1758 Tasting Notes

Thought I’d try something from the Sheng Olympics this morning. This was an overall nice tea. It had only a little bitterness early on and a bit of astringency. Both of these got replaced by a sweet note that I am not sure how to describe. Maybe apricots is still applicable or maybe this tea has moved on from the apricots of a young sheng. The note is hard to place. This tea did become quite nice though.

I steeped this 14 times in a 150ml gaiwan with 7.4g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, 2 min, 2.5 min, and 3 min. This tea would probably have gone a couple more steeps but I had had enough tea at 14 steeps.

Drank this again and got the water ratio better if not right. I used three matcha scoops of matcha to approximately 10 to 12 oz of water. What I got is a nice tasting blend of vegetal, grassy, and sweet. It is a very nice matcha if not cheap. It tastes quite good.

Bought this quite a while ago and am just getting around to trying it. It got lost among my puerh but got found last night. This is a fairly nice tasting ripe puerh. I agree with Rich that it is an earthy, woodsy type of puerh, although the fermentation flavor eventually faded and a nice sweet note was left behind. Not sugar sweet, hard to describe but it is good.

I steeped this tea twelve times in a 160ml Solid Silver teapot with 14.7g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min. It would have gone a few more steeps, the leaves were not done yet but I was.

This is a relatively nice puerh as they go. It was good but not what I would call spectacular. It is good enough to warrant drinking again. It started out bitter sweet with a fair amount of fermentation flavor left. There was nothing unpleasant about the fermentation flavor. This puerh needs another five to ten years to fully clear in my opinion. After a time the bitter note disappeared and a sweet note emerged. Not sure what to call the sweet note.

I brewed this twelve times ini a 160ml Solid Silver Tea Pot with 14.2g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min. I could get a couple more steeps out of these leaves but not too many.

This tea was not too bad for a cheap sheng that I didn’t even order. The company offered this as a substitution for one I ordered that they were out of stock on. Overall this tea was neither terrible or fantastic. It was bitter in the early infusions with the bitterness starting to disappear in the third steep and being mostly gone by the fifth steep. However a bitter aftertaste remained. The tea did develop a sweet note that I am not sure how to characterize but maybe apricots. On the whole I cannot recommend this seller. I ordered about 3 kg of tea on 11/11. The first tracing number they gave me worked but unfortunately they had given me another customer’s number and it was delivered to Boston. The next two tracking numbers never worked and they said that China Post had lost them. They finally sent me two tracking numbers that worked. One package was delivered six weeks after ordering. The other is expected today, about seven weeks after ordering. In truth I don’t know whether they did ship the packages and they were lost in the mail or if they waited a full month to ship them. I tend to think they waited a full month to ship my order. So while this tea wasn’t bad I still can’t recommend it because I have no confidence in the seller that sold it.

It has been a long time since I have had this puerh. The last time I had it was so long ago it was before I was brewing gongfu style. This is a really good tea with a sweet note from the beginning and little bitterness. A slight bitterness crept in in about the third steep after the tea had opened up. Only lasted about two steeps. There was a fair amount of fermentation flavor to this tea. It needs another five or six years of aging in truth. The fermentation taste was not unpleasant or fishy in nature. If I had to describe the sweet notes to this tea in one word it would be dates but it really is more than that. The sweet note changed over time. I am glad I bought three or four of these teas when they were only $65. Now it goes for $100. Still I think for any big fan of ripe puerh it is worth the cost. Aside from ripe teas that purepuer gets $400 or $550 for this is probably their best ripe. I really should drink it more often. I am tempted to buy another one to compare my storage with Larry’s storage at purepuer. I find myself wondering if the one stored in California has lost more of it’s fermentation taste. Overall, this is one of my favorite puerhs. Larry at www.purepuer.com doesn’t have the largest selection of teas but I have found has teas range from excellent to phenomenal. This one I think qualifies as phenomenal. I steeped this twelve times and if I wanted to go back for more I am sure, judging by the color of the tea in the twelfth steep that I could get at least four more steeps out of it. And I may do just that.

I steeped this twelve times in a 160ml Solid Silver teapot with 14.6g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, 1.5 min, and 2 min.

This is quite a good ripe puerh. It was somewhat bittersweet at the start. This lasted about three steeps. There was a fair amount of fermentation flavor to it. But this was neither unpleasant or fishy. I short this was a very good tea with a lot of sweet notes.

drank Creme Caramel Rooibos by DAVIDsTEA
1758 tasting notes

Bought two ounces of this in store a couple of weeks ago. The first thing I notice is the slightly herbacious taste of the red rooibos. The notes of creme and caramel are primarily in the background but are present. It is relatively tasty but I prefer green rooibos to red rooibos. I think it would be better blended with green rooibos.

I brewed this one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 3 tsp leaf and 200 degree water for 5 minutes.

I am Allan. I live and work in Long Island, New York. I have been amassing a tea collection for nearly two years and have spent way too much money. I now try to buy mostly Puerh as I like it most and it lasts nearly forever. Black tea has a habit of going bad. If anyone is interested in tea swaps I am open to ideas and have quite a cupboard.
