drank Chocolate by Harney & Sons

The fragrance to this is just divine. And the tea really does taste like chocolate – but to my taste buds, it’s like one of those “midnight dark” chocolates that are this close to tasting like baker’s chocolate. I do love dark chocolate, but not that dark. Objectively, I think it’s probably a nice tea if you do love that earthy, superdark, almost espresso taste – I just happen to really dislike it. Accordingly, I don’t want to give it a number value because it seems rude to mark it low just because it isn’t to my taste, when I think it’s a fine tea. I’d probably give it about a 15 on my personal scale, though.

Flavors: Coffee, Dark Chocolate, Earth, Espresso

Preparation
Boiling 3 min, 15 sec 3 tsp 18 OZ / 532 ML

drank Creamsicle by Joy's Teaspoon

I had high hopes but this one didn’t thrill me. It was fine, but maybe it almost mimicked a creamsicle too well – as someone below noted, creamsicles are supposed to be cold! It was orangey and creamy, and yes, reminiscent of Triaminic too, lol. So…it did what it claimed to do, I just didn’t love it.

Flavors: Cream, Orange

drank Berry Earl Grey by Joy's Teaspoon

I’m in love! I like Earl Grey teas, but have a hard time finding one that’s the right balance for me. This is a very smooth but strong black tea with definite berry and bergamot. It doesn’t have the perfumy flavor that bergamot sometimes has (and I don’t really care for), but it’s still clearly bergamot. The berry (raspberry?) balances it quite nicely. I like it with a bit of sugar, and it’s fine with or without milk. I thought I was done with tea orders for now, but…well…

Flavors: Bergamot, Raspberry

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 30 sec 2 tsp 10 OZ / 295 ML

This is a soft lemon, no sourness at all. The comparison to lemon cake is apt, but it’s lighter and lovelier. Perhaps it’s the almond making the difference, as I don’t recall having a lemon tea with almond before. I do agree this one gets better as it cools, which is great for me as I tend to like my “hot” tea kind of lukewarm anyway, lol. I’ve not had actual macarons, but I think comparing it to a lemon Madeleine is pretty close. Anyway, I just wish these folks were still around, as I finished off my stash of it last night. :( (PS, I agree with the person who said that measuring this one was impossible! Long white leaves just don’t fit in a teaspoon!)

Flavors: Almond, Cake, Floral, Lemon

Preparation
180 °F / 82 °C 3 min, 15 sec 4 tsp 20 OZ / 591 ML

drank Lime Marshmallow by Butiki Teas

The people who described this as a powdered sugar covered lime cookie were pretty spot on. It is a lime candy scent, although I don’t find it to be a sweet tea. I think my tastebuds are a little off as I usually get a peculiar bitterness when I drink white teas, and maybe that offsets the sweetness for me in this one. (It isn’t an unpleasant bitterness, but it’s there.) The lime wasn’t overpowering but was definitely present – it wasn’t sour at all, just somehow limey without the tang. I really enjoyed drinking it, but it left a weird aftertaste in my mouth so it wasn’t my favorite.

Flavors: Lime, Powdered sugar

Preparation
205 °F / 96 °C 3 min, 30 sec 4 tsp 18 OZ / 532 ML

drank Decaf Paris by Harney & Sons

This was one of the better decaf teas I’ve tried. It had that perfumed flavor of bergamot, but definitely also the vanilla and brighter citrus flavors backed by a solid, not overly astringent black tea.

Flavors: Astringent, Bergamot, Citrus, Floral, Vanilla

Boiling 4 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 12 OZ / 354 ML

drank Rum Raisin Biscotti by Tea Forte

Gah! This one actually smelled rather nice, like almonds and cookies and fruity – sort of a fruitcake scent, now that I think about it. There was even a bit of a floral fragrance. BUT the flavor was horrid! It had the biting sting of alcohol – I’m guessing that’s the “rum” flavoring – and really not much else. I rarely find a tea I cannot drink, but this was one. (NB, I’m only noting alcohol in the scent/taste box, because that flavor was so nasty I don’t really want to give the nice fragrance any credit.)

Flavors: Alcohol

drank Mint Tilleul by Harney & Sons

This was a free sample, and worth drinking, but nothing special. It was no better than plenty of less expensive grocery store options, and honestly, worse than some! Drinkable, yes, but I wouldn’t buy more of it. If you like mint without being overpowered by it, this could be a good option.

Flavors: Peppermint

Preparation
Boiling 8 min or more

Oh, look, one more person who got this as a sample! I can definitely taste cinnamon and vanilla, along with that woody background of red rooibos. It’s nice enough, I’m just not really a red rooibos fan. But the balance of the cinnamon and vanilla was nice, so if you like red rooibos, this one is nice.

Flavors: Candy, Cinnamon, Vanilla, Wet wood

205 °F / 96 °C 7 min, 0 sec

Bio

Wife, mom of 2 crazy young kids (and 3 cats, if they count). Used to be a professional tree hugger, now I stay at home hobbit-like and teach the kids to love the trees. Also hobbit-like, I love reading, tea, second breakfasts, cooking and food in general, and gardens. (I can’t really say I love gardening since where I live, it’s too dratted hot for too much of the year to actually do it.) I am always on the search for a good flavored decaf black tea. Suggestions are more than welcome!

I tend to like my teas strong, so I use more than most people when I brew. Don’t be put off a tea because I say I used 4 tsp to brew 12 oz or something – that’s just me.

PS – Unlike a hobbit, my toes are not furry. I just feel the need to clarify.
