199 Tasting Notes
MMmmmmmm, I wish this was a touch cheaper so I’d have no problem adding lots more to my cart! This was very much baked bread in the sip and peach or some other stonefruit in the after taste. So good. I got two great steeps and a third okay steep out of it. It loses a bit of the fruit after the first steep. Really good.
As it turns out, I think I quite like darjeelings. I’m going to have to start actively seeking them out now.
Flavors: Baked Bread, Peach, Stonefruits
Why didn’t I love this? I was supposed to love this!!!?!???!?!?
It was the rooibos, I think. Maybe I steeped it too long? It smelled like blueberry cake when the water first hit it, but within the couple of minutes it was steeping it began to get that sort of medicinal smell. Perhaps that influenced my impression of that taste, as well. It just tasted like weak blueberry cough drops or something like that. I didn’t even finish the cup. It’s just not for me :(
You wouldn’t be interested in swapping a variety of your Capital Teas Ltd for a large amount of this, would you?
I’m so glad Inkling was able to swap a sample of this! I had been wanting to try any of the purple teas from Butiki, but this one was particularly calling my name. Three good steeps later (and I even underleafed), I added it to my shopping list for my next Butiki order!
By the way, does anybody else have a minor panic attack when looking at the subtotal in your Butiki shopping cart knowing full well that you can’t possibly get away with spending that much on tea all at once but also knowing that you can’t possibly remove any of them from the cart because you’ll be sad (and you know you’ll inevitably end up ordering again to buy them anyway……)
People, I have a serious problem….
Oh man! I was not expecting to like this at all because of my not-so-awesome-one-time-only experience with Puerh in the past. I got it anyway because Lupicia had this as one of their half-off sale teas for this month in stores. I figured it was worth it for 10 bags at $3.75 and I’m so glad that I got it now. In the bag, there is definitely a strong fruity smell. Pineapple was my guess until I read the back and saw mango and papaya listed. Whatever…they’re all tropical :) It doesn’t smell as strongly when brewed, but it still smells wonderful. And I don’t get any earthiness or fishy smell/taste. It’s just fruits with what tastes like a black base that I’m not used to. This is a far cry from the only other puer/puerh I’ve had (which was Numi’s Emperor’s Puerh). That makes me wonder how this one stacks up in terms of the benefits puerh is supposed to have…Either way, this is so tasty that it makes me very eager to try some of Lupicia’s other puer flavors (Chocolate & Strawberry Puer…I’m looking at YOU!) and makes me think that Lupicia is coming in as my second favorite place to buy tea, with Butiki being first…for a little while longer at least :(
Flavors: Fruity, Tropical
I think my problem was that I was so not ready for it yet…I hadn’t even had many straight teas yet, let alone ones that were so earthy. All I noticed was everything that I wasn’t used to…which translated to everything I don’t like yet. If I were to have a cup of it again now, I’d probably do a lot better with it. I have Numi’s chocolate pu-erh and one other from their sampler box to try. I’ll see how that goes.
This tasted pretty similar to the Pumpkin Creme Brulee, only with more spice to it. I expected a lot more creaminess with it being a ‘milkshake’ flavor. It was good overall, but not good enough to replace the love I have for Pumpkin Creme Brulee.
Flavors: Pumpkin, Spices
While the overall flavor of this tea is really good, I get a little more of the base tea flavor than I’d like to have going off of the name. I saw someone else mentioned that this shared some similarities to pear instead of apple, and I feel that is pretty accurate. It has that green flavor but not the sourness of green apple. Also, I am left searching for the caramel. I’m glad I got to try this one, thanks to Inkling. Now I won’t be forever wondering if I would have been happier having bought some of this before Stacy goes out of business. More money to buy new blends!!
I’m not going to rate this because I think my rating would be based too much on it not living up to my expectations of the name.
Flavors: Pear
I made this in a 12 oz cup and was able to resteep the leaves 4 times. The last time was notably different (and I let it steep for maybe 10 or 12 minutes) but still tasted very good to me. When I can get this many cups out of something, the slightly higher price of Lupicia teas certainly seems warranted. This particular one is now in my top 10 favorite teas. Bumping the rating.
