Thanks to Lena for the ‘krab’ tea!

3g/6oz/175/2:30 – Smelling this and thinking of sea food, I can totally see the crab comparison. Or maybe lobster tank – that sort of salt + crustacean smell? Something like that. The initial taste has that same flavor, too, but while I can see it, it’s probably not my first thought. My first thought is “oh, Chinese green”.

My description for a lot of the Chinese greens I’ve tried includes briny. This one gets it a tiny bit but as it cools but what really surprises me about this is that as it cools, instead of the brine taste getting stronger, there’s a delicate sweetness to it, especially in the tail, that shows up more. And that pretty much makes me love it because I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in a Chinese green. So woo hoo!

And thanks Lena!!!

LENA

You’re welcome!!! I’m glad you are enjoying it! Thanks for the swap.

drank Yunnan Gold by Teance

Why did the leaf smell fruity when I opened it? Seriously fruity. That’s so weird. Tastes fine though. Maybe a little sweet. I wonder if it was sitting next to a flavored tea in the pantry – this is one that I just have a small sample of so it is in a plastic bag. Weirdness.

It’s good though. Because of the weird sweetness (which maybe is aftertase from my gum? Would Extra spearmint do that?) I’m getting a bit of a chocolate taste. It’s a tiny bit flatter in flavor than when I’m at home but that’s because I either use bottled water at work or nasty nasty tap water. I’ll choose flat tea over undrinkable nasty tea any day.

Jillian

Well tea’s really good at absorbing oders so I’d guess that the gum or something similar might be the problem. The smell and taste I get from Yunnan is primarily smokey, while granted I don’t have a lot of experience with this type of tea your’s sounds pretty far off.

Auggy

Hah! Yep, I think I had it next to a blackcurrant flavored tea, both in thin plastic sample bags. Oops! But the faint sweetness actually works with it so I’m going to mark that down for future reference but keep on truckin’.

drank Jardin Sauvage by Lupicia

In my world, rooibos = cardboard. Even flavored rooibos makes me gag. But, I’ve never had green rooibos. I’ve heard of it but never had any deisre to try it. However, this Lupicia sample came in at just the right time for me to actually try this tea instead of just letting it camp out in my pantry on my tea shelf for months and months. I needed another tea tonight because I needed a little comfort and also in my world, tea = comfort.

I wasn’t expecting to like this. Rooibos, you know. I hate it. But this? This was pretty awesome. The fruit flavor wasn’t strong mango or citrus – it was almost sweet melon or starfruit-like. Sweet, light… not knock-you-back strong but definitely the dominate flavor.

After trying this tea, I don’t know what green rooibos tastes like but I’m willing to not lump it in with normal rooibos and hate it. I’d even go out on a limb and say I’d like to try it plain.

Some flavored teas have a nasty aftertaste that make me need to chew a piece of gum afterwards. But this one, like most Lupicia flavored teas I’ve had, doesn’t have that ickiness.

So yeah, this whole babble has the bottom line of not all rooibos is evil and a prime example of that is this tea.

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

Chrine is glad you’ve found a rooibos you like. Also, the photo of the tea is colorful and pretty.

Jillian

Cool, I’ve never tried green rooibos so I’ll have to remember to keep an eye out for it.

Auggy

I’m sipping on the second steep now and the flavor is maybe the tiniest bit weaker but it really is a lovely cup. Full of flavor but the flavor manages to be delicate at the same time (go Lupicia flavoring!). And the lack of nasty undertaste that I always associated with rooibos makes me want to try out a plain green rooibos.

takgoti

Yaaaaay!

drank Keemun Rhapsody by Adagio Teas

I needed to either take a nap or have tea. I selected tea. I normally have Keemun at work which is where I keep my tin of Rishi so I was really expecting the same taste when I took my first sip. But then I remembered why I love this one so much. Smooth, flavorful, so yummy. Just perfect.

