I tried this tea the other day and let me say the dry leaves are so awesome! They are so long and tightly rolled, it was so fun to take them out of the bag. I’ve done 3 steeps of the tea so far, and finally the leaves have begun to unfurl. So far the tea doesn’t seem particularly fantastic to me, but we’ll see with a few more steepings.
Preparation
I ordered Teavana’s perfect tea maker yesterday (I swear it was yesterday) and it came to me in the mail already! I was soooo happy X) I decided to try this next sample from Zhi tea. It’s a very nice tea, similar to the Royal Courtesan. I think I really like the taste of these roasted oolongs. I definitely see myself reordering this one (and I don’t remember it being particularly expensive either).
Preparation
I was interested in trying this tea – it seems pretty prevalent (a lot of stores have it) but I haven’t seen much love for it around the interwebs.
This sample from Zhi tea looks pretty good so far. The leaves don’t really have a strong smell that green oolongs have. Instead, it smells like a black tea!
First sip: A little watery & not too strong, still tastes like an oolong _
Smelling the teapot: melted chocolate!!! oh man can’t wait for more infusions
Subsequent tasting: It actually tastes a lot like a black tea, but the aftertaste is more oolong-y. Very interesting. This is a nice and relaxing tea, I like it better than other black teas I’ve had (though honestly I probably have not had the best)
This is just a good tea.
Preparation
I decided to brew this “eastern style” – meaning I used a crap ton more leaves and lower steeping times. I used teavana’s perfect tea maker because I don’t have a yixing.
The downside to this is that I used almost all the tea I have of this and immediately felt bad because this was one of the nicer teas I ordered from Zhi.
The upside is that I actually get to REALLY taste the tea! And oh my god it was amazing. I definitely got the pine taste earlier in the steepings and then it came back later.
I’m glad I did this but I still regret using almost all of my leaves =(
I had a friend who tried a sip of it, and she told me a few days after that she wanted to have it again XD
I like how they call this “royal courtesan” instead of concubine =P Hehe
This is my first Chinese oolong after having so many samples from Tea from Taiwan. I quite like this – it’s smoother and toasty and just very pleasant.
Maybe I like roasted oolongs instead of green oolongs! We shall see, I have more tea to try from Zhi!
I would say the best steepings were the 2nd and 3rd!
Preparation
I love this tea. LOVE it. For those of you who loved and are missing Dawn from the Simple Leaf, try this.
I read the description for this tea and if I say: Everybody is Gong Fu fighting this tea Keemun style at Dawn would it be understood? I will add it to shopping list…worshipful list.
This really could be a suitable substitution for Dawn! Yes, really! I want to do a side by side one of these days to compare… but not today. Today, I want to just explore the features of this tea.
Chocolate-y, rich, robust. It has a bit of astringency, but, it isn’t overly drying. Very pleasant. Delicious!
Preparation
This tea is remarkably smooth and rich… and honestly, one thing comes to mind as I sip it … DAWN FROM THE SIMPLE LEAF! I don’t know how similar they are, really, because it’s been a while since I’ve had some Dawn… maybe one of these days I’ll do a side by side comparison.
It’s very good though. Wonderfully complex. Savory chocolate-y notes. I can even taste a hint of caramel. Lovely. Truly lovely.
