Another of my free sample teas from Zen Tea! WOW as soon as I started brewing this the smell of the rice grew to be REALLY strong! The puffed rice looks like popcorn it’s pretty great. My only experience with genmaicha is bagged, which I like quite a lot, so NATURALLY I really love this too! The nutty flavor is much stronger here than what I’m used to; all in all the tea is just much more flavorful and aromatic than what I’ve experienced and IT’S PRETTY DARN GREAT. Love this tea! Could go for another cup now, heh heh.

drank Energizing Chai by Zen Tea
889 tasting notes

Thank you to Zen Tea for sending this to me! It smells so good! I’ve never had a chai with coconut in it. I was also excited that it was pu-erh mixed with yerba mate!
For some reason when I try teas with coconut and chocolate they taste like plastic to me :[ and it’s ALL teas with chocolate and coconut. But I do know it’s just my taste buds because everyone I pass those teas on to LOVE them. Curse my taste buds :[
I’m getting a little bit of that with this tea but the chai makes it drinkable. I’m getting more of a chocolate chai with the weird coconut flavor after. It is a wonderful tea and I’m so happy I got to try it! But I give up on chocolate, coconut teas :[ And I’m still mad at my taste buds…

drank Bossa Nova by Zen Tea
300 tasting notes

So there I was lying in bed this morning, wishing for a nice breakfast tea to begin my day that I wasn’t committed to having a long gongfu session with so that I could move on to Mrs. Li’s Dragonwell from Verdant. I was actually hoping for something fun like hazelnut, though I had already tried Adagio’s the other day. When lo and behold there was a clank below my window. The mail man had come by early and when I made my way downstairs I found my prayers had been answered in the form of a package of samples from Zen Tea! Thank you Zen Tea

Not only that but when I opened the package I found that I had indeed order a hazelnut tea! And to top it all off I had seen this tea on the menu yesterday at the tea studio and had wondered why it sounded so familiar, I knew I hadn’t drank it before, but felt like I had ordered it. This is the same description and ingredients as the Bossa Nova hazelnut oolong from TeaGschwender so I can only imagine they get it from the same source.

This has a much nicer base than Adagio’s Hazelnut, no bitter ceylon, just a nice roasted oolong, good looking leaves as well, though it is hard to differentiate where the natural nut note in the oolong end and the hazelnut flavor begins, which may be a good thing. I have to admit I was a tad disappointed that this wasn’t darker, sweeter and richer, but it does taste like hazelnuts, like eating the nuts themselves and in this way the blend is successful.

I may just have to try this with extra leaf and bit of sugar the next time I make it, to try to meet my unrealistic expectations. The samples were generous enough for multiple servings. Glad I got to try it, will write my review on Zen Tea’s website after a second session. Thanks again to Zen Tea for their generosity, I’m looking forward to the roasted Tieguanyins!

Edit: enjoying this today, following the given brewing parameters for 12 mins, I also put in two rock sugar crystals. It is better, the hazelnut is fully present and it has a touch of sweet, but the oolong still feels “thin”. May end up blending my last teaspoon with Adagio’s hazlenut black oh wait I didn’t like that one at all or a straight black for more body. Edit edit: I did add a bit of Bailin Gonfu Black Organic from Teavirve to the second steep and based on the smell I thought I had created a delicious Nutella tea, but alas tis bitter, until the last sip which is dark and cool and sweet. So there is promise there, just probably need a lower temp, steep time and make it a first infusion. Yeah this aftertaste is quite delicious.

Daniel Scott

…Ew, a bitter Ceylon? There’s something really wrong with that concept.

Autumn Hearth

Ceylon is pretty hit or miss for me, it can be really naturally sweet and cidery but it can also turn astringent.

ashmanra

It seems to me that the higher grown Ceylons are the ones that can be astringent, at least amount the ones in my tea shelf. It is probably possibly with any of them, though.

Autumn Hearth

Interesting, Ceylon’s are something I just haven’t had enough experience with, mostly in British blends from Upton, a base for a few flavored blacks and one really delicious White Ceylon.

My sample of this is gone now oh nooo! Still not sure I liked it enough to actually buy it though. But is definitely good and definitely grew on me! A+ experience.

THIS ONE IS DEFINITELY GROWING ON ME the more I have it the more I seem to like it. Probably only have about one more cup left of it now, and I’m not sure if I like it enough to buy it, but definitely a good sweet dark oolong! —I ALMOST SAID BLACK TEA I actually tend to forget this is an oolong it doesn’t really taste like one at all.

I GAVE THIS TEA ANOTHER TRY. The chocolate smell was very off-putting the first time I had it and I think I may have steeped it too long too, but this time around… NOT SO BAD! I like hazelnut and this has a lot of that. I think I’ll actually raise the rating on it now, it’s not bad at all!

