Sipdown!

I find that I really do like this tea, even though it’s an odd one for me. And the name is totally inappropriate! In my opinion, it should be called “Jinjunmei Smoked Meats Fragrance”. Lovely light smoky, savory tea. Yums! :)

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
mj

LOL I don’t think they’d sell much if it was called “smoked meats fragrance”

Cameron B.

Well the orchid is a lie! :P

boychik

I’d take smoke meat over orchid

Terri HarpLady

Me too, LOL :D

Lariel of Lórien

I’d rather have orchids.

Miss mj was nice enough to send me a sample of this tea in our swap! I felt oh-so left out when I didn’t choose it as one of my free samples from Green Terrace, as it seemed to be everyone’s favorite. Doh! So hooray, now I get the chance to try it! I was planning on ordering a sample soon, but they seem to have done away with their samples sizes, which makes me sad. The leaves have that “creepy tree branch” look about them, they’re very dark and thin and twisty. I think my sample may have been contaminated a bit by the sample of Crio Bru’s Cavalla that mj also sent, because it smells super chocolately! Like, on a Golden Orchid level of chocolately. No that I’m complaining, it smells delicious! :P

Once brewed, the tea smells like heavenly sweet potatoes with brown sugar and cinnamon over the top. Om nom nom. Mm, that sweet potato goodness carries over to the taste as well, and so do the caramelized brown sugar and cinnamon notes. I also get some dark chewy bread, which goes well with the sweet potato. There’s a little touch of dried fruit flavor as well, more of a suggestion than anything, and not specific enough for me to call it by name. Lastly, near the end, a light floral note starts to pop up and say “hello”. It’s inoffensive, not soapy or heady, more of a light ethereal floral taste that just serves to lighten up the whole thing. Yum!

Flavors: Baked Bread, Brown Sugar, Burnt Sugar, Cinnamon, Dried Fruit, Floral, Sweet Potatoes

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
mj

I’m glad you liked it and that I could split my sample with you. It’s way lame that they did away with their sample sizes.
I think I double bagged the Crio Bru, but that stuff has quite the chocolatey aroma so I guess it wasn’t enough.

TeaBrat

I noticed recently that Norbu did away with their sample sizes as well. :(

Cameron B.

mj, I don’t mind! Now it smells delicious, lol. It didn’t seem to affect the taste.

And yes, super lame about the samples. :(

KiwiDelight

I was about to remark on that…because this tea sounds divine. But I don’t want to spend 20 on it just in case…

Miss Marzipan was sweet enough to send me a sample of this once after she ordered a tin during their free shipping sale. Thanks Marz! :) Visually, it’s generic black tea leaves with itty bitty chunks of something, which I assume is fig? A couple of them look like they could be citrus peel, so maybe it’s both. Dry scent is delicious strong and sweet fig with vanilla – I don’t really smell lemon here. I did a 4 minute steep at 200 degrees.

Mm, the brewed aroma is also strong figs (which to me, includes a honey scent) with sweet and woody vanilla and a touch of lemon. To be totally, I’m a little bit disappointed by the level of flavor here, I could have used a little bit more. I can taste all three flavors, which is nice, but I was hoping for more fig. I added a teaspoon of honey to mine, because I feel like honey and fig is a natural combination, and it did help to bring out the flavor a little more. I actually really like the lemon here, it adds a nice top note and really freshens the whole thing up. Something in the base tea tastes a little odd to me, almost mineral? Maybe I should have stopped at a 3 minute steep. Luckily, Marz sent me enough of this to try it a few times! :)

Flavors: Fig, Lemon, Oak wood, Vanilla

I would definitely like to try this someday!

Veronica

Sounds nice!

Lariel of Lórien

It reminds me of scones. Even though fig is an odd flavour.

Marzipan

I thought it was a little light on flavor too.

mj

Because of this tasting note, I bought figs at the store today. I couldn’t stop thinking about them!

TeaBrat

I had some figs for breakfast today…. :))

Marzipan

I have never had an actual fig. Just Fig Newtons!

Lariel of Lórien

Try the mission figs.

mj

I got Turkish brown figs and caramelized them in honey. Noms

Cameron B.

I’ve never had a fresh fig, but the dried ones are delicious. :)

Ost

This tea has always perked my interest…but we have a fig tree in our front yard…and as often as I’ve tried it over the years, I cannot get myself to be a fig fan. Think it’s mainly the texture that puts me off…Wasn’t a bad taste though, someday I’ll have to get this tea. xD

boychik

I love fresh figs but they are expensive. Brown are the best. Don’t really like green ones. Dried ones are good substitute in winter. If I had a nice backyard I would plant my own.

Another tea that I removed to sample later. I’ve had one ginseng oolong before, but that one didn’t have the green powder coating like most of them do, so I figured I’d try this one as well. The leaf is tightly rolled pellets which are coated with an olive green powder. Dry scent is somewhat sweet and woody or something? It’s hard for me to describe, lol. I gave it a 4 minute steep a 200 degrees.

