521 Tasting Notes
A family member acquired a box of medicinal tea while on their travels in Sweden. They brought this back for me, because they know how much I love tea. This box (named Bad Heilbrunner) has been sitting towards the back of my cupboard for some time. I am beginning to come down with something, so I decided to bust it out. The entire box is in Swedish. There is not one english syllable on the whole thing. I am guessing, since its herbs, to brew high temp for a long time. As a side note, there is a warning paper included inside the box, which I found kinda amusing. I hope this stuff works.
The brew smells of an odd variety. I can note at hay, lemon, vine, honey, and some sort of menthol root. The flavor is incredibly herbaceous. It has strong grass flavor like Yerba Mate, but this is followed by a calming mouthfeel. I can feel a slight tingle travel across my body. The flavor reminds me of a zoo in the middle of summer. It has a desert flavor to it. I can note at dust, roots, earth, dried grass, and a slight hard fruit. Its a very exotic taste. I like it and figers are crossed this stuff beats the sickness out of me.
Flavors: Dust, Earth, Herbaceous, Taro Root

Wow! This is fantastic! Thank you Marzipan for supplying me with this treat.
I love oolongs. I I love the sheer variety of this type of tea. This one reminds me of Blue Mountain Twirl by Davids Tea but waaaayy better! I opened the small package and took a peek at my new present. The leaves were small black, gold, and purple tendrils of roots. They varied in length and size but were beautiful. They had a distinct apricot and honey scent. I knew that it was going to be amazing! I brewed these dark tentacles in my glass gaiwan. I rinsed them once to release their essence. The aroma was sheer joy! It has a rough smoky scent, like that of black maple syrup and burnt sugar. This dark mist is then under-toned with a sweet floral quality. The initial sip was heaven! It carries a smooth mouth-feel that fully engulfed my taste buds. I could taste maple wood, tobacco, buckwheat honey, and apricot. This was an amazing tea. It has a lot of depth and complex flavors. This had the consistent sweet dark honey falvor as Blue Mountain Twirl only more intensified and these flavors lasted multiple steeps. I was able to pull seven good heavy steeps from my gaiwan. The flavors moved in a curve. They began hearty and bold and smoothed out to a neutral base only to rise up with a sweet tone.
This is a wonderful brew, and I’m sorry to hear the company has closed down. I love that , through the connections with other tea enthusiasts, I am still able to enjoy a companies product even long after they have disappeared. It just goes to show a company can live on with the right products :)
P.S. This makes Tasting note 100! I have finally reached the triple digits. Next stop. Quad digits!

Congrats on 100!
Do you mean Blue Mountain Twirl (it came out at the same time as Yellow Gem). It’s one of my all time fave teas and your comparison makes me want to try this one, and sad that it’s discontinued.
Thank you! Anilina that is actually what I meant. I haven’t had it for awhile, so I must have mixed up the name in my mind xD
Thank you Blodeuyn for this delicious present!
I am not a fan of bagged tea at all. This is the one area of tea where my “tea snobbery” comes out prominently. I don’t like being a snob, so I’m trying to change that. I was given this as a surprise present. I have never brewed anything in a “silken sachet.” I thought it was very elegant and unique. I brewed this in my night mug before dinner to calm me down a little. The aroma of this sachet is amazing. I poured my steaming water over it and the sweet aroma of Thai delicacies filled the air. This brew has a dominant silky vanilla tone with coconut beefing up behind it. If I sat and took a long inhale I could taste the lemon undertone. The flavor is a calm fresh ginger. It goes down real smooth and is actually helping my sore throat out a bit. The green tea adds a grassy base for all these flavors to sit atop of. I enjoyed this, and I think i might actually like tea bags. Might. haha.

Good morning! This is the winner from the teas that I picked up! I’m not saying that this brew is perfect or anything, but it does make for a great everyday black. The thick coffee liquor is sweet and slightly spiced. This is a light and bright black tea. There is a slight black tobacco flavor with smoke. These flavors may not sound all that light, but there is a underlining floral tone. This undertone brightens up the whole drink and makes for a great morning cup.The only problem I have is it becomes slightly astringent, but I’m sure I can tweak the brewing and fix that right up! I have found my staple for the cupboard :)

I am finally home and picked this to wind down before the day must begin again. My favorite aspect of white tea is its colour. I absolutely love the iridescent pearl glow this tea brews. I always brew white tea in my glassware, so I can show off these beauties. The glass practically disappears and it magically distorts its surroundings. hahah I just love it! I know that this isn’t the best Bai Hao Yin Zhen, but it does hold its own. Its a very nice and general brew. Its dependable to say the least. The dry buds may not be porcelain diamonds; they do have some darker colors and mudded feel. This is still a simply enticing brew. It has a light honey flavor with a wisp of floral. It gives you a smooth nectar mouthfeel and finishes with warm hay. I enjoy it and always have. This is a great buy and it has always been my white tea staple.
Flavors: Floral, Honey, Hot hay

