Good tea, but not a great work tea. It likes shorter steeping times, so if I get distracted while waiting for it to steep I have a bitter, astringent mess in my cup. However, I am starting to get to the bottom of the tin, so that’s a plus.
I can’t wait for spring. So tired of they grey skies and brown vegetation and cold weather!
I checked my cupboard at home last night, and I am indeed out of all major Earl Greys excepting some decaf teabags and a DavidsTea sample someone sent me. Woohoo! I needed something to take to work for an everyday stash, preferably a black, so I picked through my tins. I noticed this one had gotten pushed to the back, so I decided it was a good candidate for being my morning work tea.
I brewed up a cup this morning, and it’s doing its job quite nicely. No bitterness, just a good basic cuppa. It goes well with my breakfast of hard-boiled eggs and grapes. I am actually wishing for something malty this morning, but that is not this tea’s fault.
Yesterday, I made a pot of this for the hubs and I. I had some left in the pot when we were done, so I sweetened it and put it in the fridge. Pulled it out, poured it over ice, and added some lime juice.
It’s really good this way. I wish I had some fresh mint or sage to add to it, I think that would be good.
This is a good Assam blend, that would be especially nice for someone who likes the fruity, malty spectrum of Assam’s, and that like to take their tea with milk. It has a fair bit of tannins and moderate astringency so it is a good match for rich foods such as a fry up.
The dry leave are dark to chocolate coloured thin blades scattered with golden tips and smell of raisins and chocolate.
I have brewed this tea twice, both times at around 95*C for 3 minutes.
The first time I used 1 TSP per 225 ml. I found this to be a little bit too much leaf for me so I reduced it to about 3/4 TSP the second time.
The broth is a mahogany toned red.
Using 1 tsp resulted in a scent that is very fruity with cherry and citrus notes. Also present were spice, malt, pastry, milk chocolate and a hint of almond tones.
The tea tastes much heavier than it smells. Malt and cocoa are the first tones, followed by cinnamon with a hint of nutmeg and finishing with citrus opening up to cherry almond tone. There is a hint of a light floral if you hold the tea at the front of the mouth and allow air to move over it. The texture created by tannins and astringency are a little too strong to create a biscuit tone. The tea lends itself well to milk and would complement a fry up ( big greasy breakfast) quite well. As it cools the dark cherry and bitter malt tones blend more elegantly together with the cool floral note appearing lightly on top of it. This is a nice and robust tea and quite strong. Brewed this way this is a nice blend for those who like robust, heavily malty, fruity Assam’s. The tannins really coat your tongue, with this tea.
The tea resteeps nicely with citrus note intensifying and the tea tasting sweeter and and a little spicier.
Using 1 /4 less leaf, the first steep is much sweeter, with stronger cocoa notes and less bitter malt. The tea remains fruity, but the cherry note is less apparent. The flavours blend together well and are less distinct than when more leaf is used. The tannins and astringency are still quite apparent. A sweet tone with tinge of caramel is first apparent over cocoa and malt, with the flavour finishing with spice and a slightly tart fruit tone balanced by warm berry tone.
I must thank both Sil and boychik for their generous samples of this tea. It is a nice blend and makes a nice breakfast tea.

Not to be consumed before breakfast on an empty stomach!
Neither am I, thank goodness as I’ve had times where I’ve existed on nothing else but caffeine:). No food for 16 plus hours, or pushing past those moments you’re so tired you’re freezing…etc
Smokey and smooooooooth. Thank you Boychik!
Zero bitterness and astringency. Not much going on here beyond the smoke though. I think I might prefer it with a touch of maple. I have none of that here at work though so I’ll have to try it that way at home some time :)
Revisiting this one for a nice afternoon pick-me-up. Long steep time but did not get bitter. Slightly astringent but pleasantly so. Raisin notes very apparent this afternoon.
Kind of celebrating because I just let myself order the Damn Fine Holiday blend 2014! Naughty though- I should not spend money on myself this close to Christmas! I did order a 2nd tin to give as a gift to a non-Steepster tea friend though :)
Delicious! Thank you Boychik!
So bold, yet not too astringent or bitter in any way.
I’ve been so impressed with all of the Damn Fine teas so far. It seems you really can’t go wrong with them! Not sure which has been my favorite so far…maybe the Spring Keemun.
