drank Earl of Anxi by Verdant Tea
1138 tasting notes

Trying another new tea today! This one intrigued me, as I haven’t ever had frankincense or saffron in a tea. I will try to accurately describe everything, although the descriptions might not be quite right as I don’t have experience with those ingredients.

So the dry smell is so intense! I get quite a bit of citrusy Bergamot, very bright. There’s also something else, definitely some floral notes, not sue if that’s the goji and jasmine, and I don’t really know what frankincense smells like, but I’m sure it’s in there!

Wet leaves are more familiar Tieguanyin, very creamy and green (haha, I wrote greamy instead of creamy and green first time I typed!). But there’s an extra note, something fruity and intriguing, mixed in. As it cools, I get a bit of the Bergamot, and then it seems kind of weird, like Earl Grey with Tieguanyin? It is intensifying slightly too I think. Interesting! Also, I steeped a tsp for 2 mins.

Now for the taste, this is spot on. I am very impressed. It is very much like Earl Grey to me, but with Tieguanyin. It’s creamy, bright, and delicious. I am not sure if there is much in the way of floral in this steep, or the frankincense, but that may be because I don’t know what it tastes like! Ooh, I got an interesting pop of an aftertaste! That could be the jasmine!

Overall, very nice. I’m not sure if I did a good job summing up what I tasted, but I like it, and that’s the main thing. :) very interesting, I love interesting teas! Excellent blend with Tieguanyin, first blend I’ve had with this tea in it! Not really sure what to rate yet, maybe need a few more cups worth to fully decide. Luckily my 7g sample will go for at least a few more :)

ETA: It’s doing a good job of making me feel uplifted. With finals and the depressing news in the States today, this is a welcome friend. Prayers out to those affected by the Connecticut shooting, sending <3 and support from Canada.

I can’t believe the terrible things that have happened this past year :( and children :( makes me feel so horrible..also puts a lot of things into perspective, a bad exam can’t even compare to something like that

Yay! I’m over halfway through finals, only 2 left, so I am treating myself to caffeinated tea today :D and my Verdant order came yesterday! Now just waiting on my brick of pu’erh from them then all Black Friday orders will be here haha.

Anyways, onto this tea! It is most definitely a Laoshan, the leaves are the nice little springy curls that I like so much. The dry smell is nice and light vegetal, reminds me of a lighter version of Laoshan Summer green, which I LOVE!

The wet leaves are more vegetal goodness. I used approximately a tsp and steeped the first steep (for my boyfriend, as he was the one who requested I get this tea haha) and second steep 25 seconds for me. I just tried a taste of his, it’s very beany! Yummy, also, the liquor is a nice white tea color, looks very refreshing.

As for taste of mine, I like this! It’s very vegetal and fresh tasting! I get a tiny bit of sweetness at the end, not a lot yet though, might have to wait for later steepings. This is unlike any other white teas I have had, granted, I have never actually tried a pure white tea, only jasmine ones and ones with fruit flavors and things. So to me, this tastes like a lighter version of the Laoshan Green, but with more of a caramel aftertaste and less of the broth-like texture that I always get with the green.

Overall, this is very nice. I’m excited to see how the next steepings go. The aftertaste is actually very interesting, the sweet makes me feel like I’ve had something sugary, but the initial taste of the tea is quite salty! Unique and awesome, thanks again Verdant!

ETA: The boyfriend also enjoyed this a lot, and is ready for more! :)

So this is my tea tonight. I am madly studying for my final tomorrow, and the boyfriend is done his til Monday, so I’m actually at my house tonight and I forgot my loose leaf steeper at his house! Gah, I also don’t have much caffeine free tea here, definitely not any loose, as the only loose that is here is my wonderful VERDANT ORDER!! And I can’t drink it yet! Booo, I will wait til this weekend.

Anyways, after my tirade above, this tea is actually pretty good. It’s fairly mild, but it’s a nice little brew. The elderflower makes for quite a sweet smell in here, and the lemon holds its own. Now I have to get back to the books.

So many people drinking lemon teas today, and I am one of them :) this is my study buddy this morning. Nice and creamy, but I must say, I’m starting to miss my caffeine this week. I am not allowing myself any until my finals are over (next Tues) as it makes my anxiety a lot worse. Sigh. At least I have delicious caffeine free teas like this one to get me through! I have been drinking this tea (tisane) all week, so I decided to add it to the site. So first to review, yay! This is another win from Della Terra :)

I should first mention that as soon as I saw that this blend was made, I didn’t even bother with a sample – I added 2 oz to my cart immediately, as I love chamomile herbal blends. The bag I received is plum full of tea! It is stuffed with the stuff! I love it!

