Sipdown 2020! 34/365

I don’t know that I tasted strawberry here, nor the cloying flavour of lychee – but it was nice that it had a black base. Overall a decent fruity black, probably a good iced tea (likely what it was intended for).

Had a few cups of this recently. I really enjoy this particular creamy lemon black. It just really works well, and resteeps fairly well, too. Upping the rating a touch.

I’m sad that I can’t stop by my local DT to get tea samples… I’d really like small amounts of the new teas, but I imagine I’m just going to miss them entirely. Oh well.

Picked this up shortly before the lockdowns. I waited too long to write anything valuable about it; I recall it being on the tasty side of average, for an herbal tea. Not an overwhelming amount of hibiscus, sweet and flavourful, but also nothing standout.

Drank and enjoyed but I only remember the lackluster reinfusion. This tea doesn’t resteep particularly well.

I’d forgotten about this tea! Had a cup of it (my second-last, I believe), and it was absolutely delicious. The ingredients are so deceptively simple (black tea, cinnamon, flavours) but there’s something about this tea that makes it really stand out – perhaps it’s the base, or some secret and delicious flavour that isn’t explicitly listed!

Also, in life-related news: both parents working full-time PLUS taking care of a toddler full-time with no support is… beyond exhausting. (This is week 3 of at least 4.5 of no daycare due to an ER visit, sick provider, and virus precautions.) And my husband is definitely doing the lion’s share of childcare, too. That said – although my son’s in a very active/constantly-climbing/needs attention all the time phase – he’s also an absolute delight right now, repeating everything we say, picking up new words, mannerisms, habits like a dry sponge. It’s a nice time of his life not to be missing out on. When we make it through this, I think we’ll look back and be grateful that we got this chance we otherwise would not have had – even though it has been a pretty tough last few weeks.

On my morning commute today, I was just recalling a quote my mom used often: “Kids spell love T-I-M-E.” You’ll get your time back, but I’m so glad you’re investing it in the little one now!

A little on the green/turpentiney side for me, but that fades with reinfusion. Enjoyable regardless, just needs a bit of care on those first infusions.

This tea is best consumed when paying attention to what you’re drinking, so the delicate sweetness can really be enjoyed. I don’t really remember too much about my recent cup of it aside from enjoying it.

I really want to like this tea but dang, that rose is just too much. I had this with a group of other herbals the other day, and gave them all an extended resteep – bad, bad idea here. It was like a cup of perfume. This one is really only drinkable to me with a very light infusion.

Oh oversteeped rose is one of the worst flavors!

I had this other day and wasn’t impressed as I have hoped!

Even with short steep :)

Agreed with everyone else, this tea was underwhelming and just didn’t give me the Turkish delight feel I wanted from it.

I am delighted to see that I have two packages of this – maybe it was just a lucky array of ingredients, but the last cup of this I had was incredibly delicious – so much creamy berry flavour (heavy on strawberry/blueberry?) Resteeped it probably 3 times and even then, the leaves still smelled faintly delicious. Yuuummmm.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
