This is the closest I’ve come to tasting vanilla in my tea. I’ve had a couple of cups a day of this stuff.. trying to get my fix! The scent is beautiful in the tin and is definitely a strong mix of red tea and vanilla.
The Rooibos and the vanilla blend so well together. This tea is smooth, truly. I don’t use any milk/sweetener and think that this makes a beautiful drink on its own. Another thing I like about this is that it isn’t a bit drying in the mouth… simply smooth and rich. Well done, Republic of Tea.
While over at a friends house watching The Office & Community (both hilarious shows btw) I was introduced to this tea. Being the only one in her “stash” that seemed better than Tazo or Lipton I decided to give it a try.
The smell of this tea is absolutely delightful. Obviously blackberry surges through every fiber of this teas being, however the sage does add a nice balance to the aroma that would otherwise be pretty fruity.
Now since this tea is technically a “dust” tea it’s a little frustrating trying to find the full range of flavor you’d desire from a tea with this name. Anywho.
Steeped at boiling for 3 minutes this tea, while fantastic on the side of smell, really needed some help on bringing out an enjoyable flavor. Due to the mild steep I wasn’t expecting the taste to come off as bitter as it was, however once reconciled by the appropriate amount of cream & honey this tea wasn’t that bad. Any ideas on the steeping time?
Preparation
The best thing about this tea is the smell. Really great blackberry aroma comes wafting from the tin and the brewed liquid. I tried two cups using my fancy new water kettle my gf just got me (kept the water warm for me!). The flavor seems to be more on the sage side than the fruity blackberry side. But I’m still not getting much from it. First time I tried about 4 mins steeping, then 4:30 the second time…not much difference. I feel like flavored/fruit teas have a hard time meeting my flavor expectations and continually come in below where I’d expect. Maybe I’m not as big a fruit…tea drinker as I thought ;)

I ended up getting the cheaper one and was COMPLETELY disappointed so I’m scared of the brand now, so I think I may pay more for the Chef Choice brand.
What was wrong with it? I haven’t used this one much yet for varying temps, but I love how it maintains a temp for you. You can keep a kettle going all day for fresh water without worrying about a thing :)
My main issue was it measures in C instead of F. It’s also pretty touchy. How much is the min you can have in the Pro and have it work properly? That was also a draw back for me. I make my tea anywhere from 2-8oz at a time.
Have you tried using Google to convert temperatures Cofftea? All you do is input (whatever temperature) C in F (or in my case the other way around) in the search box and it’ll instantly do the conversion.
@Cofftea: Mine is listed in F. Apparently you can order it in C or F, just ask the manufacturer or order from amazon. I think the one I linked before is in F (but it also says it’s currently unavailable :( ). For a minimum water amount, I’m not sure; I haven’t tried it with anything that small yet. But you can always just heat more water than you need and only use 2-8oz or however much you want. Also, from looking around it seems like there were some questions about the Chef Choice…but I guess you’ll get different opinions on everything :)
Jillian, yes I have. My issue is that the one in F is more sensitive. (1 degree C =~2 degrees F). If I’d get something like ths, I’d want exact temps, and since all of the temperatures for my teas are listed in F, I’d like that in a kettle as well. I don’t want to have to think about temperatures.
Jason, I don’t think I’ll order it from amazon- I did that w/ the cheap one and now I’m stuck w/ a $40 kettle that I don’t want and can’t return. I need to look around for the cheapest shipping (amazon was $10) and has a return policy. I’d also prefer not to measure my water after it’s boiled, that takes time and passing the water from one vessle to another and results in cooling.
@Cofftea: Ah true, I just hadn’t thought of that before. Are there many heating vessels that are designed to heat a small amount of water like that?
So I got to work (after our 4 hour delay) and discovered that no one made coffee. This tea was sitting the the break room and I decided to try it while the coffee was brewing (I always start my day with 2 cups).
The smell of the tea was offputting, but whatever that aroma was, it wasn’t present in the tea’s taste. I just felt like I had to hold my breath as I brought the cup to my lips. Ugh.
It was okay, there was the sharp bite of mint and a hint of chocolate afterwards. I bet it would be better if made like a chai (but I’m at work).
I looked online for this tea (for a picture and description) and couldn’t find much. Apparently it’s a limited edition only sold through World Market.
Pretty good. I was a little saddened to find it wasn’t pure matcha. I’ve been trying to try matcha for awhile now and have been turned off by its outrageous $30 or more a small canister. I’d hope to be able to try it in this. But for a mixture it still makes a yummy cup of tea.
Just had a cup from Pandera Breads and enjoyed very much except it smelled wonderful so I took a big sip and burned most the skin off the tip of my tongue Ouch! I agree with the other reviews it smells peachy and taste peachy but the more you start to drink the more you realize it’s a green tea. Nice tea!
Cofftea, it is so funny you should say that I was just researching the Numi chocolate that I know you love and I was thinking the same thing if only it were loose!!!!!!!!!!!!LOL
I got this from Jillian:) This is only the 2nd detox tea I’ve tried, both of which have been bags.
I didn’t even have to take the bags out of the ziplock before smelling the rooibos… uh oh. Oh well, I’ve been surprised by rooibos before. I way the bag and am not surprised when it reads 1.3g. All of ROT’s bags that I’ve tried have been extremely light, but fortunately that doesn’t mean I’ve wished for more leaf. I steeped 1 bag in 6oz of water just below boiling point for 7 min. Another uh oh, I can smell the rooibos even stronger the second the bag hits the water.
7 min later I take sip. Holy rooibos! Well at least it doesn’t taste like licorice. The almond and vanilla do sweeten it and I can taste the sarsparilla as well. Actully it tastes like a lighter, sweeter version of the Rootbeer Rooibos Fava Tea Co. sells.
Preparation
I finished this off last night. I think it was one of the best cups of this tea I’ve had because a lot of the matcha had settled in the tin so I swirled a bit of water in the tin and poured the rest of the matcha in my cup. I’m am getting dreadfully low on teas lately. I really need to place an order (or two).
I wanted something different in between the 3rd and 4th infusions of my oolong. I actually may just stop at 3 tonight because I am loving this green tea right now. I brewed up 2 bags of this in a big mug for 2 minutes making sure to beat up the bags with my spoon a bit to extract the maximum amount of matcha…anyways, I added milk and a bit of honey for a matcha latte and it is really good. So good in fact, I may have another one after this. The only thing is my tin is almost empty (and it was a 50 bag tin…) I have been wanting to finish up most of my teas lately though so I guess it has to go sometime.
Preparation
I really wanted more genmaicha but since I have no more I decided to settle on this one. I have to get more genmaicha!! I brewed up 2 bags of this in a large mug for 1:30 minutes. I usually barely steep this – just long enough in the water for the matcha to pass through the bag…but I am wanting something a bit more substantial today. It is smooth from the matcha but I’m not getting any buttery notes like I hoped for. Overall I like this tea, not enough to buy another tin, but I will most likely invest in some matcha after this.
Preparation
Made a green tea latte with this tonight using brown sugar and skim milk. I am now finishing it after putting the cup into the fridge for several hours …. I went to bed around 11:45 and at 2:25 I am up and not tired at all. This may be an issue because I have class tonight and I don’t know if staying up from this point on is going to be very enjoyable. Anyways, back to the tea, this is pretty good chilled, I will keep this in mind for the hot summer months.
