1998 CNNP Fengqing Raw by Chawangshop
I got a sample of this tea with a recent order. It is a very clean mid aged tea. No off flavors. It starts off with a little smoke, but that fades quickly. Then it turns into sort of a bland tobacco flavor, with just a hint of fruit and sweet, and a mild huigan. Seems like a pretty good tea, though I’m not sure how much I like (factory) teas of this age. I don’t have much experience with them.
2015 Spring Da Qing Gushu from YS-
Very nutty and fragrant, opens up very delicate and sweetly, bordering on an almost perfume-y floral aroma, but after several steeps is a thick, bitter, viscous beast with notes of orange-peel and cardamom. The processing doesn’t seem quite perfect, there was a hint of wok taste on steeping 7 or 8, but of course this is still very young tea.
I like that one.. Got some of that Huang Shan too? I think I like that one even more.
Agree. Huang Shan tastes a little more pure…
I had a lot of Teavivre’s Fengqing Raw 2006 and ive been yawning nonstop lol. isn’t this weird??
2006 Menghai Dayi " Bada High Mountain Tea" Ripe.
This tea now sells for a whopping $150. Did you who now own this pay that much? I am only tasting a sample. Anyway, this tea is certainly very good, though not nearly good enough to justify its current price. It is on the lighter side, with that signature ripe Dayi taste in the background, rather than upfront like it usually is. Quite smooth, and definitely different than your run of the mill Dayi. Tastes like gushu. I get cocoa, a little burnt coffee, and mostly a clean shu flavor.
I’m trying a 2014 Mengku Da Ye Qing Bing Raw Pu-erh of Yong De today. It’s my first time with this tea and I am really quite enjoying it. It has no great depth yet, but does have a pleasant astringency and sweetness. Where this tea really scores is in the fact that I cannot feel my legs now and my arms are rather floppy too! I’m really feeling relaxed. After two steeps I could feel the tea drunk coming on, and at four I am almost ready to start telling everyone how they are my best mates. The force is strong in this tea.
Scott’s 2015 Wu Liang-
Damn dude. Wu Liang maintains its mantle as an absurdly undervalued mountain. Both sweet and bitter, it is pungent, slightly fruity, and feel surprisingly heavy and dense for such a young tea. There is the typical pipe-tobacco aftertaste that I associate with this terroir, and tart fruit that makes this reminiscent of a Menghai-area puer.
I finished off the 2014 Mengku today. I got about twelve or thirteen steeps before it was just sweet brown water.
I’ve now started a 2012 Mengku “Mengku Hao” sheng. It’s all honey and tobacco and bitterness so far, and is knock-your-socks-off potent. I’m enjoying it but I am not sure I should be drinking it in the evening if I am to get to sleep tonight.
I finished off the 2012 today. I only got about ten steeps out of it before it gave up the ghost. It’s a strong starter but more a sprinter than a distance runner.
Today I’m drinking the 2014 Menghai “Star of Menghai” Premium Ripe by Menghai Tea Factory and sold by Yunnan Sourcing. This was a delicious ripe with a moderate amount of fermentation taste to it. It had already begun to clear. I would say that the fermentation taste was almost gone by the third steep. This was a sweet tea quite fruity in nature. Unlike most ripes I have drank there was some qi to this tea, very relaxing. Usually something in the processing takes all the qi from a ripe tea in my experience but not here. This was an excellent tea and had all the signs of being a real Dayi tea and not a fake.
I’m not a huge fan of shu but this sounds pretty good.
The “Star of Menghai” cakes are among the premium cakes made by Menghai Tea Factory. Older ones can be quite expensive.
When I read “sweet and fruity” in reference to shu, that shu goes on my wishlist pretty much every time!
Allan I think that gut bomb brick sample you sent me is “shou of the year.” I’m still recovering from it. :P
Wymm Tea 2014 Mangnuo Tengtiao – yum. :)
