on the website but I would be happy to make you a small batch for you anytime.

Sil

Stacy….was going to ask you about doing that possibly heh

Also…caramel vanilla here I am! Lol

Terri HarpLady

This sounds yummy!!

Kittenna

How small is a small batch [I’m seriously considering this]? Also – I’m curious as to the base! I know it’s assam, but which one is it?

Butiki Teas

Kitttena-Whatever size you wanted. Its the regular Premium Taiwanese Assam.

Kittenna

I was suspecting that, since I was enjoying it so much. I shall be in touch, heh.

Sil

Kitenna – we should pick a size! :)

Terri HarpLady

hmmm, I might have to get in on this action!

Butiki Teas

Terri-Let me know if you are interested. If I make a batch for them then it would be less work to combine it.

Kittenna

Sil – I hadn’t read your comment yet, but just came on here to say that yes, we will be ordering some of this. I am pretty sure I want PTA as the base for EVERYTHING now…

Plunkybug

Sounds yummy! I am a huge chocolate orange fan.

Kittenna

SO GOOD.

The Best Tea Thing I Own.
hands down.

i love it so much i own multiples!
and they are the most beautiful things ever. http://instagram.com/p/WurPoDIc1x/

i am a sipper. and i am easily distracted. and with a timolino my tea doesn’t go to waste.
also now i can make tea for my friend when we meet at the movies.
or i can have multiple teas with me for an all night hangout with friends.
it’s just perfect.

Daisy Chubb

I was coming on Steepster to make the exact same review! I just got my Timolino a few days ago and already it’s perfection.

Ellyn

LADIES: I WANT ONE SO BADLY!

ohfancythat

What would the difference be between this and a Contigo from Costco? (minus the basket for the leaves)

ohfancythat

I just got a bunch of Davidstea gift cards for my birthday so I’mm all over the idea of this

OMGsrsly

Timolinos keep your tea hot longer. Mine actually has a mesh screen instead of a basket, so I use it for long steeps (green jasmine pearls, herbal teas, some puerhs, etc) when I’m hiking. The contigos don’t make you unscrew a lid before drinking, so I find them easier when on the go.

ohfancythat

Thanks for the comparison!

Cavocorax

Not sure about the Contigo, but I like how the Timolino is leakproof.I want to put it in my purse and not worry about my kindle!

Shmiracles

omg i love my kindle too! but there is love for both in my heart. timolino meet kindle, kindle meet timolino. now double high-five all of us!

Shmiracles

i mean i love my kindle so much that i immediately went and bought my boything and my sister each one. like when you love a song so much that you want the whole world to hear it really loud so they understand!

Cavocorax

Hahah, yeah I totally understand those feels! I bought my sister a kindle for her birthday and she just… neglected it. :O Then my boyfriend bought a Kobo reader but he barely uses it either. OMG PPL IDEK.

Double high-fives!

Oh, I recently took up knitting and someday I hope to create a tardis cover for my kindle. That’d be SLICK. (and bigger on the inside)

Shmiracles

well my boyfriend neglects his too. BUT my sister uses hers enough for all 3 of us so it all balances out :) (yay english major)
the doctah + kindle cozi = just too much

OMGsrsly

I put mine in my purse with my ipad! I usually have lunch and a reusable shopping bag (for padding) in there too, so all my mugs stand upright. I have started to carry 2 in my purse and one in my hand…

Kittenna

Agreed with OMGsrsly – Timolinos have better heat retention, which is good and bad. Contigos are still pretty good though! Timolinos are also smaller (at least, I haven’t seen them in bigger sizes), and they are easier to clean – the Contigo has bits up top that are irritating. Contigo – definitely easier for on the go, and although both are leakproof, and I’ve never had a problem, I’m more concerned about the Contigo than Timolino. I’ve heard mine slowly taking in air if the vacuum got to be too much.

ohfancythat

That’s it you guys, I’m buying one this weekend!! Davidstea gift cards ftw!!

Shmiracles

one other note about timolinos…(and i feel this way about beer or wine too)…if i am going to fully appreciate and enjoy the drink i need to be able to smell the liquid as i drink. meaning it’s best to have a somewhat open top to my drinking container. (thus a travel mug with one little drinking hole or a beer bottle are not ideal. phooey).
i like that the timolino has a strainer type top so the scent of the tea can still easily reach my nose. but i also often times just twist the whole lid off so i can really get my honker in there.

ohfancythat

I didn’t end up buying one because I didn’t like the plastic basket, wouldn’t it absorb the smell of every tea you made and get dirty really quickly? It seems sort of cheaply made which made me nervous. For $30…

Ellyn

I got the pink/purple one last night! eeee! am using it right now.