Oh I’m do glad you like them. I’m very happy with A&D. I’d say I drank Caravan the most. Just ordered a new tin;)
After yesterday’s weak steep (made more ironic by the fact that this tea came with a badge that says “No Weak Tea” on it), I had another go. I have a .8 finum TeaControl that holds 16 oz. I used 3 hefty teaspoons. There the flavor is!!! This tea is smooth. Michael Bublé smooth. Notes of yam, grain, cocoa and malt blend smoothly like brilliant dance partners, to the point where you almost can’t separate the notes. Is that good? I think that for a morning when I’m not at work and all I want is no dramatics for a change, this tea fills the bill. On an extra note, I truly got a second steep from this tea, which is rare for me. Because I drink only black teas, if it’s watery, I’ll chuck it down the drain. This tea held it’s water for the second steep. Very impressive.
Side note: tin #138 out of 150. If you’re thinking about ordering this tea, might want to consider soon…
Flavors: Cannabis, Cocoa, Grain, Yams
Preparation
Dry, this tea smells light and delicate….it made me wonder if I needed to use 2 teaspoons instead of one, but I went forward with DamnFineTea’s recommendations. Wet, I am getting that cannabis note again, but not as strong as I do with Laoshan Black by Verdant. I smell some sweet potato and a bit of baked grain. Sip! Oh. I should have used 2 teaspoons. Using DFT’s steep recommendations, I’m getting waaaaaaaay more smell than taste, which is quite disappointing…..like when a tray full of great smelling food goes by your table and you haven’t even seen your waitperson yet. What CAN I tell you from my cup? The tea is smooth….not much astringency at this point….and that I have high hopes for my next cup! Sorry, not much info, but if you have this tea, I’d say scoop heavy-handedly! I will revisit soon.

So I am just going to start by saying that Dexter is AMAZING!!! She heard I was exploring straight blacks and next thing I know, I have a whole box of black tea samples to try. It is like my very own educational box and I am so grateful for her generosity and kindness. Thank you Dexter!!!
As for the tea, this is smokey and ashy. It is good though I don’t think this is the type of black I will reach for. The blacks I personally have enjoyed have all been towards the dessert tye flavors with notes of caramel, chocolate, vanilla, and the like. Nonetheless, I really appreciate the opportunity to try something new so once again, thank you Dexter!!
You don’t have to love them all – I sent you a variety with the hopes of you finding what type of black you prefer. There are some chocolate/caramel desserty types in the box. Hope you find a few you like. :))
I really like the A&D teas, but I think this is my least favourite. I only grabbed a tin because I needed a third for my 3 pack and I was curious. :)
This is a pretty OK Earl, although I think I like the EG Cream varieties a bit more. I was a little apprehensive about it since it smelled SO STRONG in the sample bag I had. I had to double bag it. But after the steep it’s just a pretty normal strength. Nice, a bit astringent. I don’t know if it will go on the must have list but I have no issue finishing off the several cups worth of leaf that I have.
Let’s see, the hot tea is starting to make me…hot. So I looked around for a good way to brew up some cold tea, and found some size 4 Tsacs on Ebay cheap. I got 100 of those suckers for $5, shipped. I asked my daughter to pick one of the teas we have a lot of (we have a bunch of 1/4 lb teas from Darlene’s off of Ebay) and she picked Apple Pie. So that will be our first experiment later today.
My mom is coming in tomorrow, which is always sort of a mixed blessing thing. I am really happy to see my mom, but she tends to look around for the ONE thing I haven’t done instead of the million I have done. You know? Like I can make 6 figures a year, own a company, raise two great kids, have a happy marriage, and she still will complain that I need to do X. Whatever. Looking forward to it. Kinda.
I got a sample of this one in the mail yesterday from boychik but I haven’t tried it yet. Have fun experimenting with cold brew!
And good luck with your Mom…
i feel your pain. my mom is the same way, but i think she is learning…my biggest fear not to turn out same way. i think im being too critical of my kids
Happy Canada Day!
I started this morning with a taste test of three A&D tea samples that the most excellent Cavocorax sent me :)
They’re having a free shipping sale today so I knew the time had come to make my decision. I didn’t want to go spend crazy at $20 a pop (and over 4 oz each!!) so I just chose 2 teas to purchase.
I thought originally that I wanted to buy this tea, but ultimately I went with the Red Tailed Hawk which I found really flavourful and different from other teas that I own, (I have no darjeelings at this point) and the Tiger Assam, which makes for an EXCELLENT breakfast tea with milk in it. I know I will get good use out of that one.
This Spring Keemun tea is tasty, bright and fresh, but when I drank it side by side with the other two, it wasn’t QUITE as flavourful, plus there’s the quantity (less tea for the same price). So it didn’t make the cut! Maybe someday I will regret not buying it, but for now I am excited to get my other two in the mail.
