658 Tasting Notes
Being sick with a lingering cold but craving ice cream last night equalled my making matcha frozen yogurt with strawberries using this tasty stuff. Highly recommended. I was hoping eating that (I put rather a lot of matcha in) would help me wake up cured but it hasn’t yet.
This is a cool tea! It actually tastes like cake. I can taste that rich, savoury sweetness you get in a good carrot cake. I’m really glad this one wasn’t a disappointment after going for a whole tin of it on a whim! It’s sweet but nicely earthy so not overbearing. The apple and carrot get along very harmoniously here, and the coconut is nice and sweetly toasty.
I meant to make some carrot cake muffins tonight but I’m not feeling up to it, so this is a nice stand-in. And when I make the muffins, hopefully tomorrow, I’m definitely going to try infusing the recipe’s coconut oil with this!
Alright, I gave this another go and this time with some coconut milk. And, I’m glad I did! It’s grown on me. After a long day of volunteering at a busy event with a ridiculous cold (it’s SEPTEMBER) and when I need to unwind so I can be refreshed for another charity event in the morning, it’s hitting the spot (and helping me rehydrate, hopefully). Sweet, subtle, creamy. I’m finally getting some of the buttercream with the milky addition, though each sip seems to alternate between buttercream and chamomile taking precedence.
Another of my spoils from London that I saved for a few months after my trip. This is delicious! I was a bit apprehensive because after being initially enamored with Mulberry Magic from DT, I’ve decided I might not like it so well after all, finding it too overpoweringly sweet. But, this last night after dinner this proved to be what I wish Mulberry Magic was! Really aromatic and rich, this is nutty and roasty and earthy with a bit of fruitiness that makes me think of dates.
Blech! What went wrong with this one? It smelled delicious in its innocent little baggy, but brought about a decidedly murky-looking and -tasting cup. I could smell the mulberries and the caramel but I couldn’t taste either. The spice was definitely upfront but it wasn’t a good kind of spice. Just muddled and a bit dirty-tasting.
I steeped this one for somewhere in the suggested time range, which I don’t normally do. I was scared of it lacking flavour so went with the longer suggested time, but a hint of bitterness tells me I should have gone with my gut and kept it shorter. Hopefully that will improve this!
I was fully prepared to be underwhelmed by this one from the fall collection, too, but it turns out I’m quite the fan! This is really tasty. It smells just like apple cider but I was pleasantly surprised to realize that the taste is more than that. Like LiberTEAS pointed out in her note, it’s not just cinnamon-apple; they do get a comforting pastry flavour in there. As a side note, there is something unique about DT’s cinnamon teas and they all remind me of Pumpkin Chai since it was one of the first teas I had from them. I remember smelling Mamma Mia and thinking of Pumpkin Chai, weirding out the salesperson. I don’t know anything about cinnamon, but I wonder if they use a specific type.
They make a big deal about their Saigon Chai being Saigon Cinnamon based. I wonder if they use that one in all of them?
This is pretty good but I don’t think it warrants a re-purchase. It took me a long time to understand that I’m not really a fan of peach flavours or scents. I love peaches so much that this seemed odd, but the peach teas I’ve had always seem to have a bit of a plasticy taste. This is less like that, and more enjoyable. It comes out nice and creamy thanks to the yogurt drops, and it smells divine. I didn’t really notice the suggestion of icing this so mine was hot.
So, yesterday was a trip to Stratford that involved great theatre but also a lot of money in gas, a pair of shoes I don’t really need, and taking advantage of the rare opportunity to buy this tea even though I really, really don’t need to be paying $18.50 for 100g of tea. But, I have to think it was worth it. The pretty black tin helped me wake up this morning, looking forward to making it to take to work. Unfortunately the lid for the steeping basket of my Breville has gone missing (seriously, how far could it have got?) so I didn’t have it pre-set to be ready for me, and I ended up running late (as per usual) so this suffered a bit from a too-short steeping time. Still a deliciously delicate balance of fruit and floral.
In high school, I participated in an annual golf tournament near Stratford. I always wanted to go there, but never got the opportunity to get there as an adult. I’ve heard the theater is fantastic!
teawing, thanks for the support! I did accept it was worth it with my second cup.
QuiltGuppy, Stratford is wonderful! The theatre festival is really remarkable and there are also a lot of lovely shops. Going there to see a Shakespeare production each year was part of my school’s curriculum and I definitely didn’t appreciate it enough at the time. I saw Jesus Christ Superstar this time and a while after buying the tickets I saw Andrew Lloyd Webber himself on CNN praising this production! Pretty cool. If you ever get another chance do visit. There’s a great tea shop!
Pretty jealous of your Stratford trip, being a canadian theatre gal :D
I have some TO friends so I def want to go to see some of the best theatre in Canada at Stratford some day. [Christopher Plummer stole my heart]!
Now I have a second reason to go, an awesome tea shop! :D
Do! It’s such a nice day trip from Toronto (it’s even nicer to stay the night and see something else the next day, but y’know, budget). The Shaw Festival in Niagara-on-the-Lake is also great. And there are lovely tea shops there, too. Tea + theatre are just meant to be!
With the return of Pumpkin Chai, I broke back into my tin from last year. I do love this tea. Pumpkin spice is one of my favourite flavours and favourite scents, and it works really well here. But, my complaint is always that this comes out thin. I feel like it needs more oomph. The scent is to-die-for and the taste is delicious but why do I always get this impression? I’ll have to try some from the new season/batch because I’m intrigued by DaisyChubb’s calling this thick! I’ll definitely have to stove-top it soon.
