Thanks, derk! Even though she told me there was an envelope on its way to me, and even though we had discussed this tea’s existence, I was pleasantly surprised to receive it.

The smell of the bag and the brewed tea is quite peachy. The taste is peach too, with a subtle mint note that’s a bit peppery. The flavors go well together.

For a political pun of a tea (which I enjoyed), this is quite a tasty tea. Thanks. I may have to buy more as gifts.

Flavors: Mint, Peach, Peppermint, Tulsi

Preparation

(I have already ordered more.)

I got some today to try as well! Thank you, Derk!

Looking forward to you and Derk having a brew session this weekend!

derk

I know you’re on a hiatus Mastress Alita. If you consider one of the bags as meme-orablia, and the other bag as a good chuckle, then I didn’t send any tea at all!

Another humble Steepster gathering in San Francisco. I’m tickled.

Today I was craving a good black iced tea. This… is really good!
I brewed it hot and poured it between a few containers to cool it down before pouring it over ice. It’s just as great of an experience, but different. I will need to make this more often, now that I have my own supply of wild unsmoked Lapsang Souchong! The malt is very strong, and so are the sweet honey notes. Mmm!

Flavors: Honey, Malt, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 3 min, 15 sec 3 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

I can’t wait to try this one. I have it in stock. Working on sipdowns right now. >.<

Mastress Alita

It’s a good one. I haven’t tried it iced yet, but I’ve been sipping down an ice wine flavored black at the moment.

Another sample from the San Francisco Tea Festival.

It smells a little vegetal. It tastes vegetal too, and it’s very mild overall. There’s a hint of sweetness and a note that is a little like pine. It’s pretty good, maybe a bit too mild.

Flavors: Pine, Sweet, Vegetal

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 1 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 16 OZ / 473 ML

I am going to be late for this. Arriving in the area March 7th if anybody is from the area. Staying in Santa Clara a few days.

derk

!! Just the 7th?

derk

D’oh. I can’t read.

Cool, I live in San Jose. I’ll be free Friday night and during the weekend.

Here’s another sampler from the San Francisco Tea Festival.

It’s very subtle. I can taste the spearmint and something that reminds me of citrus. Oh, and a light apple note. This is very thirst quenching and would be good cold (the last bit was a little cold by the time I finished it.) I don’t understand the “detox” thing, maybe just marketing.

Note: The tea bag has no string. I fished it out of my cup with a spoon.

Flavors: Apple, Citrus, Spearmint

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 2 min, 0 sec 2 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

My friend got this at the SF Tea Festival. It said something about walnuts, but I am unclear whether that’s an ingredient or one of the flavor notes. She’s allergic and wasn’t going to take any chances.

Oh wow, I taste a honey note and something nutty. There’s a slight vegetal note too. I find it a little odd that this says it’s an oolong tea on a cache of their website (site is down; I used Google cache), but the note with the bag says caffeine free. I wonder if the gaba in this will calm me down. I’m usually calm anyway. Anyway, it’s very tasty.

Flavors: Honey, Nutty, Vegetal

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 1 min, 0 sec 2 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

I honestly don’t notice the calming effect. Perhaps if I were actually nervous or drank some before bed I could tell.

This was with my samples at the SF Tea Festival.

It gives off a strong coconut smell while brewing. Oops, I steeped it five minutes instead of four.

Hmm, there is a strong coconut flavor, but it’s kind of sour somehow. It has a nutty note too. That sourness is throwing me off. It’s otherwise pretty good.

Flavors: Coconut, Nutty, Sour

205 °F / 96 °C 5 min, 0 sec 3 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

This is a fine English breakfast tea.

The keemun they use is really nice. It’s a bit malty with a subtle sweetness.

Another sampler from the SF Tea Festival. Even with all the Festival samplers taken to my office, my home collection still needs a good deal of organization / sipping down.

Ooh, that is a smooth black tea. It’s got a malty flavor. It says on the packet, “best drunk without milk,” but I would be tempted to try it with almond milk if I had more.

I also taste a slight strawberry note, and there’s some astringency. This is a fine (pyramid) bag of tea.

Flavors: Malt, Strawberry, Tea

Preparation
195 °F / 90 °C 4 min, 0 sec 2 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

I got a box of this with my sampler bag at the SF Tea Festival last year.
It smells like black tea.

It tastes like black tea. That’s about it. But it’s pleasant and bright, not very astringent. I’ll bet it’s great iced too. It would probably do well with milk too, but it’s nice as-is.

Surprisingly good for bagged CTC black tea!

Flavors: Tea

205 °F / 96 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

I got a sample of this at the SF Tea Festival. They don’t sell it or even mention it on their website.

It’s very light and smooth, not bitter at all that I can tell. It’s earthy and vegetal, and I can taste a bit of asparagus. It’s pretty much the perfect sencha. I would like more of this!

If you’re listening, Tsuru no Maru: Make more please. もっとください!

Flavors: Asparagus, Earth, Vegetal

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 1 min, 0 sec 3 g 16 OZ / 473 ML

This sencha makes me do the Saboriman Kantarou face.

Todd

It’s really that good.

derk

I wish a can of rotten cat food didn’t explode all over my teabag (or me or my kitchen) as I was preparing hot water to brew this. If Tsuru No Maru offer it for sale, I will buy some. Have either of you received an email update?

Mastress Alita

I have not! I would be willing to break hiatus to buy this one, too…

Todd

I haven’t either. Wow, that is a senchastrophe.

I have enjoyed various teas most of my life, but have recently started exploring higher-end teas. Still, plain houjicha (loose-leaf or bagged) makes me feel like I’m in Japan.
