This is absolutely my favourite Earl Grey. I only drink this tea with a slice of lemon, so the slight citrus taste in this doesn’t bother me at all. I find the Twinnings has done the absolute best job at blending all the flavours of Earl Grey into the smoothest, loveliest tea that you can enjoy at pretty much any time of day. I especially love this tea at night just before bed while wrapped up in the blankets. There’s a reason this tea is a classic.

This is a really nice black tea. I’m not a huge black tea drinker, but I got this as a gift and it’s a good fallback if I can’t find something else I feel like drinking.

I bought a Twinings sampler. I found the earl Grey to be good with milk and little honey. when I finish my lips felt slightly oily but the taste was pleasant enough to let that pass

Perhaps nothing special, but certainly something that is dearly loved. I adore this blend and that it is so versatile in how it can be prepared while remaining pleasurable. Nothing brings a smile to my face more than when I’m traveling and I see Twining’s English Breakfast Blend available, and personally, I order it in bulk.

I remember the first time I tasted this blend; it was Christmas Day, in what seems like a long time ago. This was my first (or second, I can’t quite remember) taste of English Breakfast tea. A very nice blend, but I prefer the Irish Breakfast’s boldness more.

Slightly less flavourful than the Twinings Irish Breakfast, but much smoother, and just overall enjoyable. Not at all bitter and a nice after-taste.

Had this again, but steeped it much longer. The result was quite similar – apparently this is not a tea I need to worry about over-steeping.

I don’t like this quite as much as Twinings earl grey, but it makes for a pleasant, unsurprising, and comforting tea. At their recommendation I added sweetener and just a touch of milk. I think it could have steeped even longer.

Eh… I’m not a fan of this one. It tastes dusty somehow, and oversteeped no matter how short the steep time. I was trying to stay awake to write, so I thought I’d give this a try (my last cup was bad, as I thought I had oversteeped it.) I don’t know… there’s an unpleasant backdrop to this tea that doesn’t work for me. It is mild, but the bitter taste comes through even with milk and sugar. I don’t think I’ll be finishing my box!

My second review for this Earl Grey and I want to take the opportunity to speak up for it. Firstly, this size tea bag is meant for 6 oz of water. If you want more tea use more bags (or import the larger Brit version). Secondly, I’ve read some reviews that stated this is “weak”. Well, Earl Grey isn’t supposed to be a strong tea, though there are versions out there that play up the bergamot a bit more. Personally I think the balance of bergamot and tea taste is perfect in the Twinings blend.
Thirdly, there is a controversy concerning the US version of this tea was weakened in 2006 when the packaging changed (the Brit version was indeed reformulated in 2011, but that’s another pot of tea entirely!) and I want to address that.

I don’t think it was changed at all. The tea was always blended in England and prior to the 2006 package change had been packed in the US. After 2006 it was packed in England and was still blended there, hardly a need to worry there. The new packaging lists the strength of the tea as “light”, whereas before no such indicator was displayed. Perhaps the power of suggestion played into peoples perception of the taste, they were told it is a light tea and tasted it as such.

It is also possible that a bad batch of tea reached our shores in 2006/07. That combined with the new “light tea” description may account for some people detecting a taste difference. An entire blog was devoted to this “change” in 2006 – savetwinings.blogspot.com , but sadly has not been updated since 2009.

Twinings denied any change in their US Earl Grey formula at the time and never have admitted to any changes to the US blend since. I believe them because you can ask any Brit who loves Twinings Earl Grey…the company isn’t exactly shy about tampering with the blend and admitting to it when they do. www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/8728913/Twinings-is-changing-Earl-Grey-man-the-barricades.html

Sorry for the rambling nature of this review but I felt this good, solid tea needed a sympathetic defense witness. lol

Nicely put Tim! Certainly there are people who’s tastes that are too demanding and tongues as sharp as knives, but I guess its their lack of admiration for this simple cuppa. These type in particular made by Twinnings is one of many teas that got me brought me to love tea before I got began to have interests in loose leaf teas and the like. Its certainly not a bad tea and quite balanced as you described, its kinda gives a best compromise of bergamont and tea flavor without one overpowering than the other or it would be like drinking air freshener! However, it can get bitter and astringent at times possibly owing a lot of disappointment among afficianados, the main upset over teas like twinnings of course its a bagged tea which has alot of bad rep due to being of poor quality or flavor. Its an overstatement to be honest, as there are some companies who do sell bagged teas that uses fannings or a combo and still puts out darn good teas!
Twinnings , Numi, Tazo, and stash continues to make good teas despite all the upset against bagged teas, its a matter of subjection as definitely loose leaf teas can also be not good as the bagged teas. Things are not perfect which some people can’t get over…

The bagged vs. loose leaf debate is interesting. There are many teas that taste better in loose form, Twinings Earl Grey oddly isn’t one of them. I have tried the loose version and found it not as strong and the bergamot not as bright compared to the bags. Perhaps I got a bad tin? I dunno.

I had this one years ago and have not been able to find it locally again. One of the best orange pekoes I’ve tried.

Again I must repeat, Twinings US tea bags are made for 6 oz cups…not the huge mugs most people use to brew tea, so if it tastes weak to you that may be the issue.

Twinings’s English Breakfast has been my favourite morning tea for ages. I always drink it with milk only and I think it’s on its best like that. I used to drink it without milk but with sugar instead back in the old days but it wasn’t nearly as good like that. English Breakfast by Twinings is classical, safe and cozy and it always makes me feel better – whether I’ve got to wake up really early or had a bad day.

Though I love good strong black teas, this one is mild but redeems itself with its wonderful sublime taste. Mellow and delicious. Drunk with milk and some sugar this is quite good.

This was my standard cuppa for a long time until I moved on to stronger stuff. ;)

Very gingery, not very strong.

To be honest, this is probably one of my least favourite teas, and about the only Twinings black tea that I don’t like. Whether it’s teabags or loose tea, whenever I’m given some of this I usually try to palm it off on someone else.

Not sure why, really, I just find it has an unappealing aftertaste. I always drink my tea black with no sugar, so perhaps this one is just better with milk and sugar (in which case, it’s not really the tea for me). I’m always mystified by how popular this tea is!
