The tried-and-true go-to tea for me. I love the body on this Earl Grey, the other ones that I have come across have either been too drying on the palette or too full. It’s a wonderful medium bodied black tea with just a slight hint of bergamont. As a consequence, I usually drink it sans sugar and cream. Perfectly balanced, and I’m never disappointed with the brew. It’s a good pick me up and always satisfies… sort of like the same way a PB&J will tide you over when you’re sick of grilled cheese.
Preparation
I’ve seen this one. What is it that makes it ‘aged’? As far as I could tell it’s just Earl Grey. Do they just call it aged because it sounds fancy, or is there actually a reason? I’m trying to figure out if I (who isn’t normally all that Earl Grey interested) might want to try it out.
“Numi’s special, organic Earl Grey is oil-free-using a unique method of aging this Italian bergamot fruit with malty Sonitpur Assam black tea.”
… it’s still somewhat vague to me, but good call on the “Aged” part of the title.
Once out of the package these look like Chestnuts. Once infused and open these are the biggest bloomed/flowers I have seen. They are glorious. There is little to no scent and very light in taste. It’s refreshing/thirst quenching but not much flavor. Still a nice cup – I had one hot and one cold. I did 2 infusions but didn’t attempt a 3rd because the first two were so light! Pros and Cons but still a neat experience.
Very light and base. Usually with overly mint-tasting things I feel a kind of acidity in my stomach, but not this time! It’s also very smooth on the palette, albeit not the best Mint tea.
In summary: Ho-hum “Pick Me Up” tea.
Preparation
Edit: This is not a full review, I have already done that many times for this tea.
Not feeling well, this is the perfect pick-me-up tea and it keeps me going. Has all the health elements of tea and does not require milk or sugar which can make symptoms of cough worse.
Put the tea bag in my travel mug and fill with hot water. Sip and enjoy. The best part about the tea is you can re-steep the tea bag, at least three times. Really helps keep me going.
Back to the heat wave on the East Coast – a quick cup of this will help me wake up and get ready for today…
Infused hot, three minutes, splash of half and half, no sugar, two ice cubes. Unfortunately, it is just TOO hot to actually drink hot tea, so I am enjoying lukewarm tea. The half and half adds the smooth and creaminess to the tea that it is otherwise missing, lightens the spices and thickens the pu-erh-esq and chocolate flavors.
Preparation
This started my day because it was easiest to grab. I must say that now that my commute has multiplied (it was 15 minutes and now is close to 55 minutes) I really find this tea refreshing in that I can let it infuse the ENTIRE time and it still taste just as delicious.
The fragrant spiced-cookie (please see other posts for more information) is so creamy, rich and delicious that it just may be necessary to get me through this commute and to work.
As always, hot, no additives, infused more than 60 minutes, drinking the whole time out of my giant travel mug.
You HOT steep this the entire time for an hour??? What is your water volume? 1 bag? Is your mug really good at keeping it hot? Do you start w/ boiling water? lol sorry- you just have me shocked:)
Hahaha! Yes! I use hot water, just below boiling, it is a 22 ounce travel mug, I fill it most of the way, use one bag. The mug really does keep it hot, so no concerns about that.
So I’m in Florida on vaca and I have to say that I’m pretty sure security went through my checked bag like twice because of all the tea in there, haha. Honestly though, I brought a full box of these (start the day off right you know?) and I my hotel is right next to a mall. And in that mall? A Tavalon store!! So you might not here from me a lot, but I will have much to post when I get back :)
See you all soon Steepsterites!
I have a question, Chocolate Puerh fans….does this have a puerh-y taste? Like earth? Or fish? Or, erm, barnyard?
No, no, and, no… it does have a lot of depth and complexity though. I’m sure this is also in part due to the chocolate. I could give you a more accurate answer if this was just a chocolate flavored pu erh, but it’s got a bunch of other stuff which takes up space in the serving size which could be used for more chocolate and pu erh.
Thanks everyone – I will have fun!
Unfortunately what my brother told me was a Tavalon (he actually just kept saying yes to me after he brought me home a tin of Menage-A-Gummies is actually a Tea Largo…they CARRY Tavalon items. No worries though, I bought plenty to rate :)
@Shanti, please see my other ratings for exactly what this tastes like, it is spiced, not spicy, a little earthy in that it is not black tea, it is slightly rough and natural, not bold or strong, and it of course chocolatey. I highly suggest having it with some milk and oversteeping (sometimes I go as long as ten minutes) and you will get fantastic results. :)
Cinoi, 10 MIN?! What’s the milk/water ratio?