I did enjoy this though, and was very happy to sample!
So glad I got to try these first! Or else I wouldn’t have known what to get.
Thanks again, Cavo!!
Yeah, to Canada :)
(I just had to check that you were in fact Canadian so that you wouldn’t be disappointed, haha)
So you getting only two? I think 3 tins is a better value. My other faves are Mt Grey and Caravan. I got a second new tin of Caravan which says a lot. I was drinking it for breakfast almost daily.
I have yet to try any, so now the question is do I take advantage and buy sight unseen and possibly get burned? :) I know, I know, people will take it off my hands. But you know, the budget…
I just bought one. :) I have so many teas that getting something other than Tiger Assam felt foolish.
Ok, so originally I was thinking I would order the Spring Keemun so the 3 pack for $48 was not an option. Then I changed my mind about the Spring but totally forgot about the deal! I ordered Red Tailed Hawk and Tiger Assam and that was it. Then realized my error so they let me add on Mount Grey for an extra $8.
Huzzah!! Hooray for Canada!
Now I feel much better;). Mt Grey is a nice EG even though not that many ppl on Steepster like bergamot.
Awwww crap.
Ok, here’s the deal. I’m exhausted, falling asleep in my chair – which likely has something to do with the HIIT I did this afternoon.
I had a piece of 75% dark chocolate and made this tea, 100 degrees for 5 min.
Took a drink, and was lovingly cradling the cup, inhaling deeply, and enjoying every sip.
To the point where I went to calculate on the website how much it would cost me to get a can.
I can’t even tell you what I was tasting. Both because I’m tired, and also because eating the chocolate first may have messed with my tastebuds. And also I only pretend to sound like I know what I’m talking about, with most things, most of the time.
If this is what Keemun tastes like, I’m IN.
Thank you so much, Cavocorax!!
What a comforting cup. Excited to try more tomorrow.
And it’s $10. To ship a can of this to me. In case you wondered.
keep an eye on their facebook page. A&D DOES do free shipping promos that DO apply to canada as well…
horse face? yes :) i did not buy horsecan….but I did buy spring keemun (times two) i wanted the tin for horsey…but the tea was middle of the road for the shipping/costs benefit of getting that as well lol
“And also I only pretend to sound like I know what I’m talking about, with most things, most of the time.” Hey, me too! That’s been my MO for years
I wanted to order four cans, but didn’t like the shipping and so I facebooked them and asked if they were going to have any shipping deals soon so I could place my order; they sent me a coupon for $10 shipping! Just something to keep in mind in case you decide to stock up on tons of tea!
I have the golden tips. It came with a plastic horse head finger puppet! :)
I had actually considered letting it take a tour with the latest round of the BBBB, just for fun, but I forgot to put it in the box. :)
I’ve only drank it once or twice. I can’t remember, LOL
You could check the reviews. Want me to send you some?
No, that’s ok but thank you :)
I read the reviews and it just seems like everyone is all “it’s not amazing but it’s pretty good” and then they rate in the high 80’s -90’s so I’m just curious as to how it tastes
For a ‘not amazing but pretty good’ Keemun, I’d probably rate around 85-90 too, actually. But that’s because I’m so fond of keemun in general so it just being keemun is worth a LOT of points for me already before I’ve tasted it if you know what I mean. :) It doesn’t take much (in a keemun) to make me do the happy sigh, but it takes a fair bit to completely wow me. :)
@Angrboda – I’m prediposed to love Keemun too, but I have to say this Spring Keemun isn’t my favorite. It’s ok, but I didn’t love it. I was expecting to love it the way Sil loves it and I just didn’t :(
i liked salty element in Spring. i haven’t noticed it in other Keemuns ( but i didnt try that many). I think it makes it kinda unique (for me at least)
MzPriss, I agree. I found it extremely floral and that’s not one of my favourite qualities in keemuns. (or any tea for that matter)
Just for the record, when I said this:
“I read the reviews and it just seems like everyone is all “it’s not amazing but it’s pretty good” and then they rate in the high 80’s -90’s so I’m just curious as to how it tastes”
I was talking about A&D’s Yunnan Golden Tips :)
So do you guys have any keemuns you love and would recommend? It’s probably my next mission, try lots of keemuns
I loved A&D’s Yunnan Golden Tips. But i tried lots of others so its some point it very hard to say this is the best. its very good solid quality tea. And I love gongfu it. i think it shows the best qualities. You lady need a sample. We are all different. you found mushrooms in Special Dark;)
i really like teavivre’s keemuns! a few of them have smokey notes though, not all….as a heads up. To be fair i prefer some of teavivre’s keemuns to the A&D keemun…it was different than i expected it to be, but i’m enjoying it nonetheless
This morning, courtesy of Terri HarpLady, I’m very pleased to review Double Knit Blend by Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea, Western style: 8 oz. / 1 tsp (2.6g) / 212*F / 4 min. without sweeteners, milk, or cream.
