drank Darjeeling by Ahmad Tea

This was a gift from my boyfriend for my birthday, as h knows I like a Darjeeling, and my stash is currently lacking in Darjeeling’s.
And, I’m pleased to say, this is a solid, decent cup of tea! This isn’t a fancy, bells and whistles cup of tea. Rather its good and solid and just the right thing for those days when you just want a good cup of tea.
Well done, boyfriend! Well done indeed!

The black tea itself is alright, nothing special, but good. The hint of vanilla is a stretch of a description, can’t really taste it at all.

1/1/2016 Evening cuppa. 12oz/212F/2min I didn’t measure the leaf, but I’d guess maybe 2 tsp. Someone gave me a little set of cute gift tins. I find that Ahmad teas always make a nice cuppa, and are great for builders tea. A little bergamot, a little brass, very nice sweetened.

Leaf version.
After the first steep the bergamot was on the front, followed by a subtle impression of orange zest and then long, earthy aftertaste.
In the second steep the bergamot and zest disappeared, and earthiness was much more subtle, replaced by fantastic malty and nutty notes.

drank Cardamon Tea by Ahmad Tea
19 tasting notes

As a true tea addict, I couldn’t resist buying this while browsing my local Middle Eastern market! As a huge fan of cardamom everything (green cardamom is incredible), I bought a 100 bag box before even trying it. It’s pretty straight-forward, a cardamom scented black ceylon tea in a bag- because it’s processed and fit into a bag, it has a super bold punchy flavor right away, and the cardamom is decent, it is wonderfully complementary- it does come through but not as strong as I’d like it to.

Cardamom almost has a “peppery” sharpness to it when it is a fresh pod, this bag is missing that freshness, but the overall cardamom-ness is present. This makes an excellent milk tea, but I often drink it straight.

drank Aromatic Earl Grey by Ahmad Tea

Personally, I found this very similar to Twinings Earl Grey. Which is cheaper for me to buy, which is why I won’t be buying this again, not because it’s an unpleasant tea. The smell in the tin is just amazing, it doesn’t hold that aroma after steeping though. It has a pleasant bergamot flavour, and a good black tea base.

drank barooti by Ahmad Tea

Another strong Assam tea from Ahmad. This one tastes very similar to the malty Kalami Assam. I believe the Kalami is the long leaf version, and Barooti is the broken leaf version. A person with a more discerning palate than mine would probably be able to detect the difference in quality, but, so far, I think I like this one as much as the Kalami Assam. I’ll definitely be enjoying more taste tests to compare the two!

Paid HKD30 (roughly GBP2.50, USD3.90) for 100g. Very reasonable price.
It is a Ceylon base Earl Grey.

This is my second time buying and tasting a ceylon base Earl Grey tea, after the Lipton one.
I liked Ahmad’s better than Lipton’s. The bergamot flavour was more subtle and less artificial. The ceylon base was smoother and less astringent.

I just don’t think ceylon tea pairs well with bergamot flavour. Can’t say I like it.

I agree. I love Nina’s Earl Grey when it had a Keemun base SO MUCH. They switched to Ceylon and I can’t drink it. :(

Louise Li

@ashmanra Oh yes, I love Earl Grey with Keemun base, like it with Assam base too.
I haven’t tried anything from Nina’s yet, will have a look. Thanks :)

My grandmother drank this Earl Grey pretty often. I enjoy it out of memory, and I personally enjoy the more orange and lemony zest of the bergamot in the taste. The perfume botches my nose when I open the bag, or, at a distance, my nose really likes it. When I brew it, the smell is way better. It has a pretty smooth, malty taste and I actually prefer it to some of the black teas that I’ve had, save Irish Breakfast. I can do it with or without cream and sugar. I am glad that I have it, but I’m not sure that I would buy it for myself personally.

I bought this for the cute-as-hell little red double-decker bus tin. I’m reviewing this from memory, so I don’t recall steeping time, temp, or those details, since it was probably a year and a half ago I finished the last bag. I do remember it wasn’t as strong a black tea as I generally like. Others have mentioned Assam, but I think there was more Ceylon, since my experience is Assam is a stronger black tea (and I LOVE Ahmad Barooti Assam). This was definitely more delicate, which is how I’ve experienced Ceylon teas. Likewise, I remember being surprised when reading the label that it was supposed to have bergamot in it, since it didn’t taste like Earl Grey to me at all. Still, it was a nicely civilized tea, clean with a smooth finish, and I did enjoy it, even if it seemed weak to me. (And while I don’t remember specific steeping times or temps, I do remember preparing it the way I usually would Assam, and it was nowhere near as strong.) And now I’ve got the cute tin!

