Southern Boy Teas

I posted my second tasting note about this tea before I posted this tasting note which is actually should be my first tasting note. I’ve had two pouches of this tea, the first I hot brewed and I managed 2 half-gallon pitchers out of that (and the second pitcher was almost as flavorful as the first. Very little discernible loss in flavor!) The second pouch I first cold-steeped to see how that would fair and then hot brewed it for the second pitcher.
This is really good. Lots of berry flavor but the green tea doesn’t hide behind the flavors. It’s smooth, sweet, and there is some berry tartness but not too much. A very refreshing iced tea.
This is my second pitcher of this tea. Well, no, this is my third pitcher of this tea. This is my second pouch of this tea. I brewed the first pouch back in August (but I’m still quite behind on my posting!) and it was good for a gallon of delicious iced tea – hot brewed. I ordered a second pouch so that I could experiment a little bit and try it cold brewed – which is what i’m drinking now. It works well as a cold-brew too, although the flavor is not quite as intense as I remember from the first hot brew.
Here’s the link to my review of my first two pitchers of this iced tea: http://sororiteasisters.com/2014/08/21/wildberries-flavored-green-iced-tea-from-southern-boy-teas/
I like it as a cold-brew and I am thinking that by cold-brewing this the first time, I may get three pitchers of iced tea out of the one pouch. That would be awesome. I really like this flavor a lot, very berry-licious, but not so over-flavored that I’m missing out on the green tea flavor.
A really tasty iced tea.
Weird!
But I like it. Although I have to be honest, when I was preparing it last night, I wasn’t so sure that I’d like it. When I opened the pouch – oh my goodness – it was GARLIC. It smelled like I just opened the oven and inside was a halved loaf of French Bread that had been slathered with garlic butter and toasted until it was golden brown. So, as I was making the tea all I could think of was: This is so weird. This is not an odor I ever imagined smelling as I was making iced tea.
OK, that wasn’t the only thought I was having. My other thought was: I’m going to have to run a “cleaning cycle” on my Breville after I finish making this because I don’t want any residual odors/essences to latch themselves onto my next cup of tea.
Hmm … chocolate covered garlic?
OK … anyway, that was last night. Today, I’m drinking a glass of Garlic Toast flavored iced tea. And, yes, it’s weird, but it’s also … good. Believe it or not. I like the savory element of the garlic. I like that zesty garlic flavor. It highlights the black tea in a different way where I am exploring more of the sweet elements of the black tea because of how well they contrast with the sharp heat of the garlic.
And the garlic is not a heavy or overwhelming flavor. It is THERE and not hiding behind the tea at all, but there is more tea taste to this than garlic. I am drinking garlic flavored tea … not tea drowning in garlic essence.
Weird. Yes. But weird in a very interesting, unusual, and ultimately, tasty way.
HI GUYS totally did not mean to vanish, trying to decide if I risk going on Steepster at work because that’s where I’m doing all my tea drinking.
Especially since I had to go to the ER last week after I became allergic to the antibiotic I was taking out of nowhere, and my heart went crazy for a bit there. I’m afraid to drink coffee, hell, I was afraid to drink any non herbal teas until this week.
Anyway I’ve got a list of things to log but I didn’t add this on there since I was drinking it at home about two weeks ago.
I really would like to see this or something similar as a hot tea, because it honestly sounds like something that’d be better hot.
It is a bit busy though, I didn’t get too much pumpkin compared to chocolate and vanilla. All the flavors are present, that’s for sure, I just was drawn to it more for the pumpkin pie aspect.
I ended up not finishing the whole pitcher since two days later the whole allergy debacle went down, but I don’t think I’m in a hurry to try it again. It was good, but for me personally it just doesn’t suit iced tea.
Backlog:
I really liked this iced tea flavor. I believe I may have passed some of it along to my daughter who also loved it.
The mango flavor is strong. Notes of cream to create the “sherbet” flavor and I like the way this flavor melds with the natural malty tones of the black tea. It’s quite a delicious combination.
Thank you for the sale CHAroma! I actually hot brewed a teaspoon of this one on this fine warm, windy day. Warm windy days are my favorite. Anyway, I figured this one promised too much. Haha. Using water around ten minutes after boiling and steeping for 85 seconds, the flavor isn’t much. The dry leaves actually have a spicy fragrance and that is the most noticeable in the flavor. Maybe a hint of squash/pumpkin. The second steep actually seemed like chocolate syrup somehow along with the spicy, so I’m probably steeping it terribly. It’s very odd that it tastes like spices without actually having spices. Not so much vanilla. A caffeine kick for some power reading outdoors.
Steep #1 // 10 min after boiling // 85 second steep
Steep #2 // half mug // just boiled // 2 min
I bought this tea off the early kickstarter for SBT. I served it at my Thanksgiving party and it was a HUGE hit!
