Sipdown! Made up the last of this yesterday. Delicious as always. I’m now out of cacao, but will hold off getting some for a while, since it’s pretty readily available.

Sil

tisano! once we all need some haha

Nearly out of this now, so I probably shouldn’t have had it again, but oh well. LBCG will have to tide me through until I can reorder it. Made in a travel mug again, and just left it steeping while I drank it. Not even that annoying when bits get in your mouth, because they kinda taste good :P

Sil

get the version from tisano if you need to order cacao.

Drank a couple mugs-full of this on the weekend. Left the leaves sitting in the mug the entire time, which works just fine for this sort of tea, and it was delicious. About as close to hot chocolate as one can get without the big caloric hit.

Still like this one just as much as previously – like a sugar-free (and dairy free) hot chocolate. I accidentally left the infuser at my boyfriend’s place, though, so probably won’t get a second infusion. Sucky :(

Mmmmm, after the success of my last bag of Cacao Mint, I was craving more chocolate, so brewed up some of this (of course, I neglected to finish off the last of my original bag, which would have been a sipdown… sigh). Anyways, it was delicious as expected. Chocolatey and just a hint of sweetness, and three good infusions total.

yep…still prefer just plain ol’ cacao from HI…though HI’s customer service and communication with their customers is so awful, it’s hard to justify either. I’m actively looking for an alternative to their cacao as a result. this one is mint and chocolate but it’s watery and wimpy. so meh. even after a 15 min steep

LiberTEAS

Hey … try Tisano! I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually got their cacao from Tisano. http://tisano.com/shop/tea/cacao-tea-04oz/

VariaTEA

Perhaps the mojito or mint crio bru would be a good alternative for this one?

Sil

i’ll have to check it out – i know they’ source their shells from a local place here in toronto but maybe tisano would be better :)

Cavocorax

You know, I never heard ANYTHING from them. ZERO communication through that entire thing. I’m hoping the crio bru is a good alternative! The first sample I had was amazing, but the second cup was difficult to strain – my filter clogged right up and I couldn’t get my liquid out – ended up with half a cup instead of a full one. So, that needs work. (Aside from that, I love how chocolately it is!)

OMGsrsly

I unsubscribed from their mailing list so I wouldn’t be tempted. That is so not cool.

Sil

maybe one/some of us can try tisano and split something

SIPDOWN! Figure i might as well finish this one off today since it’s the straight cacao that i prefer. Not that I have any of that one left but hey, not to worry! Still enjoying this one and it’s nice to start my day off with a few good teas (i’m ignoring the first two i drank today). Costco trip later this afternoon once my other half is off of work. I don’t really want to go since it’s a little chillier out there today but i figure i’ll just pack some tea and get through it.

choco mint! thank you :)

Indigobloom

omg costco… I love to hate and hate to love that place. Score any bulk deals? heh

Popped this one into a mug today so see how it compares to the straight up cacao from Cha that i had earlier. I hadn’t been impressed with the vanilla one way back when, so i didn’t have high hopes for this one. Truth be told though? This is actually pretty good. I can see this being a decent enough replacement for the mint chocolate from the Persimmon Tree that i like in a pinch. I still MUCH prefer the straight cacao one though, so I will be looking to add that one to my cupboard eventually. Thanks indigobloom for sharing this one!

Indigobloom

Funny, everyone loves the pure cacao across the board. Sooooo good :P

Sil

is the pure cacao at herbal infusions, the CHA one? or does that one need to be picked up elsewhere?

Indigobloom

yep it’s there at HI. unless they are out of stock.

Sample sipdown!! yeehaw :P
Hmmm, I don’t mind this at all, for a green. I’m very picky about my green teas…
The dry leaf aroma, as Sil mentioned, is intoxicating. I wish I could have a perfume like that! Very fruity, like stewed plums. Compote anyone? Steeped, not so much, unfortunately.
No matter! The flavour is pleasant. Definitely plum like, in a natural and subtle way. With a little sugar(1/3tsp), that part emerges a bit more… moving from slightly tart, to that same stewed plum profile from the dry leaf.
The green tea part, well I like that to! It has a certain bubbly like effect on my tongue that I am getting a kick out of. That must be the guayasa!
Funny, when I first sipped, I was immediately reminded of a rather similar tea… Ume Vert, from Lupicia. But then as I got through my cup, I noticed a few differences, despite the fact that my Ume sample was gone eons ago. shrugs
So overall: Yum! I’d buy more, one day.

