659 Tasting Notes
Quite possibly the most beautiful dry tea I’ve ever seen (that picture on the listing doesn’t do it justice). Pink flowers, blue flowers, yellow flowers, all against a nice shade of green. Tres joli! The flavor is a delicate combo of lemon and orange that blends nicely with the base. When I first tried this tea, I wished it was punchier, but it’s really grown on me. The fact that it’s light and subtle makes it a very relaxing tea.
Preparation
A beautifully mellow black tea. Aside from Irish Breakfast, unflavored blacks aren’t really my thing, but I do appreciate that the tea was quite nuanced, with some bread notes and a strong pecan flavor. Quite interesting.
Preparation
Got this as a free sachet in my H&S order. I’m not terribly experienced with straight senchas; this seems like a solid one to me, very smooth, a little mineral tasting with a slight touch of astringency, but nothing unpleasant. I quite like it, but I’m not sure how it compares to the other senchas on the market.
Preparation
Nnnn, not particularly impressed with this one, though I’m going to experiment a bit with the steeping time and see if I get better results. I’m not tasting the toasted sesame that was mentioned in the description, though it’s still a serviceable green tea.
Preparation
Oh happy day, the H&S box arrived. I got a restock of the Bangkok tea (and just in time, I emptied the old tin this morning) and a whole bunch of samples. Decided to try this one first. The gunpowder tea is a nice base, not astringent at all, and balances nicely with the lemon flavor. This is more on the side of lemon candy than natural lemon, but it’s still good. Once brewed, the leaves are small, frilled, and olive-colored. Aroma is the strongest thing about this tea. I think my neighbors can smell the lemon.

Preparation
Temple Road kindly sent me this wonderful sample. I really enjoyed their Tiger Monk tea, but I think I might like this one even better. As noted in the name, it’s an oolong on the lighter side, and it has this wonderful honeysuckle flavor. The aroma is fantastic, and, on the third round of steeping, the flavor is still going strong. The leaves are really luxurious-looking, too – this is a rolled oolong that unfurls into huge, dark green leaves. Delicious!
Another sipdown. This one was my favorite of the teas in the Upton oolong sampler. It has a light pleasant honey flavor. I certainly wouldn’t mind having more, but at the same time, I’ve found other oolongs I like better, such as David’s vanilla orchid. However, if you’re never had a formosa oolong and want to try some, this would be a great tea to start with.
Preparation
I’ve really fallen behind on my tealog, but now that I’m looking at so many empty tea tins I realize I better face up to it. So this is the last of the mango tea. I’m sorry it’s gone, but I probably won’t go out of my way to restock it, in part because I didn’t like the base when I first got it. I don’t mind it now, but I wonder if I would have to get accustomed to it all over again after going awhile without drinking it.
