424 Tasting Notes
Drinking this was such an odd experience for me. My brain and my taste buds were constantly at war.
I don’t like coffee, in any way, shape or form. OK, I like the smell, but that’s it. So I read and read about mate in general and about this tea in particular, and it had such good reviews that I had to give it a try.
So I was measuring it into my infuser and Brain goes, “Boy that looks a little like it will taste like coffee.” I kept going.
Then as it was infusing, Brain goes again, “Smells a little like coffee.” So I put a little creamer in my mug to make it more like chocolate malted milk.
Then I took a drink, and it really didn’t taste much like coffee at all. But I kept having to talk myself into enjoying it.
Things got weird then, because before every drink Brain would say again, “It’s going to taste like coffee” even though I had already tasted it! Then I would drink it, and it didn’t.
After this cup I was exhausted from the argument and I went back to bed.
But really, it wasn’t bad!
Love how your brain is arguing with you on this one even when you knew it wasn’t going to taste like coffee. This is probably one my Hubby would enjoy. I like the occasional coffee, but not too strong and usually with yummy stuff added !
Confession: this is my first Whispering Pines tea.
Wow. Interestingly, it brewed up very dark, like a black tea.
This tea felt like a hug in the middle of the woods. I could smell the trees, the campfire, and the fresh air. The taste was a bit cinnamon, a bit of wood (but not in a rooibos way), a little berry. Comfort in a cup.
Another from “ATTB”. This is nice, nothing that is making me do a jig, but a nice strong black tea. Due to DeliriumsFrogs I am watching/reading (it’s subtitled) The Returned on Netflix today while I sip this and do laundry.
Oooh, what do you think of the show? We have two episodes left, and I’m not sure where it’s headed…wondering if I’ll like how they wrap up the season.
I really do love the cast, though.
Yet another from “Another Tiny Tea Box” – reading past reviews, I think this tea is well traveled! Initially it wasn’t so bad, just a really apple-y chamomile. But the more I drank the more thirsty I felt, and it wasn’t because the tea was astringent. It was really odd. I ended up not finishing it and chugging a lot of milk straight from the jug. Yeah, I’m that girl.
Another one added by Dustin and from “Another Traveling Tea Box.” I really liked this one and am going to keep the rest (mua ha ha!) So far I am only keeping two so I don’t feel so bad, and I’m adding a bunch. This was a nice fruity black, not super strong like someone else said, or maybe I just like them super strong. I didn’t get the super astringency either. Oh well, the whole purpose of the box is to get teas into the hands of people with different tastes, right?
I admit, I had to try this just because of the novelty of it. And, the reviews were so glowing. Thank you Dustin for including it in “Another Traveling Tea Box!”
I liked it! I started out with a little sugar and definitely got warm, cozy applesauce. I took another reviewer’s idea and added both salt and sugar at the same time, and it brought out the potato a bit while still keeping the apple. Really interesting, and really nice.
However, I’m not going to keep the rest of the sample, even though there is quite a bit there, because I think this tea is just unusual enough that everyone should have a chance at trying it, so it’s going back into the box but I really recommend tasting it!
In other news, I had some crazy dreams last night. The last one was that I was Beyonce, and someone was trying to kill me, but I was just trying to get all of my make up on.
This tea is savoury delicious!
The dream is hilarious! (If you don’t get kill in the end that is…if you do, well… at least you can say you died in a beautiful way???)
Oh there was so much more to it! It was one of those where I woke up this morning and then went back to sleep, and when I woke up again I was a drooling, disoriented mess. I went to make tea and put sugar in my infuser instead of my cup! But at one point in the dream I was in a big restroom stall, and it had a sink and mirror in it (weird) and I kept trying to put makeup on, but the door to the stall wouldn’t close all the way and I kept having to kick it closed and people were sticking their heads in and stuff. Really strange. I rarely wear makeup in real life (think weddings and funerals) so it’s even all the more funny.
Crazy Dream!
This tea has always looked interesting to me. Haven’t placed a Butiki order yet and not sure I would order it w/o trying it first. My be on my sample list when I do order though..
Hahaha, that reminds me of the Saturday Night Live skit the Beygency. Did you see that one? http://www.hulu.com/watch/631154
From “Another Traveling Tea Box” – there was just a tiny bit of this in there, but since it was Butiki I had to try it. I am not very good at picking out flavors, so I was sitting there going…what does this taste like? Then I looked it up here and it was so obvious, honey! Really strong, yummy honey. Not so much on the resteep, but the first cup was really lovely.
I admit, I wanted to try this due to all of the hype here. This was my first Lupicia tea, first green rooibos, and first melon tea. I went into the cup a bit skeptical that I would become a Golden Honeydewite. Thank you Dustin for the sample!
I was wrong. This was amazing. With every drink I kept thinking, how do they do that?
A few years ago we had some family visit from Denmark, and we bought a huge watermelon and ate it out on the deck. There was no watermelon before or after that compared to this melon. It has been years and we still talk about it. It is the melon that all others must measure up to. You know how you were in college and you partook in certain things and the food you ate was THE BEST FOOD EVER? (Not that I ever did, smirk), that’s the caliber of watermelon.
The watermelon tangent is just to say, if that had been the best honeydew ever, the one that has no match, this is the tea made from that melon. It’s like melon crack.
I took a leap of faith a few days ago and ordered 100g of it, can’t wait! Reading your review, I don’t think I took a big risk, I’m sure I will love it as well :-)
I loved your story, it reminds me of my aunt, she used to grow small watermelons in the summer. Before serving them, she’d put them in the freezer for a while, cut them in half and we would eat our half with a spoon, sitting in the sun on the grass, watermelon between our legs, the best!

Im so happy you like it!
Yeah, it’s really good this one…