Shmiracles

YAY! welcome to timolinoland Ellyn

Rob Rauschenberg

Ellyn, Where did you buy it?

Ellyn

I bought it from the david’s store in the south end of boston, Mass.

ohfancythat

So no one else finds the plastic basket thing questionable? Does it get all stainy?

Cavocorax

Whatshesaid – I found my older one has a few stains on the basket, and along the rim, but I don’t think it interferes with the taste. I didn’t take very good care of that one though – I think the stain was from leaving a full tumbler of tea in there and forgetting it but to be fair I wasn’t getting a lot of sleep at the time. Also I drank coffee in it. (Don’t do that!)

My new timolino has been taken care of much better and I don’t see any stains. But even with the old one I don’t notice that the stains impact the flavour of the next tea. Hopefully Shmiracles can clarify.

I have to second that it’s important to be able to smell the tea too! I’ve been steeping both timolinos, and then taking turns drinking out of both by pouring the tea into my little bubble cup. Lets me enjoy the tea, without it getting cold, and then I can switch back and forth too! I find I waste less tea now because I’m not dumping cold cups down the drain.

Cavocorax

I love your picture btw. I just want to grab all those timolinos and hug them. #YesThatsAStrangeThingToSay

Shmiracles

you said it Covocorax!! no more cold cups down the drain ever! and i can brew a different tea for each timoliono and just cycle through them as slowly as i want! you said it!!

(sorry but i can’t say much in regards to the brewing baskets. i’ve gotten lazy and i’m always running late and i basically only use disposable tea bags these days.)
(i’m not sure who but somebody mentioned using unflavored denture cleaner for removing stains, and it seems to have worked nicely for my one super stained one. i’m gonna try it on some of the brewing baskets later this weekend.)

ohfancythat

I still have a gift card to Davidstea so you never know. I do find them kind of small though! But I am a tea guzzler, haha

OMGsrsly

I totally advocate for the use of unflavoured denture tablets. :) It might take a few goes, but they really help loosen the stains (and smells).

keychange

Wow! Multiple timolinos so you can sip different tea throughout the day? utter and complete genius. Wow wow wow. I’ve actually been lusting after the white one, and now I feel justified in pursuing this temptation.

Josie Jade

I finally got one, keychange! I actually got the white one, and today right after I opened the box and cleaned my shiny little Timolino, I saw on Facebook that Davids now has them in 16 oz. Now I really really really want the bigger one! I figured that I’ll use the 12 oz one to make sure that I at least like it instead of mailing it to exchange it. If I like the 12 oz I’ll just buy a 16 oz. :)

keychange

Haha Josie jade, don’t you just hate buying something only to realize something else has appeared that you want even more? How much do you want to bet that within a month or so, you’ll own a 16 oz one and I’ll have it in white? hahaha! Do you think the white one will get dirty/fingerprints on it easily? I want one!

Shmiracles

16 oz?! haha oh no!
i don’t want it but i want it. i still use mine every day, in some combination or another.

looseTman

Kittenna,

Have you thought about writing a review of the Contigo? I for one would be interested in learning more about your experience with it and how it compares to the Timolino or Zojirushi. Thanks!

Hi Everyone.
I know this is not the first time I’ve reviewed this tea but I needed a good friend to comfort me tonight.
This Chai is a comfort tea, one of my special Jewels in my cupboard.

I knew that writing a review would be difficult tonight.
I’m so upset about the fires raging in Colorado. There’s a new fire in Boulder close to Steepster Chadao. There’s a big fire with 32,000 evacuations tonight in Colorado Springs where Steepster Jason works. The fire here in my County is 65% contained after burning 85,000 acres and 260 homes. There are 16 fires in all!!! Plus 5 days of heat over 100 degrees.
Please remember your fellow steepsters and the people fighting these fires. I have friends in the path of this newest fire.
(While writing this a message came across my Facebook from friends in Colorado Springs. Just one word ….evacuating!)

Review:
I can always count on this particular Chai to comfort me with a blanket of warmth from cinnamon, fennel (love it) and burdock. The additional hint of saffron is such a special treat. Who else does that?