I love this tisane!!
Hot, it’s a cup of soothing creamy orange yummy. A little rough on my throat for an herbal, but then it IS lapacho and I figure there is no way around that.
Cooled down to room temp, it looses most of it’s punch. Maybe next time I’ll add a dash of sugar and see if that holds better, because I was so looking forward to having this iced over the summer, or as a popsicle.
So here is my rating…. Hot: 85, Cooled: 65 Overall: 75

SIPDOWN! (300 to go)

Thank you Indigobloom for sharing this on with me. The dry aroma of this is delightful! it really is a nice plum, green tea smell. When it’s brewed though, the scent becomes more green tea than anything. While drinking this, i get slight hints of the plum but nothing that really shouts out to my tastebuds. It’s a pleasant enough green tea but nothing to write home about on the plum side.

Whoops, missed logging this sipdown! 817.

Definitely tastes like mint hot chocolate, but my previous opinion stands that too much of the cacao deliciousness is overwhelmed by the mint, which makes it not much better than a mint rooibos/honeybush or mint chocolate black, except that it’s technically a herbal with no funky flavour (though in my experience, mint chocolate HB is usually free from weird flavours).

ETA: I retract my earlier statement. This is now my preferred way of consuming a mint chocolate beverage. Yum.

Fairly tasty chocolate mint tea, pretty much like mint hot chocolate. Yummers. The mint, however, covers up some of the chocolate goodness, so it’s not as obviously a better chocolate flavour than… chocolate flavour in other mint chocolate blends, so I’d be torn as to whether I’d want something like this when I could have a more easily obtainable mint chocolate rooibos. That said, there is definitely no funky rooibos flavour, which is a plus. I suppose, however, that this may not be caffeine-free, since chocolate does contain caffeine?

Thanks for letting me sample this one as well, Indigobloom!

Kittenna

Cool! Not that it matters particularly to me, but it might to someone else!

Indigobloom

It does to me, I can never sleep after a caffeinated cuppa. Plus it’s lighter so takes up less weight in my travel case (yes, this is going on vacation with me, when I go haha)

Sipdown! Thanks to Indigobloom for a sample bag of this tea.

I found that it was not noticeably different from the regular cacao tea, though I didn’t brew them up side by side to really compare. Therefore, it tasted pretty much like hot-chocolate flavoured water. Tasty. I wouldn’t bother with purchasing the vanilla flavour myself though, just would stick with the plain.

I’m a little excited now…I just meant to get the teas out on the table for tomorrow’s packing up swap stuff..and uh 2 hours later all my packages are bundles up and just need addresses before they’re ready to go out! It also means that i’m now in a great place to have a bunch of sipdowns tomorrow bwahahaha! which is good since i added 3 teas to my cupboard tonight.

I brewed this one up and sadly, forgot about it for an hour…DO NOT DO THAT! it makes it taste not as good. lol I really wanted cacao..but i only have enough for a small cup and that’s being saved for tomorrow…

Courtney

When I get in my fresh infusion of Cacao I can send a bit more. :)

Sil

haha i need to just place an order…but i’m trying SOOOOO hard to hold off on orders until after terri’s box gets here. lol

VariaTEA

Sil, do they still have their shop in Toronto? Ordering from them is so horrible that I am planning to just go to the store when I move home and buy my Strawberry Justice there. However, I am not entirely sure their store still exists.

keychange

Haha sil…don’t be so confident about those numbers dropping…;). Just wait and see.

OMGsrsly

I don’t think their store still exists, VariaTEA. Also: It’s pretty bad that people are putting off buying from them because ordering is horrible. :/

Fjellrev

I’ve only ordered from them once. Would you all say that customer service has been consistently bad or has gotten even worse over time?

Sil

Key change…..bah! Lol it will go down! Even if it’s only for. A week!

VariaTEA – their retail location closed, after my 3 attempts to actually get to tHe store and have it be open. Every time I went it was closed, even though it was during their opening hours… For random reasons.

Cavocorax

Apparently they hired help or something a few weeks ago, so maybe service has gotten better? I’ve ordered twice with them. The first was Black Friday and it took at least 2 weeks for my order to ship. The second order was in January, I think, and it took about a week for it to ship. There’s not much communication from them…

VariaTEA

I called and emailed them multiple times and still have heard absolutely nothing back. First because I got an order and it didn’t have the Banana berry rooibos I ordered. Then I contacted them to ask if they wanted me to return the duplicates of the Cyber Monday teas they sent. Then, in my most recent order, I got ahold of them by email and they were supposed to add a sample of Graham Slam to my order which they didn’t (and I still don’t know if they charged me for it or not because of my credit card issue last month).

