Had this one as an iced latte with almond milk for breakfast. I got the “distinctive” flavoring option and it is VERY berry pie flavored! I don’t think I will grow tired of this flavor any time soon but it makes me eager to try more matcha flavors from Red Leaf! Yum! :)
Got my sample in the mail today and had a mug of this earlier. Just made it as a hot latte following the parameters recommended.
It’s really good.
I’m going to have to start reviewing in depth so I can get a discount in order to fund more matcha that I otherwise can’t really afford right now. Unless babies can drink matcha? Haha. I KID, obviously.
Om nom nom.
Thanks to Shakirah1984 for the sample of this!
My second matcha ever.
I really enjoyed this. I made a latte out of it. I found it perfectly the right sweetness and level of flavoring (I believe it was distinct flavor). I could taste the cheesecake and it was easily identifiable too. I could really discern the slight delicious bitterness characteristic of cream cheese!
I was skimming other matcha reviews and noticing comments suggesting that matcha is sort of like an energy drink and shouldn’t be consumed before bed but I couldn’t resist.
I could see me ordering this one day!
I think I’m a new matcha fan……
Matcha gets so much frothier when you sift it! I had no idea. Now to just get it into my routine so I don’t forget to sift half of the time despite the little sifter being right in front of me.
This is a tasty flavour, but I made the decision this afternoon that I’m not going to restock it once I’m out. I just don’t like it enough to do that. There are too many other good flavours.
I’m not having a good tasting day, I think. Everything is all muddled together when I drink it. I almost taste more matcha here than berry, despite having it before the exact same way and tasting the opposite previously. Frustrating.
Having a pretty bad day. Made this in an effort to make it better. Still not my favourite matcha but I chose it strictly because I didn’t drink it yesterday and I’m trying to be even-handed in my matcha drinking so they don’t feel left out. May have put a smidge too much matcha in this one, it’s a touch bitter.
2nd matcha of the day! I made a hot latte with 1/2 tsp of this berry matcha and added in 1/4 tsp (ish) of mint matcha. It tastes pretty good, although the mint is pretty strong in comparison to the berry, despite there being only half as much. I think I’m also going to have to start adding a bit extra sugar to any of my lattes that have mint in them because for me, it has a bit of a bite to it that seems to carry over even when I am mixing it with things. It was funny when I was scooping the matcha into this and comparing the colours. You wouldn’t think it, but these two matchas are completely different shades of green, the mint is much closer to neon and the berry is a little brown in comparison. Interesting.
So other than the disastrous peach matcha episode of a couple of weeks ago, this is the first fruity matcha I’ve tried. I was kind of concerned because it is a generic ‘berry’ flavour and not any specific type of berry, but back when I made smoothies with berries, I used to dump at least 3 different types in at a time and it always came out pretty well (unless I overdid the cranberries).
Berry matcha from Red Leaf Tea (found here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/berry-matcha.html) is definitely ‘generic berry’. Not to say that’s bad, exactly. It’s certainly not my favourite thing, I just got off of a batch of dessert-y matchas including the infamous caramel matcha so I have some matcha favourites pretty cemented already. But it is good. Not great, but good.
There’s a slight slight slight tinge of bitterness in the back of the throat as I drink this (as a hot latte) but it’s certainly easy to ignore and doesn’t detract much from the experience. I think if I were to buy this again, I’d pick the robust level of flavouring instead of the distinctive. I would stick with the classic grade matcha though. I don’t like this one enough to warrant a higher grade matcha. Although now that I’m thinking about it, I think I might enjoy this one more if it were made with black matcha. I’ve always enjoyed the interaction between black tea and berries.
I did add a bit of sweetener to this, about a half teaspoon of rock sugar to my 10 oz mug of milk, water, and matcha. Used about 2/3 teaspoon of matcha. I think I might use a full teaspoon of it next time. It will probably take a while for me to get through this small order.
Preparation
Sipdown! First time subtracting one from my cupboard in months. I liked this, but sipdowns are super necessary, especially with matcha since I have a ton of it in my freezer. This is one of my work matcha so even better. 8 left to sipdown ASAP.
Hot latte again, the rest of my stash of this, not quite a tsp of rock sugar, what was left of the milk in my little container after a couple of cups of regular tea and splashes of milk in them. I have another little half pint of milk in the fridge that I can break out if I need another one in the 2 hours before going home tonight. I’m going to make another pot of tea, but after I finish this since I need to go and get more water for my teapot, don’t dare use the tap water.
A bit much matcha, this is a tiny bit bitter. Possibly I need to increase the amount of sugar in these until I get the new matcha opened. My tastebuds are also out of the habit of tasting this so I need to get everything back up to speed now that I’m not nearly as depressed and I am enthused about things again. Like tea and matcha.
I don’t have a lot of simple sipdowns, I have quantity of most everything. I need to start trading again, but I don’t want to until the TTBB gets to me. It’s in the mail at least.
Drinking this, this afternoon! 3rd matcha of the day! Tasty as always, though I might get it with robust flavouring next time, because there definitely will be a next time. Good hot latte.
This is going down extra smooth today. Pretty much perfect.
Rachel – 2/3 tsp matcha in a mug, add a couple ounces of 175 F water and froth (I use an electric whisk). Then add a half teaspoon of sugar (I use German rock sugar) and 8-10 oz of milk of your choice (I use cow’s but I’ve heard that coconut works well too).
Drinking this my…4th matcha of the day. Good thing I’m not affected by caffeine or I’d probably be clinging to the ceiling by now. 2nd matcha in less than an hour. I’m still tired.
This is again very tasty. I think I’ll be able to decrease the amount of sugar I put in a hot latte (currently 1/2 teaspoon) very soon because it almost tastes too sweet as it is. Almost. Currently still quite delicious. I’m glad that I found Red Leaf Tea because it has opened up a whole new world of tea for me, flavoured matcha!
There are days, like today, that I wish I was affected by caffeine. Matcha has a fair amount of caffeine, 70 mg/tsp or something, according to the Red Leaf Tea website. I’m still searching for caffeine content for black matcha, but I expect it’s quite a bit higher than that. I didn’t get any sleep the night before last and I think I woke up in the middle of a REM cycle this morning because I kept having to slap myself to stay awake during my commute in. Unfortunately, while matcha is tasty first thing in the morning like today, the caffeine is not helping me wake up.
Creme Brulee Matcha (Found Here: http://www.redleaftea.com/matcha-tea/creme-brulee-matcha.html) is a nice thick custardy sweet sugar drink. I made this as a hot latte with a bit of sweetener from classic grade, distinctive level flavouring, green matcha. After having French Vanilla and Bavarian Cream matcha yesterday, I can’t say I’ll get all 3 again, probably just one of them, though I don’t know which one, but it’s nice to taste this all the same. It tastes like the custard part of the dessert, not the spun sugar top, but it’s quite nice. I haven’t had creme brulee in a while, too obsessed with chocolate things, but this is a nice reminder.