I’m feeling uninspired by this tea today. It has a light flavor, not overwhelmingly lemon (which is good) but just seems to be missing a little something (which is bad). It needs to be treated as a more delicate black (because it is) but I keep forgetting that (because I’m not awake first thing in the morning).

takgoti

That not being awake in the morning thing is why I am eternally indebted to the inventor of the post-it. I stick them on everything when I am actually awake to remind myself of things that I forget when stupid o’clock rolls around.

Auggy

Haha! I actually have a post-it note inside my tea cabinet with the amount of leaf I need to make up a pot of black tea to fill my and hubby’s travel tumblers. I can’t do the math to figure out 16oz + 12oz = Xg at 7:30am!

Jillian

I usually just use a tea bag in the morning on school days (yes, I know, shame on me). Bagged tea is a lot harder to wreck when I’m feeling like a zombie and not paying attention.

Drinking this straight after brewing for 4 minutes is punishment.

Drinking this with a little milk and sugar after brewing for 4 minutes is yummy!

Does that make me a wuss? Eh, it’s good so who care!

Jillian

No, I think a good, dark assam isn’t meant to be drunk straight.

Auggy

I’m not all that knowledgeable about what constitutes a good Assam – when I first started drinking tea, I tried some and was so turned off that I avoided it until just recently. Now I find that I like it but I just don’t have much experience to know if what I like is actually good or not, if that makes sense?

So I’m very open to any suggestions for good Assams!

takgoti

Hah. I don’t know too much about Assams, but since you just ordered A&D and they’ve been showing a really great track record, you could very well have a good one on your way. Thomas Sampson is an Assam – though I haven’t been paying him much attention since I’m slightly obsessed with his counterpart.

Auggy

Now that I’ve finally bitten the bullet and ordered it, I’m so looking forward to these teas coming in. Part of my hesitation was knowing that one of the teas was an Assam and not knowing if I liked Assam or not. But since I’ve had some English and Irish Breakfasts, I’m more comfortable that I will like it. YAY!

Today started off bad. Things just weren’t clicking and every indication pointed to a bad, bad day. And bad days don’t do well with happy, fruity teas for me. So I pulled this one out as a better fit for my mood.

The morning continued to suck. Then my tea cooled enough to drink. Because of the smell, I expect a flat taste that sort of kicks me in the teeth. But it doesn’t. Yes, it’s strong and really stands up to milk. But it has a really great depth of flavor that sort of plays around in my mouth as I drink it. A definite improvement to the day.

And then I saw this and the day got even better. http://tinyurl.com/lobstercar

takgoti

That was my day yesterday. Sucky day full of suck and suckiness. Here’s hoping today goes well for both of us.

Hee. Lobster Car.

LENA

Hey, it’s Friday AND you saw a lobster car. I’m sure things will look up!

drank Jade Cloud by Rishi Tea
911 tasting notes

Must. Order. More. Tea.

I have such a small hand full of oolongs and greens now which is sad because that’s pretty much what I’m going to have in the evening. In fact, I have enough leaf to do one, maybe two more cups of this tea.

So the big question: do I order more Rishi so I can get more of this only Chinese green I love? Or do I go somewhere else to get new teas and just suck it up for a while and be Jade Cloud-less?

These are the tough choices in my life.

But on the plus side, kitty-girl is happy and drugged up and the lump wasn’t a tumor. Woo!

takgoti

I won’t lie, I’ve been thoroughly impressed with Rishi so far. This is one of the ones I ordered, but I have yet to drink it. It’s on the queue for tomorrow.

takgoti

Doi. I’ve been doing math all day, it’s the math’s fault. I totally meant to say YAY! about your cat. You must be relieved.

jennlea

I really, really like this tea and would be sad if I ran out so I don’t envy your decision. Good news about the kitty!

Jillian

Really glad to hear about your kitty. And no Rishi tea for me. Boo.