Leaf: Thin twisted mostly dark chocolate-brown leaves 2 cm or less
Fragrance: Mild Malty
Liquor: Clear, amber brown
Aroma: Upon removing the lid of the Finum brewing basket, the first concentrated fleeting wiff – oooh, YUM – this is something special! But what is it? Subsequent sniffs required placing one’s nose as close as possible and inhaling deeply in an attempt to appreciate the aroma. A touch of Keemun smokiness blended with malt.
Flavor: Malt & Keemun
4-min: Very pleasant, smooth, and medium-bodied with no astringency or bitterness.
5-min: A rich full-bodied tea, but not as full-bodied as a straight Keemun or an Assam tea, with a touch of bitterness and very slight astringency to be appreciated with, not before, breakfast for anyone with a sensitive stomach.
Re-Steep:
6-min: Light to medium bodied
8-min: Light to medium bodied
Impression: A rich, full-bodied black breakfast blend. I love a great Keemun and that predisposes me to enjoying this tea. The other black tea (others have suggested Darjeeling) that was blended with the Keemun to lighten and brighten this blend, obviously makes it less full-bodied that a straight Keemun. Additionally, if one brews it an additional minute to increase the body, bitterness begins to increase. Perhaps 4.5 minutes may achieve a more optimum balance?
Thanks to Terri HarpLady for sending us this gracious sample.

Mmmm. Good morning!
Baby girl is napping so I made myself a hearty mug of Tiger Assam with a sploosh of 10% cream. I think the last time I had this one I was still on mat leave. It was my regular breakfast tea go to. Still delicious. Malty, raisiny, strong.
I finally finished Gilmore Girls the other day, (so sad it’s over!) and this morning I just started watching a new to me show on Netflix, Broadchurch. My dear friend Netflix knows what I like! Surprised I hadn’t watched it sooner, because David Tennant!
Seems very good. Dark. Dramatic. Compelling. British. Successssss!
Sample sipdown! Yay
I’m copying most of my notes from Red Tailed Hawk in here, it’s corresponding.
Happy Canada Day!

I know I will get good use out of it. It’s simple and awesome. The Spring Keemun is tasty, but when I drank it side by side with the other two, it wasn’t QUITE as flavourful, plus there’s the quantity (less tea for the same price). So it didn’t make the cut!
So glad I got to try these first! Or else I wouldn’t have known what to get.
Thanks again, Cavo!!
Oh dear, round two with this tea and I like it even more now.
A delicious robust breakfast tea with milk!
I may have to order this someday. Sigh.
Thanks to the generous Cavocorax I still have enough left for a cup and I got two good steeps from this one!
Thanks again Cavo :)
Bumping my rating up from 81
It’s SO good in the morning. I recommend it after your little one keeps you up all night and you need a boost!
Glad I sent you enough to fully experiment with it! They’re great teas; it’s just too bad the shipping is a little rough for Canadians.
Another one from Cavocorax :)
I don’t have my tastebuds trained well enough to be able to pick anything out of this, but it’s another one of Andrews and Dunham that I’d wanted to try and I’m happy to have gotten the chance!
It’s a nice strong, black tea….great for breakfast!
I didn’t add anything to it but milk would be divine. Maybe I will add some. Ok I did.
It’s a bold, rich, smooth cup. I’m definitely enjoying it.
If A&D offered smaller sizes and didn’t charge $20 to ship to me, I’d consider ordering some….but I know those are a lot of “ifs”. :)
Thanks again Cavo!!
Another A&D tea that didn’t make the cut for me.
I enjoyed this, but not as much as the others I’ve tried (Spring, Red Tailed Hawk, Tiger Assam). I wanted to love it, because I LOVE the name for some reason, but it didn’t strike me as flavourful as I had expected. Or maybe not the right type of flavours.
I suppose it was a bit smokey, but that didn’t bother me. I guess I didn’t get the delicious malty raisinness that I got from the Tiger Assam.
It wasn’t hard for me to rule this one out! Though I wouldn’t mind trying it again down the road. I think I have enough left for one cup anyhow.
Thanks to Cavocorax for making my recent A&D purchase a no brainer!
