2977 Tasting Notes
brewed this strong in 3/4 cup water and used to make my instant whole grain cream of wheat (based on Samantha’s suggestion of making oatmeal with tea). This gave the otherwise tasteless gruel a nice hint of cinnamon & spice that complemented the whole grain nuttiness. With some milk, sugar, and raisins I had an edible and healthy breakfast. Also got a burst of energy after – maybe from the caffeine? Will def experiment more w/ cooking with this and other teas (ex. cooking rice in green or jasmine tea, etc.)
I’ve also made banana chai cake with this tea using this recipe: http://www.teachef.com/view_recipe.html?recipe=457
[[Note: I’m cooking with this tea instead of drinking it b/c my bag is very old, and I don’t like heavily spiced chai or heavily caffeinated black teas anyway. If you like chai that is heavy on the cinnamon you may like this one.]]
Preparation
Bought and brewed this for hubby who’s a coffee/mate/irish breakfast fan.
I’m not big on mate but I had a few sips and will take a shot at reviewing.
Taste is “roasty” like coffee (not woody like some mates). Tastes like chocolate and almond in coffee. Exactly what I expected based on the description. Hubby likes it. I would have to add sugar to counteract the slight (but appropriate) bitterness.
Overall a good blend for flavored mate drinkers/cafe mocha fans.
Preparation
Dry leaves smell of indeterminate spice/sweetness, Big chunks of dried fruit and some flowers visible in the blend.
Brews red-orange, smells like apples and cream, with a hint of what I would call “pumpkin pie spice.”
It is very sweet, no need to add sugar! Also it has a definite creamy taste to me. Can’t tell why, but I like it. However there is a slightly astringent/bitter finish that seems a bit tannic (drys the mouth). What’s up with that? Maybe it’s the melon, which I’m tasting as it cools.
I’m not quite sure what to make of all this. Maybe it’s not a first thing in the morning tea, because my taste buds are confused. This tea went from feeling creamy to feeling thin in about 5 min. And it’s sweet and fruity yet dries out my mouth… I can’t rate it right now. Will try on another day.
Preparation
Brewed for 2 min, then stirred in about 2/3 tsp matcha powder (from teavana) to make my own “Genmaimatcha” since I’ve been coveting the American Tea Room blend after reading everyone rave notes/ratings.
I like that the nutty/cereal flavor of the toasted rice tempers that sweet tone in the matcha, while also tempering the grassiness by supplying a complementary depth. (Does that make any sense? It’s Friday and my brain is fried…)
Preparation
I can definitely smell the cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg as soon as I open the packaging. I find myself imagining chocolate as well, but I think it’s more a mental association than an actual scent. As it steeps I smell mainly the cloves and cinnamon – a very “wintry” scent to me conjuring up warmth, mulled cider, and baked goods.
The liguor is a lovely shade of burnt orange. The taste is primarily of cinnamon and cloves/nutmeg, with just a hint of ginger on the finish. It is a bit “sharp” to me, but then I prefer my chai without too much spice. I added about 1.5 tsp sugar and a bit of milk and that mellows it out enough for me. I think it could use vanilla, but I feel that way about all spiced chais. Overall this tea tastes exactly how it should based on the ingredients. If you like chai, this is a very good bagged blend.
I hope this tea will wake me up. I’m feeling a bit fuzzy headed, maybe from the “get some zzz’s” tea I drank at 10pm. I did sleep a bit late this morning.
Preparation
I agree with Squee – this won’t put me to sleep if I’m wide awake, but it definitely seems to help turn drowsiness into actual sleep instead of tossing and turning. Yes, the mint is dominant, but the other herbs blend in to keep it from tasting like toothpaste or candy. It tastes “herbal” and clean & healthy, which I think is appropriate for a vaguely medicinal tea.
The mint is a bit too much for me, it really overpowers any tea taste. It’s ok for an RTD, and I don’t think they use fake sweetener which is nice. It may be the perfect refreshing tea for a hot summer day, but overall Honest Tea are the only bottled teas I seem to really enjoy.
may only use 5 bags next time as it’s a bit strong this way. may have overbrewed also – didn’t time it!
