Yum! This is really good. I was kind of skeptical about trying it because I am sensitive about coffee products. But, since this is only coffee flavored and doesn’t actually have any coffee in it, I figured I’d be alright. I used to love coffee, especially creamy, delicious mochas … but, then I discovered that coffee is what was causing my sick at around 11 am feelings every day, so I switched to tea and I’ve never regretted that decision. But I do sometimes still miss a mocha … they’re good too. Not as good as tea, but this Mocha Matcha lets me enjoy both.
Here is my full-length review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2013/08/15/mocha-flavored-matcha-from-red-leaf-tea/
So I read a few reviews where people said they mixed matcha in cold water and so I decided to give that a try. I figured a fruity tea would probably taste best this way and since Sil gave me such a generous sample of Pineapple matcha, I figured this would be the best choice.
I used 1 tsp in a 500 mL water bottle and though this is a very juicy drink, there is also a slight saltiness and artificial quality to the drink that I don’t get when it is made in hot water. With that in mind, I probably won’t be having matcha like this again. Nonetheless, it is still fairly tasty and I am pretty sure I will be able to get through the bottle. Plus, I still have one 1/2 tsp left of this matcha to enjoy hot. Thank you Sil!!
Well after reading the discussion thread Lala posted about matcha smoothies, I caved and decided to try one for myself. I used 1/2 tsp of this matcha combined with 1/2 tsp of Madagascar Vanilla matcha (both provided by the ever so generous Sil), one frozen and VERY ripe banana, and a glass of cold 1% milk.
More than anything I am tasting the banana but there is the slightest hint of Pineapple. It is also very creamy. However, I think my venture into matcha smoothies was not particularly successful this time around. Next time, I will try with some more matcha in order to bring out the flavors. Oh well, you live and you learn.
ETA: I found the vanilla flavor right at the bottom of the cup. Hmmm…
I woke up this morning in the mood for some delicious green tea and that’s when my package from Sil caught my eye. I realized there was still some matcha I hadn’t tried. Since I didn’t have any milk, I went the fruity root and chose the Pineapple Matcha – distinctive flavoring. I was amazed because it actually smelled just like pineapple! Steeped this made for a very smooth, slightly creamy cup. I noticed matcha more in this than I noticed in the other flavored matchas I tried but I thought it blended beautifully with the pineapple flavoring. All in all, this was a delicious cup so thank you Sil for this delicious treat!
Preparation
Hahah. I love how you have so many samples and packages from people. I wonder what you’re cupboard will end up at once they all arrive!
People have been so amazing and have shared so much with me. In the past month I think my cupboard increased by about 100 teas – some from my shopping (considering I bought about 25 teas in one day that shouldn’t be a surprise) and others from swaps and packages sent to me. It has definitely been eye opening and I realized there is just so much to try.
ok, this is really good! I think matcha must go stale v fast because it seems much stronger in the foil. thanks cavocorax! :D drinking w/half&half water/milk because I am lazy & it’s easier to make this way. YUM. Smell is pinging my Kernel’s popcorn butter pecan addiction… oh jeez, I wonder if we have a Kernels local….. /o\
Sipdown!
My matcha was composed of the following:
Size : Small
Matcha Quality: Starter (Basic Grade)
Flavor: Distinctive
I have a soft spot for the pineapple flavour in life savers. It might be my favourite. Even if it’s not quite actual pineapple taste (which i LOVE), those life savers are my happy place. When i cracked open this matcha – it was like smelling an entire package of those delicious life savers. I was in my happy place. Now, I’ve shared this matcha with a few people but i haven’t yet gotten around to reviewing it. Today, i figured why the heck not!
I opted to drink this as a latte even if some part of me was a little wary about milk + pineapple. Honestly? SOOOOO Good! I think the distinctive level is the right way to go for this one, or possibly delicate. Robust would make this a little too artificial i think.
The milk actually helps to smooth out the edge of the pineapple. Each sip is like the first instant you put a life saver into your mouth. Before i knew it, i had finished up my double mug of this! Even after it was gone, i could taste it, lingering…the best part? the after taste is more like actual pineapple. I think this will likely be a reorder!

Additional notes: different recipe! I had a pineapple greek yogurt and some canned pineapple slices in the fridge. (Pineapple is the only canned fruit I can stand.) So three pineapple slices, the pineapple greek yogurt, milk and a scoop of this took a spin in the magic bullet. I didn’t know how it would turn out but it is NICE. Nice and pineappley and just the right amount of sweetness. Not as good as the “banana cream pie” version though.
Additional notes: Oh no! I threw about a cup of ice cream, a banana and milk in the magic bullet with some of this and it was so so good! This is bad because I will want to make it like this every time. I even had it with whipped cream on top like the Red Leaf picture shows. So so so good! I used up the last of one of the big bags of this, though most of it went into trades and teaboxes. Luckily, I have one big bag (30 servings) and two smaller bags (10 servings each) remaining. Creamy banana caramel goodness!
I had to grab these Caramel Matchacchinos on sale! HUGE discount! They sounded delicious anyway!
First up: hot latte
I was surprised there was already a scoop in the big bag of bright green matcha! Very handy! Little things like that make my day. :D So, I heated up about nine ounces of milk, definitely not boiling, as that would ruin the matcha. Just about warm! One scoop of matchacchino in the bottom of the mug and I slowly pour the measuring cup with warm milk with one hand while I’m whisking the matcha with a fork in the other (yes, unofficial matcha mixing, I know!) The dry matcha has a lovely sweet fragrance. The taste is amazing! It’s like a healthier cappuccino! I could have used MORE matcha flavor and less sugar in this cup. Matchaccino is different from regular matcha in that it already has sugar in it. It definitely doesn’t need more added! My cup was gone in minutes. (Whoops! ) Honestly, if tea wasn’t typically too hot to gulp, I’d probably gulp that down too! Instantly I felt energized!