Terri HarpLady

I still haven’t had a chance to try this one…

Sil

VariaTEA – awful… :)
Terri – Sounds like a free sipdown for meeee! ;)

so the trick to this one is making sure your cup has a slice of the dried orange in it… that make this much tastier…though i still miss the vanilla :( It looks like ESP emporium has an orange vanilla version i’ll have to try someday :)

So the bad news? This used to be orange and vanilla and had a much creamier creamiscle sort of taste. the good news? I still like it :) Though truth be told i really liked the vanilla/orange thing Herbal Infusions had going on with this one. I may have to see if i can find a way to replicate it. Dropping the rating a bit since the tea has changed, but it still generally tasty. :) Of course now this also makes me wonder if they’ve changed their cacao tea from when i fell in love with it…

Sipdown…and i’m SOOO SAD! I wish I’d accosted Indigobloom for more than a cup of this one. I don’t have the same issue with Lapacho that the girls do – for me it’s just another honeybush.rooibosy whatever leaf thingy dingy :) (yes technical term)

This smells heavenly and steeps to a delicious creamy orange brew. On a random side note, this would probably make some seriously kick ass tea infused vodka for my next experiment. This really is an orange creamsicle in liquid form, just a little less sweet, making it PERFECT.

Honestly…i’m just going to go see if i can eek out a bit more from my leaves….i hope. please. YUM!

I’ll never finish this before it goes stale… I’ll share some! :D

Plunkybug

I swapped the rest of this out at our swap this weekend, not for the taste, but for the lapacho itself, which is also why I swapped out the Amaretto too, even though I do like both. There’s a health concern I have with the lapacho, and while it is generally a safe tea, there are some situations where not enough is known about its effects, and is considered questionable.

Indigobloom

Heather, yeah I remember reading about that! but, I figure everything in moderation right. I mean, I drink this tea every once in awhile, and it can’t be more harmful than alcohol, which I do occasionally have, and is my standard for comparison heh :P

Plunkybug

Yes, potentially, moderation could be ok, but with the lapacho, it isn’t known well enough, I think, and the effects could be more immediate and harmful for certain people. But most people can drink it fine.

Indigobloom

That makes sense. If I ever noticed an ill effect from it I would certainly stop drinking immediately, knowing the hazards!!

Plunkybug

I think the main hazards are pregnancy related, so if you aren’t pregnant, you are probably ok. If you are pregnant, or TTC, then it may not be the best tea to drink.

Indigobloom

ah well I don’t plan on getting pregnant just yet! but it’s great to know, I’m glad you mentioned it!!

Plunkybug

I did a check on it once and this is what I found on lapacho…

Safety Issues
When taken in normal dosages, lapacho has not been found to cause any obvious side effects. 3 However, full safety studies have not been performed. Furthermore, the anti-cancer actions of lapachone raise serious concerns about the safety of lapacho for pregnant women, because like cancer cells, cells of a developing fetus rapidly divide. Also, a study in animals found that lapachol caused fetal death. 20 For all these reasons, pregnant or nursing women should not use lapacho. Safety in young children or those with severe liver or kidney disease has also not been established.

Indigobloom

That doesn’t sound so bad! asides from the pregnancy bit, of course.

Plunkybug

Nope. Not bad except pregnancy and also surgery. It has a blood thinning quality, iirc. Might be he other way around. You’re not supposed to have it two weeks prior to surgery. I think it affects the blood clotting.

Indigobloom

Oh?? I had no idea. Wow

drank Vanilla Cacao by Herbal Infusions
11287 tasting notes

SIPDOWN! This one is interesting. I probably should have started with the regular version of this before the vanilla one but you only live once! :) This isn’t a bad tea but there’s a weird taste going on that i don’t like. I have a feeling that if this was just cacao, then i’d likely enjoy it a bit more. We’ll see, as i have both the mint and the regular version from my swap this weekend.

Indigobloom

if this is anything like how the mint compares to reg cacao, you will be blown away :P

Kittenna

Recommendation – only steep the cacao for the recommended 3-5 mins. I think it gets a bit barky after that. Idk how long you infused this one, but yeah.

Herbal Infusions Tea Co.