The rainbow sherbet flavor is dead on – it has that lime/orange/red taste is just like in the ice cream and is quite strong, with a classic southern black ice tea base. You don’t even need to add sugar to get the flavors to pop as they are already popping. I was surprised, as the group I was serving to aren’t big into teas, but loved this tea and didn’t take any sweetener when offered.
I would buy this again, maybe snag the loose leaf Rainbow sherbet 52 Teas if it’s around.
Preparation
This is really good – I steeped it for a little more than two minutes on accident, and I was concerned it would get bitter, but it didn’t. I don’t have a ton to say, as it is just a “wild berry” flavor, which I felt was accurate enough, and the flavor was strong and tasty. I would definitely recommend it.
Preparation
I cold brewed overnight, and probably used more water than I should have but it turned out great! Although not for the sophisticated palate this tastes exactly like little cola candies- the ones with the sugar sprinkled all over. It’s a happy tea :) quite fun.
P.S. I am back! :P
Being Canadian, I am used to rye whiskey, as that is what I would say the majority of Canadian whiskey is made of. Where I am from, there is actually not such a thing as whiskey, we call it rye – Can I have a rye and coke please! Ha ha. Anyway this is a preface to this note as this one tastes more like a malt corn whiskey. If anyone cares to know. (I swear I don’t drink that much…).
Made this one as per package directions, added 2 tsp of white sugar.
This one is actually not too bad. It definitely has a cola flavour and there are hints of whiskey in the background. I mentioned it tasted like malt corn whiskey, but I don’t get the feel of malt from the liquor, just the slight taste of malt, if that makes sense. (You can actually buy “malt” which is like a powder and you can mix it into things like drinks and milk shakes etc.). That is what I am tasting. There is, however, a strange chemical taste. It seems like that chemical taste you can get from some flavourings.
I would say that from the new SBTs (new as in from last years Kickstarter campaign), this is one of the better ones, IMO,
This is my second bag. The first bag I followed the traditional hot brew instructions and I did not get enough coconut cream pie for me so I cold brewed the 2nd steep and enjoyed the flavor much more and knew I would try it again. Cold brewed the second bag and so far it’s ok. I think I was hoping for something magical to happen because coconut cream pie is my favorite pie. The more I drink it the more I like it. Sweet coconut cream, good with a little milk also.
Backlog:
I liked this one. I don’t know that I got a pumpkin pie crepe that had been topped with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and drizzled with chocolate sauce or not. Then again, I can’t say that I’ve actually ever had this dessert before, but if I saw it on a menu, I’d be sure to save room for dessert so that I could try it.
It is an interesting medley of flavors though, and I can taste the pumpkin and the chocolate and the vanilla. I can taste notes of spice and the black tea notes in this too.
It’s tasty. It’s an interesting combination of flavors, but I like it.
While I like a lot of 52Teas blends, this one didn’t agree with me. It tasted very artificial and bothered my stomach, for whatever reason. The boything didn’t care for it either, and we wound up throwing out most of the pitcher.
Flavors: Artificial, Pear
Preparation
This is a drink I have some experience with, so I was interested to try the SBT version. I drink more tea than alcohol now, so it’s fitting in some ways! I gave this one the usual SBT treatment (3 minutes in 1/4 litre of boiling water, topped up to 2 litres with cold and into the fridge overnight). Dry, I could definitely smell cola.
Fridge cold, this is a nice experience on a hot day. Far more refreshing than the alcoholic alternative would be! Cola is the first flavour I can taste upon taking a sip, and it’s the usual generic brand, flat cola that 52 Teas do so well. I mean that as a compliment, because I adore Frank’s cola flavouring. The whiskey comes out second, and adds a soft, mellow note to the overall taste. Slightly grainy. It’s actually hard to describe how whiskey tastes — it tastes like whiskey, only without the warming power of the real thing.
I’m enjoying this one, and I’ll happily sip away on it for the rest of the day. This is an SBT I’d pick up again.
Preparation
I was so excited when I saw this because I love peppermint. My husband thinks it tasted like drinking iced tea with an Altoid in your mouth. I can see where he gets that, it does have a nice cool mouth feel, but it reminded me more of peppermint extract. I’m hoping today was just an off day for me and plan on trying it again in the future.
This tea is so weird.
Good weird.
Somehow I can taste every single element of it and while it’s quite the busy tea it’s very yum. The pumpkin pie comes out and screams "oh hi now, I’m pumpkin pie!!!!!!(how is this ever going to work?) out peaks something soft and creamy(oh hmmm vanilla I see you now) then at the swallow comes some sweet chocolate(wait a minute did I seriously just drink a Pumpkin Pie Crepe with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Chocolate Sauce tea?)
Why yes I did!
I hot brewed/flash chilled my first batch, saved the bag and did a second cold brew of it for about 16 hours rendering a rather potent drink.
This is a crazy tea I can never quite wrap my head around but I keep drinking more of it so it’s doing something right.