TeaNerd: Not sure where Cinoi got her’s, but it can be found on their website.
@teanerd I get it at wholefoods. I haven’t found another grocery store that carries it, but as cofftea said, you can get it at numi organics website. And thank you!
Cofftea, it depends on how I’m feeling. I usually do ten ounces hot water to one tea bag. I like to infuse that 7-10 mins. If I’m making it in my 22oz pot, I will fill it with hot water and use two tea bags and infuse 5-7 minutes for normal 7-10 minutes for strong. Milk is always to taste, never more than an ounce. Usually a splash which is hard to define.
Oh ok. I don’t think that’ll work for me. I always steep mine in 6oz of water so 5min is comparable I guess. And I’ve never been a “splash of milk” type person. It took me forever to not think that even a 1:1 ratio wasn’t watery lol.
So I got two boxes of this and have been rapidly converting people to join in its wonder. I can see where people that want the strong, earthy mouthfeel of a pu-erh are disappointed, however, I think that regardless of it’s name, this is just a wonderfully flavored black tea.
Still converting followers to join me in drinking this tea, six down, many more to go…
It’s raining, it’s pouring, the cinoi is sn…wait, no I’m up and I still have plenty of tea to drink before it gets too warm to enjoy a nice hot cuppa. There is no need for a full new review, as I enjoyed one cup of this same as always, hot with no additives (see previous reviews) before work.
However, after I had this cup this morning, I was not fully satisfied with it, and insisted on getting some half-and-half to have another cup with dinner. I have never had this tea this way, and I do not know why I really wanted it this way, but it was very good.
The tea is accentuated in every way possible. The half-and-half (being half cream and half milk) was smooth, sweet and light, yet slightly savory and rich at the same time. I believe this helped to bring out all of the different flavors in this tea: I can actually pick up the orange, I still have my spiced cookie with the nutmeg and cinnamon spices, even a bit more of the chocolate, and of course the earthy richness of the black pu-erh tea itself. Adding the half and half might not be the best way to get the true experience out of this tea, but it made each and every sip slightly different than the last. Overall, still a great tea. Infused 4 minutes.
Yes, it was fantastic, ooooohhhh is really all I could say for a while, I had to get it into words somehow…haha
You know, I tried something like this with just a regular black tea. I was at my parents house and being kind of daring. They only had lipton black tea but they had this really yummy coffee creamer with caramel in it. I will get the name of it. But yeah, added a little of this in the tea and it was amazing! Added just enough to give it a totally new taste… and would definitely try again.
For some 15 (or more) years of my life, my wonderful neighbor went to Germany to visit her children for the spring months. While she was gone, we watched her home, brought in the mail and other things for her. She would always return with a box of Lebkuchen as a note of gratitude. What is Lebkuchen you ask? A wonderful German gingerbread cookie, rich and moist in texture with notes of cinnamon, nutmeg and orange.
This tea mirrors those cookies. Brewed hot with no additives. It is rich, full-bodied, earthy and sweet. It blends the same ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus flavors of the cookie, though they may not be present in the tea, it is wonderful. The spices blend in perfect harmony with a note of chocolate to deliver a naturally sweet and truly delicious treat.
Highly recommended.Preparation
OoOoOo, enjoy! It is fantastic! I have only steeped this is small doses though. 1 minute was good. 2 minutes was good. 3 minutes was good. Never more than that though (especially with the collective pu-erh fears).
In reply to your statement “It blends the same ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, citrus flavors of the cookie, though they may not be present in the tea, it is wonderful.” they actually are all there, except for the ginger.:) Really? 3 min max? That’s completely different from the way I tried it the 1st time I had it. I went the full 5 min.
Hahah! I rarely if ever read descriptions of teas, I just try them and see if I can figure out what is in it. :) Did you overpower any of the flavors? I sipped one brewed at five minutes, I thought it was too dark and lost all subtlety of the spices. I shall have to brew a full 5 mins and see!
