49 Tasting Notes
This tea smelled so good I had to try it, despite the fact that I don’t usually go for the overly-sweet cake-y teas. Which is exactly what this is. Red Velvet Cake tasted like butterscotch ick. The birthday cake collection was rooibos so I gave that a complete miss (just the smells turned this owl’s stomach). Coffee cake on the other hand… was worth trying.
In hindsight I probably shouldn’t have done it as a latte – the milk brought out the sweetness a bit too much. I’ll try steeping it straight next time. All I can think is, this would probably blend well with a chai or something to balance it out. Perhaps Sugar and Spice… oh, and can we take a moment to talk about how saddening it is that the autumn teas are gone?!
Anyway, sweet is the word here, but in an actual tastes-like-cake way, so its not all that bad. Wishing there was more coffee in this one, then again maybe there’s the answer to the blending, Coffee Chai.
Hm. So many questions.
They had this on sample yesterday. Coincidentally Owlie is on an oolong kick so three lightbulbs went off. Chocolate? Check. Coconut? Cheeeeck. Oolong? Absolutely check.
I haven’t tried a resteep of this yet, and I slightly oversteeped my first try as compared to when I sipped in store. Am I even drinking the same tea as the rest of you though? ’Cause this owl got almost no licorice the first time, and only slightly more the second. Either way the coconut and chocolate are quite..pronounced. And yes the first sip does make you blech out a bit, sort of like Starbucks Chocolate Chai did…
Just be mindful of how long you let it steep the first time. Leave it in too long and you’ll get more licorice. To me though this one taste like these chocolatey coconut balls my gran makes around Christmas. Slightly bittersweet, rummy, coconutty…
Currently I am in shock, steeping this tea, and indulging in some nostalgia. I picked up Choconut Oolong, Alpine Punch, Coffee Cake and this tea, along with a regular oolong to try. Seeing the reviews I may have to pick up some of the fig and mint ones to try next time..
Anyway. On to the shock. The shock being this tea. I can chalk it up to my tea-stebuds evolving, or the fact that Gingerbread and rooibos apparently go really well together. As in, this tea when it was steeping, smelled exactly like baking gingerbread. It TASTES like gingerbread.
Going to get the rating speak for itself. Owlie is impressed.
How did I miss reviewing this?
Way back when it came out I picked up some of it, tried it, and dismissed it. Now however, this owl has developed a taste for coconut. The trick is purely in the steep time here. Not too little, not too long – otherwise it becomes bitter. Just the right amount of time and it becomes a smooth, sweet coconutty tea, even a bit of a buttery flavour. The vanilla is really noticeable in this one which I like, it blends lovely with coconut. Again, the only danger is over/understeeping, which seems to be why I don’t like any white teas – they’re a very tempermental steep for me. Maybe this is why Buddhas Blend was such a flop for me. Might have to revisit that tea as well, I really did want to like it.
Anyways, long live the coconut!
Right so late night teatime results in Owlies Tea Alchemy! I’ve been experimenting, and finally put one of my concoctions down. The autumn teas have inspired me this year and they all blend so well together…
So i hated up a mug of milk and got ready. Sidenote, I’m going through this phase where I don’t use water at all, I just steep directly into hot milk. As such, my taste might be slightly different than yours. Anyway. Half a spoon of Forever Nuts went in, plus a heaping full spoon of Sugar and Spice. What I didn’t want was it to turn out too sweet and nutty, what I wanted was the Sugar and Spice to be prominent. And I think I got that here. Turned the milk a lovely shade of light pink, though if you’re using water I imagine it’ll be more of a maroon/amber.
The spice is definitely the dominant one here, and the milk brings out the sweetness in it more, which blends well with Nuts. This owl is even detecting hints of apple cinnamon… hmm…. Perhaps a second steep of this is in order, perhaps with some Moms Apple Pie…

SO I have no idea whatsoever why it took me so long to drink this. According to just about everyone, this, Pumpkin Chai, and Read My Lips are the quintessential DavidsTea holy trinity. And it wasn’t until they sampled it here randomly that I actually gave in and tried it. I think I was expecting a bland, nutty flavour and thats probably what put me off (same as Pistachio Cream honestly, I should have seen this coming) But I digress. The summer teas were hit or miss, and most of them had to be iced for this owl to properly enjoy them. The Spring teas however were the bomb. Seems like Summer is an unlucky tea season for Owlie because I’m adoring the fall teas. And why Forever Nuts doesn’t fall in there is a mystery.
This tastes like creamy nutty cinnamony goodness. Like autumn harvest, or some kind of apple crumble without the apple… I may need to blend this with another fall tea, Moms Apple Pie perhaps… or a nice chai… Hmm. So many options. (another thing I’m doing lately, creating ridiculous tea alchemy). And I nearly s**t my plumage when I saw how pink it turned. Was not expecting it. So beautiful. So delicious. If you haven’t latte’d this… do it.
No. Nononononono.
Uggggh. This was the fly in the tea after so many wonderful steeps today. No no no noooooo. It smelled so good in store too, with just a hint of fuzzy peaches and pears.
But ugh. Its all astringency and hibiscus and overpowering florals and bitter bitter bitter. Uggggh. I wish I could like this tea but no. Its not happening. The aftertaste is delicious, but the avalanche of bitterness you must endure to get there is too much for this owl to take. Ugh.
Creamy, nutty, very much a comfort-tea. Mama Owl rather likes this one too. Have yet to try with Salted Caramel as per suggestion, but it does feel like its missing something.
This would be great to experiment with and blend with other teas… Buttered Rum.. Salted Caramel…maybe even a few chais. Hmmm.. the possibilities are endless…
Got this as a latte-to-go today purely because I was curious. Dry, it smelled odd. I could pick up a bit of the coffee,but it was mostly spices.
This isn’t something I would drink all the time… but it woke me up and mellowed me out, which, as a non morning person is always a help on those rare occasions I must be out of bed before noon. Its a very mellow chai, which to me could have used some more kick to it. But the coffee flavour wasn’t overpowering which is what I was worried of. Overall… I’m still pondering it. Not a usual combination of flavours, but its not offputting to me at all.
Well… This certainly has been interesting.
Tried a whole bunch of different teas today, reviews to follow. This one, however, simply demanded it be done first. I’m probably going to sound bonkers while I’m at it, but that’s alright. Last time I was at DT and I smelled this, I got nothing. Zip. Zilch. Nothing. Didn’t do it for me. It looked green and wrinkly, and like it would be bitter and green and earthy and disgusting and the sight of it just turned me off altogether.
Today, however… it smelled intriguing. So much so, that we ended up buying a little bag. Hm. Well I guess we’ll try it. Mama Owl stepped it straight, while I opted for a latte-style (don’t ask me why, I just went with my gut). We both steeped, sipped, and wondered. And wondered. And wondered.
Neither of us expected it to taste so GOOD. Ladies and gentleowls, the name of the tea is Pistachio Cream but don’t let it fool you. At first it tasted like warm, melted pistachio ice cream. Crazy? Nope. Gets crazier. We started picking up other notes too, like sugary bubblegum, lollipops, and all the while, pistachio frickin’ ice cream. Thats when it hit us. Of course it tastes like ice cream and candy – its a fall tea. This is the Halloween Candy tea. bells ring
I’ve been so bummed that my favourite (and regrettably seasonal) Copabanana is done for the year, but this owl thinks she found her fall/winter replacement herbal.
Oh and the chamomile? What chamomile! I tasted no chamomile in this tea!