I got a sample of this tea and 3 others from Zen Tea! Decided to try this one tonight! AT FIRST I WAS A LITTLE BIT WORRIED because it smelled almost like… chocolate? And I’m a WEIRDO that dislikes chocolate a lot I KNOW, I KNOW, IT’S A CRIME. However it ended up tasting strongly of hazelnut for sure! It was pretty good actually, definitely creamy, but I’m still a bit ambivalent about it I guess. I think I’ll try adding some things to it next time.

drank Toffee Dream by Zen Tea
807 tasting notes

Toasty, nutty, sweet but not cloying.
A nice white toffee flavored tea.
I have found I am not IN LOVE with the white teas lately … I don’t dislike them but I’m not craving them.
With that said … this one is quite enjoyable!
The flavors are not artificial tasting and there is no cloying sweet or artificial yuck flavor left behind.
Definitely getting the nutty toasty flavor from the toffee.
I like the look of the leaves – some large ones, some rolled like ones, its pretty to look at.
Good job Zen Tea so far I like everything I have tired!
:)

LiberTEAS

I got this one too. Will try it in a day or so … looking forward to it (yum toffee!)

RachanaC (Rachel)-iHeartTeas

Weird, I commented on this and the comment disappeared. Well, all I wanted to say is that I got this one too and am looking very forward to try it. I really want to like it a lot.

Thank you Zen Tea for this lovely sample! A nice sized sample to boot!
I love coconut oolongs, pouchongs, etc when they are made well and this one sure is!
The coconut flavor is perfect and NOT artificial at all!

Sweet and floral and vegetal and a wonderful after taste!
Look for a detailed review on http://sororiteasisters.com/ coming soon!

This is my first cup today. Earlier, I just wasn’t feeling very good so I went back to bed and slept a couple of hours and I feel much better now. I am one of those people that if they don’t get the required amount of sleep, I start feeling really sick with Flu-like symptoms. Achy, cold-sweats, and feeling nauseous… and that’s just exactly how I felt this morning. I hope my body gets accustomed soon to the change of sleep patterns due to school starting up again.

Anyway, on to tea! It’s been a while (at least a week!) since I’ve had a really good Assam, so when this sample arrived today from Zen Tea I jumped all over it, deciding this would be the tea to start my day.

And it’s AWESOME! Deliciously rich. Sweet with caramel-like undertones. Delicious malt notes and an amazing creaminess to it. One of the nicest Assam teas I have ever had. It isn’t bitter, but then, I did take precautions to avoid it by steeping it in 200°F water instead of a full boil and steeping for just 2 minutes in my Breville One-Touch. This rendered the perfect cup of tea. LOVE this!

gmathis

Sorry about the no-sleep wearies. (I crawl around with a wicked headache when I don’t get my usual ration.) Creamy and malt sounds beautiful.

LiberTEAS

@gmathis: that happens to me too, if it accumulates. Like if I go for a few days with not getting enough sleep each day … I get a horrible migraine. UGH! Fortunately though, I’ve come to recognize my symptoms, even if I don’t realize it right away. When I crawled back in bed, I mumbled to my husband who was getting ready for work that I didn’t feel well, and told him I thought I was getting the flu. Because that’s exactly what it feels like to me. And I think that somewhere in my head, I knew that it was actually that I needed some sleep, but, my brain wasn’t working so out came “flu”. Now after just a couple of hours of rest I feel like 100% better.

Azzrian

Yeah same here LiberTEAS I wonked myself out by not taking proper care of myself so have been lethargic and just feeling stupid for a few days now.
Hope you get better soon!

LiberTEAS

Thanks Azzrian… I really feel a lot better than I did this morning. I just could not sleep last night, I don’t know why. It wasn’t like I was “alert” or anything (like maybe I had too much caffeine), it was more like I just couldn’t get comfortable no matter how much I tried to.

I very much enjoyed Assam Mangalam Second Flush FTGFOP1 by Zen Tea: http://steepster.com/looseTman/posts/164482#comments

What are the differences between Zen Tea’s Assam Mangalam Second Flush FTGFOP1 and No 49 Assam FTGFOP1 by SST?
http://steepster.com/LiberTEAS/posts/104708#comments

Which tea is your current King of Assam teas?

LiberTEAS

At this point, I would have to say that the Tiger Assam from A&D Damn Fine Teas is right up there with the finest Assam: http://steepster.com/LiberTEAS/posts/142885

It is difficult for me to compare the Zen Tea’s Assam and the SST Assam because it’s been a while since I’ve had the SST. I don’t usually keep the teas on hand for very long … I’m more of a taster than one who lingers over one tea for very long. I wish I could be of more help to you!

Terri HarpLady

I haven’t tried the Mangalam, but I LOVE Tiger AND #49 both!!

looseTman

Thank you both! Sounds like I’ll have to try both Tiger AND #49.

drank Northern Berry Kyss by Zen Tea
17 tasting notes

So I received 3 tea samples in the mail this morning sent by Zen Tea.
First to try on my list was this Rooibos berry blend. I prepared it Iced with no agave or sugars i like to drink Rooibos tea straight up.I Steeped it for about 5 minutes or maybe even more downside of this tea is (I think) that the Rooibos over powers the berry’s flavors cause I cannot trace a single taste of Berry’s i think i can taste the berry leaves but that’s about it … i still have a tad bit for a nice hot cup and i think i will give a second review. Still a very good quality tea but was expecting more of a berry taste hopefully i have more luck with my next 2 samples !