Great to find another Ahmad fan here! I love their teas! Thanks for the review!

Chi-Town Anglophile

Thanks for following me! I’ve returned the favor, as you’re another Ahmad tea fan. I’ve liked anything Ahmad that I’ve ever tried. I’ll review their Barooti Assam some time, as I think it’s just fabulous.

Mike

Nice! I’ll have to look for that one! I’m flying through my Kalami Assam! Thanks for the follow, have a good one!

Mike

I finally found some Barooti Assam on the weekend and drank some today! It’s great, very similar to the Kalami Assam, nice and strong, crazy cheap…love it!

I love the Ahmad Tea Company, and I love this tea. I think I paid $8 for 16 oz! It tastes great to me; malty, good strength, with kind of a raisin or plum flavor. It holds up well to multiple steeps. I went with 3.5-4 minutes, as you guys recommended on here.

It’s only fitting that for my first review here I start with English Tea No. 1 by Ahmad, one of my favorite black teas. I first bought it a few years ago, thinking it was an English Breakfast kind of blend. For all intents and purposes, it is. One can hardly taste the bergamot, especially if like me, you take your black teas with lemon and sugar. The blend is strong but not overwhelming, not bitter. I would agree with others who describe a dry finish, with a white wine note. A splendidly drinkable tea, good for all day.

Quite serviceable for something that’s not looseleaf—a long shot better than Twinnings. Strong enough to stand up to all the milk and sweetener you could wish for.

I received a sample of this from a lady I met at my prenatal aqua class. She is from Russia and says they drink a lot of tea there. She and her husband are big tea-drinkers, and she was excited to discover a little English pub here in town that sells some of the same teas she had in Russia. She gave me a sample of this, and I was surprised by how good it was (I don’t usually care for bagged tea). But this was delicious! It’s a lovely, lovely tasting black tea (I think on the Ahmad website it says it is a Kenyan black) with a refreshing sparkle of lemon and lime flavor. I want more! I wish this came in loose-leaf!

We have a store across the street from me that sells Ahmad Tea. I will have to see if they have this flavor.

This is kind of like English breakfast tea for people who don’t necessarily like it with a punch in the face. It’s kind of like a sleeping in breakfast tea, really.

The dominant note to me is the Ceylon. It’s strong with that kind of crisp, cooling feeling that I associate with it. There’s a decent amount of Keemun in here too adding a toastiness. There’s a slight amount of the malt and heft that I associate with an Assam.

The cup perhaps lacks the depth I would normally enjoy, but I’d drink it again without complaint.

drank English Breakfast by Ahmad Tea

2/2/2015 2bags/10oz/212F/2min Pretty standard english breakfast tea, given to me for Xmas by my brother-in-law. Brewed weak, so for the next mug I’ll use three tea bags. With a bit of milk and sugar, an acceptable builders tea. If I bought this for myself (and I might) it would be for the darling wee little tins it came in, not the tea.

The secret to getting a good cuppa out of bagged tea is more tea, shorter steep time.

This is perhaps my favorite bagged tea. The way I stumbled upon it was kind of funny. I was on a trip to Raleigh for training, and in Cary to meet my friend at a Thai restaurant. I went into a Turkish store to ask for directions. It turned out that the restaurant was directly across the parking lot. I felt bad not buying anything at the store, so I bought this tea, thinking it would just be so-so. I’ve been searching every store in southeastern North Carolina for this tea since I finished the box…I may have to buy it online. I’ve rambled enough…nice tea, a very smooth Ceylon…highly recommended.

We got Ahmad in Brooklyn . Everywhere, especially in Turkish and Russian stores

Mike

Haha, yeah, if only I realized how great that tea was when I lived in Brooklyn! :P I lived on Quentin Road, within walking distance to several Turkish and Russian stores on Kings Highway and 86th Street, haha. Where are you in Brooklyn?

K S

My favorite company for bagged. The sell many varieties in loose as well. A solid Cheapster Steepster brand.

Mike

Hahaha, I love that term, KS!! I’m definitely a Cheapster Steepster! :P I found a Turkish store near my sister’s house, hoping to find some Ahmad tea when I go there on Thursday!

Found this in my tea cupboard when I was cleaning it out the other day. This is a very mild earl grey. The bergamot is very light almost not even there. It’s not a bad earl grey but it’s not the best either. Just meh for me.
