Dry leaf: I could sniff this all day, fragrant, a little starchy, like a bunchof subtle spices.
1st Steep: 5 seconds. Pretty much just one long honey note. Sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. It’s scent sends a warming sensation riight up to the back of my sinuses.
2nd Steep: 10 seconds. The honey note is still there, but starting to get a little of what I think of as a typical black tea flavor- subtley dark. Slightly starchy aftertaste- pleasantly sweet and adds a little thickness to the mouthfeel that had been lacking up to this point.
3rd Steep: Nearly a minute. Honey turns into a vanilla kind of taste. The warming sensation plays with my senses and sometimes Ifeel like it is cooling me as well. The starchy aftertaste becomes sweeter, almost fruity. The black tea taste is still very faint.
4th Steep: A little over a minute. Best steep yet! The vanilla and dark tea tones hit me both at once- very well balanced. The starch almost turns creamy, but not quite. The heating/cooling sensation remains and ends with a tingle on my tongue, reminescent of spices such as cinnamon or cloves.I love the mouthfeel sensations of this tea- it’s not so much the taste as the feel of this tea that creates the experience.
5th Steep: A little over a minute. Leaning more toward honey again, not vanilla. Starch flavor takes prominence. Definitely a clove note in the aftertaste that works up the very back of my tongue. Still silky.
All in all, I’m enjoying the sensations roller coaster thiis tea took me on. Will I drink it all the time? No- It’s much too subtle for me to want all the time. Especially in the morning when my brain is not awake yet and I want the flavors to scream at me. It might be nice for a cool afternoon or evening so that the warming sensations would really be appreciated.

I really enjoy this tea as a 2nd tea of the day usually. Sometimes I’ll follow the gongfu protocall, but just as often my methods are somewhat sacreligious: 1 Tb to 10 oz, steep 3 min, then re 4, then 5.
I usually am pretty sacriligeous with my steep times too. I don’t even have a gongfu pot, I just steeped in a 6oz tea cup. Next time I’m doing it your way in my large mug! :-)

Hmmm. Maybe I should try longer steep times. I think I’ve just been doing a minute for western brewing of my Verdant teas!
