I had forgotten that I had this! Found it the other day and had the most amazing cup of it – smoky, sweet, and just perfectly balanced. I had a second cup more recently, though, and I don’t think I hit the sweet spot – too hot, too much leaf, infused too long? – as it had some bitterness that had been completely absent in the previous cup.

I just realized that I have these weird fruit candies that block bitter receptors – I wonder what tea would taste like after having one of those?!

Roswell Strange – you have no notes on this tea? I find that odd. I got it recently (Mar 7, according to the bag), and was told it was fairly new? However, not super impressed by it, unfortunately. I’m hoping it was just user error, but have a feeling it’s just not a fantastic tea. It’s just… bland? DT has had some fantastic high-quality greens in recent years, so I assumed this would be the same.

Roswell Strange

It’s the same tea as Everyday Green – just a name change. I guess I haven’t had it since the name change, so I never ended up updating the page for it.

I feel like this tea is very successful and true to its name… and because of that, I’m not a huge fan. It’s a very well-done grapefruit tea, though, with minimal bitterness, but grapefruit sometimes doesn’t work for me. However, I just had the bright idea to sweeten it a little; that might work really well?

Here’s the way I like it best (although, I must admit that I love grapefruit): I usually add a pinch (a teensy pinch) of kosher salt to the cup. This is the way I generally consume my grapefruit, with a light sprinkling of salt to the top of a halved grapefruit.

A little sugar (as you mentioned) might help bring out the brown sugar notes a bit more as well.

Uh, this is really yummy. It apparently fits right into my favourite little oolong niche of creamy yet savoury, not overly floral. It’s really delicious, not quite as creamy as a milk oolong, but more depth. If I get 50g of free tea and it’s still around, this is definitely my pick.

I don’t know that the blackberries really came through here, but I also maybe shouldn’t have put in milk, as it probably dulled the flavours. That said, I enjoyed the spice combination and will be happy to drink this again! Heavier on the cardamom and lighter on the cinnamon = the type of chai that I find quite enjoyable.

Oh yes, I am crazy about this tea. I think it might be the base more than the flavouring, but I’m definitely digging the combination, and steep every last flavour molecule out before tossing the leaves.

Upping the rating from 82 into the 90s, because I definitely would buy 4oz of this…

Tastes like a sweeter/more caramelly version of Glitter & Gold? It’s alright, but I’m fairly over cinnamony blacks. I didn’t even watch for the glitter though, that makes me sad…

I was under the rather incorrect impression that this was going to be a blueberry tea, and was initially disappointed when I read otherwise, but the ingredients started to intrigue me – I don’t know that I’ve ever had a tea with powdered passion fruit before. It turned out to be a rather pleasant experience – I could distinctly taste the passionfruit, although the cacao and cayenne weren’t obvious (I drank this while working, though, so I also wasn’t paying a great deal of attention).

Probably not a tea I’d keep around, but it was tasty enough, and I’m interested to see if I can pull out some more flavours in round 2!

Recently got my box of teas from 52teas, containing a whole bunch of awesome things, so I’m slowly trying them all! A bright spot in all of this craziness.

Drank this tea today, unfortunately wasn’t a big fan – I’m finding that many orange-flavoured teas lately either taste like bubblegum or are bitter and cleaner-like; this tea falls into the former category for me. I did shake up the pouch a bit, but really only tasted bubblegum and missed any of the spicing (cinnamon, nutmeg) that is in the blend. We’ll see if I can improve it for future cups (maybe I didn’t mix it up well enough?)

Sipdown 2020! 24/365

Not sad this one’s gone. Made the last of it into iced tea, which my husband is enjoying – although I had some too. Raritea’s description of a cherry jolly rancher is pretty accurate, though it’s a little fruitier.

Bio

I have always been a tea fan (primarily herbals and Japanese greens/oolongs) but in the last year or so, tea has become increasingly more appealing as not only a delicious, calming drink, but as a relatively cheap, healthy reward or treat to give myself when I deserve something. I should clarify that, however; the reward is expanding my tea cupboard, not drinking tea – I place no restrictions on myself in terms of drinking anything from my cupboard as that would defeat my many goals!

My DavidsTea addiction was born in late 2011, despite having spent nearly a year intentionally avoiding their local mall location (but apparently it was just avoiding the inevitable!). I seem to have some desire to try every tea they’ve ever had, so much of my stash is from there, although I’ve recently branched out and ordered from numerous other companies.

I like to try and drink all my teas unaltered, as one of the main reasons I’m drinking tea other than for the flavour is to be healthy and increase my water intake without adding too many calories! I’ve found that the trick in this regard is to be very careful about steeping time, as most teas are quite pleasant to drink straight as long as they haven’t been oversteeped. However, I tend to be forgetful (particularly at work) when I don’t set a timer, resulting in a few horrors (The Earl’s Garden is not so pleasant after, say, 7+ minutes of steeping).

I’m currently trying to figure out which types of teas are my favourites. Herbals are no longer at the top; oolongs have thoroughly taken over that spot, with greens a reasonably close second. My preference is for straight versions of both, but I do love a good flavoured oolong (flavoured greens are really hit or miss for me). Herbals I do love iced/cold-brewed, but I drink few routinely (Mulberry Magic from DavidsTea being a notable exception). I’m learning to like straight black teas thanks to the chocolatey, malty, delicious Laoshan Black from Verdant Tea, and malty, caramelly flavoured blacks work for me, but I’m pretty picky about anything with astringency. Lately I’ve found red rooibos to be rather medicinal, which I dislike, but green rooibos and honeybush blends are tolerable. I haven’t explored pu’erh, mate, or guayasa a great deal (although I have a few options in my cupboard).

I’ve decided to institute a rating system so my ratings will be more consistent. Following the smiley/frowny faces Steepster gives us:

100: This tea is amazing and I will go out of my way to keep it in stock.

85-99: My core collection (or a tea that would be, if I was allowing myself to restock everything!) Teas I get cravings for, and drink often.

75-84: Good but not amazing; I might keep these in stock sparingly depending on current preferences.

67-74: Not bad, I’ll happily finish what I have but probably won’t ever buy it again as there’s likely something rated more highly that I prefer.

51-66: Drinkable and maybe has some aspect that I like, but not really worth picking up again.

34-50: Not for me, but I can see why others might like it. I’ll make it through the cup and maybe experiment with the rest to get rid of it.

0-33: It’s a struggle to get through the cup, if I do at all. I will not willingly consume this one again, and will attempt to get rid of the rest of the tea if I have any left.