You could be picking up on the rare rosita de cacao that we source from Oaxaca Mexico in this one! It has butterscotch notes with a caramel finish. Good points on steeping time though- the longer it steeps the more the cinnamon will come to the forefront. Check out mint cacao or the original to get a better sense of the base flavour :)

Sil

thanks guys. still have lots of the regular and the mint in my box of swaps so for sure will keep that in mind for those ones

Thanks to Indigobloom for passing along a sample of this one yesterday! Also, sipdown!

I’ve had a lapacho orange (without vanilla) before, and don’t recall being terribly enamoured with it, but after giving her pouch of this a sniff, I felt it was necessary to try this. The orange flavour here is quite strong, and combined with a lovely creamy aroma (vanilla), which came off as almost a yogurt-type smell when I poured the leaf into my infuser.

Flavourwise, this is actually rather good. Very orangey, in kind of a cross between orange pop and fresh orange sort of way (but thankfully not orange peel!), which is tempered by a creaminess. (I really seem to like citrus cream teas, though I don’t much care for citrus in tea by itself despite loving lemons/limes!) The lapacho isn’t even really causing “scratchy throat syndrome” too much (maybe a little), which it usually does for me.

I don’t think this would be a tea I’m too likely to purchase for myself, only because I’m wary of lapacho for a few reasons, and don’t like that it makes my throat feel scratchy, but the flavouring is pretty great here. If the base was honeybush or something, and the tea tasted the same, I’d probably knock my rating up to about 90, but given that it’s not a tea base I favour, it does lose a few points. I’m curious, however, how this one would be iced and/or made with milk and frozen into popsicles… (it tastes like a creamsicle, and how awesome would it be to have healthier creamsicles…)

ETA: Re-steep in half the water still has flavour, but I’m not in love with it.

Preparation
Boiling 5 min, 0 sec
Indigobloom

Hehe funny thing is… I believe Dan does custom blends :P

Sil

I may need to pull this out of my box tonight…i love me some orange flavoured things and i don’t mind lapacho

Kittenna

Also if you’re worried about smells, this would be one to drink. It’s potent! I kept it apart from my other teas (I separated all the swaps from you guys into unflavoured, flavoured, and contaminating, haha).

Indigobloom – something to keep in mind!

Sil

Kittenna – Yeah i’m doing that tonight… right now it’s two boxes: smelly and not so smelly. I need to get all organized tonight

Indigobloom

I really love the combo of orange and lapacho. but I think it’d go well with honeybush as well. Another thing to go on the spreadsheet :P

Terri HarpLady

So, the Lapacho in this is Pao D’Arco, correct?

Sil

IB does that mean you’re getting rid of yours or you meant rebuy on the spreadsheet?

Indigobloom

oh sorry! I meant the private blend from Herbal Infusions, same flavouring but with a honeybush base maybe?

Sil

aaaah i love the existing blend. No need for custom blend here! to the point where i am actually contemplating picking up more…soon…like i need more tea. lol

Kittenna

Terri – I actually have no idea! Google time…

Kittenna

Yes, that would be right. Do you have info that might interest me/us? I’m curious :)

Indigobloom

Kittenna/Terri: All I know is, it’s tree bark… and it’s good for treating asthma :)
Sil: yep this base is amazing for me! but… I also don’t make it the traditional lapacho way. steeping in boiling water for 15 min!

Kittenna

I know it’s not good during pregnancy, and I think it’s in the legume family. I just make it my usual herbal way, i.e. boiling, 5+ mins.

Terri HarpLady

Here’s what (little) I know (LOL):
Lapacho is also known as Pau d’arco, or Taheebo. It’s a south american tree, & you use the bark for tea. It’s main action is strengthening the immune system, but some people have used it as a cure for cancer, fungal infections, etc.
When using it therapeutically, as in drinking it daily, you have to take a break every couple of weeks, because it does contain some toxins that can build up in your system. The herbalist I know recommends alternating between Lapacho, Echinacea, & Astragulus…It’s been awhile, but I think it was 2 weeks on each one. Since they have different toxins, that keeps you from having any side effects, & since their action on your immune system is slightly different, you’re strengthening your body in different ways. I have some Lapacho here, it’s horrible, LOL :) I haven’t drank it in awhile.

Kittenna

Thanks for the info! Luckily I rarely drink it, so I should be good :D I have not tried it plain, just in a few blends, of which this one is by far the tastiest (but as I said, I would be happier with a honeybush base, haha).

Indigobloom

I’ve tried the plain version, from Tea Emporium. It was decent! but then I love pu-erh and they have similar profiles in some ways.
Thanks for the info Terri! I have a friend that drinks Lapacho for her asthma and I don’t think she knows about the side effects or rotation option.
