The first thing that struck me about this tea was the aroma, this might be the first Earl Grey I have sampled where you can smell the tea under the Bergamot. So often with Earl Grey I can never get a feel for the tea’s aroma because I am too busy being kicked in the face with Bergamot. The aroma is fantastic, smooth and slightly creamy, which blends well with the Bergamot’s zinginess.
The aroma matches the taste, smooth and creamy! In my opinion this is the perfect cup of Earl, mild and not overwhelming. It has been theorized by my Early Grey fanatic boyfriend that I, in fact, do not actually like Earl Grey because I don’t enjoy the intense Bergamot. Finally I found an Early Grey that I have no problem drinking a bunch of, rather than just a cup here and there. Victory for Twinnings!
Twinings is almost where my journey as a black tea lover starts,it introduces me to major black tea branches at that time. Earl was always a nice approach to black tea for me ,since it’s light and fragrant——the smell of bergamot is always delightful and energetic.
Bigelow is not so common in the city where I live, while Twinings can be seen in most large supermarkets and tea rooms. In fact I’ve never tried Bigelow before, any recommendation on this brand?
Bigelow was my first exposure to tea. I have soft spot for it. I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it if you can’t get it easily and at Twinings prices but if you stumble upon it give it a go. Twinings earl leans a little towards lemon while Bigelow is slightly more orange.
Thanks~ Speaking of orange I think this version of lady grey (http://www.amazon.com/Twinings-Lady-Grey-Tea-Bags/dp/B000MPOG0I/ref=pd_bxgy_gro_img_y) is quite lovely, with refreshingly sweet 、soft and delightful orange aroma, and tastes smooth/light.
As far as I can remember, this one is quite different from the classic blue box of Twinings lady grey, but I can’t find its page in Steepster……
This one is always a good choice for breakfast(or just after breakfast especially when you had a big meal .)I like to drink it without anything, the taste is just so good ,strong but not overwhelming ,smooth with floral-like and malty scents ,like a very tough but lovely guy.
Honestly,it is one of my major beginnings as a black tea lover long ago ,before this one I just preferred lighter teas such as Ceylon (especially when flavored with vanilla or caramel ).
When I came across this one,I just began to understand that good tea can be ultimately perfect without any additions, too much decorations may hide their beauty sometimes.
I just bought this loose leaf and used it in my cup infuser, in a large mug. one tablespoon of tea steeped 3 minutes, and found it a little weak. I had this in Europe as as I live in Canada and it tasted great, although today it is lacking. How can I make it better?

Hi all!!! I miss you all and wish I had time to keep up! I am currently both working and getting an MBA, so drinking tea is in myschedule, but writing about it is pushed back for later… :(
Just wanted to let you know that as soon as I am on break, I will be back!!!!!! :)
I had this tea in the hotel today while travelling, it was OK, but tasted delicious as I have gone for almost a week without tea and was in withdrawal mode! It was a bit astringent, but that may have been due to over-brewing since the tea was passed to me with the bag already in the cup! Will leave the numerical rating to a second tasting.
Have a good weekend everyone! Off to class…..
Aww! I miss you too!!! I can’t wait to graduate and get back to Steepster!!! All is going well, just insanely busy… To add to the craziness of it all, I got engaged!!! I hope I survive all of this insanity! :)
Last time I had this one I thought I was so over it. I said it was meh. Today I thought I would ice ice the last bag but once brewed the bergamot scent was so wonderful I never got around to ice. There is a reason this is such a popular grocery store tea. It is the standard by which I measure all other EG’s. I like Ahmad a little better as it has more Ceylon bite but this is still very enjoyable. Another Cheapster Steepster Sunday Sip Down.
I have one more bag of this. I used to drink this often and loved it. Now I am finding it kind of meh. I hate it when the classics don’t quite live up to the memory.
I’m afraid too that the more teas I try that the old favs will not be as great. I guess it’s something we all risk by trying so many new things.
My dad said he used to drink this exact tea growing up all the time – it was his favourite. Earl Grey is wonderful.
So all week the TV weather people have been preparing us for a major winter storm. Last night they cancelled church so no one would get hurt. I got up this morning and its in the low 30’s and raining. Raining? Apparently north of us will still get pounded but the bulk of the white stuff skirted around us. However, that is only part of the story.
Tonight the temperature is supposed to plummet and the wind pick up resulting in some of the coldest weather in 30 years: -50 F windchills. I remember last time. Our power went out and with the ice we had to stay put. We (me, wife, 2 kids, dog, couple cats, and a bird) all huddled in our bedroom and stayed safe. I am quietly hoping the weather folk miss the mark on the plus side on this as well… and the power stays on.
In acceptance, defiance, or whatever, I am having a toasted English muffin with blackberry jam, and mug of Earl Grey hot while I watch the rain. Kudos to Twinings for a string long enough to wrap around the cup handle. I hate it when the tag gets sucked under. For those who are in the storms path – stay safe.
Fingers crossed! I spent one of the worst Swedish winters of the past decade in my house in the country. Power failures at least once a week, the water froze almost daily… ugh. I remember being all alone (this is in the middle of the forest) in the pitch black night, -30 C, or something, and then having to crawl in under the house to thaw the water pipes with my blowdryer because the hot air gun had been misplaced.
(I still have that blowdryer, by the way, and it still saves me on a daily basis, albeit in other ways.)
I promise this is not one of those cheery, ‘Oh, it could be worse!’ comments, but I’m just so thrilled to be in Rome at the moment. I actually got a mosquito bite last night, that’s how balmy it is.
Thanks all. Steepster is giving me fits today. Just got my notices for the last 6 hours.
Anna, -30 C, that is a night on the ice planet Hoth. Protect that hairdryer, or I guess you could find a Tauntaun.
You must be almost the last remaining person to not see any of them. (one in a million lol) If you are ever so inclined start with the original – Episode IV A New Hope. Avoid The Phantom Menace unless or until you are a fan or you will likely not watch another.
First tea in a couple days. My head is pounding and I don’t want to think. This bagged tea came in a cup I was given. Not as tangy as I remember. I certainly would not turn it down but it is not living up to my remembrance. Still it is the yardstick by which to measure other EG’s.
Visited with friends today. They live a hundred miles away so we don’t see them often enough. While playing cards my friend asked if I wanted a chocolate espresso. I turned up my nose a little. He said how about some hot tea. It was this one. Of course I never turn down Earl Grey.
He had a kettle and heated the water then he got out a 16oz insulated tumbler and one bag! I asked, don’t you have a cup. He said he didn’t want me to run out. Having lost the cup argument I said – Fine. He put the bag in until the water turned lightly brown – maybe 10 seconds (and I am being generous). Took it out and started to throw it away. I yelled at him, put that back in! He looked at me like I was crazy. I tried to explain but it was obvious it did not compute. No wonder he isn’t a bigger tea fan. He is only drinking colored water. I laughed about it all the way home. Yeah, it tasted as diluted as it sounds.
The good point is your friend didn’t choice the worst tea bags, twinings Earl grey remains quite correct, you just need to train him now to the Art of tea :)
I agree. I was impressed he had this one. I was even more impressed he had an electric kettle. Next time I need to take tea – and cups – and convince him to let me do the steeping. This is still amusing me the next day.
I think I’ve either finally been spoiled by loose leaf, or this box of tea was stale. I’ve tried a couple of cups now and it tastes like dust and paper. Or maybe I’m just working in the library too much…