Thanks to Ost for sending some of this my way. I wish I could say I like it, but I really don’t It doesn’t taste like red velvet at all to me. Maybe I steeped it too long and the rooibos got too strong? I don’t know. There something about this that is just not doing for me at all. Of the few Della Terra teas I’ve tried, I haven’t liked the majority of them. So far, it’s Grandma’s Pumpkin Pie FTW.
Grandma’s Pumpkin Pie, Chocolate Pumpkin Pie, Lemon Chiffon, Lime Chiffon, and Winter Nog are some of the very best Della Terra teas. Blueberry Crumble & Pineapple Upside Down Cake are also pretty good. They also make some great minty/chocolatey ones with black or rooibos bases (can’t recall names, and I think some are rebranded for different seasons). A lot of their other teas fall pretty flat though, tbh.
Once upon a long time ago, I did a comparison of pumpkin/pumpkin spice teas, and Della Terra won out over DavidsTea’s Pumpkin Chai, Butiki’s Pumpkin Creme Brûlée, and I believe there was another in there too, which was pretty boring.
Oh I’m so glad to have some recommendations for Della Terra teas because it really hasn’t gone well for me. I’m looking forward to trying Pineapple Upside Down Cake in a swap I’m doing soon. I unfortunately am not a fan of chocolate & mint together (I know…I’m the only person in the world that feels this way), so I’ll bypass those. I’ll be on the lookout for Lemon Chiffon and Winter Nog, though, as well as the Chocolate Pumpkin Pie. Thanks, Kittenna!
Well now……just…..what? How does tea do this? How does it taste like milk?!?!!?? I had my boyfriend smell the bag (the bag which says there is nothing else besides oolong tea leaves in there) and he looked up at me with this strange face and was like….“Why are you buying baby formula tea???”
It smells like milk and tastes like a milky green tea latte kind of deal. I rather like it! I’ve been looking forward to trying a milk oolong for quite a while now. That, of course, means that I have no idea how this holds up in comparison to other milk oolongs. I only know I’ll greatly enjoy drinking the rest of my sample packet ( and my boyfriend will too)!
ETA: I forgot to mention that I thought I’d brewed it all wrong at first. My timer went off and the “tea” still looked just like water. It is probably the lightest-colored brew I’ve seen.
Flavors: Milk
I remember reading that somewhere but this one doesn’t list flavoring as an ingredient. I’m wondering if the flavoring has to be included in the ingredients? I don’t know.
A good comparison of flavoured/unflavoured is to try the two from Teavivre, which can give you an idea of what each tastes like. If it’s really milky, it’s probably flavoured. If it’s more of a creaminess with a floral background, it could be unflavoured. I personally prefer flavoured, and don’t frankly care that they are, because I enjoy the profile, haha.
I have never had a guayusa tea before, so I’m not exactly sure how correct my impressions will be here. I really liked what I think was the base flavor here, kind of reminds me of the outdoorsy (woody? leaf pile-y?) qualities of mate or honeybush without the medicinal quality you sometimes get in rooibos. I was expecting it to have a tinge of dirt flavor when I was reading all these people saying “earth” because earthy to me means dirt—-not exactly in a bad way. The vanilla was light and creamy here, and the mint was more of an afterthought that made it seem refreshing.
I would choose this tea on a lazy weekend morning as opposed to a busy weekday. This feels like the kind of thing to wake up your mind (to chat with friends, read a book, etc.) but didn’t make my body necessarily feel energized. I’m expecting that the Blackberry Lime flavor of Butiki’s guayusa will go more in that direction.
Flavors: Cream, Mint, Vanilla
I’ve never tried this, but am tempted when I read comments that it tastes of cream mint and vanilla. What scares me are the comparisons to wood, leaf-piles and earth / dirt! Those flavours never sound good to me!
That’s what I was afraid of, as well. The little bit of base flavor I found was really pleasant. I’d be happy to send you some if you’d like to try it!
Thank you, that is very kind of you! It’s ok tho, I am in Canada, and I know postage to send to and fro is pretty pricey! Thank you tho!
Earthy here is definitely different from the earthy that I find in some pu’erhs (which can literally mean, dirt tasting.) I don’t mind the base, but still prefer regular tea. Blackberry lime, at least in the first infusion, is super juicy and fruity, and the earthiness is fairly masked. It’s pretty delicious.
