338 Tasting Notes
This is one of those lovely golden fruity assamicas that ive luckily had the pleasure of – not your average Assam you would buy in the supermarket..
Assam & fruit aroma sorta melts in my mind into amber & black treacle. There is a lovely perfect not-too-sweetness & a every-so-slight Assamica malt character thats present when the leaf is pushed giving it a robust body & glossy edge.
Citrus/nectarine sweet n sour hidden away as well, and the first few steeps had a lovely lingering fruit aftertaste. Lovely body in the mouth & lovely clear qi energy.
Beautiful red purple green leaf as well.
Im not really much of a straight Assam drinker but this is really good quality stuff
Edit* found out its ‘historic Sinensis with newer Assamica, Dum Dum Manipuri and Cambodia’ So not just straight Assam
Flavors: Apricot, Honey, Malt, Orange, Sweet
I couldnt find an entry for this one? if there is one i’ll merge..
I totally love this tea – out of a blind test of 8 teas this one topped my scoreboard & here is the review:
’Liked this one the mostest. smaller tighter balls than others. Had nice fruit & floral aroma. Some veg. Taste had a nice fruit (cherry & pineapple?) & floral on the tip of the tongue and up the nose while swirling around in my mouth. A bit dan cong in the oil of the leaf, with boldness in this flavour which worked with the fruit. didnt have so much a milk aroma though, unsure if Jin xuan?
Liked this one, defo would buy’
Its a really fruity yummy great tasting green Oolong which I very selfishly waited to purchase some before reviewing just in case it all disappears, and is my current ‘wait for autumn golden lily harvest’ tea.
Great stuff.
Flavors: Cherry, Floral, Green, Milk, Pineapple, Vegetal
Really enjoying this one all day. Lots of sour plummy taste & aroma – I actually didnt like it oversteeped, in fact ive been flashing it all day with lower temps and its just going and going. It can explode with a funky sour taste if left to its own devices imho.
Really interesting tea, a bit like aged sheng but a differentdeep sour, some bark flavour & age or storage but nothing that puts me off. pickled plum/umeboshi tea? :)
I did write a big review all day but closed the tab so its been shortened.
Glad im getting to try these Hei Cha, as I have enjoyed the two ive had so far, & want to try some more (of the nice ones).
A bit one sided in its taste perhaps, and not as complex as I really like but the aroma is a nice one & the huigan was nice in the early steeps. Now im on something like steep 10 & its softened but still pleasant.
I would buy some of this, A good alternative to having aged sheng imo, and a 250g brick would last me forever. (& only $30) I dont know where this one falls for people who know Hei Cha – is it a good one or not? Who knows but its fruity & different :)
Flavors: Bark, Pleasantly Sour, Plums, Sour
Shows how much expectations of something can warp your view – it was a curve ball thrown by LP in a Jin Xuan blind test, & in relation to that it tasted odd & i dismissed it (partly due to the test looking for a good fruity Jin Xuan oolong), but on its own its very interesting.
Serious Aroma of roasted sugar coated nuts, or popcorn… its like being at the fair or something..
This persists for the first few steeps as it gets slightly more vegetal in nature. Slight bitterness starts to creep in as well, coating the mouth, astringent. The huigan being very sheng-like in nature, almost camphor, very leafy.
Interesting tea
I enjoyed this more the second time around – out of the blind test environment where my aim was to find fruity jin xuan – and proved once again that what-cha is the king of weird teas you never knew could exist
Flavors: Astringent, Bitter, Butter, Camphor, Green, Popcorn, Roasted nuts, Sugar
I haven’t ordered anything from them yet, but this sounds like an interesting tea. Have you tried their Long jing?
I havent, im not really a green tea fan.. You should create a thread about a whatcha order as there is so many good ones – red buffalo, zhangping shu xian light cake, I think the kenyan white is supposed to be really good.. such a range I forget which ones are talked about.. Reminds me i need to do another order with them
Taste is a weird thing. At the moment, I’m eyeing YS’s 2016 line, but I may look for a weird tea just for fun.
The Taiwanese love a good tea competition dont they.
So glad I tried this one blind as I do often wonder if my taste gets swayed by slapping a gold star on a tin of tea, but apparently it doesnt, as I gave this one an award without knowing what it was.
I found it dark-green fresh (a bit like cooked spinach) & with a fruitiness thats a bit like cherry, or something. Anyway, it totally works, coming together to form a really refreshing drink. Even the smell coming across the room is a good one, you just can tell.
Nice pungency coming from the steeped leaf in the gaiwan, again, dark leaf, nuts & cherries. some straight sugar taste as well.
Really clear soup, not bags of flavour but there is just something about it thats right.
It isnt fruity like a really fruity tea, its still a green oolong, but there is just enough sweetness & the flavour is good. Refreshing and makes you feel good to drink it…
I defo think this is worth it, and am now very interested to try their other award winners, as in my limited experience when there are a selection of competition grade oolong about, the gold one does do something special compared to the 2nd & 3rd prize, and I would be interested to see if that trend continues in Dragon Tea House, even if Im presuming its likely to be a very subtle difference if the teas are from the same company or competition/area.
Edit* Just checked and the other award winners are dong ding, not Shan Lin Xi.. oh well :) its a 2016 from Nantou, I’m going to have a google to see who won the 1st prize & try some of that one :)
Flavors: Cherry, Nuts, Spinach, Sugar