Another thing I love is the restraint in blending clove, cardamon and peppercorn. It irritates me to no end when I take a sip of Chai and a spice bomb goes off in my mouth that tastes like a bag of mulling spice mix full strength….blech…spit it oout! You’ll never get an awful vulgar spice bomb from Verdant! This tea is smooth. Mellow. Restrained, yet with enough oomph to stand up to sweetening and cream if you want additions.
The star of the show…the best of the best…is the Laoshan Black Tea base. Cocoa, thick and juicy tea that stands on it’s own as absolutely spectacular. It’s a treat to have this incredable tea used for Chai. Did someone make a mistake? Shouldn’t Verdant have used another black tea of lesser quality? Not happening! That’s not the way Verdant operates and I’m soooo glad. I benefit! We all benefit and can enjoy the best available tea and blended tea’s without denegration of quality.

My time with this Chai (one of my Jewels) was good for me tonight, relaxing and uplifting. Comforting.

I hope you will join me in sending good thoughts if that’s what you do, or prayers if you are one who prays for the people fighting the fires here in Colorado and those who are in danger and have lost their homes.

Thanks.

Azzrian

Bonnie – positive affirmations coming your way love. Hang in there and stay safe. ((Virtual Huggs))

Bonnie

I’m ok…just all the news for weeks and the being shut in and now 2 more cities on fire. All the news is homes on fire. It’s awful! The Airforce Acadamy was just evacuated. I haven’t heard from Jason…he works there. Chadoo lives in Boulder and theres a fire there. Eeks!

Azzrian

Im glad your holding up Bonnie please keep us posted on how you are. I figure as long as you are tea logging your okay. Don’t disappear on us!

Bonnie

I won’t but I’m just upset…having a hard time doing reviews. I need to gather myself together!

Kittenna

:( I’ve been reading about the fires on news websites, and it sounds quite bad. Keep safe and keep us updated as best as possible. Hugs.

Bonnie

2 Hrs ago friends evacuated with just minutes to gather photos and leave!
They posted their pictures …so sad!

Indigobloom

Oh Bonnie, this breaks my heart! for so many reasons. All those lost houses, and the forest animals to… I’m with Kristaleyn, keep us updated!

Spoonvonstup

We’re thinking of you, Bonnie, and all of those affected by this terrible summer! Please stay safe.

Daisy Chubb

Bonnie, you are in our thoughts. And everyone in the surrounding area – I hope for their safety and strength to stick together and support eachother through the fires.

Rellybob

Does anyone know how the fires started?

Bonnie

Lightening! It’s been over 100 degrees too. This afternoon we’re expecting lightening again and the winds come up to 30-50 miles per hour. You can imagine…fire and wind. There was a beetle kill of trees in the mountains last year so that’s dead wood tinder and the monsoon season is yet to come so the forests are super dry. Everything is going up in smoke super fast. The fire by me is the biggest ever in State History. The others are new…just began.

Rellybob

Wow. How close are the fires to you? Hopefully many many miles! :(

David Duckler

Dear Bonnie, we are thinking of you here, and send all of our wishes to you and everyone affected. While there is little I can think of to make things better from Minneapolis, I do hope that you, like me, find joy and strength in tea, and in the community built around it.

Butiki Teas

Bonnie-You are in my thoughts. I hope things start getting better soon. So sorry to hear about this.

Bonnie

Thanks everyone! I’m ok really. The danger to my home is over (looks ok now), just more storms and smoke which makes me ill. It’s the others still in danger and friends, even Steepster friends in harms way. People I know being evacuated. Weeks of this type of tension behind my house, smoke like fog, lack of sleep, migraines, high heat and now new fires just made me spew here on Steepster! I have no other voice! Sorry everyone, and thanks! Hope for those fighting these blazes!

TeaBrat

I’m sorry… I hope you get some relief soon

Invader Zim

Stay safe and prayers sent to all.

Skulleigh

I hope all the fires get under control soon! So sorry that you and yours are going through this!

Joshua Smith

I’ve actually been really worried about you, but I’ll keep the others in my prayers as well. Stay safe!

Bonnie

Oh…don’t worry. I know who has my life in His hands! I care more about the others. I’m really fine. I just stress and can’t rest.

Missy

You and all those close to fires are in my thoughts. Get some rest friend. Some times relaxation exercises help me, maybe they will work for you.

TheTeaFairy

Bonnie, also sending good thoughts your way…

My goodness, this tea is taking me to heaven on a Thursday. The dry smell reminded me of creamy green oolongs, and that smell to me has a Pavlov’s Dog effect.

The taste though, the taste! First steep is at 175 degrees, water gently introduced and poured out at 20 seconds. The scent is so intoxicating – I could just breath it in all day. Luckily, I also get to taste it – so I take a sip.

