Tea #8 from HHTTB2
When this is piping hot, the strawberry flavor is pretty solid. It’s not terribly artificial, and nothing outstanding, but it’s a tart strawberry flavor that’s relatively true to strawberry and refrains from being candy-like. But as the cup cools, the plastic flavor creeps in until it’s pretty much all I can think about in the sip.
Preparation
Tea #4 from Another Traveling Tea Box
This tea had a bit of a fruity smell, so I was worried that there may have been some cross contamination. Luckily, the fruitiness didn’t carry over into the taste. When hot, the flavors were all a bit muted. The mint was a bit too weak, but came out more when the tea cooled. The rooibos base was not as flavorful as I would have liked, but this was still a pretty solid cup of tea.
Preparation
Sipdown #55 (I think).
This is another one from Sil. I have a lot of teas from Sil, way more than I’ll ever get through on this sipdown extravaganza, cuz some of them are in quantities that will take awhile to polish off. Of course, she has tons of tea from me too, HAHAHA!
I’ve decided I like Cardamom in my black tea. I wouldn’t want to have it in there all the time, but I do have Cardamom in my spice drawer, & I’m thinking that although I’d probably never buy a Cardamom black tea, I’d certainly add some to my cup. I wonder how it would be in a smokey tea, maybe with some maple syrup added…
you may have one that sipdown challenge ONCE…by a single tea! but i have won the race! mwahahahahaha
I’m still working on your next box, BTW. I’m thinking I’ll put about 200 samples in it, then we’ll be even again!
Back when I was still eating grains, I used to make an awesome breakfast cereal in the crockpot overnight. It was steel cut oats, a mix of water & knudsen’s peach/apple juice (or apple juice), slices up dried apricots, & cardamom pods. In the morning I’d saute some frozen peaches in a skillet, with a little more cardamom, to add to the bowls. It was one of the favorite breakfasts in my house, topped with a little vanilla soymilk (or french vanilla soy creamer), & maybe even some toasted pecans or walnuts.
So the Cardamom in this is really reminding me of that. I really miss breakfasts like that, but I don’t miss my guts hurting. On the other hand, a bowl of warm peaches sprinkled with cardamom & a few toasted nuts is still a nice occasional treat. I like Cardamom. I don’t use it often.
This tea was decent, especially when I added a little stevia to bring out the spice. Thanks to my tea sister Sil for the generous sample!
Oh, the crockpot is great for cooking breakfast cereals! I used to set it every night before bed. There was the peach one above. I did a similar one with Diced apples, steel cut oats, apple juice, & cinnamon stick. I also made savory congee in the crock, using short grain brown rice. In the morning I’d stir in spinach or other greens, & make a savory soy sauce with garlic, ginger, etc to drizzle over it. Top with crispy onions, nuts, baked tofu, tempe, or whatever you like. I miss meals like that.
I often do your apple version (use soy milk instead of apple juice) but on the stove, will start a small batch in the crockpot before going to bed tonight!
I understand why you miss this type of comfort food, you stopped ALL grains, even gluten free?
“No” to all grains for me. Initially it was just the ones with gluten, but I’ve come to find that they all make my guts hurt, some worse than others, & they tend to give me acid reflux, which was a total surprise.
This tea is exactly what it’s name suggests. Cardamom and black tea. You can’t fault it for that.
I do enjoy cardamom, but I’m not completely sure I enjoy it this much. I am finding this tea tasty, but if I’d have to really be in the mood to want it if I had it in my cupboard.
Thanks Dexter3657. I would’ve probably never had the opportunity to try this one out if you hadn’t sent some along to me :)
Preparation
This one might not have been “your cup of tea”, but what you are saying about it is how I feel about NMTC in general. If they call it cardamom black, that’s what it is. I’ve ordered from them a couple of times and have been happy with the teas….
Tea five in the great chai quest. This one is hard for me to judge. I like if, but it’s really subtle. I know I’ve been complaining about too spicy, but I think this one isn’t spicy enough. It’s good though, nicely balanced. I think this would be good cold. Will have to try that sometime.
I received this from nxtdoor. Thank you so much. I’ve actually drank it a few times, and this never disappoints me. I’ve drank it plain, I’ve added it to a straight black, tonight I’ve added a bit of Chinese green to it. It’s really versatile and can be added to almost anything.
It’s tart, it’s juicy, it’s cherry – what more could you want. I’m sad to see this one leave my cupboard, I would order it again.
I received this in a swap from Dexter and haven’t been sure what to make of it. I brewed this up and i’ve been trying it this morning. It’s lighter than i’d prefer and there are some notes there that seem rather interesting. Overall, i think i’d need to play with this a little more to see what i can make of this. A rather interesting tea!
Another Sipdown!
I kept this from the Here’s Hoping TTB awhile back, & this evening I figured it was time to give it a try. I’d been curious about these mandarin puerhs for awhile.
Honestly, it was ok but nothing to get excited about. But still interesting to sample. I’ll try almost anything once!
Tea #46 from Another Traveling Tea Box
This one really nails gummy peachy-o flavor right on the head. Unfortunately, I’m not super huge on gummy peaches, or artificial peach flavor in general. There is no rooibos flavor here, so that’s a plus though.
Preparation
Tea #44 from Another Traveling Tea Box
Dry this smells really creamy, but not strongly of either chocolate or mint.
As always, for me, the best feature of a rooibos tea is being unable to taste the rooibos, and this one pulls that in spades. The spearmint masks it completely.
I didn’t get much in the way of chocolate, but every once in a while it would come through. It’s a sweeter chocolate flavor, and less dry cocoa power than a lot of them. It also doesn’t have any sort of chemical component.
It’s a pretty nice decaffeinated mint tea, but not something I’d order myself.
Preparation
This tea doesn’t really taste like the standard Earl Grey that I’m accustomed to, which is a shame because I would have enjoyed it more if it had. It really lacked any flavor from the bergamot and most of what I tasted was rooibos. In this case it had sort of a medicinal flavor to it that I didn’t care for. While I like rooibos, I prefer not to have it be the main flavor in my tea, so this wasn’t really a hit with me.
Preparation
Not sure you’d like it, but I found American Tea Room’s Earl Grey Rooibos to be pretty good. It’ll never taste just like regular EG I know, so I went in skeptical but was pleasantly surprised.
Traveling Tea Box C #23
Yummmmmmyyyy! I’m going to have to add New Mexico Tea company tk my tea order list. This is delicious. I cold steeped this last night before I went to bed and am having it with my after work snack/lunch. It was not bitter at all. Sweet and you can definitely taste the black berry. It taste just like the fresh fruit. How incredible! I love it! A little of this will have to stay with me and I will send the rest off sadly :( thank you Shelley_Loraine for adding this one.
Preparation
it does tend to get bitter easily if you over leaf or steep a second too long. Make sure you remember that sweet spot the first time. If you order from there, try the huckleberry too, its almost identical, but I like it just ever so slightly better.
Tea #23 from Another Traveling Tea Box
I’m mildly disappointed by this one.
The base is good! It’s brothy, mildly sweet, and vegetal. It’s my favorite part of this cup.
As for the flavorings, on one hand, I do get the pear flavor — it hits at the roof of my mouth right before I swallow — but on the other hand, it tastes like a not-quite-ripe pear. And I can’t find the plum at all. This is a tough combination to nail (pear and plum are tough flavors to get right without tasting like candy) but it still came up lacking with even that in mind.
