My co-worker got me hooked on these Oprah Chais on ice from Starbucks over the summer. They have become my staple ‘treat’ when I have a rough day. However, they cost an arm and a leg. No surprise, really. A couple days ago I decided I’d just grab the chai myself from Teavana and make it up myself, because I’m over spending over $5. on these, when all it is is the tiniest amount of chai topped up with milk and ice.

I decided to make it straight and hot today, just to see if it’s as tasty as the Starbucks one with milk and ice. Not so much. It’s actually a bit bland for chai. Perhaps I need to steep longer, though I followed the paramaters the tea came with. Cinnamon is the primary flavour here, followed up by something spicier.

I’ll be sticking to making my chai on ice with milk for this tea.

P.S. The price of this tea I found exorbitant. $13.50 for 50g. And 50g doesn’t go very far with this tea – it’s nice and heavy. It will save me money for the Starbucks drink, but I would never purchase this tea for the price just to have it as straight tea.

Starbucks usually beefs up their drinks with a hearty 3-4 pumps of simple sugar as well! You’ve been warned.

Stephanie

I can’t do the Oprah Chai cos ROOIBOS! My nemesis!

Courtney

Haha I generally go no sweetener with Starbucks, but thank you tantonino.

Stephanie the rooibos isn’t noticeable at all. I also pretty well despise rooibos. :P

Stephanie

Hmm, guess I could try it then :)

Courtney

Wouldn’t hurt! I was actually surprised when I read there was rooibos to be honest. :)

courtney – there’s a coupon in starbucks that i saw today – buy 50g of a tea in store, get 50g free… so might be worth the splurge on this in that case..

Courtney

Thanks Sil!

A few of my favourite things: animals, the ocean, science (I’m currently doing my MSc in biology), travel, all things summer, and of course – tea!

I love chatting biology, so feel free to ask me about what I study or follow my instagram @biologistcourtney!

I love black teas and this is what I’m usually drinking. I pretty well always drink my tea without anything added.

I’m also fond of herbals, oolongs, and subtly flavoured greens. Whites are also enjoyable, and I’m always looking for a replacement for my all-time favourite Butiki’s White Rhino.

Pu’erhs, rooibos (specifically red, I’m more open to green), honeybush, and matés are not my favourite. I tend to avoid them altogether unless others find them so amazing they shouldn’t be missed.

Likes:
Creaminess, toffee, cacao (true dark chocolate flavour), coconut (true coconut flavour), and rhubarb. I’m open to flavoured teas but they can’t be cloying or fake/candy like.

Dislikes:
Any smokiness at all, bergamot, flowers (rose and jasmine), hibiscus is hit and miss.
