Ok, I’m on a quest for my perfect morning tea. I have replaced all my tea consumption from bags to loose leaf, EXCEPT for my morning tea. I have teabags (black) from a local company that I have been drinking in the morning. It’s not amazing, but it’s decent. For some reason, till now I have not wanted to change that.

Maybe, as I try and taste more types of teas, I am have slowly become a tea snob, because suddenly that morning teabag seems inadequate.

Thus I have embarked on the journey to find loose leaf replacements. For my first stop, I turned to my local (and only) tea shop and purchased a variety of blacks. They don’t sell samples which is a pity as i would have purchased even more. However I am saving on international shipping, so it is, maybe, still worthwhile. Now I have several 50g pouches of black tea to try. I am going to try each for a week.

This is the first tea I have tried. It’s an assam/yunnan blend, which I have never had before. I like yunnan and it’s sweet honey flavor. This shop has a Yunnan Imperial tea that is outstanding. It it one of my favorites. However, this blend is heavy on the yunnan and lighter on the assam, resulting in a tea that is deliciously sweet, but not suitable for morning, when I need a stronger eye-opening tea. It’s like a lighter, slightly maltier yunnan.

This tea is good, but not strong enough for the morning, but I might keep some hand for afternoons.

I really like this one for sheer drinkability. If I don’t know what kind of tea I want, I want this one. The bergamot flavor is strong but not overpowering; the mint is there but not too strong. I bought this in the little cheesecloth tea bags, in Paris at the PdT store on Rue du Cherche-Midi, which I just stumbled on while walking home one day during a Paris vacation.

Mmmmm very rich with aromas. Nice smell of quality black tea…
Not sure how to describe it. Can taste like honey and there’s a bit of that earthy plus hay like taste that puehrs have. Quite mild and very very tasty…
Even the colour is more dark brown than red. Excellent black leaning onto puehr…

Yumm

This has serious favorite potential (Obrigada P!). It has a middle weight body (Ok, light by british standards, deep by French standards maybe), marvelously fragrant, and tannins are just right for me.

any theories on what the secret blend is? I would swear there is some citrus on it, though it does not sound at all like some secret tibetan ingredient.

Literally like tipping your tongue in the honey pot. The spicy smell of the dry leaves becomes very flowery once steeped, really inviting. Its bronze colour gives a very warm start to your mornings.

I turned around tea for a long time, without ever knowing what tea really was. Now i do ! I had long expected to taste that famous tea, and at first cup … I almost gagged. So used to drink “teas” that were nothing but tea, it took me some steeping to really appreciate this legendary Dragon Well. Now i can’t spend one day without some steeping of this treasure …

I bought this first in bags for the office: the bergamot was present and working nicely with this mix but then I got it in loose leafs and I only get mint, very light. Might have to try again but it’s getting pretty boring.

Brewed in a big teapot.
The bergamot was too strong for my taste and the mint almost absent.
I tried it cold and didn’t really like it too.

90°C in a big teapot, the taste is either absent or two strong on the dark basis.

The green tea base is too present for my taste, the base is the same for all Le palais des thes’s green teas.
I preferred the roobios version, same taste but without the green base.
Brewed at 80°C
