Backlog from last night:

Last night was so fun! I saw Neko Case in concert (amazing, as expected) and before that, I took a friend out to dinner at a Middle Eastern restaurant on Yonge just south of Dundas. (The food was awesome, as always).

On the menu, I noticed they had mint tea. I figured it would just be some moroccan mint blend, so I asked for a cup.

What they gave me was a mug full of black Tetley tea, bag still in. But. BUT! The mug full of black Tetley tea had fresh mint leaves floating in it.

The tea itself was kind of blah, as you’d expect from bagged. But the fresh mint leaves….wow. That added a whole new dimension of flavour to things. I seriously have to try making this on my own now.

If you’re looking for a true Morrocan mint tea The Tarboush Restaurant in Mississauga is excellent. They also have a vegetarian buffet all the time. You can order meat from the menu if you like. For the tea you have to be sure you ask for Mint tea and not Peppermint. They brew it up fresh – no tea bags.

I’m all the way in Scarborough, so getting to Mississauga would be a hike. However, I did have Moroccan mint tea at the Cafe Maroc/Sultan’s Tent on Front Street in downtown Toronto. It was sweet and minty, and I think they also used orange blossom flavouring. Does that sound similar to the one you recommended?

Updated March 2016:

I’m a writer and editor who’s fallen in love with loose-leaf tea. I’ve also set up a site for tea reviews at http://www.booksandtea.ca – an excellent excuse to keep on buying and trying new blends. There will always be more to discover!

In the meantime, since joining Steepster in January 2014, I’ve gotten a pretty good handle on my likes and dislikes

Likes: Raw/Sheng pu’erh, sobacha, fruit flavours, masala chais, jasmine, mint, citrus, ginger, Ceylons, Chinese blacks, rooibos.

Dislikes (or at least generally disinclined towards): Hibiscus, rosehip, chamomile, licorice, lavender, really vegetal green teas, shu/ripe pu’erh.

Things I generally decide on a case-by-case basis: Oolong, white teas.

Still need to do my research on: matcha

I rarely score teas anymore, but if I do, here’s the system I follow:

100-85: A winner!
84-70: Pretty good. This is a nice, everyday kind of tea.
69-60: Decent, but not up to snuff.
59-50: Not great. Better treated as an experiment.
49-0: I didn’t like this, and I’m going to avoid it in the future. Blech.
