This was not what I was expecting.
I have to admit, I was expecting a much more robust nutty flavour from this tea. Instead, I can’t put my finger (or my taste buds, rather) on what I’m tasting. A little bit of fruityness here, a little bit of green tea there.
In short, it’s a good tea. Not quite what I was expecting, but I wouldn’t mind drinking this to take a break from my regular black teas.
Preparation
1.5 TB for 500mL water, no milk or sweetener.
So I followed guidelines this time. A mere six-minute steep. Much less apple-peel flavour and scent, a but more nuttiness. Mostly almond, though … not marzipanish sweet, but definitely sweet.
I really don’t like the colour, though I’m happy it comes from beetroot and not from the dreaded hibiscus.
Much better steeped cautiously. Not sure if I’ll order this one again, but it’s a tasty alternative to my must-be-rationed Super Chocolate.
Preparation
I love the colour, because it doesn’t at all match the taste. You’d expect berries or hibiscus (which I’m getting the feeling you don’t care for? Neither do I. Gross.) I really need to buy this one again. I’ve been out for over a month.
But every time I go for Forever Nuts, it turns into a “Oh, well, okay. Let’s try Love Tea…”
Hibiscus is so potent that it’s a bully. Add a touch of hibiscus for colour and suddenly the entire brew is tart and astringent. (I’m glaring at you, Celestial Seasonings.)
I was grumpy last night. Maybe if I watch FN steep next time, I’ll feel differently about the colour.
I will glare at CS along with you. If they feel the heat of enough stares, think they’ll reformulate?
2.5 TB for 500mL water, no milk or sweetener.
I let this steep too long — made it while getting supper on the table — and now an apple flavour dominates.
Before I forgot it, I liked it much better, though I’d definitely not call it nutty. Someone else compared it to an oatmeal cookie; I can go with that.
A sweet, if weak and thin, tisane. I like my brews fairly strong, so I loaded up … which may be another reason I got too much apple. And it’s apple peel I’m tasting, with all its tang and sharpness.
Not what I expected, and a quite thin-bodied, but still a very pleasant tisane.
Preparation
I don’t really consider this a chai. It technically is a spiced tea, but it’s missing the usual spices you see in a chai, and therefore doesn’t have that distinctive chai flavour. Also, this tea does not use an india black base but a chinese black. So in my mind it’s not actually a chai, but maybe I’m being too narrow minded.
Ignoring the naming, I’ll get on to the tea itself. It tastes mostly of chocolate and tea, with a bit of warmth from the spice. Good, despite being kind of a novelty. I don’t think I’d drink this tea all the time, but it’s very nice on a cold day.
Preparation
Techinally speaking, it’s a chai. :p Chai just means “tea” in a whack of languages (except in Hebrew – chai means “living”. And Kashmiri chai is traditionally made with a green base…
But now I’ll stop being a jerk and agree that if I didn’t know the ingredients or name of the tea and had some, I would not go “OH GOODNESS THIS IS A CHAI ISN’T IT?”
I know chai means tea, I just figured it was just easier to go with chai and not masala chai because some people may not have heard that use before and wonder what the heck this “masala” thing I was talking about is.
1 TB for 500mL water, half a packet of stevia (equivalent to 1 tsp sugar)
Love Electric Lemon when it’s bone-rotting cold and damp outside. I’ve commented on the deliicous sharp heat below. If you don’t like ginger or lemon, you will not like this tea. It’s straight ahead, REAL ginger. No icing or sweet little men with gumdrop buttons here.
I sweetened the brew a bit today, and I’m surprised to find the stevia mellows the heat. I guess it’s because it takes the tart edge off the lemon. Slightly sweetened, Electric Lemon tastes less medicinal, but I definitely prefer it naked. Ahem. This tea, I mean. The stevia also mutes the green tea base.
Brew this one strong and long enough and a fine sweat will break out on your forehead. However, steeped more than 4 minutes, the ginger dominates, and you lose any green tea taste. Still very tasty, but caveat steepsterite.
Chases away a chill.
Preparation
Hoo ha! Sharp! Amazing lemon scent with hot ginger undertones. Delicious and soothing ginger heat to the mouthfeel and swallow. Have tried many lemon ginger teas before and been bored. This one uses a decent green base, not too assertive, and some smooooooth ginger and lemon. Three ingredients: organic green tea, organic ginger root, natural essential lemon oil. I bet Electric Lemon would be fabulous on a bitter cold morning or when fighting off a head cold, stomach bug or (shudder) flu.
I gave it a longish steep for a green and did not add any sweetener.
Preparation
I’m in the midst of a very taxing piece of work and the winter collection is going to be my Good Job reward once I’m done. Thanks for the review!
I got a sample of the Chocolate Chili Chai, too, and I a saving that for a good stopping point in the story I’m drafting. My incentive. And it’s not even a carrot.
Seriously, Heather, I think using good tea as a reward after work gets done is a brilliant idea. That could definitely help me focus. Thanks for mentioning it.
I’ll be honest. I bought this because the novelty appealed to me. I got it home and steeped it though, and it’s not like anything I expected.
The chocolate is very much present, and the chili keeps things really interesting without actually being spicy (I drank this with milk and sugar, so that may have to do with it). I’m really liking it – it’s slightly sweet and chocolatey but not too sweet and chocolatey, if that makes sense.
Man, I’m bad at describing this. It’s just good.
Oh, and though it’s not that spicy, don’t drink it if you have chapped lips. Ow.
Preparation
I’ve decided that I don’t really enjoy cider-type drinks. So I added some black tea (mystery brand!) and milk (1 teaspoon of winterberry wine, 1 teaspoon of black tea and I eyeballed the milk). Unfortunately the black tea I used gets undrinkable after 3 mins, so the spices didn’t get to sit for the full 6 mins.
I like this combination a lot better. Its like a sweet and fruity chai with a bit of a kick (not much of one unless you spike it w/ something else).
Like I said, I am not crazy about cider but I am looking forward to working it into some other teas I want to get rid of. Some peppermint or sencha are next on the list of things in my mind to throw in with Winterberry Wine. Or perhaps I will mix the Chocolate Chili Chai with this too, since I hardly drink that.
Will I buy more Winterberry Wine when I run out? No. But I am enjoying mixing it with other tea I have. :)
Note: This isn’t a bad drink, I just don’t care for cider (“fruity spiced water”).
Preparation
I’ve been eyeing this one and wasn’t sure about it. I do enjoy ciders, so I think I’ll be ordering some of this to try out! Thanks!
This is a nice cranberry cider drink. Which is not something I usually look for, but I have cider sometimes during the winter season. So it is a welcome addition to my tea cupboard.
The cranberry is not overwhelming, just a nice sweet and tartness to the cider. The spices make this a lot less boring than it could have been. Overall I like it, but it doesn’t really impress me a whole lot because I am not a big fan of cider anyways.
Preparation
Drank this one this morning in my new glass mug… This mug lets the tea float around, and has an infused at the top so you don’t drink the leaves. This tea is so pretty to look at!! It also tastes amazing, like a key-lime pie :)
Preparation
This is another tea from this purveyor that has an incredible fragrance but the flavor is a off.
It smells sweet and strongly of berries, cinnamon and a touch of brown sugar. Once prepared, this takes on more of a tart, green fragrance.
The initial flavor was sour and tart. It eventually developed a bit of spiciness from the cinnamon and there was a subtle, lingering strawberry aftertaste. The tea in this, however, was completely obliterated. The lack of any tea presence and the initial sourness made this a mediocre cup for me.