Auggy

Yep, kitty is doing great and we are relieved! YAY!

@takgoti: Math is evil. This tea is good. Though I will say that I have enjoyed it more after it has gotten a little older. When I first got it, I got a saltier taste from it but it seems to have mellowed a bit that makes me like it even more.

@jennlea: I’m hoping to find a tin of this in the store so I don’t have to choose!

@Jillian: Why no Rishi? I’ve only tried a few of theirs and this is my favorite. The other two are decently good.

Jillian

Because shipping costs are evil. It’s $20 minumum to get a package from them shipped north of the border. Hmph.

Auggy

Ah, that would totally do it! The few Rishi things I’ve picked up were actually in a store so I haven’t ordered anything directly from them. And the first ones I got, I got for the tins. :)

drank Lili'uokalani by SerendipiTea
911 tasting notes

Holy monkeys. My first sip and the fruit just smacks me upside the head. Which is really mean first thing in the morning, especially when I’m in such a not-happy mood. I think if I were in a better mood, I might have enjoyed the overpowering fruit aspect of this (though maybe not), but as it is, I just wanted to dig through the liquid to find actual tea. I think there was some tea taste at the end but it could just be the result of my taste buds being beaten into submission.

I wasn’t sure what fruits exactly were included while I was drinking it and if pushed to guess, would have gone with peach (which is in it). Which is so incredibly NOT what I think of when I see a name like Lili’uokalani. Peach is not a tropic fruit.

The only flavored tea from SerendipiTea that has disappointing.

takgoti

If that word is pronounced how I am pronouncing it it’s really fun to say. Shame about the smacking, though.

Auggy

You would think that being named after the last queen of Hawaii, the tea would be a little more noble and well, tropical than tarted up like a cheap, peach-flavored hooker. But alas, no. I don’t think the queen would have smacked me, but the street walker totally did.

Iced from yesterday. Disappointingly bland. Not sure if it is the tea or me, but considering how yummy this tea is hot, I’m guessing I didn’t steep long enough before icing.

That makes me feel like I’ve put it on a cake. Which I didn’t. Though now that I think about it, I’m intrigued by the thought of tea-flavored icing.

ETA: Hmm, maybe it isn’t me because as the tea warms up a bit, more of the yummy flavor comes out. So I think this is a tea that is best hot.

takgoti

Hmm…tea icing. Could be scrumptious. Could be a disaster waiting to happen. It does make one wonder. Someone has to have made this. I believe I might have heard tale of a green tea cupcake around these parts.

Auggy

Oooh, green tea cupcake. I’m intrigued!

Icing-wise, I’m thinking of a pound-cake like icing. Maybe on a green tea cupcake. Hehe.

Carolyn

In Isa Chandra Moskowitz’s “Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World” she has a recipe for green tea cupcakes with green tea glaze and almond flowers. Her recipes are absolutely out of this world. You might want to take a look at that. (Or, come to think of it, I might want to try this out.)

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

Tea icing does sound yummy to me.

Auggy

@Carolyn: OMG, that sounds good. I’m going to have to hunt that down. Thanks!

I’m trying to be a better tea logger and actually post semi-regularly again! I’ve let my tea tasting senses become too complacent – it’s time for some focused and attentive tea drinking!

Sometimes my notices for PMs and such have been questionable. Email me at your own risk at aug3zimm at gmail dot com.

1 – 10 – Bleck. Didn’t finish the cup.
11 – 25 – Drinkable. But don’t punish me by making me have it again.
26 – 40 – Meh. Most likely will see if the husband likes it iced.
41 – 60 – Okayish. Maybe one day I’ll kill off what I have in my pantry.
61 – 75 – Decent. I might pick some up if I needed tea.
76 – 85 – Nice. I’d probably buy but wouldn’t hunt it down.
86 – 100 – Yum! I will hunt down the vendor to get this tea!

Not that anyone but me particularly cares, but there it is.