This morning I need something a little more bold. I brewed this up in my morning mug. It has the all too familiar malt aroma. I added a little extra leaves for that bonus kick to get me going. This tea has a lot of flavor. It has a smooth baked bread with malt in the background. There is a slight astringency in the undertone. The taste is a perfect morning brew. It paired well with my big breakfast and its perfect to soothe and energize me for the coming day.

I usually don’t buy cups of tea; because I have never had a decent experience with them. I guess I was feeling “adventurous” last night. I traveled to Rochester, NY to celebrate St. Pattys day with a few friends. We ended up in several coffee shops (this being the only one that could tell me what company its tea came from) and I dipped into a few varieties. I enjoyed this very much and they used an immense amount of leaves too. The aroma was a strong citrus menthol, but the flavor was quite calm. It had a strong taste of deep earth and dark wood. I could only note at a slight bergamot and camphor flavor. This was a smooth drink and it warmed me up.
As a side note: this tea came from a company based not to far from where I grew up. I found it kind of amazing that even though I’m this far from home; I can still be reached by small reminders :)
Flavors: Dark Wood, Lemongrass

Good morning! I celebrated St. Pattys day in the “city” last night, so I managed to make a trip to Wegmans. I didn’t like using my decent Darjeeling as my everyday black, so I picked up various blacks. I’m testing to see which is the right fit. This is the first runner up.
The tea is described as a champagne from Sri Lanka. The dry leaves look like curled rubies. They have a blood red appearance with small black wisps. The dry aroma is smooth and mellow. I put a generous teaspoon into my mug and brewed. The scent from my mug is very light and fruity. Its a warm soaked earth with dark fruit tones. The taste is pretty similar. Its a slightly roasted mouthfeel, and it has a dark leather flavor. This brew is mostly silky except for slight astringency. I like this as a late morning brew. I’m not sure it has enough kick to wake me up these early mornings.
Flavors: Dark Wood, Leather, Wet Earth

Thank you blodeuyn for this perfect sample!
I heard about Port from various tea friends and was intrigued by the name. I then saw that the company had named this its “greatest achievement”, so I knew I needed it in my life, hahah. Luckily, a tea friend came to my rescue, again, and I was able to indulge in this discovery.
This is truly the most unique blend I’ve ever had. I peer through my package at the strange assortment of leaves. I can spot long ceder with creeping black tendrils surrounding it. Then, scattered about this smokey mixture are small wisps of fiery saffron. I opened my small pouch to inhale. I am tantalized with an array of scents. It reminds me of this old italian shoppe my father used to take me to when I was younger. I remember in the back room there were large wooden casks filled with wine and various liquor. The room had an enticing erie scent. I used to just stand back there to inhale the soft wooden aroma. I remember there being a light leather scent in the background. I class this aroma as pure ethnic. I am already flooded with memories and can’t wait to brew. I pour my steaming spring water over these dry leaves and it hit with a slight sizzle. I can describe the scent as if one of the casks in the back room of that italian shoppe had burst open. My tea room was flooded with a deep cedar smell covered by brandy and wine. It had a slight undertone of a robust vanilla. The liquor was a golden brown with a tinge of crimson. I took a sip of this aromatic beverage and was greeted with a smooth wood tone and hearty vanilla. It calmed my tongue and left me with an eucalyptus feel. I drank heartly and whisked my mind away back to that italian shoppe. My favorite attribute of good tea is its ability to let you travel. I enjoy being able to travel across the globe without even leaving my tea room. I’m not sure if others do this, but I do. This is another superb blend by this company! I’m very happy I was able to experience it.

This was included in my Yunomi order :)
I decided I should try out some warm water steeping for this, so I gave it a shot. I ripped open this package to take in my surprise. I pour out some astonishing long emerald shards. They vary in color from forest green to a lime topaz. The aroma of these leaves is pure vegetal. This tea evokes growth! I prepare my kyusu for a pleasant brew. The first steeping was a translucent nectar. The syrup was softly sweet with notes of light grass. This brew carried a bright spring scent of a vegetable garden in full swing. The next subsequent brews gained more and more depth. This drink became grassy and full of umami. I was able to get four steepings from these leaves (which is a lot for japanese sencha). I love this tea and I cant wait for this years harvest!
