Savory/Umami Teas

Steepster is buzzing w/ tastings of Adagio’s savory teas sampler. Does anyone know of other savory or umami teas out there?

Not sure but would LOVE to hear about them if they are around!

Other than Adagio’s savory teas the only one I’m aware of is The Tea Farm’s Vinegar Black.

Could ya’ll post a link to Adagio’s savory tea sampler please? I went over and rummaged around their site but couldn’t find it. I’m sure I’m just missing it. I just wanted to see what the teas were. Thanks.

They don’t have the sampler anymore- you have to buy them separately. Here’s where to find them: under “flavores”: Sweet Potato Pie and Sesame, under “green”: Artichoke, and under “white”: cucumber.

That’s just odd.

But they say it tastes like tomato soup so I’m game.:)

Hmm… I love tomato soup so I’d probably try it if it happened to be around.

This one does sound interesting. Fresh corn raw is so sweet and flavorful.

Japanese greens tend to have a bit of a savory Umami flavor, in fact it is what Gyokuro is known for. But certain sencha-s have it to a degree.

Lapsang souchong and gunpowder.

Cofftea said 15 years ago

Hm… never really thought of them that way… 52teas maple bacon would definitely be one!

I have to agree with teaplz. Lapsang just has that red-meat cooked over an open fire feel to me.

Would http://steepster.com/teas/teafrog/6561-bamboo-shoots-flavoured-green be considered umami? Yet another reason I need to go to Japan. I’m having trouble putting my finger on exactly what qualifies as umami and what doesn’t.

Adagio’s sesame tea is good so that doesn’t bother me, but I’m not sure about blending it w/ caramel. Harney and Sons Tokyo sure has the sweet ‘n’ savory thing goin.