Yum, the brewed tea smells interesting! It’s very sweet and herbaceous with a bit of a woody note. The taste is much milder than I would think. There’s a light roastiness from the oolong itself, and then there’s a mild sweetness and an interesting vegetal note that reminds me of matcha or green tea flavored things. There’s a lovely sweet and fresh aftertaste that lingers nicely. Pleasantly surprised by this one! :)

This is the first of the five samples I took out before sending the box on its way. I’ve tried houjicha once in the past, and didn’t really like it, so I figured I’d give it another chance. The leaf is a mixture of leaf and stem pieces, are they’re a light to medium golden brown in color. Dry scent is roasty and autumn leafy with a surprising amount of sweetness. I let mine steep for 3 minutes at 200 degrees.

Once brewed, it’s very roasty-smelling and reminds me of autumn leaves and roasted oolong. There’s not as much sweetness here are there was in the dry. If I’m remembering correctly, this one tastes pretty similar to the other houjicha that I tried. It just tastes like roasted autumn leaves with straw and a little bit of a toasted nut flavor. It’s decent and I’ll finish it, but this isn’t something I would ever need to keep in my cupboard.

Cheri was kind and generous enough to provide me with a sample of this (pricey) tea! Thanks so much, dear! The leaves are black, long, quite thin, and twisty. They definitely look similar to Fujian Black and Ailaoshan Black, the two teas that make up this blend. Dry scent is very chocolatey with sweet vanilla, yum yum! Cheri’s sample was about 2 teaspoons, so I just used the whole thing and used slightly more water (10 oz versus 8 oz) to compensate. I let it steep for 3 minutes.

Once brewed, it smells very strongly of grain and bread with plenty of malt. There’s also lovely chocolate and sweet vanilla with a bit of dried fruit (from the Ailaoshan I presume). I must say, I was expecting much more vanilla in the taste… The strongest notes are heavy grain and bread with that dill/caraway flavor that I often get with Fujian teas. There’s also a lot of dark bitter cocoa flavor and a touch of dark dried fruits (maybe raisins or prunes). I am surprised to not find much vanilla here, and I’m also surprised that this tea comes off are more savory than sweet to me. I’m partially relieved that I don’t love it based on the price, and partially worried that I’m missing something that other people are tasting… Lol.

Flavors: Baked Bread, Dark Bittersweet, Dill, Grain, Raisins, Vanilla

Preparation
200 °F / 93 °C 3 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 10 OZ / 295 ML
Cheri

I’m glad you enjoyed it. It’s okay not to love a tea that everyone else seems to love.

Cameron B.

Thanks for letting me try it! :D

boychik

it maybe water. i didnt try this one. I dont find any chocolate on Ailaoshan either. Fruits yes, chocolate – no. Ailashan is a little soapy to me. not in a bad way, i still like it. it reminds me Taiwanese blacks.

Cameron B.

boychik, I don’t really get chocolate from Ailaoshan either. I think it’s the Fujian that contributes most of the cocoa notes here. :)

Hah, I automatically went to type “Lewis & Clarke TTB” at the top of my post. Whoops! I did keep five more teas to try, but none of them are black teas, and I need my black tea in the morning! :) This one came from Han Xiang Ecological Tea on AliExpress. The leaves are gorgeous, as you can no doubt see from the image. They’re straight with pointed ends, definitely reminiscent of pine needles, and of course they’re golden and fuzzy and lovely! Dry scent is very sweet and honeyed with that lovely stonefruit smell that these teas tend to have.

Once brewed, this tea smells sweet and bready with sweet potato notes. I’m also getting a little bit of cocoa. The taste is all the things I love about Yunnan teas – smooth, sweet, bready, sweet potato-y, and with just a bit of fruitiness. It’s making me a bit happier this morning, when I’m grumpy because I didn’t sleep well last night. :P

Flavors: Apricot, Baked Bread, Honey, Malt, Sweet Potatoes

Preparation

Sorry you didn’t sleep well, Cam bot! But I’m sure glad the tea is helping!!! :)

Cameron B.

Thanks dear! It’s just one of those days when I feel meh.

Cheri

I almost typed in L&CTTB for my first tea post tea box as well.

Another Tea Sparrow tea from Cheri! I’ve been curious about this tea for a little while, as I always am about anything almond or vanilla-related. There are a few pieces of almond mixed in with the rooibos itself. Dry scent is quite sweet and I can definitely smell vanilla. The instructions recommended a tablespoon of tea (?!) but that sounded ridiculous to me, so I halved it for my 8 ounce cup.

Once brewed, it smells like rooibos (woody, etc.) with vanilla and the tiniest hint of marzipan. Unfortunately, this basically tastes like rooibos to me… Maybe with a little bit of vanilla, but not enough. And I definitely don’t get any almond. Oh almond teas, why must you always disappoint? :(

Flavors: Rooibos, Vanilla

Preparation
Boiling 5 min, 0 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Cheri

Sorry you didn’t like this one. I love it. I do agree that Tea Sparrow makes ridiculous suggestions in their instructions. The Tea Spot recommends only 1t, but I usually go a little over that.

