YUM! This is MUCH better than anything out of the Verdant blend club box for last month! I definitely get a genmaicha vibe from the toasted rice, but the tangy oolong is interesting and different. The coriander and cinnamon give this a curry-like vibe. Very savory, and very southeast asian :)
The first time I tasted this I was sick and all I could taste was cinnamon, which was by no means a bad thing. Now that my sinuses are (mostly) better, I am looking forward to trying this again!
Mmmmm mmmm mmmmmmm, I really like this tea! Lots of coriander and cinnamon flavor. I honestly don’t taste much toasted rice but I don’t care. The delicate oolong taste barely manages to come through the spices, at least on the first few sips. Once again, I’m okay with that…I have really been craving a good cinnamon tea and this really hit the spot. Sometimes I think chai blends have too much in them but never enough cinnamon..so even though this is not a chai, this really fills that craving!
As it cools I can taste more of the oolong, and it’s delicious. This is a tea I would be willing to keep around, especially in the winter months! I have to agree with another reviewer..this tea tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Just better. Lol!
Preparation
You know what is suboptimal for getting sipdowns done? Eating something bad last night and having a still-not-happy stomach this morning. Ugh. So even though this isn’t on my sipdown list, I broke it open because it has mint in it, and will hopefully help my stomach settle.
For a minty-herby tea, it’s not bad. No really my thing unless I happen to have a stomach ache, but decently tasty. At first I though the puerh in this would turn me off of it especially since when it was fresh brewed and very hot it smelled a lot like earthy shu, but that has calmed down quite a bit. Very herby, a bit medicinal. Basically what I was looking for this morning… at least I had it around.
Preparation
I pulled this one out of the cupboard yesterday as well. I am STILL not a fan of goji berries in my chai but as long as they’re there, i can pick them out without too much fuss. I still prefer loashan black chai to this one, but this is also a really tasty one. it’s nice to have both back in my cupboard to get me through the rest of winter – which is the only time i really love drinking chai. :)
Final Count yesterday: 103 (because i didn’t add the teas i received from Cavocorax yet…)
sipdown! Working from home today because i don’t want to get my colleagues sick. Finished off the last of this that i had with a few steeps to just enjoy the flavours in this brew on this COLD morning! Sad to see this go, though i do prefer laoshan chai a bit better heh
i totally had a cup of this in the afternoon and it complete got away from me. just that kind of day.
still in search of a way to get the O dor in canada or the US….
not entirely..but i think i prefer some of the other chais verdants done a bit better. but i also love coriander heh
yeah james… from their website it’s 25euro + 6 euro in taxes… which is a little steep for me just to mail stuff this way. esp when i picked up DF teas for 8 euro shipping
okay….. ask about ‘alternate modes’ of shipping. yeah, that’s the technical term. if they refuse (which they may) let me try a group order approach tomorrow after my presentation, k? i’ve been looking for an excuse…. =0) that way we split it.
Get someone from the USA to send it to you. I think it’s way cheaper from here to there than visa versa. Verdant uses boxes but individuals can use bubble envelopes. Find someone close to the border and swing a deal.
I want to try and brew this like real chai with the next steeping. I had multiple steeps of this in the early morning and it is a terribly delicious chai. I’m quite happy with this monthly blend over some of the previous ones :) The base really works in this one to blend with the spices going on. I’m beginning to think that Verdant has got their chai going on, as I am a fan of a number of them :)
It looks pretty as it steeps, it turns into a neat murky red berry colour. Like natural dye. :)
Tasting it, I get tulsi and fennel. That’s pretty much it.
I don’t care for this one so much, so do any of my current swap peeps want to try?
Preparation
I treat this like I would a mulling spice mix. Better with Apple cider, wine or cranberry juice mixed in…or some black tea and honey like chai.
Good to know, Bonnie. :) My offer still stands. As the tea is cooling I’m getting loads of coriander and it’s starting to taste soapy. I don’t think this one’s for me! (I have a love-hate relationship with the herb. Sometimes it works, sometimes it really doesn’t!)
This is really good and robust. Not an average cup of Chai~oh No!
Please try it with honey to bring
the full complexity of it through fruition.
I taste the Ginger in it first & most predominantly.
Thank God for the Ginger this morning as
my tummy was really hurting when I woke up.
The Cinnamon and the Cardamom
make the Ginger more complex and palatable.
The Sweet Potato and Peppercorn are far more subtle
and the honey…draws it all the way out.
There is not enough vanilla in it for me to taste, but enough
to make it creamy. This is the dark and spicy chai
you are dreaming of folks.
If you are a Chai lover…call Verdant and ask for this…
It might not be available YET,
but with all this fuss…surely it will be in everyone’s fortune cookie <3
I did not mention some of the other ingredients, but that is not that they did not contribute.I believe the making is in the mix ;-)
I steeped for 2 minutes and added 2 tsp honey and
a tablespoon of cream
(vs the 1/3c. of milk listed on the TOMBC sheet)
This is likely something you have to play with yourself as I suspect most people have a peculiar preference
as to how they prefer their Chai.
Try it your way~ you cannot go wrong :-p
The lingering aftertaste has a earthy taste of the burdock root
with ginger and a subtle hint of saffron…the aftertaste alone will leave you begging for more.
You had this the same way I love it too! This isn’t like every other Chai, not a better version of an old favorite but really unique. I also called and emailed David and Lily because this is so good.
I am going to send them a facebook message about this one as well! I still have to try it stovetop, I am hoarding it just in case it doesn’t become available, I don’t want to run out of this one! Love the earthiness and the ginger. I need to try it with honey too!
While this chai is pretty good, it does not compare to the classic masala of Chandernagor by MF. This one has all sorts of different flavours that all try to work together, but it’s just not working so well for me this morning.
It’s – dare I say – too complex.
Preparation
I found this, I drank this, and it’s mostly good.
It has a weird dirty flavour that other people seem to call “chocolate” all the time. I know I said this was really good before. And objectively it is a really really good chai. I’m glad I got to try it, but it’s not for me.
1 tbsp for 5 minutes in my travel mug.
This is pretty darn good. I generally really like the blends from Verdant. I added a splash of soy creamer, and yep. This is definitely a tea I’d buy again. For some reason, the blend of spices doesn’t let the coriander get too soapy for me.
Total bonus.
(I really dislike cilantro/coriander.)
Preparation
I steeped leftover leaves for 5 minutes in hot almond milk and water, then added a bit of sugar.
So good.
Really, really good.
I’m getting a lot more cinnamon and delicious sweet thick tea. But even though I’m getting more cinnamon, it’s pretty balanced.
Yum.
Preparation
I actually like this! I really like it! :D
It is so different from the one from Mariage Freres. That is a classic restaurant chai. In fact, it reminds me strongly of the blend used in my favourite restaurant.
This one is very thick tasting. It has very deep and rich flavours. It’s bordering on too earthy for me, but the tea plus the additions work well. This is definitely on my shopping list. I really hope this one makes it into the regular stock.
For me, at least, it’s not very spicy. I can tell there’s ginger, but instead I get a lot of bitter spiced chocolate cake flavours. I added 1/4 tsp honey to my 16 oz mug as I’m not feeling so great today, and it’s even more awesome now. (Bitter isn’t the tea. It’s the chocolate.)
I used 1 tbsp tea.
