I think I used a little too much tea and brewed this at the wrong temperature. It is sweet and a little bitter. It i somewhat astringent. It is a strong Ceylon tea. I brewed this western style for 3 min with boiling water in an 18 oz teapot. I used 3 tsp leaf.

It came out far too strong. I have noticed that some teas demand to be steeped with less tea. I will try this one again with 200 degree water and 2 tsp of leaf for an 18 oz cup and see what I get.

It has the strong flavor of strawberries.

This is a good tea. It is not the very best but highly enjoyable. It still has some fermentation flavor left but is maturing well. It is slightly sweet and slightly earthy. It is not bitter. I was occupied with baking a loaf of gluten free bread tonight so this did not get the full gongfu treatment it deserves. I brewed this four times in a 10 oz tea steeping mug. I used 10g of leaf and boiling water. I steeped it for 15 sec, 15 sec, 15 sec, and 15 sec over several hours. This is one I would buy again per say but probably never would actually get around to it. There are so many other teas I want to try but it is worth buying again.

This tea has a lot of complex notes to it but I was not paying enough attention to discern what they were.

Bought this a while ago and am just now getting to trying it. I was better than I expected, but then again I expected something absolutely horrific. This tea is overly floral with an slightly unpleasant grassy aftertaste. I admit I bought it purely for the novelty factor of an American green tea. They need to improve this at the Charleston Tea Plantation. They have about 1600 years of catching up to do before they are equal to the Chinese.

I brewed this western style for 3 min with 3 tsp leaf in an 18 oz teapot with 175 degree water.

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 3 min, 0 sec 3 tsp 18 OZ / 532 ML

This tea is excellent. It is malty and slightly sweet. I vaguely detect some chocolate notes underneath the malt. There is very little bitterness. The overriding characteristic is the malt flavor, by this I do not mean chocolate malt flavor but that strong tea flavor often referred to as malt.

I brewed this western style with 2 tsp of leaf with 200 degree water in an 18 oz teapot for 3 min.

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 18 OZ / 532 ML

This is without a doubt the best ripe Menghai Tea Factory tea I have ever drank with the possible exception of the 2008 Song of Chi Tse. It is slightly earthy in the early infusions with notes of chocolate mixed in. It has a slightly bitter character and just slightly sour character in the early infusions too. By about the fifth steeping it loses all of its earthiness and you have the pure flavor of the tea underneath. All the bitterness, however slight, and that subtle sour taste disappears by the fifth infusion too. At this point I started to notice a distinct taste that could be described as either plum or dates notes. Its hard to put an exact description on it.

I used 8g of leaf in a 200ml Yixing teapot with boiling water. I first steeped it for 15 sec. This was a slight oversteep so I then gave it 10 sec, 10 sec, 10 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 15 sec, and 15 sec. This tea did not need long steepings throughout the eight times I steeped it. The aroma of the spent leaves was intense and had an almost chocolate like character, but not exactly.

I bought this tea from Yunnan Sourcing. The last time I looked they had two or three left. I bought three and wish I could have afforded a tong.

I was wrong about Yunnan Sourcing having a couple left, they sold out.

Rich

Wish I could bring myself to buy one of these, but they are crazy expensive!

AllanK

Yes, but crazy good too.

AllanK

Yunnan Sourcing has run out but you may be able to find it on Ebay, or perhaps Dragon Tea House.

This tea is better than I was somehow expecting. It is malty and slightly sweet. It is not bitter. I can taste no astringency. It is a good value for the price.

I brewed this once in an 18 oz teapot with 2 tsp leaf and 200 degree water for 3 min.

Flavors: Malt

This is an excellent tea that is just a step behind the 2014 Wild Monk in quality. It was most enjoyable. I steeped it six times in a 140 ml Yioxing teapot with boiling water and 5g of leaf. I gave it one rinse and steeped it for 10 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 30 sec. 30 sec, and 1 min. There was only a hint of bitterness in some of the early infusions and it was fairly smooth throughout. At one point I noticed a note that I would describe as a plum note. I had hoped for something as good as the Wild Monk but not quite. Still, it was one of the best raw puerhs I have had.

This one has changed the minds of many a nay sayer.

AllanK

The tea that made me really like sheng was the 2014 Wild Monk.

The Monk is good stuff. I think my turning was Misty Peaks and I have gone from there.

This tea was quite good. It rates highly in comparison to other oolongs I have had in this class. There were some subtle chocolate notes and a strong oolong taste that I am not sure I can describe. There was a little bit of bitterness. While I didn’t get tea drunk it was very relaxing. I purchased it locally from the biggest tea store on Long Island (at least in the number of teas biggest), Clipper Ship Tea Company. I am not sure I would buy it again simply because I thought it somewhat overpriced at $12 for 46g of tea. They sell the tea by the number of “cups”, not by weight. It is this one quirk of an otherwise great store with lots of great tea and teaware. They have not website but you can buy their teas over the phone if you want.

I brewed this tea five times in a large gaiwan, about 180ml. I used 7g of leaf. I used 190 degree water. I gave the tea a 10 sec rinse. I then brewed it for 10 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 15 sec and 30 sec. There were distinct chocolate notes and that was the main note I identified when I switched from suger to fresh raspberries and honey for steepings three and four. I went back to sugar for the last steeping.

I like this tea a lot but am annoyed that I only realized after I got it home and weighed it that it was only 46g. Had I known the price when I bought it I would probably not have batted an eye.

Allan, thats not expensive for good DHP

AllanK

It was more that they charge by the cup not telling you how much you get. With some blends a 30 cup package fills a tin, with others not so much. I thought I was getting more than I got because they have a slightly deceptive packaging by selling “30 cups” instead of “4 ounces” or “2 ounces”. If I had been told I was getting less than their usual “30 cups” of tea I would not have been so annoyed. I think the counter girl just accidentally forgot to take off for the packaging and didn’t want to admit it when I called about it.

AllanK

In other words, they probably added the weight of the packaging, that would bring it up in weight to their usual “30 cup” size.

AllanK

Where do you get this Rou Gui Da Hong Pao?

AllanK

Nevermind, not paying attention

AllanK

When I was at Clipper Ship Tea they said they are supposed to be getting a 5 yr old loose sheng in and finally Puerh cakes. I bought their last puerh cake about two years ago and it started my on an odyssey. If you get a chance to get their Boychik they may again have Puerh cakes.

Otherwise, if I see anything interesting I could forward it to you. They have a sale on today and tomorrow. Buy one pack of tea get the next half off. I don’t think you need a coupon for this one.

This tea is decent but not great. It has the flavor of cinnamon, chocolate, cloves and other spices. I picked it not because I love it but because I am trying to avoid caffeine tonight and a rooibos blend seemed ideal. I would recommend it to anyone who loves chacolate, rooibos, and chai.

This tea is ok, not great, but decent. It is somewhat floral, somewhat bitter, and somewhat sweet with bitter slightly overriding the other flavors. I only bought an ounce of this as I don’t always like white tea. I brewed this with the recommended amount of leaf, about 6 tsp in an 18 oz teapot for 1 min at 175 degrees.

Hi Allen – Give that a shot with a much longer infusion, maybe 3-4 minutes to start.

I am Allan. I live and work in Long Island, New York. I have been amassing a tea collection for nearly two years and have spent way too much money. I now try to buy mostly Puerh as I like it most and it lasts nearly forever. Black tea has a habit of going bad. If anyone is interested in tea swaps I am open to ideas and have quite a cupboard.