I like rooibos, though, but not everyone does.

Cameron B.

I don’t mind rooibos in blends, but it’s not my favorite as a main flavor.

Tealizzy

There’s a really good almond black tea by Queen Mary Tea. It’s called almond cream.

Cameron B.

Thanks Tealizzy, I’ll wishlist that one. :)

Another jasmine tea! I figured this would be nice to start winding down for sleep soon. And I’ve really enjoyed Verdant’s teas so far! Visually, this one is basically a silver needle, I don’t see any jasmine flowers in it. Dry scent is very jasmine and very sweet.

Once brewed, this tea smells like jasmine candy. Seriously, it’s that sweet-smelling! I’m a bit saddened by this tea… The jasmine flavor is actually very good, it’s quite sweet which I like. However, I can’t taste the silver needle underneath at all. It adds a creamy texture, but that’s about it. So while the jasmine is nice here, I’m missing the base tea! :(

Flavors: Creamy, Jasmine, Sweet

Preparation
185 °F / 85 °C 2 min, 0 sec 2 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Cheri

I think TeaVivre does a great job with their silver needle jasmine. I could send you some, if you want.

This is going to be another one of those terrible notes because I was playing Diablo III again… Oopsies. The leaves are those type that are thin and dark and partially curved into little ‘u’ shapes and loops. Dry scent was faint jasmine.

I found that this tea had a little too much jasmine for me when it was hot, I couldn’t really taste the green tea base much. As it cooled, I liked it more, but it was still very jasmine-y. Apparently I would like jasmine green teas cold brewed! :P

Flavors: Jasmine, Sweet

Preparation
175 °F / 79 °C 1 min, 30 sec 1 tsp 8 OZ / 236 ML
Cheri

Jasmine cold brewed is fantastic. And if you think something has too much jasmine, do another infusion. I find that helps, too.

Bio

Hi, I’m Cameron! I’m a 30-year-old software engineer currently living in Austin, Texas with my husband and our two pugs, Gobo and Ume. I tend to cycle between my different hobbies, and they include knitting, video games, board games, miniature painting, bento, baking, and – of course – TEA! But really, what I’m best at is collecting hobby related-things… ;)

I prefer my tea lukewarm or at room temperature and without milk or sugar. I will often sweeten iced tea. I brew Western style, and fluctuate between using mugs or teapots with small cups depending on the season. Occasionally I’ll brew Gongfu style when I’m in the mood. I also use a kyusu for Japanese teas.

I am always up for a swap! Just let me know if you’d like to try something in my cupboard.

Tea Preferences:
I enjoy both flavored and unflavored teas in many forms. These days, I drink mostly flavored teas, and I tend to gravitate most toward black, green, and oolong varieties. I do have a special fondness for straight Japanese green teas, however.

Fruit: All of them! My ‘go-to’s tend to be in the red fruits, stonefruit, or citrus spectra. I also really love apple, banana, berry, fig, lychee, melon, pear, and rhubarb flavors. Tropical fruits aren’t among my favorites, but I still enjoy them once in a while – especially mango and pineapple. I am not generally a fan of coconut in tea, though there are some exceptions.

Dessert: I love creamy vanilla and marshmallow flavors, along with anything in the caramel family such as butterscotch, toffee, or maple. Chocolate is also a favorite, though I’m often disappointed by it in tea. And don’t forget anything buttery, cakey, or cookie-y!

Floral: I’m a little bit more particular in this category. I very much enjoy jasmine, even strong jasmine, along with sakura and chamomile. But I’m not crazy about rose or lavender flavors, and I prefer hibiscus in moderation only.

Spices: I don’t generally find myself drawn to masala chai, but I do enjoy spices combined with other flavors. My favorite spices are the warm ones, especially cinnamon, nutmeg, anise, and cardamom. A bit of heat from black pepper or chili is okay too, as long as it’s not overwhelming! Ginger can be a lovely accent, but I find it difficult to drink as a starring flavor.

Aromatics: I’m obsessed with Earl Grey! I also love cooling flavors such as mint (especially spearmint), pine, juniper, and eucalyptus. I am not a fan of strong rosemary or sage in tea.

Favorite Purveyors:
Bird & Blend
Dammann Frères
Kusmi
Kyoto Obubu Tea Farms
Lupicia
Taiwan Tea Crafts
TeaVivre
Yunnan Sourcing

Tea Rating Scale:
90-100: Outstanding! Permanent cupboard resident
80-89: Great – a possible staple
70-79: Good, but I wouldn’t buy it
60-69: It’s decent
50-59: Meh… I may or may not have finished the cup
40-49: Ick. Couldn’t finish it.
00-39: Repulsive, I spat it out

I will sometimes refrain from rating a tea if I feel I’m too biased due to my personal dislikes, or if I suspect the sample has been compromised by age.
