Ugh; I feel like I’m really burning up and that makes me super nervous ’cause Tre has been feeling sick all of yesterday and today; I cannot afford to get sick and miss work!

But anyway; my Aunt Nancy is one of those people who is “super into tea”, which I put into quotations because she’s really more one of those people who likes tea a lot, but doesn’t know much about it. We all know the kind; you say “Oh yeah, I love tea” and she responds “Me too! Have you heard of Teavana” or “I just bought the best Vanilla Rooibos from Tetley” or “Have you tried Passion from Starbucks?”. Literally she has said all of those things to me. And I bite my tongue every time because she’s 65 and well meaning and I don’t want to be a snobby brat when she’s usually very hospitable to me. But it can be frustrating because she’ll ask me my opinions on tea things and when I go more into detail about stuff like tea prep or my “favourite tea” or where I’ve been ordering from recently she’ll either give me a totally vacant look (which I’m pretty accustomed to) or she’ll try to “match” what I’m saying with points of her own. It goes down something like this:

Me: I’ve been trying to be more open with straight black teas lately and try things with dominant notes other than malt or bread. Recently I had a straight black with strong raisin notes and while I didn’t love it, it was a nice switch up.

Aunt Nancy: Oh, well I really like No Name Black tea. We bought a box on sale the other day, and I was really surprised by how nice the quality was. It was just as good as the Tetley we usually buy!

Me:Cricket Noises

She’s one of those people that has a really hard time admitting other people know more about different things than she does. Which is true in some regards; I mean she’s an expert when it comes to commercial sewing and bridal design and I can’t even scratch the surface on that – but just let me have this one…

One thing that is cool about her though, she is very into gardening and since the last time I saw her (Christmas) she has started growing her own herbs and things to dry and make into herbal teas, so when I was there yesterday to spend time with my Grandma she offered to let me try one of her herbal teas. The one, which I passed on, smelled very strongly of mint/coconut and not much else but the one I did have was definitely more savory smelling and unique.

I actually am not so sure what was in it other than it definitely had a lot of basil. It was nice; but it was strong and distinct. As for other stuff, I’d maybe guess mint? But I’m not really that sure. Very calming and relaxing overall though.

Sounds like your Aunt want to learn but you’re talking above her head. Forget about notes when talking tea. Give her some samples of the good stuff and ask her what she thinks. Her answer will probably be a simple: she likes it or not. You could ask “Did you taste raisin in that? I get raisin.” I think she will come around slowly but not everyone will want to try everything.

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a twenty five year old proudly queer tea addict, blogger, and all around tea geek. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preperation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