Dry, it is entirely chamomile flowers and lavender. As the description states haha. It smells like a perfect blend of the two as well, I get a bit stronger chamomile, but the lavender is still there, that slightly soapy floral scent.

I steeped it for around 5 minutes with boiling water. Wet, the lavender smell comes out a bit more. The liquor is a lovely light yellow color.

The taste is so soothing – mostly chamomile, but the lavender shows up in the aftertaste. I find that this tea is relaxing yet helps me focus as well, maybe because it’s so calming. I’m tempted to add a bit of honey one of these times just to see what it does to the flavor, but it is so good on its own that I haven’t yet haha.

Overall, I like this tea a lot. Bear in mind, I do enjoy herbal teas, so if you are not a fan of pure herbals, this probably isn’t the tea for you. However, it is an awesome caffeine-free tea for before bed. Also, this is the third tea I own with lavender in the ingredients. I guess I like lavender? Haha :) Due to personal taste, I am rating this tea pretty high.

ETA: The lavender becomes a bit more pronounced as the tea cools, I’m noticing the soapiness a bit more tonight. Might be because it steeped for 5 minutes, it doesn’t seem as noticeable at shorter steep times. Still really good though!

Had a cup of this while studying for my exam Tues. I hate studying gahh it’s so boring :( I much prefer spending time on steepster haha and drinking tea! Sigh, oh well, it is a necessary evil.

Well, this was refreshing, I’m not sure if it helped in the focusing department, but it tasted good.

So I am having a hot matcha latte for breakfast today! It frothed up pretty good this morning, and I added it to hot milk and added a bit more hot water. I tried it with only a little sugar, but it was a bit tart, so I added a bit more, in total probably a tsp. Oh, and I used probably a bit under 3/4 of a tsp of matcha, and the flavor is perfect right now! Sweet, juicy blueberries, yum!

Matcha is growing on me a bit, I am curious to try other flavors, but I don’t know..I still enjoy regular tea leaves a bit more :P however, if Red Leaf has a sale again, I probably will have to pick up some more flavors for me hehe.

Sil

review this as part of their matcha review program and you can get 30% off an order – which is only slightly less awesome than the 40% the sales typically are.

mrs.stenhouse12

Oh I should!! Thanks for the heads up :)

Sil

Of course. Always happy to help other addicts out lol
I love my tea, but there’s something to be said about kicking off every morning with a cold matcha smoothie for breakfast/energy for the morning. Plus sticking everything in a blender means i don’t have to actually whisk anything haha

mrs.stenhouse12

Haha yeah it sounds like an awesome way to start the day! I’m still new to matcha, and am keeping an eye on how the caffeine in it affects me as I’m a bit sensitive, so I don’t know if it will become a daily habit, but I do like it for a change, and I imagine if I try more kinds, I will want it more often too! Haha, as if I need more tea :P I’ll definitely have to try it in a smoothie, it sounds delicious that way.

Sil

Frozen banana because I like the texture and thickness it brings, two cups of milk (I have a 24oz bottle I drop it into), 1-2tsp of random matcha, blend…and then I usually throw in some ice so it’ll stay cold a bit longer and melt and add a bit more liquid heh

mrs.stenhouse12

Mmmmm that sounds delicious! And healthy to boot :D I will have to try it out over the holidays :D

Profile

Bio

Hello all, I am an electrical engineer (read:NERD :D), who is a bit obsessed with tea! I discovered loose tea in 2011, DAVIDsTEA in 2012 and it took off from there. I really started drinking/enjoying tea because it was excellent to take to class in the morning and because I can’t handle coffee! (unless it’s a really good cappuccino or latte, or decent decaf haha)

I enjoy a variety of teas – current favorites being ripe and raw pu’erhs, chinese black teas and herbal/green rooibos blends. I also enjoy white, green, and oolong teas, although I tend to drink them more in the warmer months. I have also tried matcha and guayusa, but I don’t drink them too often as I am a bit sensitive to caffeine. As a result I don’t drink black teas as often as I used to, but in moderation I can still enjoy a wide variety of teas.

Oh, and I have a severe peanut allergy and try to avoid most other nuts, just to be safe. Limits my tea choices a bit, but that’s ok. However I have tried almonds and found out I can eat them, so I have been trying a few teas with them in them.
