Received a free sample of this in my RoT catalog. I LOVE how this tea smells. It smells like my mom’s Christmas cider. Apple, clove and cinnamon always smell comforting to me, so I guess this tea lives up to at least half of its name.
Unfortunately, the tea’s taste did not match its wonderful smell. The spice is there, it’s just really weak and watered down tasting. I steeped the full amount of time…probably a smidge more, so I think it was at its boldest. Perhaps RoT needs to cram a little more tea into their “environmentally-friendly, round, unbleached tea bag – free of wasteful stings, staples and tags”. Just sayin’…
Preparation
Perhaps if you used two bags? I find that I often have to use two tea bags to get the tea flavor I like.
Perhaps…but this was just a sample, so I only received one bag. Now if I had it as loose leaf, I would use more than suggested. :)
RoT bags always seem really weak to me. I usually have to do 2 bags in a single cup – I’ve never tried to brew a whole pot because I thought it’d take waaaaaay too many bags.
The only ROT I’ve tried is their Get Relaxed! And steeped at 7 min I think it’s perfect. I can even get 3 infusions out of it.
I think its so funny that they boast how environmentally friendly the bag is, but what about the packaging? The packet is massive and oh-so-shiney and plastically feeling that I would think it negates the lack of a string and tag.
@ teafiend – so, so true. maybe cutting out the staple allowed them to spend so much on the packaging?
@ teafiend, I thought the same thing. I understand wanting to protect the tea bag, but why not just wrap that in a small plastic bag and staple that to the catalog instead of wrapping the entire catalog?
Probably the least pretentious açai tea I’ve found, and consequently, one of the best. The flavor isn’t overpowering (but still citrusy enough to let you know it’s there) and the flavorings make a nice, calming aroma.
Be careful though – it is a green tea, so it can get bitter in a hurry. Make sure the conditions (and timing) are optimal, and you’ll end up with a kickass cup.
Preparation
Not a fan of the flavor. It’s really bitter and has a salty taste that my tongue refuses to believe is a real thing.
I’d pass on it, but if you’re in a bind, this will satisfy your need for fruity tea. I’d suggest some of the Republic of Tea’s other black teas though – like Vanilla Almond or Earl Greyer – if you’re looking for a tasty pick-me-up.
Otherwise, you’re probably better off just eating a black berry. (The fruit, not the phone)
Preparation
I don’t know what these guys are on about. This tea is awesome the way it is. I used to have this every morning as a pick-me-up before class, and it was so much better than plain Assam, Darjeeling or other black teas.
The almond flavor is where it’s at. The Republic of Tea describes it as a ‘dessert tea’. It’s really sweet and flavorful, so, try it as that. It really puts a nice touch on the end of a good meal with friends.
Be careful not to oversteep it. If it’s bitter, it’s a disaster zone.
Preparation
A great fall flavor for me. I’ve stockpiled about 3 tins of this because it gets rare during the winter, spring and summer months.
Like said before, it’s very subtle. Try it with honey with a long, long steeping time.
Learn from my mistake. Do not make it into an iced tea. You will regret it.
Preparation
This tea delivers exactly what it says it will—lemon and wintergreen. It is crisp and fresh and smells terrific. This is only the second loose leaf tea I’ve ever tried; I got this as one of the loose leaf “Sip by Sip Samplers” that Republic of Tea offers for about $4 (depending on the tea). It is smooth and lovely, and I can see myself buying more after I go through some of the huge Republic of Tea shipment of small amounts of tea and samplers that I just ordered.
Preparation
Not great, but it meets that standard Republic of Tea tastiness. It isn’t bad by any means, just not a great tea.
The lady who sold the tin to me insisted the flavor is “not quite a raspberry and not quite a raisin. It’s somewhere in the middle, there.”
Preparation
This is one of the finest teas I’ve tasted. I have anxiety issues that run in my family, and I began taking St. John’s Wort as a supplement to help keep the ol’ noggin stable. Problem is, taking 3 pills a day can get kinda annoying.
So, I was overjoyed to know that my favorite tea company – the Republic of Tea – was churning out a product that contained a standard dose of St. John’s Wort that didn’t taste like cat pee.
The aroma is awesome and the taste is absolutely wonderful. Super tasty, and brilliant even without sugar. It helps with the anxiety, but it also helps with the thirst for tea.
A ballpark win in my opinion.
Preparation
Be careful with steeping this one – not too hot of water, and fast steep (45 seconds or so).
Smell is a good mix of coconut and vanilla. It’s relatively strong smelling from the tin. The taste is white tea and coconut. With all of these tasting notes I’ve done, I’m noticing a trend with The Republic of Tea: not much vanilla taste to be had in their teas that have vanilla (so far from the ones I’ve tried). The vanilla smell is pretty but for some reason I can’t taste it. Since vanilla is listed in the title before coconut, I would have thought that vanilla would be the main flavour. It’s not a bad tea though, just a “like”, not a “love”.
Preparation
My first rooibos tea, and it was an okay experience. I received this free sample from Republic of Tea with their latest catalog. I was having a nice wedge of leftover apple pie from Thanksgiving, and I figured that the Cinnamon/Vanilla flavor profile would suit the apple pie’s flavor.
Once brewed, this one smelled a bit like potpourri. Not bad potpourri, just like something that I wouldn’t normally associate with drinking. The rooibos drippings were a dark red in color. Almost scarlet. Very pretty and very festive. The smell was earthy, and a bit medicinal, but in a feel-good kind of way.
The first sip was kind of bland, and a bit floral. The cinnamon and vanilla didn’t really come across strongly – I think the cinnamon was part of the aftertaste, and the vanilla just a hint of sweetness. I’ve been having a really bad time with vanilla teas, and I’ve yet to try a loose leaf one. I can’t stand the taste of artificial vanilla. Or the smell of it. Since I couldn’t really get a grasp on the vanilla here at all, this is inconsequential.
I’m not really sure what rooibos tastes like. So I can’t tell you if it was a dominant flavor profile, or what it was that was added to the mix. The entire thing was fairly sweet, and I’m standing by the potpourri flavorings.
A resounding “meh” from me.
Preparation
This is the Early Grey I grew up on. Like the Twinnings, it has a strong, reliable taste. Bold and full-bodied, with a great bergamot flavor pulling through. I like my Earl Greys strong, so I brew a bit long.
Preparation
This smells so good while you’re steeping it and while you’re drinking it! I really like the strong cinnamon flavor, but I can see how some might be put off by it. I am disappointed only by the lack of vanilla flavor, but I added a tsp of vanilla honey. Works nicely with it and gives a little extra vanilla boost. Definitely being harshly judged on here. Samples can do that though.
Okay, so I really like rooibos tea, which means that I like this one too.
The smell is sweet like candy, and the taste is rooibos and pomegranate. The flavour of the pomegranate is light. It smells more than it tastes, if that makes sense. I could taste the pomegranate more as my tea cooled off than when it was hot. I can’t smell or taste the vanilla at all so I would say that you will only notice the vanilla if you have a really good sense of smell and taste, or are very experienced with tasting flavours in teas.
Preparation
Nice tea for those mornings when I can’t get warm. Who knew that yerba mate and cocoa would work so nicely together? I don’t use any milk, but I’ve recommended doing so to a few people who had trouble getting past their notions of hot chocolate. They’ve liked it a lot that way.

Glad to see you drank true tea as a kid!:)