A huge thanks and thunderous round of applause for Cavocorax for sending me a package of teas to try out! Such an exciting thing to find in my mailbox today, especially since I hadn’t had my morning tea yet.
As I’ve been wanting to try some A&D teas and she was kind enough to send some samples along, I thought this would be good for breakfast.
So I have no idea what sort of teas this is comprised of, but a smokey note is mentioned.
I did get a tiny whiff of something when I smelled the leaves, but nothing scary.
So I brewed this up at 100 degrees for 4 min, and let it cool, then had a sip (you’re welcome for the play by play – during this time I also had a piece of leftover bacon out of the fridge)
….not sure what to expect, but I ended up enjoying this!
It’s definitely slightly smokey, but in a good way! I especially notice the flavours in my cup after I had a few mouthfuls of breakfast then went back to it. Definitely a hint of astringency at the end, but nothing off putting.
I don’t think I need to own this one, which is good because it’s not cheap and it’s a massive tin!
But thank you to Cavo for letting me try this :)
@Terri – you are wicked. I want that. Except there is a phrase there that does not make sense to me: “leftover bacon”
Well there’s only two of us so if we polished off an entire pack of bacon every Sunday we’d be in trouble :)
Bacon and avocado…mmmmmmm
This morning, courtesy of Terri HarpLady, I’m very pleased to review Spring Keemun by Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea, Western style: 6 oz. / 1 tsp (2.1g) / 212*F / 5 min. without sweeteners, milk, or cream.
Leaf: Thin twisted chocolate-brown curly leaves
Fragrance: Mild Keemun
Liquor: Clear, dark amber
Aroma: Sweet Potatoes, Cocoa
Flavor: Sweet Potatoes, Cocoa
5-min: A very smooth, rich, tea with a honey-like sweetness and strong notes of sweet potatoes and cocoa. This flavor combination reminded me of sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie. There was no smoky aroma or flavor. There was zero bitterness or astringency.
6-min: A very smooth, rich, tea with a honey-like sweetness and deeper more pronounced notes of cocoa over the sweet potatoes. There was zero bitterness or astringency. I prefer the 5-min. infusion.
Re-Steep:
7-min: Moderately full body
8-min: Smooth, rich, fairly sweet and nearly as full-bodied as the initial steep.
Impression: A very smooth, rich, sweet and unique cup of Keemun. It reminded me more of a Yunnan such as Dian Hong. A very good choice for afternoon tea.
Thanks to Terri HarpLady for sending us this gracious sample.

This morning, courtesy of Terri HarpLady, I’m pleased to review Tiger Assam by Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea, Western style: 8 oz / 1 tsp (2.3g) / 212*F / 4 min. without sweeteners, milk, or cream.
Leaf: Thin twisted chocolate-brown, with some gold 1 cm or < in length.
Fragrance: Mild
Liquor: Clear, amber
Aroma: Malty and sweet
Flavor: Malty with a mild sweetness
4-min: A very smooth, bold, rich, mildly sweet, malty Assam. After drinking ½ a cup of this bold Assam on an empty stomach (I know better!) I had the sense that I should eat something right away. A slice each of Wegman’s Marathon Bread and Ancient Grain Bread with Cranberries toasted with Smart Balance Heart Wise Light margarine helped. I then enjoyed two slices of Vermont Bread Co. organic soft multi-grain bread with margarine and Crofter’s Raspberry Organic spread. There was zero bitterness and a very mild sense of astringency. A rather invigorating morning cup
Re-Steep:
4-min: Smooth but not yet full-bodied, so I let it steep longer.
5-min: Light-bodied
6-min: Moderate body
7-min: Moderate body
8-min: Smooth, moderate-bodied.
Impression: A very smooth, bold, rich, and invigorating morning cup to enjoy with your breakfast. Well done!

Glad you like it. As a general rule, I can never drink Ceylon or Darjeeling teas on an empty stomach, or green, white, or puerh teas either. Sometimes I can get away with an Assam, but usually not.
I think that’s one of the reasons I love Chinese blacks so much, as they don’t usually have that effect on me.
Yes, I did. Thanks! Agreed, Chinese black teas appear to be much easier on the stomach. I’m now having a cup of Raspberry Greek yogurt to further settle my stomach.
Thanks brother! With 4 elderly parents from 85 to almost 96 years old, it’s taken awhile to rack up the first 100, but they make sure we’re not bored!
I like reading your notes. They are very precise. What do you do for living? You must be a scientist.
boychik, My experience focused on preventing cardiovascular disease as opposed to physicians who routinely save lives.
