1113 Tasting Notes
Got a sample of this tea from a friend :)
It’s SO SALTY! :-O I just can’t get past it. However, I think the sweet flavor, if it is similar but not salty, would actually be very good! It’s super creamy and rich. I might try adding a little sugar, otherwise I won’t be able to finish this cup :P
Revisiting this one for a nice afternoon pick-me-up. Long steep time but did not get bitter. Slightly astringent but pleasantly so. Raisin notes very apparent this afternoon.
Kind of celebrating because I just let myself order the Damn Fine Holiday blend 2014! Naughty though- I should not spend money on myself this close to Christmas! I did order a 2nd tin to give as a gift to a non-Steepster tea friend though :)
I’m a big fan of rice shou, so I stocked up on this during TeaVivre’s black Friday sale without even tasting it first. Luckily it is a good one! And SO convenient. The sachets are individually wrapped!!! I’m normally not a big fan of sachets or wasted packaging in general but these are going to be SO convenient for travel. Seriously. Awesome.
I drank a sample of this tea all morning yesterday. I was off work and baking quiche and wrapping Christmas presents so I had time for a proper gongfu session for once! It was really enjoyable. One of the cleaner and smoother aged shou I’ve had the pleasure of drinking. I think I am getting more accustomed to aged flavors in puerh. I’ve been quite fond of younger shou and sheng for a while now, but older stuff is definitely starting to grow on me :)
Ooooooh! Another sample from my Tea Urchin gift from Marzipan :D
I’ve never had a sheng quite like this one before. It reminds me of Silver Needle white, sort of hay like and a little sweet, with a floral shengy vibe, and mousse-like creaminess! I keep thinking of it as flower custard :D
YUM!
I got a sample of this tea from sweet Marzipan!
It smelled wonderful…I was so excited! But like many other teas with honey flavoring, it just tastes like chemicals to me :(
I got a sealed sample pack of this tea from a new IRL tea-friend! We met on Facebook through a mutual friend who knows us both and that we are both big into tea. She happens to teach yoga classes in the same business complex my office is in! So last week I decided to try out one of her yoga classes and she gave me this tea. I gave her some random green tea samples, too. She basically only drinks green tea and her husband only drinks shou, so when they got a sheng sample free with a recent YS order they were happy to pass it along. I can’t believe I met someone IRL who had never heard of steepster but orders from YS :-O
ANYWAY, the tea is very nice! Syrupy thick liquor, nice bold flavor which is not too sweet or too bitter but has plenty of flavor. Floral overtones round it out. Lingering taste on my tongue and real nice Monday morning boosting cha qi!
Very glad I got to try it! :D
I got a Christmas present in the mail today from Marzipan! She got me a bunch of TeaUrchin Samples! SQUEE! <3
This is my first shou offering I’ve tasted from Tea Urchin. It is very nice! Smooth, with a creamy mouth feeling, and not too dark/rich. No puerh funk at all. Reminds me a little of dried dates though it isn’t a super sweet shou. Mmmm….shou.

“I got a Christmas present in the mail today from Marzipan! She got me a bunch of TeaUrchin Samples! SQUEE! <3” This is all I can see of your tasting note.
I"ve found that sometimes using a less than symbol in tasting notes breaks them. I’ve emailed jason about it before, but it’s really inconsistent and only does it sometimes. If you edit and save it again, it may work.
Oh crap, it broke my comment too. Anyway your tasting note stops displaying after the less than three heart. Less than signs sometimes, randomly break comments, tasting notes and forum posts. I’ve emailed Jason about it, but it’s really random. If you edit and save your note again, it may work.
My husband just tasted it and said “it’s not THAT bad” hahahaha
Now I added a little sugar…I think I can finish the cup now :)
They have unsalted version and then you can add salt to your taste.
You are braver than I am.
Much braver than I am.
makes chicken noises at Cheri and Marzipan heehehe :)
It just doesn’t sound good to me. I’m old enough and wise enough to just skip things that don’t interest me anymore.
Good call Cheri :)
OMG, was it like drinking ramen?
LOL! Maybe it tasted like throwing a ramen seasoning packet in a cup of hot milk :P
High old lady five!
The fact that it’s instant makes it sound more scary O.O
Is there actual “Yak Butter” in the tea?
Dehydrated yak butter, yes http://yunnansourcing.com/en/liuanandotherheicha/2576-instant-yak-butter-tea-with-black-tea-and-kang-tea-salty-flavor.html
I have this, bought it for a friend who wants to try it. Also bought a Xiaguan Tibetan Flame to make the real thing. Maybe I’ll just use the boxed stuff for yak butter flavoring and make the real tea.