So many flavours, like a silky smooth wave. Vegetal with a slight astringency that fades as the cup cools off into a buttery, savoury flavour that has me licking my lips after every sip. Honestly – I just close my eyes with each sip and drift away to a heavenly place where this tea must exist, or else I don’t want to go. I’m done my first steep and my tongue is tingling, with a lingering sweetness that has me going back for more.

The leaves are so gorgeous – vibrant green and curly, waiting for me to steep them again. (And I will, be patient leaves)

This tea is satisfying both my sweet and salty cravings (like a salted caramel would). Or, more specifically, a salted brown butter and honey glaze over fresh green beans straight from the garden. Crisp and crunchy, but juicy at the same time!

This tea is hitting me with waves of emotion – grateful to be sipping this tea that brings tears to my eyes, grateful to be surrounded by an amazing tea community, and especially grateful for all of the events of my life that lead me to this moment, here and now.

Thank you David & Verdant for this amazing offering.

EDIT: After going to heaven for the 2nd steeping, I was naughty like Bonnie and added a teeny tiny bit of honey. It was so good my eyes rolled up in the back of my head. This is the one!

EDIT again: Michael smelled it and tried a sip, all he said was “Porkchops” so, yes. The second steep has the flavours I use to make porkchops, and I totally smell and taste it now too! haha. Seasoning salt and crispy, dark butter!

Bonnie

I know, I know…amazing! Pavlovs dog…yes…it gets you! And you crave it! So bad! Then the feeling you get from it…shush! (we could sell this on a street corner in Beverly Hills!)

TeaBrat

ha – I need to get this soon!

Daisy Chubb

Oh no you’re right – I am so going to crave this one… I added a new note to the bottom on how I was naughty like Bonnie ;)

Daisy Chubb

Yes Amy – it is the bomb!

Bonnie

My order is due tomorrow. I could live with 3 tea’s in my life. Laoshan Black, Xingyang 1998 Puerh and this Laoshan White. Nothing more.

Daisy Chubb

Lovely – and your life would be full and vibrant with them in your life :)

Bonnie

Wha? Naughty? Moi? Oh yes I am!

Bonnie

You are a naughty girl…vixen DaisyChubb…we have a bevy of naughty tea vixens here I’m sure of it!

Daisy Chubb

Oh most certainly, no doubt of it!

Kittenna

Argh, I badly want this one. August. Please let there still be some left in August.

Bonnie

DaisyChubb and I are going to buy out all the stock…hahahahahaha! I’m mad…crazy…mad! Bowahahahahaha!

Daisy Chubb

O: Bonnie! I thought eet was a seecret!

Bonnie

Are you French now? Eeet Eees a Seecret…Tais-toi!

TheTeaFairy

Also love to go to heaven any day of the week!!!

Daisy Chubb

Oui! le petit chat. en francais.

Bonnie

I will be receiving some today teafairy will get a little with the Laoshan Black…Black and White!

tigress_al

So, are still talking about tea or something else……lol. I think I need to place a Verdant order based on this review alone!

TheTeaFairy

I must say I usually go to a different kind of heaven on Fridays…along with my significant other… we call it «Le Paradis»!!!

Bonnie

Ok! Enough! Poor me! Noone for years! Waaaah!

In anticipation of Butiki Teas one day sale tomorrow, I had a little photoshoot with this GORGEOUS model of a tea. Wow! I couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful tea to be my muse. Seriously.

http://www.daisychubb.com/review-cantaloupe-cream-by-butiki-teas/

I am hoarding what little I have left of this tea. Sadly I’m not in a place to order from Butiki tomorrow, so will all of you order for me? I’ll enjoy reading your amazing reviews! I always do :D

P.S. The tea is amazingly delicious. I could hardly stop drinking to write this!

Hesper June

Beautiful pics! I am so excited that this tea is waiting at the PO for me:-)
Also, your new mug is pretty.
I also wish I could rock a bob haircut like you can.

ah that is exciting! You will LOVE it, I can’t wait until you try it! lol
Thank you! The bob is definitely taking some getting used to – but I’m pretty easy going hair wise. It always tends to grow back! :D

Helena

I can’t wait to try this :)

Daniel Scott

Can hardly stop drinking it to write a review, definitely a sign of good tea!

Helena

Is that a David’s tea perfect mug? if so do you like it? they are on sale right now :)

Daisy Chubb

Indeed!

Helena, I personally LOVE the Perfect mugs! I would go get 2 more if I wasn’t so broke – I love their size and the strainer inside is the best I’ve ever had (doesn’t let any rooibos fall through, for example).

So if you’re in need of some awesome mugs, I say go for it personally! I have 2 :3

Helena

they are on sale 2 for $30 if that helps you until July 28th

Sil