No, not really. Then again I didn’t really want the spices other than to add to the complexities of the chocolate. It is after all, not a chocolate chai or chocolate spice pu erh. It’s a personal annoyance of mine when a tea is labeled as x flavor but then they add all these other things to it. I steeped it in 8oz last time, but tomorrow I’m going to make it even more concentrated by only steeping it in 6oz. I’m contemplating adding milk, but that may be a pu erh crime in China or something LOL:)
Haha, I’m not sure if adding milk to a pu-erh is a crime, but if it is, I’m sure adding chocolate is too!
Yeah, I’ve been thinking about that one Ricky and I’m not sure how to hand that one… I can’t bring myself to add milk to Kashmiri chais either.
For me it was a different sort of cookie, but other than that I agree with everything here. Everything. Right down to the very last period.
:D I’m rationing the rest of the bags of this, but I am going to try some varied steepings, especially the most recent one from @Cofftea, but I think honestly, my rating on this has risen to 99.
Cinoi, really the only reason this one isn’t 100 is because it has other ingredients in it besides chocolate and pu erh. Chocolate Pu Erh ice cream?
I can’t give things 100, that would mean I would never get sick of it, or ever want anything else :) And, mouth = watering at the thought of chocolate pu-erh ice cream.
100 means I not only crave it, but I get REALLY cranky when I run out. And by REALLY cranky I mean like pitch a fit and cry lol. Oh I wish I was exaggerating…
Understandable, 93 to me means scour and search to get some before impending blizzard snows you in the house with none. Then while rationing my two tea bags because none of the five stores I braved had any, I will creep the rating up because I savored them so much more. Probably going to have to do this challenge thing, I mean, two weeks of chocolate pu-erh, I can’t see any flaw in this plan.
Especially when you get 2 boxes @ 75% off plus more free… I mean free and discounted tea? OK I’m way too good at rationalizing things lol.
www.numitea.com- they also have a loose version.
Absolutely delicious. Will brew another cup later to write a proper review!
I KNOW!=P Seeing this review makes me sad cuz I don’t have anymore:( I wonder how it’d be w/ milk or a little creamer?
Aww, I’m sorry, I know, I have one bag left to try, I don’t know if I will use sugar or milk or just milk or just go plain because it was so good plain, I definitely have to get back there to get more :)
I know the feeling, I have leaked teas out of the cabinet and off of the counter and onto the kitchen table permanently…
I have a lot of little samples so I’ll be emptying my cupboard into the traveling tea box- and can do so w/o increasing the weight:)
I have been absent for about a week traveling down the east coast with my wife. We are taking our time about it. Right now I am in a Wyndham hotel in Jacksonville. They have Numi Organic Earl Grey in the room along with the usual coffee. The package says that this is Kericho Highlands Estate tea with bergamot. I decided to list it here as the package states that this is presented by Wolfgang Puck. I probably won’t see it again. This is not a bad tea, but the Numi aged is a much better tea. The bergamot is weak and this is more like a slightly flavored black tea. Its not something I would buy, but its ok for a free in-room tea. I would rate this about a 60 but i’m not going to change the rating of the Numi aged EG.
Preparation
I like this tea as the leaves are actually aged in bergamot oranges, they don’t add the oil to the leaves. I think this makes a more subtle cup of earl grey as the bergamot doesn’t seem as strong as other earl greys I have drank. This is not one of my favorite Earl Greys, but it will do in a pinch.
Preparation
I wasn’t overly keen on this tea, it had a very mild taste which you would expect from Lavender but the tea is not one of my particular favorites. I am a huge fan of anything Lavender so my quest to find the best Lavender white tea is on.
Preparation
Holy dust! I cut a bag of this open and combined it w/ Mayan Chocolate Chai (already steeped once). I’ve NEVER seen such fine baggage contents… there was something in there that looked like very tiny purple-ish grey gravel. The cocoa nibs? Anyway steeped it for 7 min in 3oz water then added 5oz Smart Balance Fat free milk. Of course, the cayenne clogged the filter on my tea pot cover so I ended up w/ a lot in my cuppa. The result was a VERY (almost too) hot but also VERY chocolatey cuppa. Yum!
Preparation
I don’t normally put 2TB of creamer in my tea or coffee, but I just couldn’t resist in indulging by putting 1TB each chocolate caramel and white caramel creamers in this. Steeped it in 4oz water then added 2oz coffee concentrate before adding the creamer. OH… MY… GOSH… This is sooo good!

I love morning thunder….must try this.
