pu-erh of the day. Sheng or Shou
Today I finally got at the tea from the White2Tea club, the 2009 Yiwu Raw Puerh. This was an excellent tea with only a little bit of age on it and no unpleasant aged or storage tastes. Coming from White2Tea one almost expects some wet storage taste but this had none. It had not quite lost all of it’s apricoty sweetness of it’s youth. There was initially a little bit of bitterness but after only a steep or two it got quite smooth. It had a particular flavor note that was nice but I am not sure how to describe, probably what the apricot flavors were busy changing into. It was very good. I do not know that I will buy the bing but the price is pretty good.
Yet Another mug of 0532 steeped with an infuser at a rate of about 6gm/300ml.
Today I went back to an order I put in six months ago from Tuocha Tea and had one of their ripes, the 2007 6FTM Zhong Cha Brand “Mengyi” Ripe Puerh Cake. Overall this was an excellent tea. It started out with a fair amount of fermentation flavor and a note of dark bittersweet chocolate. These notes lasted maybe four steeps. It then evolved into a nice sweet ripe with some notes of chocolate in there too. This is an excellent tea that Tuocha Tea now lists as sold out. I had not even unsealed the box it was in. I still have a number of sealed boxes full of tea from my move a couple of months ago.
A W2T blend today: generous pile of Old Reliable spiked with just a pinch of 2012 Ruiyuan Nannuo. I really needed a pick-me-up this morning, and this worked like a charm, and was quite tasty to boot.
2009 Mang-fei, YS. A generous sample from fellow steepstereese. On this first of April lets just say that this puppy is not goofing around. I used all 10 grams in 150ml gaiwan, which is well over my usual amount. Smokey, sweet, thick, camphorous finish, hint of sugar cane and cotton candy. Strong cha-qi that tweaks the eyes and expands the chest, very heady. Quick release. I can tell 10g is just too much, couldda mixed those three remaining grams with something else. Little bit of grassiness in there. Good tea that’s hit a point of perfection for young and smokey.
Today I dug through a few boxes of puerh I received months ago and came across one from Berylleb King Tea, the 2007 Bulang Mountain Chengchun Ripe Puer Tea Cake. It was fairly bittersweet at the start with a fair amount of fermentation flavor. The more I drink ripes from around ten years old the more I realize that most of them still haven’t cleared completely. This one the fermentation and the bitterness lasted three or four steeps. Initial notes of bittersweet chocolate were replaced by chocolate notes. This was overall a good tea. I do not know if Berylleb still has this one in stock or not.
WT2 Pin today. I decided to actually weigh my tea today, just to give an idea of how I often brew things, in case anyone cares. Today is 9g/100ml. Only on my second infusion (no rinse!) and this tea is already staring to rock my world. Strong pleasant aroma. Thick, lingering body. Syrupy sweetness. Great calming and centering qi. Viscous aftertaste, with aromatic bursts. Feels like it may have the energy to rough up the stomach, but so far causes no distress. Almost feels like I’m sucking on a caramel moreso than I’m drinking tea.
Not today, but last week I had 2005 YQH ‘Tsang Liu’ 6 FTM Gushu Blend that was given to me by a friend. This was a very pleasant session with playful notes (not sure if related to the blend itself or what), gentle and musky sweetness and very pleasant and lingering huigan. I also put the full notes if you want to look at that.
i had 3 kinds today, one sheng, two shous. this one is the second best shou ive ever tried!i