Second cup: brewed like a typical tea
With this cup, I really just wanted to taste the matchaccino without milk. So I cooled the water a while and slowly poured the water in the mug while whisking with a fork. This cup may have been even better than with milk because I get to taste more of the matcha – the milk hides the flavor a bit. I really liked this cup!
Luckily, I love this stuff since I bought a bunch of pouches. It will definitely increase my milk intake too, since I normally do not drink very much milk.
Oh, I grabbed some of these pouches too, and am eagerly awaiting their arrival. Robert had said they were much lower quality matcha (and an order that someone changed their mind about) so I’m curious as to just how much lower grade this is. So happy to hear you loved it!
Stephanie – I’m glad! :D
MissB – I’m no matcha expert but the pouch I tried doesn’t seem low quality to me. It’s comparable to the almond matcha I had recently! But maybe the next pouch I open will be better or worse. I’m already close to opening the next big pouch because of tea trades!
If I remember correctly only 50% of the bags were the lower quality matcha, and they had no way to tell which were which, so they sold them all at a discount. Maybe this bag was a GOOD bag? shrug
(Backlog)
This one was from the wonderful Stephanie who stashed this in the Here’s Hoping Tea Box for me to steal:) this definitely smelled just like pina colada! The notes of it were there but the matcha over powered it. Will have to change up the ratios here. :) to be continued…
Preparation
Apparently I forgot to review this tea until the last cup as I’ve been drinking it off and on for months. So, this is a sipdown and I have mixed feelings about this matcha blend. It is quite tasty as a stand alone flavored matcha, but in comparison to the French Vanilla, it is missing something. It has the tangy notes that I associate with cheesecake, but even as a chilled latte, I would not have guessed cheesecake unless I read it on the label. I don’t think it is the flavor level itself as it was ordered as robust, but rather that it just lacks the buttery creaminess that I associate with cheesecake. I think the caramel matchaccino may have also spoiled me to some extent. While I wanted to love this one, but I am not sure it will be a reorder unfortunately.
Good to know! I’m hoping my order of this shows up tomorrow, so I can try it as well. Did you ever drink it as a smoothie?
Backlog:
This is really refreshing served as an iced latte. It’s also alright hot, but I really prefer this one chilled, and it’s also good non-latte, but, I think that the milk adds a really nice component to give it a sort of “berries and cream” kind of taste that I really enjoyed.
Here’s my full-length review: http://sororiteasisters.com/2013/07/08/berry-flavored-matcha-from-red-leaf-tea/
So the difference between this and just caramel matcha is what?!? I think it’s sugar. When I added sugar to this, it was too sweet to drink it, I had to dilute it. I add the same amount of sugar to caramel matcha and it is fine. Also, the sample they sent me with purchase was way more than I normally would add to an 8 oz cup of cold matcha latte.
It is also a little chalky. But hey, it was free sample with purchase and if you let it sit a bit, the “chalk” settles and you can enjoy this decadent drink.
I added the matcha to a travel bottle and added a little warm water and a tsp of sugar. I shook the bottle to dissolve. I then added 8 oz cold milk and shook the bottle again. Poured over ice, stuck in a straw and …. Sluurppp!
Yes, the difference is that the matchaccino is pre-sweetened and has a thickening agent added. I checked the ingredients when they first proposed it and I didn’t see anything I object to in my food, and I am pretty picky about additives. I bought three big bags of it. LOL!
And that’s the end of this one! (174) (backlog)
I have to say I was really surprised by how good this is. And I’ve sent it on to a few people for samples and everyone else loved it to.
So, if you’re curious, try it!
Sipdown!! (164)
So long raspberry and cream matcha. Definitely enjoyed this while it lasted but if I were to chose a berry to have with cream it is strawberries all the way and for that reason, this won’t be a restock but that doesn’t mean that this is delicious, especially when mixed in a chocolate smoothie. MmmmMmmm Good :)
1 tsp raspberry & Cream matcha + 1 frozen banana + 3/4 cup skim milk + 1 package Chocolate smoothie mix = 1 smooth glass of thick raspberry chocolate milk. Delicious. The raspberry is subtle but present and does a good job at toning down the sweetness of the chocolate smoothie mix. Yumm :)
So I am not very good at whisking with a fork. I have little matcha clumps all through my drink. Such sadness. Should have not been lazy and found batteries for the milk frother. Now I know.
For those wondering, matcha and yogurt are quite delicious. I went with this one because I wanted something with a distinctive flavor so I knew how prominent the matcha would taste when mixed into the yogurt. Plus, I thought the tang of the yogurt would combine well with the raspberry and I was right. It was raspberry, it was creamy, it was awesome!
Thank you :). I would certainly recommend adding some matcha the next time you have yogurt. It was like a cold latte but creamier and with a delicious yogurt tang. I imagine cheesecake matcha would probably benefit from being enjoyed this was.
This was calling to me today as it was fruity but with a hint of tang (for lack of a better word) that I associate with fresh raspberries. This was really hinting the spot until I got near the end and realized I did not mix this as well as I thought I did. Raspberries and cream was replaced by creamy grass which is no where near as pleasant.
